I am coming from the Droid X where we were not able to change the Kernal. So all this Kernal stuff is kind of new to me. I finally rooted yesterday and am running viper with LK DNA .94... So what is the best app to use for tuning the Kernal? Is this necessary? Is their a thread where I can read up on this?
Thanks for your help
Either use trickster mod or system tuner.
You can lower the voltage(save battery), up the clock speed and change the governer(change performance/battery life), etc.

There are a few to choose from, but system tuner works well. Keep in mind though that it is completely optional to overclock/undervolt, and the kernels work well as is. Overclocking too high can damage the phone (I recommend not going over the stock 1.5GHz unless you know what your doing), and undervolting can make the phone crash frequently. If your read up on a few guides it can be done completely safely, but you may find you prefer to leave the kernel's default settings as they are known to be safe and stable and are already optimized over the stock kernel.

Hello everyone, I just had one quick question (I'm also very new to Android in general so I don't want to do anything to make my phone un-useable). Does Setcpu work with samsung fascinate root and clockwork mod? I heard some people say theres a seperate application to underclock and overclock the fascinate, but then again i do not think they knew what they were talking about. Is there a better program than setcpu?
Sorry if this has already been posted. I know its been posted in other forums for different phones, but didn't find one for the fascinate.

setcpu is the only and the best overclocking app. If u want to be able to overclock ur phone us have to flash jt1134s 1.2ghz voodoo kernel then use can use setcpu to overclock to 1.2ghz!

SetCPU is the most popular one. You'll need root to even use SetCPU. And you'll need CWM to flash the OC Kernels. If you dont OC SetCPU is pointless
On that note.
SetCPU must be ran on conservative and with no profiles and no load on boot.
If you do reboot your phone, mine reverts back to 800, so I need to manually change it to 1200.
Do u have to set both min & Max to 1200???
no just the max

Not pointless. You can always underclock to spare your battery life

Yes, of course you are right. Actually the other day I forgot to slide sliders up from 800 to 1200 and I was getting really good battery life for like 2 hours my % only dropped 1% and I was like wow.
Im just pleased as punch that there are OC/UV kernels out, its the best of both worlds.
Actually my battery life is above average it seems; either that or my usage is below average so Im not draining it as much. I'd gladly mildly overvolt to something like 1350mV if it meant I'd be rock solid stable at say 1.4Ghz
BTW, jt I heard you might be getting out the kernel speed chase after these 1.2Ghz's? Just don't feel like chasing 1.3 or 1.4?
I am running Dirrk's D012 LV 1200 Kernel with SetCPU
Luckily, the LV runs EXTREMELY smooth on my phone..
So smooth, that for the past day now I have been able to run with "set on boot" and constant restarts on my phone..and with Profiles for Screen Off, Temp (probably wont get there), and Charging. I can say that I have had no problems with my profiles and set on boot. Then again, I don't want to contribute to hurting anyone's phone
Just thought I'd let everyone know how my phone (and potentially others) can seem to handle profiles and set on boot.

No problems with set on boot here either. I keep it on.
so how do i use setcpu/what are the steps i need to take?

Install it, tell it to auto detect, set the max where you want, leave the min at 100, and then leave it alone.

I was hoping to get some help. I have installed jt's 1200 voodoo kernal, and I can't seem to get Setcpu to clock at 1200. It still says that the max is 800, however, on the slide it is only giving me the option to goto 528. Bellow are my facts, any help would be great!
Facts:
1. flashed jt's overclocked voodoo use clockwork, but did it through "install ROM from sd card". I am not sure if this is correct, but it seems to be running voodoo.
2. I have no idea how I need to have Setcpu set up.
I feel like I am blindfolded and I am trying to wack at a pinata.
thanks.
Edit: never mind...even a blind folded monkey hits the pinata every now and then
Hi all I did a few searches for this but I wanted to be certain about this. I'm running the stock original on my thunderbolt rooted to use all the good apps. I decided to buy SetCPU to see if I could increase performance and conserve battery power too but I'm uncertain about the best settings to use. I don't want to burn it out so I'm looking to find out what the best settings are for the HTC thunderbolt to lock it so to increase performance and save battery power when it's off etc.. If anyone can suggest the best settings to overclock to so that I can increase performance and still be very stable and conserve battery power etc.. the best settings, I'd really appreciate it thanks!
check out the dev forum and read up on imoseyon's kernels, they'll do exactly what you are looking for.
and if you go that route, you won't even need to use setcpu anymore, imo made a script for his kernel that you can run in terminal to make all the adjustments for you.

Also set CPU really is out dated. It does not perform well on the thunderbolt I would stay away from it. If you download a ROM like BAMF it actually has overclocking built in for you and the phone utilizes it when needed.
Just flashed faux's newest kernel, and it has undervolting.
I'm wondering if anyone has experience with this or has a guide for it.
I just want to maximize its potential.

there is no specific guide. Unfortunately every CPU is different so the values you can use to undervolt will be different. Check out Faux's Thread Around page 50. There should be some info there.
Read Faux's kernel thread. There are several settings that people have posted and some info on how they tested their phone.

Just have to play around with it. Usually start off with the lower frequencies and see if stable. Then continue up.
Good rule of thumbs are the higher freq, the less you should undervolt.
Another important thing is uncheck Set on Boot. Last thing you want is for it to be unstable and you're stuck in a reboot loop cause it keeps setting itself.
So I've just installed newtoroot's Nos M7 Rom and I was curious if there was a better kernal floating around out there than the stock one so I browsed the thread and apparently beaups kernal seems to be the kernal of choice with this rom. Once I installed it I then wondered what were the best cpu/kernal settings to go with (overclock, underclock, governor, scheduler, voltages, etc) and what app, if any, should I use to adjust the various settings. Still looking for an answer to that one but I figured why not start a thread where everyone can post what Rom and kernal combo they are currently running and what settings were adjusted to achieve that perfect set up. If ur setup sucks be sure to note that as well so we know to stay away from it. So I'll start....
Once again I'm running the NOS M7 Rom, beaups sense kernal, and still wondering what the best cpu/kernal settings are. Anyone have a suggestion? Gracias kneegrows!

I am using same kernel with Viper. Only mods are to undervolt to save a bit more battery and decrease screen autobacklight brightness levels in venom tweaks. Read about CPU binning then decrease voltage based on the speed of your CPU. Phone quite stable last couple months with 50-60 mV undervolting with "fast" CPU.

I've always had absolutely outstanding battery life with sense roms, granted I use custom kernels with undervolting. I've flashed basically every ROM here and I usually get maybe a full day out of sense under heavy usage and maybe half a day out of AOSP. Can somebody explain why? I'd always thought the SenseUI used more resources and had more backgrounded process running than AOSP. Benchmarking also reflects that. But I still get more usage from sense than aosp. Am I missing something? I also used custom kernels with aosp and undervolted.

I'm probably wrong but the phone was built for sense not aosp. I've wondered the same thing myself.

I don't think physical aspects are the reason for battery life here though. You'd think a ROM running fewer processes would have better life, but here it's the opposite. Unless Sense actually DOES run fewer system apps than aosp does...

I've had better luck on MeanROM, which is Sense based than AOKP, but I'm new to the latter.
Does anyone on here run AOSP-based ROM's and get a full day's worth of battery life? Any tips/tricks for those of us on here having battery life issues with AOSP?

Depends on what aosp rom you're talking about. 4.4 naturally sucks more battery than 4.3 does. I recommend using tasker to switch off data when your screen is off, and reactivate every 15 minutes or so to make sure you still get background syncing. Not my idea, someone else posted this and it works great. Also undervolt if possible (make sure to stability test) and reduce screen brightness. Screen on uses a surprising amount of battery.
I already use Llama to contol wifi/GPS/BT and cycle mobile connections with the screen off. You need a custom kernel to undervolt, right? What program do you use to control that?

I use kernel tuner. Be careful to not set anything to boot until you've thoroughly tested voltages.
Sent from my EVO
What settings on kernel tuner have you gotten away with changing without causing apps to FC or the phone to randomly reboot? I've played around with the governors a little bit, but I'm not familiar with all of the options in kernel tuner.

I anyways is interactive. Undervolt in will require extensive testing on your part since no phone is the same so my voltages may not work on your device. I don't touch anything that's in the governor mod section since I don't know what I'm doing there.
