Best way to brick Rezound? - HTC Rezound

I broke my screen completely. I want to replace the device with insurance.
I am rooted, S-Off, Nil's Business 3.6 v6.4 installed. USB debugging is enabled. The device shows up when using the command "adb devices".
What is the best way to ensure a good brick? I was thinking of flashing a boot.img file made from an MP3 or something in fastboot.
Thoughts?

why would you brick it?? why dont you just lock it and RUU?

The device keeps going offline in adb. I don't think I have time to do anything in adb at this point.
Screw it. I'm going to brick it the "old-fashioned" way. If I can't fine any bricks, maybe I'll check out how some truck tires work.

Hex edit a hboot, just mess up some bytes or delete some. Then flash it in bootloader.. That should brick it pretty hard.

If thats what you really want to do, doing qhat squirrel said would totally toast it

Quick question. I was trying to "adb pull mnt" to pull files from the phone. It only transfer a few MB's or so before going offline.
After many battery pulls, I can "adb rebooot recovery". From recovery, it won't go offline, but I can't adb pull from recovery.
Is there a way to transfer files from the phone in recovery?
Then I'm bricking it...

I think you'd have to mount the storage within recovery.. Maybe blindly select mount since your screen isn't working.
What recovery are you on? If your amon I can post instructions for you to do it blindly
EDIT. so for amon it will be this :
Once in recovery
1. Press down volume 6x
2. Press power
3. Press down 4x for ext_sd
Or 5x for sdcard
4. Press power
You could also try this.. Havnt tried myself.
It's the usb mass storage setting in amon
To get that just :
1. Press down volume 1x
2. Press power
3. Press down volume 1x for ext_sd
Or 2x for internal sd
4. Press power
I'm assuming that will make it show up as an external storage on your computer

I appreciate the help with the data.
Unfortunately, I can't seem to brick the device with my hex-edited boot.img.
C:\PROGRA~2\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools>fastboot flash boot boot.img
sending 'boot' (5441 KB)...
OKAY [ 1.156s]
writing 'boot'...
FAILED (remote: not allowed)
finished. total time: 1.482s
I get the same thing when flashing my hex-edited hboot.nb0
Maybe my device is all messed up.
I may need some other bricking method. I am getting closer and closer to rounding up some real bricks.

Hmm sounds like you want help with insurance fraud. You realize that if the phone is damaged in any way they will deny coverage and make you pay full retail for the replacement phone? A cracked screen would make you ineligible for a warranty replacement.
Good luck with that

Use the updater script from this ph98img with your messed up hboot image.. Then once again blindly flash in bootloader
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1853871
To flash blindly should be easier, just boot into bootloader.. Wait about 5-10 seconds and hit volume up to accept the update

If you are going the insurance route you dont need to brick it. if you were going to RMA it then you would need to return to stock.

[Q] [REQ] Do we need a new hboot?

Ok guys, before I go into my question let me tell you what I did. (a bit of a long story, if you don't want to read it, just head to the bottom to read my question )
I did a complete format of my phone inside twrp, wiped everything, to install a new rom. I got an error which after a bit of searching I found out that I had to install the latest twrp. So, withing the twrp menu, I selected "mount usb" and copied the latest pc86img file to the card. I dismounted and, again, inside the twrp menu selected "power off". I turned on the phone by holding down the volume button. It updated the recovery and all was good..... up to right now.
Now, I could not boot my phone into a rom because I had already formatted all of my phone, so I could not erase the pc86img file. Also, I could not boot into recovery because hboot kept finding the pc86img file and it would not give me any other options than to apply or reboot.
I ended removing the case, removing the back cover, removing the battery, removing the sdcard, plugging in my sdcard into my computer, deleting the file, putting back the sdcard, put the battery, put the back cover, and finally put the case back on.
I think this was too much work for something so simple. I remember in my Evo 4G, if there was a pc86img file sitting in the sdcard, the bootloader would detect it and if I did not want to apply it, it would just take me back to the bootloader's menu.
So, now to my question: is there anybody out there in this wonderful community of hackers talented enough to put out a new/modified hboot that will thow me back to the bootloader menu if I don't want to apply the pc86img file? Thanks.
arqbrulo said:
What he's trying to say is, make it so when you don't want to update the PCIMG, it doesn't auto reboot. Sucks to have to take the file out and then re-reboot again.

...besides, unless you are never near a computer when you are a romman and moddan why no just flash via fastboot instead?

[Q] HTC EVO 3D CDMA bricked?

Okay guys, I have an HTC Evo 3D CDMA that is somewhat unusable. All I did was root the phone and in a few days the phone just wouldn't start up. It gets stuck on the HTC logo. I've tried getting it into download mode to flash a new stock firmware (but it didn't want to), I've tried to put the .zip stock firmware file onto the sd card to "install zip from sd card", I've tried to put the update file on the sd card to install it through "hboot", and even factory resetting it, but it still would get stuck on the logo and fail to boot up. I've tried just about everything I can think of, or find on the internet. Any other suggestions or solutions?

Were you able to reflash a kernel or the stock ROM?
I couldn't flash ANYTHING. -_-

I made the mistake of flashing one of the stock roms derived from RUU which was a big mistake since it flashed the hboot I no longer have revolutionary which lead me to not being able to fastboit anything. I can get the adb to.connect to the device while in recovery with system mounted. but that's pretty much it. If i install a custom ROM when I reboot revolutionary will see device but not ling enough to.root and install the drivers. Just setup your pc to use fastboot otherwise you might do the same thing I did. After two days of searching trying different things my fix was going and buying a new phone last night.

If you relocked your phone "fastboot oem lock" and installed a stock RUU, this should have brought your phone back to stock. This wasn't the case?

When you root your phone, never accept updates unless you unroot your phone and go back to stock. Are you on hboot 1.5? I would suggest finding a rom that you want to flash (I recommend Myn's warmtwopoint3 RLS1 Deodex). To do this go into fastboot USB and load the custom recovery in the folder you downloaded to root your phone "fastboot boot recovery.img" (recovery.img should be replaced with the name of the CWM***.img file in that folder. This will give you full access to write the kernal and install the rom). Your issue is only likely kernal related so unless you do what I just mentioned, you wont have access to write a new kernal.

Does it still show hboot 1.4? According to the instructions, after the PG86IMG.zip installs, you need to go into fastboot and type "fastboot oem writesecureflag 3"
I think your probably just doing something wrong. Pull your battery out, put it back in, hold down volume button and power to boot into bootloader. Explain to me what you see. You should see fastboot on the top and you should be able to press the power button to enter fastboot and when you plug in your phone it will show fastboot usb. If this isnt happening I'm very curious as to what is.

Hi everyone. The only reason why I wrote this status was because I rooted the phone for someone, and gave it back to them in working order. Then about a week later, they came back to me with that problem and I tried to fix it. But with no success as I stated above. They threatened to sue me or take me to small claims for this problem which i didn't even start. Talk about assholes. Anyways, they gave me the option of paying them 350 which is half of what they bought the phone for, or having me try to fix it. If I do fix it, no need to pay, but if I don't then I'd have to pay the full price which is 700. So I've decided to just pay them the 350 to shut their mouth, get my ass out of trouble, and get on with my life.
So yea, I guess I won't be needing this thread anymore. I really want to try fixing it to save me money, but I don't want to risk it. And yea, I know how much of an asshole they're being. But oh well, shows what kind of people they are.
Were you paid initially for services rendered, when first "working" on the phone? Did you make mention any guarantee/warranty for "work" performed? At any time was this person/persons aware of such forum/s which clearly express "do this at your own risk"?

Anytime your altering anything on anyone's phone always run them through the normal disclaimer. Make certain that they understand that you take ABSOLUTELY NO RESPONSIBILITY for any damage that might be caused by what THEY want you to do. **** happens sometimes and and you gotta cover your ass. This is why every Rom, Radio/firmware updates, themes and guides have the same disclaimer.

Just read the OP again. You only rooted the phone, didn't install a custom ROM? Also, after rooting it, the person whom you rooted the phone came to you after a week, not a day or two? In that time frame who knows what they tried to do. Also, someone mentioned a kernel issue as the most likely culprit. Are you able to get into recovery, volume down + power/recovery? Can you get to the bootloader/HBOOT screen? If you get anything other than just the bootloader screen, you may still salvage it. Any progress?

Did you check the SD card for anything that you didn't put on there? Sounds like you were scammed to me. Give me half now or try to fix it and if you can't you have to pay me full. Something doesn't sound right with that. Sounds like they didn't want to give you enough time to dig to deep into the phone. Did you check to see if it was even the same phone? Did you charge them for this service originally? What was the reason why they wanted root access?

I don't remember what I did and didn't put on there. So I can't use that as a way to back myself up. And I honestly started thinking that it is a scam, but again, it is kind of is my fault for not taking extra precautionary measures to protect myself in the event that this thing happens. Yes, I did charge for the service. And they didn't say why they wanted it rooted. And even if they are scamming me, I'm just glad it happened sooner so that I could learn from it and prepare myself for the future. As for the money, I am bummed that I have to pay them, but God knows who's the better person and what kind of people they are so I'll let God deal with them.
I have the same issue, sort of. A friend brought me his Evo 3D for me to work on.
My friend 'rooted' his Evo3D through some steps up on youtube that claims root for the 1.5 hboot with S-ON. He then later DL Rom Manager and flashed the freEVO ROM. Now its only useful for WIFI, connected media/google talk/phone dialer/contacts do not work, they all say 'Could not launch the requested activity.'. I have tried factory resetting but it resets to the same issue, cant flash any other rom since there is no actual recovery.
Any ideas on how I can make this thing work

your recovery is trying to load things that are not there...you should have a prior and recent backup of your system...if so.. hook the phone up to your computer and copy the back up to your computer and open up that zip file....in it youll see a file named cache.img extract that image and then copy it over to where your fastboot file is.... unplug the phone...reboot into your hboot, select fast boot then plug it back in... you should see it say fastboot usb,,, now on your computer type this in
fastboot flash cache cache.img
it should send then write since youre s-off and then reboot into your recovery and see if you get the message still, try also reflashing the recovery... post back and let me know please...im curious myself.

Everyone is giving such a difficult answer. All you have to do is wipe cache in recovery.

youre right...the prob was fixed...thing was is that the recovery he was using wasnt allowing him to scroll through the options even after re-flashing the IMG. the phone owner wasnt the one who did the original flashing and wasnt sure on how to use fastboot to fix this issue... the recovery i posted in the most recent post allows you to scroll through the options and clear the cache and then reboot into recovery again and the problem should vanish...
I'm kinda thankful for hboot 1.5, it forced me to learn about using adb/SDK tools, I've downgraded since but I'm thankful I had to go through the bullsh**, ive learned a lot

CWM Help

Ok, so apprently I am running cwm, I thought I was running amon ra to be honest but here is my problem:
Ok, I had cleanrom on my phone, lost 4g so started messing around. When I go into CWM Recover v5.8.1.4 and try to reinstall a rom or anything I just get the little CWM icon, It will not go into any option I choose. I have to pull the battery to restart. But the screen will not turn on when I push the power. Only think I can do is boot into bootloader. VZW rep said they can replace it, but was afraid I would get charged from HTC since its prob my fault. Any suggestions?
Hmm. Boot into bootloader, plug in via usb. Flash Ruu or new recovery (probably RUU)
I think that should work.

Thanks reaper, now I cannot even get into bootloader.........some people arent suppose to mess with this stuff...and Im one of them Back to the pre for a few days.
Your battery is probably too low to boot you need to charge it or look for the cwm boot problem thread to get it to boot

alright I have discovered what I've done wrong....the phone still isnt working but heres how it happened.
I did flash amon ra, and clean rom. Once I got it all setup, I downloaded ROM Manager, this has killed the phone. Like I said everything I try to flash a new rom from zip on sd, the little rom manager dude blocks me. Any suggestions on how to get rid of him so I can reflash. When I plug the phone into my computer to adb device it is not found. I have download HTC Sync.
you need to be in fastboot for it to be found
Ah the old charging problems. That's right. This guide should work. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1722989&highlight=clockwork+boot
Your phone isn't bricked, relax. For some reason none of us quite know, when any rezound with clockworkmod on it reaches fully low low battery and turns off it no longer charges correctly.

May have a new one/can't believe I did this.

Well I may have truly found out how to brick this phone. First what you want to do is unlock the bootloader, then flash a recovery. Next you want to gain SU on the phone and root. If your their and you want to brick your phone you will need to do the following steps.
1. Forget to create a restore
2. Flash the google nexus 4.3 to the phone
3. realize it in a boot loop
4. format data on the phone (yeah that's right...I wiped everything)
5. sit back and admire your work.
Any ideas?

what he said
Can you get into recovery?
There is a way to adb a rom file onto the phone using twrp as long as you can get into recovery and the pc recognizes the phone....if no recovery though I don't know.. would have to be able to get into fastboot and flash twrp.

Thanks for the reply.
I have tried to side losd a rom but either I'm doing it wrong or it just won't work. I keep getting errors. I can reboot the phone from ADB on the computer but I can't seem to move any information across...Heck I can even lock and unlock the bootloader but not side load.
Did you try this? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=42426459

Oh, i feel your pain, Just "soft" bricked my phone. Lucky it has plenty of juice and i was still able to get to booloader. Somewhat of an easy fix. But boy did my heart start pumping.
When you reboot, what does it do? Just sit there on the HTC screen, not light up at all, or something else?
I only ask because I thought I borked mine today going from the OTA, to .12, to S-OFF, the accidentally making it ENG S-OFF, and then the screen not lighting up when I'd try to do anything.
But I was able to get the silver HTC screen to pop up and flash the 4.1.2 RUU to go to WWE 4.2.2.
