[Q] Root with a broken back button - XPERIA X10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey, so last night i biked home when it was raining really hard. I came home and went straight to bed. My phone was still in my pants wich were also a little wet. Now my problem is that my 3 buttons(options, home and back) dont work. Now i found a app(buttion savior). With that u can just press back on your screen but my phone needs to be rooted for it. Can i still root my phone without useing the back button? If i power up my phone they still work for about 2-5 minutes and after that they stop working everytime.
If i wanna try and do it like they explain in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1319653
It says:
just download the attached file, extract it using winzip/winrar
go to the folder where its extracted and execute "RUNME.bat"
read and follow the instructions on the screen!
I dont wanna start this until i know that the instructions doesnt include the use of the back button. Also i never done these kinds of things before and i know they can break your phone, i just dont wanna do this and found out in the middle of the process that i cant finish it and my phone stops working.
So someone has any experience with my problem or know a solution on how to root without useing the back button? Since they work when i boot my phone i wonder if the back button also works when my phone is turned off.
Greetings
Edit: Since my phone was wet, i dont think the buttons not working is a software fault. Also alot of info i found about this problem are older then a year. Thats why im going to ask it again since maybe in the meanwhile there is a better solution.

Yes this method doesn't use the back button.. Make sure u r on 2.3.3 just follow the instructions

Flashtool can also root without the back button, and can install a recovery.
The only thing you cant do is flash the phone/install a kernal as that needs the back button (but even then your phone needs to be off for that and only needs like 30 secs to be pressed).
Bit strange how it stops working though, however I havent heard of it. The only solution I can think of is to replace the keypad flex cable (which consists of your camera button and your 3 front buttons). However, if youre from the UK and are up for a challenge of "fix it yourself", you could always buy a new keypad flex and fix it yourself. When I broke the same flex cable I used this item: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/270706458527?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649 and works fine.

Lol i prefer not messing with my phone. Yet i dont know how it come the buttons aint working. If i boot up my phone they work for like 5 min so i dont think they are broken tbh. Well guess its time to root and use the button savior i guess

Lol, so a few days ago i went into the shower with my phone (for music). Ik took my phone with wet hands, not the kind of wet hands that wil drown my phone but they were still were wet. The space above my buttons got wet with some with some water and all of a sudden i tried to press the home button, close applications and put my phone to standby to clean it with a towel. Then i noticed that the buttons worked again (100% sure that 2 hour before my shower they didnt worked)
Might be a strange solution but it was 4 days ago and the buttons works again. I dont try to say to put water on your phone but it might work. Maybe its the pressure of the water on the touchscreen that made it work( almost 100% sure, why would water make a diffrence besides the pressure effect on the screen). I noticed alot of SE Xperia x10 with this problem so not sure if they had any water related problems but even tho its dangerous it still might work :S

hm nice
my mom once washed my old, half broken headphones and both ear parts worked again. I am used to say they do not sound that dry anymore

but i believe that there could have been some dirt between the button and the contact (always some mid between the buttons, was maybe "flooded" down) and is now gone.

Xperia Mini Pro Capacitive Button Problem

Hi I was wondering if anyone has the same problem as i am having right know.
I have a Sony Ericsson Xperia Mini pro White SK17I. It was working well untill when i tried to press the back button. I had to wait for so long to get a response from the back button. I tried the same thing with the menu button (Not the physical hone key) it still had the delay. The delay is about 5-10 seconds. Sometimes, you have to wait extremely long or you have to press it again. sometimes it runs normally. But rarely it does work as normally should. I only had the phone for 2 weeks. I was wondering if i can exchange it since i have a 12 Month warranty. thats all the problem I'm having right now
thank you
Me too but not always i discovered that it depends on memory usage.

me too..need to press harder..but not usually like that..most of the time, it works normally.
same here..just to make a point, did you have the noise problem as well?
I have the same problem. I think has to do something with the temperature/humity. If its warm outside and i have sweat on my fingers its happens, when its cold and dry everything works fine. I tested with /dev/event/input and with wet fingers it does not even trigger any events.

I got same problem with my Xperia Mini Pro back key. Every time it happened, I'll just reboot the phone and that problem is gone.

I got this problem right after installing NFS Shift. Now the back key often doesn't work and the Options key is unresponsive.
It is a known issue related with temperature, affecting more and more people every day (including me). SE is not responding, but seems a design problem:

You'll be surprised, but I do not have such problems

I rebooted, but the problem is still there.
my back key is okay, only menu key is unresponsive at all. i think this is because of hardware problem.
i bought it 1 day ago, though. gonna bring my phone to SE service center tomorrow.
Guys I fixed my problem. This guy on facebook had the same problem as I did. He fixed his and so did I. The reason it lags isnt because of the memory usage. Its some other reasons that I dont remember. Anyway, if you guys still need to fix yours, heres how. First you got to have cottons and a screen protector. The Sony one that you get from the box works. You have to apple one TINY drop of soap onto the cotton then wipe it over your display. Make sure you clean the buttons cause thats the priority. Make sure you cover the top bits. After you done that. Get your clean cotton and wipe it to get the soap out. DONT USE WATER. After thats done, make sure there is no string of cotton left in your screen. After you checked, apply the screen protector then its done. I just did mine today and its going well so far. Trust me guys this isnt a trap to break your phone or anything. I trusted this guy that told me the steps and it worked. What I am trying to say is just give it a go. If you did it like I did, I think you should be fine. I love my xperia again hope it works for you guys

I have no back button issues so far. I once had it slowing down but that was related to an application hanging so low memory might be related.
No problems here so far, but it seems like german phones don't have problems at all. Ive been checking amazon ratings all day long but no1 ever mentions problems with the button
Well some people have the problem. I just wanna help them.

Yea thats nice My guess is, some countries get worse quality phones :/
As far i have the phone the back and menu keys work very fine for me, in fact they are very sensitive... and works fast
I had no problems until the update to Android 2.3.4.
Now I can't even play a game for 10 minutes and it presses the back button a lot.
It looks like it can be related to the firmware.
-----------------
I've seen on another site that other people also are facing more heating after update to 2.3.4. Well, since overheating is related to the issue, it may be possible that it is causing the back button issue for me.
Its Due to Memory Blocks aswell
The Problem is mainly due to too much of moisture in your hands...
to get rid of the problem, wipe off your hand of all moisture, and clean your cellphone screen and the buttons with a soft cloth.
And also remember to clean the used memory. usually its both the problems occurring at the same time, due tio which it seems no to be working..
hope it helps
I've had this problem too and I found out that the cause is the sweat from my hands.

I beg to differ, but my German Mini Pro does have the back-button-issue!
Don't know if it's due to sweaty fingers, I'll try one of these capacitive pens some day.
But I can say, as soon as I plug in the power cord, the button is working again.

[Q] Brick or hardware failure?

Hi guys,
I bought a second hand mini pro, and flashed (rooted, unlocked bootloader)it with the help of one of the several guides. with Simplexity and MiniCM7
It seemed to work fine at first, but now something odd happens.
I can only turn the device on (working) when I keep the keyboard slided out. When I start up with it slided in, The screen is turned on but no image appears: It stays black.
When it is turned on (slided out) I can use the phone normally. But when I slide it back in, the screen is frozen and won't react to touches.
Putting the phone in and out of standby (slided out) will have two possible outcomes: Either its usable as normal. Or it simply won't come out of standby at all. The phone seems to react (sounds) to pressing the buttons on the keyboard though.
I used Seus and manual methods to reflash to stock, try other kernels, but the problems remain.
I think it's the hardware that's failing but maybe this can be caused by the flashing as well?
Are there any methods to rule out one or the other?

I'm responding to the thread's title : It's a hardware failure.Brick means you can't even power it on/flash mode.If I helped click the "Thanks" button. Also, try using nAa-11 my and x10man's ROM called XMP Rom and tell us if you still have this problem.I understand that you posted this here (If you post it in questions section almost no one will respond )so I won't tell about that.
(Oh, my bad. Mods feel free to move my thread)
I was afraid of that. I'll try your ROM as well, but I'm afraid its the hardware too.
Thankfully I only paid 30 euros for it
I think the flex cable is gone bad, i have the same problem here. My mobile doesnt respond to any touches. First it happened only when i would slide the keyboard. But now its dead as a whole

The XMP rom didn't fix it, so I guess you're right. Would a flex cable (those are the flat orange ones right?) be expensive?

This is the cable we are having a problem with, i have given my mobile for replacing this stuff as i couldnt get this locally. This board houses the LCD and the digitizer and the buttons connect to this. The black cable goes to the motherboard. Its pretty simple to take apart the phone, but take care while doing so. Another thing its that, when you are opening the display panel, its better to use a guitar pick instead of a screwdriver and open it at the latches, that would avoid damage to the outer plastics.

broken power button?

So I've been playing with my phone for the last couple of days and recently I've been getting random reboots. I thought it was the ROM so I rolled back to a ROM I wasn't getting the issue and experienced the same. I did switch from CWM to TWRP and started getting the problem right around the same time. What happens is the phone goes dark like it's going to reboot, it does it's vibrate to say it's awake and repeats the vibrate roughly once a second until I push the power button a few times or until I pull the battery. I've been able to replicate this by holding the power button down.
Has anyone experienced this issue?

it still functions but it feels touchy. it's very easy to activate it. I'm wondering if the hardware switch is loose and out of place. I'm still debating on tearing it down or calling Samsung and getting it replaced, but I'm not sure if I really want a referb or some tech playing with my phone.
A referb word be preferable to a broken power button.

haha I doubt it, I'll call them tomorrow to find out and if it's going to be too long I'll just tear it down and take a look at it. I have been meaning to look at the possibilities of adding an inductive charger to the phone, maybe this is the opportunity.
I'm having exact same problem. power buttong gets stuck if I press it. phone reboots and just vibrates after reboot without going to recovery or samsung logo. I have stopped using power button and enabled wakeup screen on volume button (SlimROM). Also added "Power" to power widgets in notification drawer settings. I try to avoid pressing power as much as possible.
i'm thinking of calling Samsung support or open phone myself to check it out. let me know if you got it fixed by Samsung. how long did it take to get the phone back? did you restore phone to stock rom before sending it? was it covered under warrenty?

I have an issue similar to this, im thinking my issue is loose connections. what mine does is turn on for a bit and then restart. I've been able to resolve mine by flashing this rom.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2261598
via odin.
I would try taking your phone apart and cleaning the power button with a q-tip and a LITTLE alcohol. if that fails i'd try to flash the rom. Good Luck

did flashing the rom every fix it op? or did you just go ahead and replace the power button? if the rom did fix it, can someone repost the link? the link is broken.
Again i would try cleaning the power button off first.
to do so:
there should be 9 small phillips screws around the battery -remove those
then the metallic looking rim around the phone has clips that clip the back portion to the rest of the phone. use a finger nail and seperate the grey from the white around the phone, unlatching the clips. remove the back cover and locate the power button(on the left when looking at it from the back. dap the q-tip in a tiny bit of alcohol barely moistening the cotton. apply the q-tip to the button getting a small amount on it and press the button until it clicks smoothly. on the cover you took off you can remove the button it has a little rubber angle on each end holding it in. clean around that also. reassemble and test.

Personally I wouldn't ever Odin with this issue, a reboot while flashing a new bootloader potentially boom. My issue was persistent through all roms and even in recovery which lead me to believe it was hardware. What I did to solve the issue was I pulled the case off, battery out and just played with the button for an hour or so. Felt how it clicked and if it was clicking funny. After that it worked fine. By playing with it I don't mean mashing on it, I mean gently and normal clicking, feeling where it caught and didn't. What it felt like to me was some lint under the button which eventually worked it's way out. Hope this helps

I had this issue of my power button sticking today. I took the phone apart and used some rubbing alcohol on a q-tip to get some on the button and pressed it repeatedly. I did that a few times and used some canned air to dry it out a few times. Put it all back together and button is working like new again.

If its not staying on at all then i agree with you. But if the problem is off and on and you've already tried cleaning the button thats really one of your last resorts. if the phone reboots during a flash you will get a firmware download error and you will have to reflash. may take a few tries but if the phone eventually stays on it'll be fine.

As I agree with you. Glad we're on the same page with a power issue like that, I'd check via the recovery image to see if it happened there and continue troubleshooting.

So I've confirmed it is the power switch. Any way to replace it?
dweezy you must have super tough fingernails. I recommend two guitar picks, working them as a pair -- one pixk to separate the bezel from the body, the other to hold the place as you move around the bezel.

Phone is stuck in a boot loop and this is what I know so far. Phone is on stock ROM, power button is working fine, I can get to recovery and OS and download mode, and while phone was charging I took the battery out and the phone keeps vibrating. I now know it's a hardware problem for me (I think), but I can not pin point where. Any advise would be helpful cause I really love my note and this is just breaking my heart. :crying:

When you get into recovery does the phone stay on? If so how long 10 mins? Hours? If it stays on I would assume its software.
Phone stays on forever in those modes, I'm gonna flash a different ROM to see what happens .... so I'm back to say it's a hardware problem. Same exact thing happens with liquid JB, paranadroid, and CM 10...did a clean wipe before installing each one too. Friend pointed me to some sites talking about a battery failure causing phones to do that so I'm gonna order a new one and see what happens...if this fails I have to get a new phone...and continue to work on my baby.

Power Button not working?

My Samsung Galaxy S2 (AT&T) is rooted, and I am running a custom ROM. It worked great for about 7 months, but yesterday my phone would randomly reboot when I would press my power button. I thought it was either the custom ROM or my power button was stuck so I installed a new custom ROM to see if that was the problem was software related. After I installed the new ROM the power button worked great, but this morning my phone would only unlock when I plugged it into the AC or when someone called me (The power button is not unlocking/locking the phone). I've tried to boot into Recovery, but I need the power button to reinstall a ROM and it's not working there either. I've done some research and one guy said it may have overheated and to let it sit without the battery for a few hours so this is what I'm doing now. However, I think I've come up with the conclusion that my power button is broken, and if this is the case I could use some help on how to fix it because I'm not skilled with phone hardware. Any help is appreciated, and if I find anything else that helps then I'll be sure to post back that my problem is fixed and what I did to fix it.
The ROM I'm running now is SlimBean for S2 (AT&T)
Has no one else had this problem? Does anyone have any fixes or suggestions?
Lots I'm sure. I remember seeing at least two other threads like this recently. U can get into download mode and flash without a power button if I'm not mistaken. Also u could use mobile odin pro to flash back to stock. I mean if your point is to try and find out if it's a hardware problem or q software problem. If you already know it's the hardware I would try and fix it yourself or get a warranty replacement.

Thanks for the reply. You can flash without a power button in CWM Touch, but Slimbean only has CWM. I can't flash Touch without a power button. Kind of a crappy situation. lol
UPDATE:
I just tried using the Odin method in this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1313659), and now I'm stuck in a bootloop on the AT&T logo. You could have downloaded an app from the market called quick boot and booted into recovery mode. My daughters phone is doing the exact same thing. Haven't got a chance to look at it. I have found out that the power button is different from the international version. Would have been an easy fix if they were the same. Her's is less than a year old so I may send it in to Samsung for repair. The button looks like its modular and soldered to the board instead of being soldered to the board via a flat flex cable. I'm going to updated my post on the subject once I get some facts.

I was experiencing the exact same problem! At firstly my power button was so sensitive that it turned out to be a 'touch button' instead of pressed button. It always auto directed to power button menu. Until yesterday it decided to die on me. Thank God I installed AOKP rom which has the option to wake the screen with volume wake option.
However to answer your question (i ran into the same problem that I stuck in AT&T ICS boot logo), it's stuck because the data/cache needed to be wiped before it could freshly boot up. This is what I did:
1) Get into the download mode (with battery out/in, hold 2 volume buttons and plug into the usb)
2) Get Odin (I figured out you already have it)
3) Download a siyah kernel which version must be above 3 in order to have the touch kernel (nonswap or micswap in whatever you can find from the internet). Make sure you download the kernel in a TAR format. Otherwise ODIN wont work with it.
4) Flash the siyah kernel through Odin under PDA option
5) Now, unplug your usb and insert your battery. Hold on to both volume buttons again and all hail to auto bootup function in our phone. You will manage to get into siyah recovery
6) Reflash/restore any rom you want that has SIYAH's support
Hope this helps. Right now, Im searching for one working screen lock widget without having the screen on/off within seconds. It's annoying!
its a hardware problem.you can get it fixed from a local repair shop spending $10.

6) Reflash/restore any rom you want that has SIYAH's support
Hope this helps. Right now, Im searching for one working screen lock widget without having the screen on/off within seconds. It's annoying!

Thanks a lot man. I was trying to find a kernal that was in TAR format, but I couldn't find one till you suggested Siyah. I just flashed the rom I used to use which was AOKP (Older version of ISC) and will upgrade to the newer JB rom tomorrow. thanks a lot.
Glad that it worked for you mate

Just a quick update. I'll be talking it to a shop Monday to see if someone else can find the problem internally. In the meantime I've installed Quick Boot to restart/recovery/etc, ExTweaks to enable slide to wake (Volume wake didn't work all the time. This is much better.), and a Screen Lock Widget. I can finally use my phone again, but I still want this button fixed. lol

That's awesome! Sadly mine is still broken. lol
Right now I have the AOKP (JB 10/17) ROM, and the widget is called "Lock Screen Widget." The Widget only locks the screen; it's working great for me!
I spoke to Josh from mobile tech videos since my wife's i777 power button just took a Shiite. He said he can do it for $35. I fully trust his work as he fixed my old cappy long ago and I have spoken to him on a few occasions on the phone just to be android stuff.
I have been at work all week so I haven't even been able to see if my wife's phone is a software issue or hardware. But it can only be turned on (the screen) by plugging it into a charger. So I am following this thread so tomorrow or soon I hope to check out her phone or send it to Josh.

$35 is well worth this annoyance. I'm going to see what my local shop will charge; if he charges around the same price and I don't have to ship it then I will gladly take it there. That sounds like the same problem I was having so it's probably hardware, but you can flash another ROM to see if that fixes it. Please post back with any further information; this problem seems to be all over with no one giving much advice/tips. Good luck!

Yup. Unsure what causes it and how I got it back alive. Was thinking perhaps the board problem? Have you guys had some severe fall or water damage done to your phone before? Just asking
Sent from SGS2 i777.. be prepared for typo.
Mine was like that too, when i pressed it, it would bring the power menu or restart the phone as if i left it pressed some seconds, but now it works fine. Im using latest AOKP by task. Really weird.
Any way, while i was with the problem, i was using the slidetowake feature from Siyah, volume wake and an that maps long press search button to unlock, and i don't even use the power button anymore. Its more confortable to me to slide a finger across the screen, and to long press the search button to lock it.

That's interesting. I have not dropped my phone, and it has never gotten anything more than a little rain on the screen. I took it to a cell phone shop and he said that the water damage indicator inside the phone had turned pink which means that it thinks there was water damage, but there was no corrosion on the board or any other indicators of water damage. I don't know what could have turned that pink though...

That's how my problem started so I would be careful with using the button to much. It's good that you like the slide2wake more. lol I believe it's a soldering problem so the shop I took it to is looking into that.

Sometimes its the moist around you would turned the indicator to pink. I have read it somewhere. Now it works flawlessly. So you left your phone with them?

That's what I thought it might be. Maybe shower steam? I did leave it with them, and he said all he did was mess with the button and it started working again. I don't know what it is... maybe dust in the button?

Phone reboot before finishing flash and/or download

Hi,
My note has started to act weirdly not too long ago. i had a custom firmware installed on it and it was working fine. i decided to change the firmware to put it back on stock Rogers and again it worked fine. maybe 1 week or 2 after the phone started to go into boot loop, even keeping the display off and just vibrating. i've been able to get into the recovery and download mode. i tried several way to fix the boot loop but in vain. i left the phone on my desk for a couple of weeks since i didnt had much time to work on it. now i'm trying to start working on it but i ended up with more errors!
now:
- my phone does get in download mode but reboot by itself even before i have time to flash anything with odin.
- i've only been able to get in recovery mode once, tryied to wipe to factory, but then rebooted by itself again.
whatever i do now i can't stay in any modes more than 5 sec until the phone restarts by itself...
Any tips and trick to have my phone working again?
Thanks in advance!
It sounds like the infamous stuck power button has plagued your device.
Try flicking the back of your phone by the power button with your finger. That's been a common fix. Another one is flicking the power button itself. If those methods fail you can try taking it apart and cleaning it. It is a very small tiny microswitch. Spraying cleaners or anything from the outside won't work. It's not hard to take apart, but I hope flicking it helps.

I must type just a bit slower than you. beat me to it
Hey guys thanks for the quick answer. i really happy to know that it's a kind of common problem. the things is, could you explain me what you mean by flicking my phone? english is not my first language so i don't fully understand what i need to do :s like i should swiftly hit my finger with my phone by the power button to "unstuck" the button?
hummm don't mind that, i just took it appart, pretty easy job. so now, i spray contact cleaner on the switch itself?
Thanks
