Would it/is it possible to Live boot a linux distro from a USB OTG connection?
e.g. somehow set up the phone to boot from USB OTG, plug in a usb stick with a linux arm distro and away we go?
Alternatively, can it be done with a SD-card?
Hmm interested if this would work. I'm kind of doubting it but still

Apparently not, just like computer if one's motherboard doesn't support boot from USB, then how do you manage to do it?
In this case it's same, phone's motherboard is NOT designed to boot from USB

Not with stock bootloader, you would need a custom one. And bootloaders are very tricky to modify

What about dual booting android + linux?
Surely you could install it to the internal memory?
I would love to see this myself... but you would probably be best served by either doing ubuntu for device or just getting a rasberry pi and a small hdmi monitor.
Fake iPhone aka iPhone clone van do
These iPhone clone can boot from SD card instead of having nand or mmc. I saw a couple of videos on YouTube. All these clone have cheap mediatek chip

if its a flash drive, you don't need external power

Are you rooted? If so, what Rom and what kernel?
I had the same issue with the bonsai .1.5 with their 2.0 kernel. Once I flashed over Pershoot's latest, I was good again and usb key could be read/seen.

Powered hub is only needed for high-current bus-powered devices, right now the known list is:
1) 2.5" portable hard drives (of the spinning type)
2) PS3 controllers that are not fully charged
Things that do not need a powered hub:
1) Flash drives and flash card readers (Must be FAT32)
2) Fully charged PS3 controllers
3) 3.5" externally-powered hard drives (however most of these are NTFS, which presents its own challenge).
Apparently the kernel in Bonsai ROMs is severely broken with regards to USB host support.
Powered usb hub
HI has anyone got a UK link for a Powered usb hub as trying to connect a 2.5 device to my tab 10.1
Thanks

is there any1 successfully connected hdd to S2 via OTG ?
i tried 2 hdd (seagate 500gb usb2 and samsung 500GB usb3) both never work
even before and after root to 2.3.5 xxki4
mind to share which brand of hdd you tired and works ?
or share me tricks to make it happen thnx!
I think you won't be able to spin a hdd with the power of your phone. You'll need an extra Psu for the hdd. Model that come with those things. Most 2.5" doesn't, but i might be wrong.

is there a external dvd player disc drive for androids?
Not that i have seen, the biggest issue would be to get enough power to it.
If it was a drive that also plugged into a wall socket i guess it could work but a app would need to be written to play the dvd.
And as it would not get enough power just from the devices usb it wouldnt be very portable and so quite pointless

Android doesn't recognize CD or DVD drives. I have a USB to SATA/IDE converter that is externally powered. On CM9 on my Touchpad I can hook it up via OTG and computer HDDs will work just fine both in SATA and IDE. But CD and DVD drives don't show up at all in Android.
but would it be possible to create a app and driver for android? i have heard of some tablets aparently having cd drives dont no how true it is.

It depends what the external sd is and how big it is in memory size, some work and some don't.
I have a 1 tb external and it doesn't register on my phone not even if I repartition it.

i suppose i could go through the process of using OTG Cable with my Nexus 7 and then onto my phone but it's too much hard work to be honest, all i wanna do is to get music onto my phone from the external HD, this isn't good, ill have to reconsider my options unless anyone knows a better way?

Ah figured out how to use my hdd by installing an app called paragon ntfs then plugging my wired hub into my otg cable then plugging my wired extended hdd into that.
It's a very annoying process just to plug a hard drive in but it worked

Okay what I did was have my hub connected to the mains which is also connected to my otg cable of my note 10.1
Installed the paragon app that reads ntfc data on a hard drive (some are fat32 so don't need this app)
Then connected my external 1tb hard drive which is connected to the mains to the hub and all my files showed up on my note 10.1
Hope that's easier to understand
Oops sorry exactly the same process with a galaxy s3, get confused between forums
