Major Battery Drain Issue | STOCK - Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note II

Within the last week I have been experiencing major battery drain from 'sdcard' for no reason. Here is a screenshot of my phone last night which shows 'sdcard' as the largest battery drain '29%' over a total off charger time of nearly 14 hours. The 'sdcard' details claim that the uptime for the 'sdcard' is only a mere 45 minutes. This means that in 45 minutes the 'sdcard' was able to drain 25% of a full 3100mAh battery! I barely used my phone all day and yet the 'sdcard' issue occurs on its own. I decided to try to not touch my phone today / use any apps and the same exact issue happened. The 'sdcard' accounts for around 30% of battery drain and the total up time is exactly the same 45 minutes again. Here is tonight's screenshot.
I am running Verizon Galaxy Note 2 with 4.1.1 stock (turned down the recent OTA) with only root access, no unlocked bootloader or custom ROM installed.
How many other Galaxy users out there are experiencing this issue? Any current workarounds besides the factory reset, card wipe & reformatting?
I have been having great battery life since I got the phone in early December and now have my battery draining about 30% faster than normal. What happened?

I think its something you installed disguised as "sd card." Sd card doesnt even show up when I look at my battery.

Absolutely nothing new installed. And what is installed is all legitimate applications.

Have you installed BetterBatteryStats?
That will give you a more complete picture of what is keeping the phone awake, etc.
Do you have any sync services turned on?
What about downloads that are trying to complete?
Have you checked to see if you are burning data?

Yeah I have never even seen sd card in my battery list.
Install better battery stats and track it down.
Will be interesting to see what that turns out to be.

I have a feeling your sd card is probably having issues. That's the only way I can see that coming up in your battery stats if you haven't installed anything. Take your sd card out for a day and see how it performs without it.

Interested to hear a few more details. I have loved every second with this phone until about the last 3 or 4 days. I have experienced multiple reboots along with pulling my phone out of my pocket only to find it off, with only a battery pull being able to get it to reboot. The phone also seems sluggiah at times. Which is not normal for this phone. Praying its not SDS.

I am going to test out the app in a day and I will post back the results.
Just Gmail which has never been an issue.
Cleared all downloads, so there is absolutely nothing.
No data burn at all, but I am on wifi 85% of the day.

The SD card is one of those 64GB class 10 nice ones that I would not expect to fail. I will try reformatting / wiping it after I try the battery app.

I loved the phone too, but I am also experiencing a bit of sluggishness from time to time. I also found a bizarre bug where I cannot manually turn off driving mode so I am forced to run S-Voice 24/7 in order to tell it to turn off driving mode. If i do not use S-Voice to turn it off I have difficulty using speakerphone while making calls or hearing people when they call me. Also the alarm clock shutting itself off after a few rings is a major annoyance. I cannot rely on the phone to wake me up as it just decides to shut the alarm off after 30 seconds or so. I am still trying to love it but keep running into issues. I am contemplating selling it and getting the next galaxy for the better screen.
Thanks for all the input I will try to reply back to here with some updates!

I bet your sdcard is crap. Back it up, reformat, see if problem goes away.

This...that would be my first step. I've had strange behavior with a bad sd card before....though, never had battery drain from it.

If it's a class 1-2 and the gallery keeps running media scan, that could be a cause. Actually, I bet that's where all the drain is - media scan, but that could affect any class of card.

That actually makes sense. I think step one is backup, reformat, and restore. If that doesn't help, try a different card or without a card at all. If it still is doing it after all this, then it's a software issue.

Wow get this,
I removed my SDCard and rebooted and guess what shows up under battery drain still.
SDCARD!
This is reallllllllly bizzare. It makes me think 100% that it is a software bug.
The battery drain it is pulling is over 40% at the moment!

Any clue what this means? The app is not very user friendly.

Heh, actually, now that I think about it, stock rom would consider the internal storage the sdcard. I'd try a factory reset an hope whatever is wrong there is fixed.

Should I do the factory reset through the menu or through android recovery? Never tried doing the one through the settings menu.
Will this bring back the the NFL and other bloatware apps that I used root to remove? I want it like fresh out of the box new if possible.
Also does it matter that I am rooted? Root only no unlocked bootloader.
I sound like a noob but I have never done this with stock I used to run custom ROM's 24/7 for 3 years(droid incredible) and just want to make sure things still operate the way I think they do! :good:
Thanks!
*now it is saying I have voicemails when I have no new voicemails! The device is getting rediculously buggy it seems like*

I would do the factory reset from recovery just to be safe. And that bloat you removed should stay gone. It can't magically put stuff back into /system. All a factory reset does is wipe the /data partition, wipe your /cache partition, and erase the /sdcard/android_secure. Backup your sdcard and format that at the same time. I would verify you have your device backed up to google too so when you boot up and sign back into your google account it should download some settings and apps back automatically.
Edit: I do not have this device, so you may want to have someone else verify this. But I see no reason any of my advice could harm your device.

Thanks for the input. I found the get back to out of box stock guide in another post so I am going to go that route I guess. I am concerned there is something wrong with the internals of my device and want to verify it before I go trying to get a return.
I have a huge list of bugs I have encountered while on the stock software and I want to see if they pop up again after hard hard flash reset.

What does the partial wakelocks show?

phone not turning on

I charged my phone over night and used it this morning, I got into work an left it in the office came back a couple of hours later and saw I had a message (led light flashing) tried to unlock it and it wouldnt wake. So i decided to take the battery out and reboot it and after I did that it wouldnt turn on at all. I've left it all day and came home and tried to put it on charge because i thought maybe somehow the battery was drained. Im not sure if its charging because the rom I use (liquid smooth) doesn't use the led light when charging. I don't know if it could be the power button. Is there anything i can do before sending it off to be fixed? I have tried connecting it to the computer aswell but without it being on the computer doesnt recognise anything it connected.

The sudden death issue is covered by warranty.
The internal SD dies and they have no way to know you flashed / rooted it unless they really wanted too.
You should be okay, just a little unlucky
Make sure to update your device to the latest firmwares that include the SDS patch to avoid further problems.

Well if you can`t even go into download mode then it`s unlikely they will even know that you rooted your phone. Just play dumb and do not mention that you rooted your phone. Just say that it died without a reason. Issues like yours do happen even on old Stock Samsung Firmware without Root because of the SD issue.
As Long As They Can Not Access Download Mode They Will Never Know. On My Phone (Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G) When I Go Into Download Mode It Say How Many Times I've Flashed Kernels, Roms Etc So Just Make Sure It's Completely Dead No Recovery No Download Then Call Samsung, Otherwise They'll Find Out You Voided Your Warranty And Then You'll Have To Pay Out Of Pocket, Just Play Dumb When Talking To Customer Support Just Say You Researched This Issue Online And That You Believe You Received One Of The Sudden Death GS3, and They Should Be Able To Help You Just Never Mention Rooting/Custom Rom You Should Be Fine.

Finally someone commented about that, it's kinda annoying and makes your comment extremely hard to read, I personally didn't bother to even read it.
yes you're right things do break and go wrong, just seems weird that I wasn't using it at the time and maybe a text message just set it off. Is there anyway i could possibly salvage anything on my sd card? or will that be alright? I don't want to lose all my pictures and videos.
If you can't get the phone into download or recovery mode then no the internal sd card is fried, the only files you can retrieve will be from the external sd or backups if you have any... sorry.

[Q] Razr getting hot so fast / charging.

hi guys, few days ago i put my razr on charge and after full charge (~2.5 hours later) it was so much hot, so i unplugged and wait some minutes to get at normal temperature.
nothing happens on rom/any software.
but since that day the phone gets hot too fast, like 1-2 minutes using it and it already hot, if i stay 5 minutes on it, the feel is like it getting explode.
did this happens to you? should i search for warranty?
* another question, when i use RSDlite to update the rom, it does not clear all data on phone, my internal storage remains there, have a way to do a total/full/mega/super wipe so i can take it to warranty without preocupations?

mine was quite the opposite, it is the coolest phone i've ever used (in normal condition). if you're already tried to flash ROM, then flash it back to stock will clear the matter a bit. if you haven't, better ask for RMA.

Already heard of that problem...
I've read that it could be related to external sdcard... I dont know why, i dont know how, but some people confirm that this works... Do you have one? Did you format it over your pc?
If you did, format it again over Android : Settings -> Storage -> Format External SD-Card. Maybe this solves your problem.

Instead of formatting the SD card you could just remove it and use the phone without it long wnough to see if the problem lingers. I ended up returning a razr for a warranty replacement because of it running hot like you described. The device during normal operation and charging would get so hot it was uncomfortable in my hand. That was right around the time one or two report of GS III melting started to surface. i called VZW, told them I felt it was unsafe, didn't feel comfortable letting my kids use it to play games, that kind of thing and they sent me a replacement without hesitation or issue.

Also after an hour after charging it fully its now at 85% after an hour .Usually its 93-4 percent after an hour. Also the Media is down to 34% now.

Yep After i put my SD Card back in the Media has gone up to using 65% of the battery.
use Rescan Media Root to disable it
So um i should use the rescan media after turning on my s3 always to stop it? Sorry for sounding a little thick.

Sorry friend, it doesn't work. I'm having the same problem some days after update to MC2 standard+CF-root6.4+Philz4.96 recovery+triangle. The extSD is switched-off alleatory when the screen is off. When it's switched on, the message: "SD extracted" appear and sometimes you get "SD card corrupt" too. For this reason the system in cotinously trying to update the SD content by multimedia. The battery comsume is then extremly bigger than normal. I've check formating the sd card but only works for a few hours, then it fails again. Now I'm trying to fix it reinstalling the CF-root. At the moment it's working fine. I´ll tell you something later. Some people say to be a hardware problem, but I think it maybe a problem during the rom updating.

This is different issue. OPs problem is different. OP can fix it like I said. No need to stop scanner. Well known bug when newer OS version sees old data on sd. Just copy data off card, format and copy data should solve it.
Your problem may need a thread of its own

Mate i did what you said but there was no difference. The only thing which did change though was that Media Scanner now uses 30% of the battery where system (*wakelock*) now uses 35% of the battery.
Maybe i am being a little superstitious. Umm if my phone is on standbye for an hour.Without wifi gps or anyting how much battery should it use?
It will still need to scan your entire sd card once you put data back on. if after 24 hours it is still doing it, maybe your sdcard is faulty. Try another one?
Well the media scanner has stopped! The system wake lock is still working but I will see till the next 24 hours
I don't think it will be a faulty SD card as it's been working for the last year or so!
But I'll keep you posted! Thanks alot for your help mate!

I don't think it will be a faulty SD card as it's been working for the last year or so!
But I'll keep you posted! Thanks alot for your help mate!

This can turn faulty you know But I only said this incase what I said didnt work, but now it looks like it did

Boot loop sorta

This is my best description of what happened. Any thoughts?
I was running AJK 4.6 and SuperNexus 2. I think my (up until now normal) battery went dead and the phone turned off (I'd received low battery warning). I plugged it in but it is apparently no longer charging.
While on the charger it turned itself on (middle of the night) and started running in some kind of bootloop. I would see the Samsung logo then it would flash a couple times and then sometimes cycle back and sometimes turn off. I probably should have waited until I could get a new battery but instead I started messing with it. I started thinking something may have gone wrong in the ROM/kernel/stweaks when it went dead so I decided to Odin back to stock. I did that and the same thing keeps happening. Stock successfully installed but won't boot. I see the boot logo then it either cycles back or turns off. As long as it's plugged in it randomly turns on and tries to boot. Battery does get hot. With just the battery the hard keys might (or might not) flash but nothing else happens. In all this I've never got recovery to boot although obviously got in download mode ok.
I'm actually due for an upgrade so may simply go ahead and get my SG4 but I'd still like to get some files from internal sd. Is this just a bad battery causing this? Shouldn't it boot when plugged in though?

No, the phone will not turn on with the battery pulled but plugged in, so if the battery is dead, then it will also not turn on with the battery when plugged in.

Does it make sense that a bad battery would cause the bootloop? I've ordered a battery so we'll see if that's the whole problem. It was just weird coming on in the middle of the night like that! LOL
Edit: still is randomly coming on and looping. Volt meter says 3.43
Edit2: got into recovery. Stock recovery factory reset would wipe my sd card - pictures and all - wouldn't it?
And, now I can't get the phone to turn off. If it's plugged in it cycles the loop continuously.

No, it doesn't really make sense to me. However, I have seen numerous people report exactly that behavior with the I777 over the past couple of years. So it seems likely that it could be the problem. Or it could be some kind of hardware failure. I think replacing the battery is the correct next troubleshooting step.

No. Factory reset only wipes the data partition. Your SD card is completely separate from the internal memory where bootloaders, kernel, system, data and other things reside.

"Delete all user data" sounds like it will delete the pictures in the camera's internal directory. If I've copied or moved files on to the external sd they're safe but won't all internal files - including pictures and documents - disappear?
Note: it's hard to sit on my hands and do nothing until my battery comes Wed so I'll prob end up wiping the phone which defeats the purpose of getting the phone to start so I can backup my stuff. Arghhhh!

Update in case anyone notices this thread - I did finally get the phone to boot after it sat on the charger all day (and it's fine) but the battery is still at 6% so obviously that is the problem. I'll have a new battery in a couple days and should be fine.

Wipe data/factory reset wipes the contents of the "data" partition. This is not the same as "user data." It will not touch your SD card. It will delete everything that is stored in the data partition, so all your user settings and system customizations will be lost. You'll lose text messages, call logs, address book, and a host of other things that are part of the system data partition, where system applications are installed. But applications that you download from the play store usually store their application data on the SD card, so while the applications themselves will be removed, the data will still be there. You photo album will definitely still be there after you perform a wipe data/factory reset. Please, you need to do some study.

I'd say be strong and wait. Trying a known good battery is the logical next step in troubleshooting.
No Factory reset does not wipe user data such as your pics, videos etc as creepycrawly said. And as far as you issue is concerned, I can say is replace your battery with a new one. I am pretty sure battery is the culprit here

Notice where it says deletes "content such as pictures". The internal sd gets wiped so it's gone unless I copied it to my little 2Gb card.
Fortunately, I didn't go there. I just threw it in a drawer to wait until Wed. ;>

Yes, actually, in stock recovery it does unless they are on external sd. Btw, I did put it back the way it was with cwm, ajk, and super nexus 2 without losing anything.

Glad to hear that you were able to recover! :good:
Just a reminder for when you replace your SII - the S4 has a locked bootloader so unless you get one that is PRE-MF3 update then you can only run rooted stock and no custom kernels.
What's your favorite device @AJ? Would you advise anything other than the S4? I like stock if it can be debloated but... my name is Sharon and I'm a flashoholic.

I really like the S4 so long as you get one that you can use custom ROM/kernel on. I am looking all over trying to find another 1 for myself since my original S4 got updated.
Or :
An international GT-i9505 S4 would be great, but NOT the S4 with the exynos processor.
A T-mobile S4 (probably the best S4 overall)

Actually, I was thinking more about learning how the phone works so you would have a foundation to understand issues such as this. Leave it to AT&T to put out dis-information. The fact that they included the word "pictures" in that support article is just wrong. Pictures are not saved into the data partition on the I777. You will note that the article also says "Data stored to an SD card will not be erased unless otherwise selected." That means both the internal SD card, and any external SD card. Since pictures are saved to the internal SD card, they are not touched by a wipe data/factory reset. All the other things mentioned in that article are accurate. You can verify this for yourself if you want. First save your pictures to your computer (if you are worried that the what I am saying is wrong) and then perform a wipe data/factory reset. You'll see that the pictures are still there afterwards. Or ask anyone here on the forums. Everyone uses a wipe occasionally and will know this.
I feel slightly offended by your implication that I'm ignorant about how my phone works. I'm not an expert but I've learned a lot in the last year and consider myself reasonably knowledgeable. I took your advice to ask the community. I will test it myself in a few days. Part of my personal experience is the "factory reset" on the stock kindle fire which definitely does wipe ALL user data.
Sent from my GT-p511x
On the SGH-I777, and presumably on other Samsung phones, when you perform a "Factory data reset" from within the system settings, there is a tick box that you can check which will also "Format USB storage" as the data wipe is performed. (USB storage is the technical term for the internal SD card.) However, when performing a wipe data/factory reset from within recovery, and that would include stock 3e recovery, there is no option to also format USB storage.
I am not familiar with Kindle, but I would not assume that the memory partitioning, or other functions of the device for that matter, would be the same or similar to a Samsung device.
And by the way, no disrespect was intended.
Thanks creepycrawly. I think that clears it up for me. See I learned something! ;p

First steps...

What is the first thing you will do with your phone? Remove bloatware? root? etc.

not joking. i am pretty sure it was preloaded. i went to the app store and it said installed, i chose not to restore backups from my google account. it didn't restore any other apps.
First thing I did was install all my personal apps, then debloated VZW junk.
One thing I always like to do with new phones is go through all of the preloaded ringtones and notification sounds. Some of them are so hilariously bad I'm actually tempted to use them.
First thing I did was enable ART in developer settings. I recommend you all do the same!
The first thing was root. By far the most important aspect for me.
Secondly, fought with my bloody MicroSD card. Had about 30GB of music, 20GB of ePSXe/PPSSPP games, a couple of thousand pictures (including recent ultrasound shots of my unborn child), and a full Titanium Backup folder from my S4. Removed said card from S4, even went so far as to unmount it from the storage menu. Popped it into my G3 and got the dreaded "Blank SD card" message. Tried slotting it into the S4 again. Same thing. Went back between the two devices and the card reader on my laptop for about fifteen minutes before giving up. Delved into forums for another thirty, no real luck besides finding out that the S4 seems to have a lot of issues with SanDisk's 64GB MicroSDXC card for some reason.
After much lamenting...formatted the thing, ran another backup of Titanium, finally got what I needed over to the G3. Cussed for another thirty minutes or so, smoked a few cigs, then got back to it. Froze a long list of bloatware/services I won't use. Installed Xposed and the G3 TweaksBox.
And now, nothing. It's more or less ready for me to swing by Verizon tomorrow and have them transfer it over to my line and reactivate my mother's dumb phone. Because well...As much as I am liking the G3, I wasn't about to give up unlimited data for it. Here's hoping someone can unlock the bootloader or find a loki workaround for the device!

Truthfully, not a whole let yet. This was my first chance to try ART as I'd heard from other device threads that it can improve overall performance and bring a slight boost to battery life. I definitely did notice there was little to no lag in certain apps compared to when I was running dalvik. Although, my G3 has shut off on it's own multiple times today and I only received it this morning so I'm more concerned about getting it stable

Don't jump the gun. Many people reporting bluetooth audio stuttering with screen off, wake locks, and random restarts with ART enabled.
i hope they make xposed compatible with ART soon

I feel your pain!!! My Samsung 64gb MicroSD also took a dump, when I removed it from my GS3. Went through the fuster-cluck as you, taking a fresh TB snapshot and everything. Thank goodness for FolderSync, which I use to back up my photos to the cloud, else I'd have been SERIOUSLY PISSED!

I should have held off. I did two factory resets followed by enabling ART each time and it froze on deep sleep each time. A 3rd factory reset and switching backed to Dalvik fixed my issues.

This. I rooted, titanium backup, removed bloat, installed my stuff, and swapped to ART. Just this morning I had 3 full freezes in a deep sleep that required battery pulls.
I just swapped back to Dalvik. At least I can use xposed. I have not done a factory reset. Going to hold off on that until it happens again.
I recommend others to not jump the gun as well. No, I only installed about 7 apps that are all stable. Avoiding anything truly custom for another week to make sure all is well with the device.
I hope this is emphasized enough by now. Please do NOT switch to ART on the Verizon G3. Many people had random freeze/power off problem with ART. Simply switch back to Dalvik fixed the problem.
The difference is night and day. On ART the phone stutters and gets really hot. I almost decided to return it before I realized all problem started after switching to ART. On Dalvik it's behaving more or less like a flagship is supposed to.
