If you keep it rooted at least, you can fix problems that way. Good luck.
From my Evo LTE, yup.

<Warning> People on Evo 3D getting the new OTA: do not update yet, unless you've already ran Revolutionary to S-OFF.
Yezzir, just saw that
(I am Un-Rooted, But I want to root today!) Am I reading this correctly? do NOT update with the OTA (8/18/2011) update, UNLESS I am already rooted?
So if I root today is it safe to update with that OTA update that came out today *8/18/2011?
I think the update does patch the current root method.
Plus for piece of mind don't ever accept OTA updates from sprint or HTC if you like your root and s-off.
I don't know why some people insist on running a update knowing in the back of their mind they'll possibly/probably loose root, and who knows for how long. Just wait a day or two for the devs to implement it in their ROMs.
You can still take the update because HTC just released the bootloader unlocked method for the HTC EVO 3d.

HTC unlocker = clusterfuck
Revolution = the correct way.
yea not understanding htc way ... unlocked bootloader but you still have s-on ?
Nobody even knows how HTC's unlock even works. There are Sensation users with S-Off and they used HTC's method. Unfortunately, there's about 10 posts like those above to 1 post of actual information about it.
Its looks like its a partial unlock.
I'm sticking with revolutionary, I have root, everything is working awesome, n I didn't lose my warranty
So your saying since I have s-off with revolutionary, I can take the update and still have s-off? Also will this update break root?

If you take the ota through system updates and if you have a custom ROM and recovery it will not allow you to update. It will give you an error message. If you decide to lose the custom recovery and go forward with the ota it will lock your phone with S-on and you will have no way going back to 2.3.3. You will be stuck with lastest ota 2.3.4 with S-on and no root. Then if you decide after that you can't get back to 2.3.3 and think since you can't go back might as well go forward with HTC's bootloader unlock method. It will unlock the bootloader but you still will have S-on and noway of flashing a custom recovery which means no root. If your dying for this update check out the dev section and I believe you can update the prl, kernel, firmware mins the hboot. Check it out. If it was me I would wait for revolutionary or a team that knows what they are doing to release an rooted ota.

My Evo 3D is unlocked, s-off, and running hboot 1.4. I know the OTA update for ICS and Sense 3.6 was just released, but I was wondering if there was a version of that update available that would allow me to upgrade without locking my phone or turning s-on? In other words a clean upgrade (preferably something i can flash from my phone) from android version 2.3.4 to 4.X (whatever the OTA update will upgrade me to) and HTC sense from 3.0 to 3.6. I couldn't find anything when I googled it, and the only thing close to what I was looking for here (hopefully I missed it and my answer is somewhere among the threads) required the wire trick, which im not 100% comfortable with.
Are you gsm or cdma?

If you unlocked and s-off you can flash almost anything you want, the wire trick is for s-on , you need s-off the flash the new firmware that is required fir ics, go to cdma devel. Section

You're already S-OFF, which means the wire trick doesn't apply, because the wire trick gives you S-OFF.
If you want the stock, rooted OTA, I would look here:

ok so when I flash this I will still be s-off and unlocked right? That's my main concern; I want to make sure rom toolbox, set cpu, wifi tether and all my other rooted apps I paid for work after I do this.

As long as you have s-off you're fine, the relocked thing doesn't matter, that happens to pretty much everyone who flashes the new fw s-off, don't worry about it.

I unlocked my bootloader with HTC dev, and have S-ON. Apparently, it is okay to flash roms in this state, having used this method. I don't want to try flashing, as I don't want to risk bricking my phone and I am waiting for either cyanogen mod for my GSM version of the Evo 3d, or a decent, working jellybean ROM. So, do I need to get S-OFF, or am I okay as it is? If I do need S-OFF, what would be the best way to do it?
Sent from my HTC EVO 3D X515m using xda app-developers app
Oh yes, and I have superuser, Google Now, CWM recovery and HBOOT 1.53.0007.
U don't need it but it makes things easier. My bootloader is locked but I have s-off. That's the way I prefer it. U really only need one or the other to flash roms.
Sent from my PG86100 using xda app-developers app
If you want to flash new firmware you do. If you want to flash a kernel, depending on your recovery, you need to be s-off or use a computer to boot recovery. If you want a custom splash screen, you need s-off.
Sent from my PG86100 using xda premium
I just installed the 4ext recovery and flashed a few roms. It can accommodate S-on to some degree. And its a lot easier than using the volume butttons to do anything in recovery.
You should give that a shot if you haven't already.
Is there much risk in using the wire method to gain s-off? I don't want to break any part of my phone and that sounds like it might... Im fine with the splash screen, and I don't want to mess with kernels. Would s-on restrict the usage of roms such as cyanogen mod, and is that rom likely to be released for the gsm evo 3d?

A lot of the ics roms that have true 3.x kernels that work better with updated firmware. You would have to s-on to update them. Unless you relock take all the otas the unlock again, but some roms based on the new OTA need the 1.58 hboot and all the aosp roms can't use it so it necessitates going back and forth with hboots. That also requires s-off.

it honestly doesn't hurt too much to do it, especially if you don't intend to fiddle around/flash ROMs with your phone too much.
Yeh man I was a bit skeptical to do it too, but after doing the research and finding out it was recommended to do S-off I was glad i did, and its fairly easy to do.

I don't think you can S-Off yet with the latest. DirtyRacun may support it now I could be wrong. Watch Qbking77's videos on YouTube to unlock and root your device. Good luck and welcome.

If you are already on 2.09 hboot, I think you have to use the hboot downgrade method to brick your phone and install an earlier hboot which will let you run dirty racun. It is by no means easy, and I don't know if there is still support for that method.

The only way to downgrade your HBOOT on this device IS to brick your phone (if you're S-ON, that is). I think you misunderstood. This device is much more locked down than the OG. "Forget everything you think you know."
But at this point, the downgrade method isn't supported (yet). I already bricked my Jewel trying it (granted, that was after the downgrade was completed successfully, but still).
The team that put together the downgrading tool is still working vigorously on confirming a method that will work reliably with the new HBOOT. Stay tuned.

^^^ This. The OG EVO and this phone are not the same. What worked on one won't necessarily work on the other. Just wait for an S-off exploit for the new Hboot, otherwise you'll end up with an expensive paperweight, like the Captain did:banghead:
