[Q] Will Updating a Rooted i9100 to Jelly Bean cause any issues? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey everyone I rooted my i9100 using this method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
Basically that method I was as close to stock as possible. In that I rooted the stock version of gingerbread I did not use any ROMs.
I am running android 2.3.4, baseband version i9100UHKG4
Kernel version 2.6.35.7-i9100UHKG7-CL417954 [email protected]#2
Build Number: GINGERBREAD.UHKG7
Now I would like to update to Jelly Bean and root while preserving all contacts, apps etc in their present state. Also since I am rooted are there any precautions I should take in updating the phone to jelly bean?
Can anyone point me to the right guides? I have tried searching but it seems to be information overload here and not finding a thread that can simply tell me what to do as in the previous thread.
Thanks for your help.

This will give you all you want.
And you can flash JB on GB. You will lose your root if you flash via Odin (PC)
pls read and learn and then do it...

Download latest stock JB firmware from http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/, then use Mobile Odin to flash it enabling EverRoot & inject Superuser options in settings!

[Q] Upgrading SGS2. Need goog adwice

Lords of Firmware and Gods of Root, need you attention!
Hi. I checked xda forum and cannot find full answer on my question.
Please, help me, if you can.
I recently bought sgs2 for me and my wife.
My wife use stock firmware and updating by OTA.
I have stock firmware with CF rooted kernel
When we bought SGS2 (From Poland) with latest GB stock firware.
We together updated by OTA to stock ([email protected] #3 IML74K.XXLPQ) firmware.
When I root my SGS2 with CF-Root-SGS2_XX_XEO_LPQ-PROPER-v5.4-CWM5 using Odin.
In 6 april we were reminded of a new version by OTA and I updated wife's phone. Now her firmware version is [email protected] #3 IML74K.XXLPS.
I want update my phone too, I read the posts about CWM and looked at thread "[02.04.2012][CF-Root 5.4] K/EFGHIJKLP*, LA2/4, LP1/2/6/B/H/J/Q/7/3/S - su+bb+CWM4/5" and understand how to do:
1)Download rooted kernel with name like CF-Root-SGS2_XX_XEO_LPS, but I cannot find this kernel - only CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_LPS-v5.4-CWM5.zip available.
Can I use this kernel or wait for CF-Root-SGS2_XX_XEO_LPS.
What difference in kernel between OXA (Maybe UK??) and XEO (Poland)?
2) Download stock kernel from samsung I9100XXLPS_I9100OXALPS_I9100XXLPS_HOME. I've done it.
3) Place to external_sd/firmware rooted kernel and stock firmware.
4) Using CWM App flash CF kernel, when flash stock firmware without kernal and wipe dalvic cache
Am I right? I not loose my apps and setting?
if I update my phone (with CF-Root-SGS2_XX_XEO_LPQ-PROPER-v5.4-CWM5) by OTA I loose root and CWM Recovery, but later can install CF root using Odin?

If you are already rooted and already downloaded stock firmware, why not try mobile odin to update. that way you won't loose root

[Q] Android newbie. Need a simple help.

Okay first of all as the title says, I'm new to the android OS. I successfully rooted my I9300 4.0.4 by reading and using the toolkit 5.0. So now I'm rooted with stock ICS. My question is, will I still be able to update into jelly bean build LJ4 via OTA or Kies? Will someone please enlighten me on this one. Thanks in advance.
Friend i think when we root ota update is blocked.but yes you can update it via Samsung kies.but you will loose root .
Also you can get yourlatest firmware (jelly bean or whatever) from samfirmware and flash it.

OTA: no
Kies: yes but you will loose root, hence re-root
Sammobile: download and flash via Odin, you will loose root, hence re-root
Sammobile: download and flash via Mobile Odin, you can keep root (pro version)
Hey thanks for the quick response for the both of you. Will try on kies first then sammobile if I'm not succesful. Will be any complications regarding your suggestions? Are those firmware from sammobile official?

yes, sammobile has official versions as well as leaks (marked with a orange sign), hence make sure you get the correct version.
There is also a neat guide to flash a rom in the stickies incl. a video.
Also you can try an option called "ota survival" in super user app.
But it do not works for all devices.

Steps are the following, not necessarily in this order
decide which JB rom you want such as
- more vanilla feeling: cyanogenmod, rootbox, etc
- closer to samsung stock: Neatrom, leaked JB rom
- download rom
- backup important stuff
- download latest odin
- flash via odin (from pc with device in download mode)
optionally, you can read some more on kernels and decide for a specific kernel.

In order to avoid brick bug, you just have to avoid ICS 4.0.4
Thank you

You flash zips via CWM.
Reboot device into recovery, wipe data/factory reset and then flash your rom zip.
The only reason I can see why you have created this topic/asked these questions is because you havent taken time to read any guides or any other topics/searched etc.
All the info you need is readily available no need to be spoon fed here.

root s3

hi there guys i am really new to all this rooting, i rooted my phone on the verison 4.1.1 and i know for my network the 4.1.2 has come out but it wont let me update it to that, is there anyway i can update it to 4.1.2 and keeping root
Cheers
Go to SamMobile and download the latest firmware for your network and flash it
yes there is. Go as decribed to http://www.sammobile.com/firmware/ and look for i9300 with ur network. Then flash via Odin. Keep in mind u will loose ur root and u will have to repeat the rooting process... at least if u want to gain root again,
cheers
If you have the app, you can use mobile odin and flash the firmware with it, you will keep root.

If you have a rooted device, you can directly go from 4.1.1 to (any 4.1.2) custom rom. You may have to wipe your device, follow the instructions in the specific ROM thread.
If you are a newbie to rooting / flashing spend more time in reading + choose correct rom for your S3 or else your phone would turn out-to-be a costly paper weight!

kernel is not equal rooting or recovery.
read the guides & howtos to know what is the difference. anything explained there.
a good start is cf-auto-root to root your phone, after that continue reading.

CWM will only be installed if CF-Root 6.4 is used, not with CF-Auto-Root (which is more secure regardign SDS)

I have read somewhere that by flashing a 4.3 rom can cause efs issues. So is it better if i flash a sammy 4.3 rom with odin? And then I can flash a rooting kerenel and a recovery right??

it is correct that it can come to problems when upgrading from 4.1.2 to 4.3 because Samsung introduced some changes that also effect EFS (e.g search for EFS v2). There are a few threads already that mention how to upgrade the best way, hence I would propose you to search them as I did not upgrade to a Samsung based 4.3 rom due to the fact that I am using SlimBean (AOSP based). Therefore I do not want to recommend you things that might be wrong.
For example http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2565599 same question
