Galaxy s3 wont turn on. maybe bricked? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello. i have a uk galaxy s3 and after i updated a few apps two days ago it started to lag a bit and freeze. now today it just turned off and wont turn back on.
The phones screen wont turn on or nothing comes on the screen when charging and the pc wont recognise it and there is no notification light on to say its charging (i dont know if it has a charging light when turned off though)
I think the firmware was 4.1 and it was rooted but i never put anything on there.
I have read that i should try holding down the power and volume keys but it still doesnt work.
is there anything i can do?

You can try taking it to the service center

Is there anything i can try first or do you think its bricked?
How would i find my nearest service center? or would it be better to take it to the phone shop i got it from?

trying a different battery has a very slim chance of working, you can do that.
you'd be better off taking it to the service center if you have the official samsung warranty

Sounds like sudden death
Only thing you can do is get in touch with your network and ask them to repair it
I suffered the same and o2 replaced the mainboard

i read that it will still turn on without a battery if you have it plugged into the wall. is this true because i tried that and it wont turn on.

that's not true

Also because it wont turn on and maybe bricked could they find out its rooted? becuase i doubt carphone warehouse or samsung (whoever i end up sending it to to be fixed) will fix it if they find out

If it's totally dead as mine was no they can't tell
Just don't tell them it was rooted or they won't repair
When i sent mine off to be repaired it was a 16gb board that was in but came back as a 32gb

Remove the battery for few minutes
I tried that, but it didnt help, I'll do it again now and be more patient...
Nothing, waited 12 min, plugged it to the power, no battery recharging sign. Tried to turn it on, nothing...
EDIT: it's very hot around the camera now... (still completely dead tho)

I think your phone is completely dead now.
Send it to Samsung repairs if your phone is still under warranty. They will probably change the motherboard.

You can try to use USB jig (although i really doubt it will work.
Your problem looks like a typical dead motherboard.
Sent... What do you guys think are the odds that they can find out that it was rooted and with a deodexed rom / theme?
Just throw it into the wall and phone will be puzzle.

If USB jig fails to work, then there is no way for them to find out anything.
After two weeks they came back to me saying that its the logic controller that is oxidized, which for some reason isnt covered by the warranty, so id have to pay 200 euro for it....:crying:

[Q] No reaction from phone whats however

I've got my awesome galaxy s3 for about 4 months now.
I'm still using the stock firmware and I rooted it a few weeks ago.
Today, the phone battery was at about 95%, it suddenly completely stopped working in any way.
No led flashes or turns on when I plug it in to charge. No reaction when I turn it on. No reaction from my pc when I plug it in.
I also tried ODIN/ download mode and whatever there is left. No reaction at all.
Also, the ODIN tool doesnt see the phone and the pc doesnt(device manager).
I hope anyone can help me

I have exactly the same problem, I have ordered a jig to see if i can get into download mode. I am told this could be a motherboard problem though.
I have changed my screen so i do not think samsung will fix it under warranty
May Sound Stupid... but have you taken the battery out and left it for a minute then put it back in?
sure have. Have done everthing, charged overnight, took battery out for an hour, tried different battery.
I took it to a repair shop in a shopping center and they said they think the motherboard is dead

Jup, tried that too, no change
Same thing happened to me too... Phone suddenly died. Still waiting for the jig. If not then service warranty for us is the best thing we can do.
Here's a update on my phone.
I tried to use a jig, a friend on mine had one, but no change there either. So I send my phone to samsung with the warranty. I was a little scared here because I rooted my phone. A few days back I luckely got a message that my phone was returned. Apparantly, it was broken so badly thay they didnt found out it was rooted. ^^
They replaced my motherboard and I never found out what was wrong, probably something fried...

[Q] S II dead :(

Hi all. I have a big problem. I placed my phone onto my desk before sleeping (my battery was +/-55%). When I woke up my phone did not want to go on. I tried charging it for 3 hours with my 2 pin charger and it still didn't want to come on (the charging battery animation didn't even show). I also tried charging with the USB cable via PC but that didn't help. I used my multi-meter to check if the battery was working and it showed that it contains +/-3.4V (battery is rated 3.5V). I tried to boot up into recovery mode (volume down + home button + power button) but it still didn't come on
I bought my phone at the beginning of the year (brand new) and it has been working with no problems until today. I have essential data on my phone (phone book, messages, apps etc) which are really important and I wouldn't want to lose them. Help would be much appreciated.

But how can it get bricked out of the blue? Was working perfectly night before happened. The only app I installed was Angry Birds: Star Wars (officially from Play Google Market).
Hard to say. Phones (like any other electronics) can die for all kinds of obscure reasons.
Service centre or JTAG repair; if you choose the latter option (assuming it can be JTAG'd & it's not a hardware issue), you could ask the repairer if they can recover your data. Might be possible. Service centre will wipe it if it if it's not a hardware issue, and if it is, they'll replace the MB which means you get new internal storage/you'll lose your stuff.
LOL.
Its happened to me and its just a BUG...
you may have 100% of battery but the phone is showing like 50%(fake)
put the charger into the phone hold the bottom of the usb (the last piece .. of the charger) and move it
(move it when it's plugged into the phone

My phone not showing anything (even fake indicator). I did as you said: held and moved around the bottom of the USB (part plugged into phone), while the phone was charging (using 2-pin charger) but did nothing. I just tested my phone with a friend's S II battery and it didn't help

No I don't. I heard that there is a way to make your own 'jig'. Can it be done? and if so what are methods?

Why make one? It costs < 5$ (even for 1$ in ebay) anyway. Worth a try.
Same Issue
I have the exact same issue with my i9100. I woke up and it was dead. No recovery mode, no download mode, nada...nothing comes up on screen. It has been a little buggy ever since the ICS update but it has always worked eventually. I put the battery into my friend's phone and his worked fine. I am really hoping somebody has answers and it is just not "dead". I never used a ROM or anything, it's killing me that a $500 can just die overnight like this. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
If your phone is still under warranty, go to Samsung service center.
Sent from my GT-I9100
I can not believe that just happened overnight, the only possibility is that you put some of the room's, if you have a warranty on the device, you can send it to the service and just hope that they will accept it and serviced

[Q] S2 completely dead but unlike other problems

Well I was taking a video and I stopped recording and the camera app froze and I couldn't get any response out of the buttons but the camera app still showed the camera and that was still working so the phone wasn't actually frozen. So to turn it off I held down the power and home button and the phone turned off. Ever since then my phone won't turn on. I've read so many forums and I've tried so much e.g soft reset, hard reset, download mode, upload mode, USB jig and nothing works. When I put the phone on charge the left side of the camera gets warm (not hot).
Samsung galaxy S2
Orange UK
Resurrection remix rom
I bought the phone on amazon so I can't send it to Samsung as I have no warranty and I'm also rooted.
The battery had 50% charge before dying
You can change the mother board but it will be costly. Do a JTAG Repair.

Any other ideas where I don't have to spend a lot of money. Also I haven't tried a new battery but I doubt that's the problem because the phone
froze before dying
you should try another fully charged battery first................usually when my phone freezes for some time and when i take off the battery and re insert............i usually lose 10-30% battery, sometimes more than 30%

[Q] Sudden Death for S3

I was driving and my phone was in my pocket. There is no way it was hit or got wet, I was driving whole time. Next time I took my phone, it was off. I tried to press power button and also hold it, nothing happened. I though my phone was stuck (never did it before) so I pulled out my battery, waited 10 minutes, put it back in and tried again. Nothing. I also had charger in my car and tried with that, nothing happened. No LED light, no screenlight, no vibration, nothing.
Now few hours after I am home and started to check whats wrong with my phone. I tried with original charger, nothing. My girlfriend also has S3 so I tried with her battery, nothing. She put my battery into her phone and noticed that it didn't go on. Funny thing is that I took my phone off charge this morning and phone was on for maybe 4 hours before this "death" happened. I took my multimeter and checked voltage. It was 0. Not 0.4 or 2.1 but 0.000. I checked my girlfriends battery also if my meter was broken but I got normal value from her battery. I plugged my charger into my phone and left it for 15 minutes. I tried to check voltage again and it was still 0.
Question is, did my MB broke and created short circuit resulting emptying my battery completely or did my battery flip and broke my phone at the same time? Also, are both cases under normal warranty and will Samsung still repair/replace my phone even if I had it rooted and installed MIUI? Reason I ask this is that my phone won't be sent to samsung for nothing and that they won't ask me to pay for shipping and investigating problem (I don't even want to know their hour wages for this).

Thanks for your reply. I did try it and also stated this on my post. Sorry if it was hard to read.
Broken motherboard suggests physical damage = no warranty.
Rooted and custom rom = no warranty
Will Samsung see its been rooted ??
Boots to download mode ??

But funny thing is that my phone didn't take any physical damage, it has never falled from big height (maybe something like 10-20cm and always to soft surface like carpet). It was working when I put it into my pocket and was broken when I took it. I was in the car whole time, not moving from drivers seat.
I'm not sure if Samsung will see if it is rooted since phone doesn't boot at all (tried with working battery). No vibration, no LED light, no screenlight. It's like trying without battery.
Do you think I should try and send it to Samsung or just throw it to trashcan?
If the motherboard is DOA then they won't try to fix it, just replace it and your battery (if the battery is under six months old). Well worth sending for warranty, at worse you'll pay the postage and refuse the repair if they try to charge you.
send it in, only option
Agree suck it and see .

My phone and battery are over 1 year old so no warranty for my battery. I just though maybe problem is at on/off switch but then again it doesn't explain my empty battery. I am now charging my battery on my girlfriends S3 and seems like it is charging so I guess problem is on my phone only. I will take my phone to local shop and they will send it tomorrow to Samsung. Thank you all for fast answer, lets hope best that they will switch whole motherboard and wont notice rooted phone.

Hello,
I am experiencing the same issue as well with my phone. I have left it on charge overnight and the phone stopped working. I have tried all the steps above but without any luck. If I take the phone for repair as you advise, are there any charges involved? And if they are, how much is the average cost for me to be ready for it and avoid getting a heart attack.
Thank you in advance for any replies.
If covered by warranty then there should be no charge, SDS is due to Samsung problem.
But if warranty is not available then allow £200 for a new motherboard.

Well with the situation that I have with the phone at the moment, is it even possible to detect the root?
If the motherboard is completely dead then no, they won't find root (root alone doesn't invalidate warranty in the EU). The only problem might be if JTAG restores bootloader and flashed counter.
