Any ideas why I have low ram?
I am running Paranoid 2.99 and before i was using JellyBam 5.2 and I only have like 30mb of ram free
And even before I was using JellyBam 3.2 and i always had like 200 mb of ram free
Is this a 4.2.1 problem or what it could be?

AFAIK its not related to 4.2.1 base since i am using RR3.1.3 based on 4.2.1 and have no such issue's seen.

Is it causing problems? If not, why worry about it? Android RAM management has ben discussed repeatedly, and low free memory typically should not be a problem. The OS is trying to use the available memory (having it free is kinda useless), and is pretty good at managing it between active tasks. But if you are having issues because of the low RAM, it's a different matter...

As you can see in the screenshot attached, the part that I've specified with red color (and bad edit!) shows that lots if my RAM capacity is consumed by something that has not being shown in the list above.
Its way smaller when I start up the device (or install a new ROM) but gets more space from RAM after a few hours of usage.
The other question is why this part gets bigger over time and is there a way to decrease it without rebooting the device?
My phone is a Nexus S with CM7.1 on it and I even use the ramscript tweek.

You can remove any unwanted services that run in the background, or freeze apps using titanium backup until you actually use them (I freeze face book and voodoo when not in use)

if it would decrease I had no problem and wouldn't open this new thread! It's about 50 hrs that it hasn't decreased a bit.
Android only closes the cached processes when needed.
I know how android's auto RAM management works, but it doesn't work as it should IMO.
I'm using android for 2 years and yet to find a solution for this other than rebooting the device, and it only solves it for couple of hours of heavy usage.

Yes, it is the same, but when you have a device with a lot of RAM (768mb+), it doesn't really bother you.

I noticed the same problem. The low RAM is the main reason for most of the system and app lags. When the free RAM is above 70MB, the system is pretty smooth, but after half-day usage, it drops to <40MB and it becomes very laggy. I really hate some apps, cuz once you open them, they never quit from the RAM like facebook, google +, etc..
To keep free memory art a certain value, you have to set the value of low memory killer, here is a script from semaphore kernel that sets free memory to 64 mb. There are many such scripts around. Place script in init.d directory if your kernel supports this, oh, and make it executable.
#!/system/bin/sh
echo "2560,4096,6144,12288,14336,16384" > /sys/module/lowmemorykiller/parameters/minfree

I use the V6 SuperCharger from the first link. It works awesom . With the V6 SuperCharger you do a custom setting where you can choose how much free Memory you have. One last thing, i would stay away from task killers. They tend to use more Memory then they actually save. Most of the time they kill processes that need to be running. Then those processes have to restart using even more Memory.

I'm experiencing sudden freezing of Walkman app on my LWW (running stock ICS 4.0.4), and it sounds to me like some background process/application is hogging the CPU, causing Walkman to sound like a scratched cd. It does not happen often, but when it happens, it's really annoying. I never had those kind of problems before, when i used Winamp (back on Gingerbread).
Does anyone know some 'quick fix', or maybe a way to change thread priority to 'high' (if such thing exists on android ? - i'm still fairly noobish on that matter) for a Walkman app ?
Thanks
Wrong section man...
That's because you have many running background apps. Check your running apps, n close the unused user app.
Sent from my Nokia 3310
FYI Android is based on Linux.
Something is running in background, go check it from Settings-Apps-Running. It will show you what is running at the moment. You can also close some of these.
Yeah, i know Android is based on Linux, i'm just not considering myself as advanced Linux user.
There aren't many backround processes running, i'm using task killer. I also removed most of bloatware. I haven't noticed any application behaving in simmilar manners. None of the games lag or suddenly freeze like this application does, and i'm sure they are much more demanding on CPU/GPU and RAM.
I'm suspecting memory leakage...
Get rid of the taskkiller.
If an app starts, it needs more resources, so more memory and CPU.
Android is built to kill apps itself when it needs memory.
are you using a powersave or some other lower freq governor in lockscreen?
that has a tendency to break up the music when governor has a slow scaling.

first,
app killer is nonsense,
why?
mostly no android apps are actually larger than the ram itself, so multiple apps may be cached in the ram. so it actually helps in loading the app faster from the ram than from the flash memory.
so an app killer is utterly useless since you will just be starting the thing from flash instead of using the cached one thus using more cpu and in turn will also take more time to load.
thus each time you kill something, it's service will try to restart it, using more cpu than your actual intention which was to save it.
Yeah, i guess you're right about the app killer.
I just compaired stock media player CPU usage vs. Winamp, and it does not look good ~35-40% vs. ~8-15%
I think something is broken in Walkman app :S Can anyone check out and tell me how much does your Walkman app uses CPU %?
have you a other Music app installed ?
yeah, like i said, i have winamp installed, which uses much less cpu than the stock player, and never had those kind of issues before.
try clearing data and cache of walkman app.
Didn't help. Cpu usage is still too high. Even tried turning equalizer off.
Hi,
Has anyone else noticed this? When I freeze bloatware in Titanium Backup on a stock Sammy rom, my device begins te lag a lot more than usual. But when I leave all of the bloatware, it's way smoother, is this even possible?

U might have frozen them but the phone still tries to activate them through startup.
Download ES task manager and remove the start up of the bloat you froze and then reboot the phone.

You catch my drift, I guess. Just basic stuff I don't ever use. I've got the same effect when I just disable them in Applications manager.
Also, I flashed LL5 recently and I didn't disable anything at all, runs smoother now but I do notice some lags sometimes as I run out of ram.

Added it now, XDA-app was acting funky.
Hmmmm I'd suggest downloading one of the de-bloat mods or using a custom rom such as WanamLite or Omega with bloatware removed or Foxhound Essentials (Skinny rom) or Hyperlight. Any rom can be stripped of fat but some do it easier. Hyperlight is only 230mb in size where as most roms are around 800mb although I found this version of hyperlight to be a bit laggy at times. I used to find WanamLite laggy at times but this current version (in my sig) and without all the crapsung apps runs so smooth. .
If you want to squeeze in a bit more ram, use Perseus kernel which raises the limit to 856mb of ram compared to your 832. Don't worry if you get to down to around 120mb free, just means apps you use are in ram. If you see apps you never use being cached in ram then use an app like Autostarts to disable them from loading at boot or just freeze them totally

No offence to the hard working developers and all, but I've tried about 2 dozen of 3rd party roms / custom roms so far and yet, I haven't seen any rom that doesn't lag at all and I always keep getting back to stock Sammy rom.
Right now I'm on stock 4.1.2 with stock everything and no apps disabled or whatsoever and it runs like a motherf*cking train.
Okay, ram usage is at ~100-150 MBs free, but seems to be waaaay smoother than stock rom with disabled apps or debloated. Don't know why though.
Anyways, thanks for your help and for the replies!
Is there any rom that improves multitasking significantly?
Thats the only problem i really have with the S3.
I tried CM once and it was almost the same. So no option.
thx
You could try using swap on your memory card. You would need to format and create a new swap partition on your memory card (never on internal memory!) and use a custom kernel that supports swap. Eg. Yank

You could try boeffla kernel which provides zram (fast in memory swap) this along with greenify will provide enough free ram to enable much better multitasking

This issue has been discussed over and over again. I recently posted my opinion in an other thread. Anyways, i am pasting my response here, so that you can read what i have done with my phone to improve multitasking.
The truth is that although the stock touchwiz roms offer stuff like multi-window, they are really REALLY laggy in my opinion. I once decided to flash a cm10.1 (aosp) based rom. I haven't regretted since. I felt as if i had a completely new phone. I suggest you try such a rom. you wont regret it.
Also, there are some apps that allow you to freeze background processes. I use Rom Toolbox pro for example and i have frozen many background apps so I've reduced the amount of ram being used. Search on xda, there is a thread about which backgroung services are safe to be frozen.
Also, use greenify. Greenify stops apps from running in the background when you dont need them. Maps for example keep running in the background consuming 20mb for no reason. Greenify such apps so that they consume your ram only when you need them to do so.
Plus, change your LMK settings. The Low Memory Killer is an android service that kills apps when the amount of ram falls beneath a limit. Use an app such as Rom Toolbox to lower your limits so that apps don't get closed so often.
Finally, try zram with the appropriate settings. I use Googy-Max kernel which has bult-in zram support. I use 600mb of zram with 80% swappiness.
Having these things altered i can run at least 5 apps simultaneously without any problems. For example i run facebook and messenger along with whatsapp and skype. When i open the browser to search for something, none of the other apps gets closed.
Ofcourse if you try to run many apps, you may experience app-closing or lags. But remember, the key, is to close apps that you dont need.
Hi,
I have gs3, rooted, running on stock firmware 4.1.2.
the problem im facing is usually after a day of usage, the ram reaches 700mb. and even when I try to clear ram, it only closes 1 app and doesnt clear much of my ram.
I have done some research regarding this issue, and I know how linux handle ram differently than windows, but this high consumption of ram really is lagging down my phone. (harder to type, delay when flipping through home screen etc)
any solution for this? is there an app that really "clears" up ram?
thanks in advance.

Install Greenify from the Google Playstore and use it to hibernate the memory hogging apps. That will also help save your battery. Also, never close apps forcibly.
See multiple identical posts try and actually understand android and how it uses ram .
