[Q] Galaxy SII WiFi can't be activated - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I've just gotten a Galaxy S2 and I'm not able to switch on the WiFi-adapter... I have Android 4.0.4 on it and it just tells me that tha WiFi is gonna be activated endlessly...
I've searched here in the forum and on the internet a bit and it seems that many people encountered similar problems after they've updated from an older software version to ICS... I've already tried many things people reported on those threads to get their WiFi working again like:
every kind of wipe
downgrading to a Gingerbread firmware
using cutom kernels/ROMs (AOKP-Rom, CyanogenMod, Siyah-Kernel)
many different APKs that seemed to fix the WiFi issue on some devices (like WiFix or FXR WiFi fix and rescue)
but nothing of the above mentioned approaches worked out for me...
I've also found a post of someone who managed to get it working by making "wifi:wifi" the user of /data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf and change its permissions to 0777... This didn't work out neither...
And here's the really strange thing now: I was able to connect to our home network once. All i had to do was to change the WLAN-frequqncy bandwidth (I'm not sure how it's called on an english firmware, I use a german one) in Settings/WLAN/Advanced from "Auto" to "2,4GHz" for that is what I'm using at home... After I got the WiFi working with this i restarted the phone to see if this really solved the problem, but then the WiFi was gone again and since then I'm not able to change this setting anymore because the phone doesn't save any changes I make for this option in the Advanced settings anymore. When I change this setting, leave the advanced settings section tha WiFi doesn't work and when I open advanced settings again the WLAN-frequency bandwidth is set to "Auto" again.
So I'd like to ask if anyone has an idea what else I might try to get it working or if anyone knows where the config-file is where the above mentioned settings are saved so that I could try to change this manually or if anyone encountered a similar problem and already knows the solution for it...
Btw, I don't think that this is a hardware issue because like I mentioned above I was already able to connect to the network successfully once...
thanks in advance

There are some reports of leaked acid from the internal button battery (BAT500) which ruined some surrounding components, such us some resistors causing WiFi malfunction.
Not sure if that could be your case, but it could be worth give it a try and disassembly your SGS2 just in case. If you have a damaged/leaked internal battery then you could just remove it and clean the zone with CRC. That battery just helps to store the date and time when the "big" battery is removed.
This is a link to a spanish forum where you will find some pictures of the affected battery: http://www.htcmania.com/showthread.php?t=454012
And this is a "how to disassemble SGS2" video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=65pvAINg2ME

[Fixed] WiFi Issue On Venom

I am having a peculiar issue. My Wi-Fi drops out and then reconnects every 30-45 minutes or so. I have the latest version of the ROM, flashed the boot.img in the thread, but it still doesn't fix my issue. It doesn't matter how far I am away from the signal, it just drops out temporarily, and then reconnects. I can't explain it. Other than that, it seems to be working great, but before I rooted and flashed, I never had any issues of any kind with the WiFi.
Also, it may be worth noting that I don't know for sure yet, but it may also turn on the WiFi automatically even though I have it set not to. Sometimes when I am out and about, I'll get a popup saying that WiFi networks were found nearby, do you want to connect etc...
Any help will be appreciated, I love this ROM and can't see myself going back on stock but this is a pretty cumbersome issue...
Re: WiFi Issue On Venom
Have you tried it out on other routers?
And fir the asking to join networks, there is a setting in wifi>advance for that.
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using xda app-developers app
About the only thing that I haven't tried is another router, but the other devices on the network don't seem to be having any issues. Then again, it is an Airport, so...Yeah, I won't fully know until I get a chance to test it elsewhere...
But I know about the advanced setting and have it disabled. That's why I'm wondering it its something in the ROM or something that I did wrong that it keeps trying to come come back. My guess is that it's disconnecting the mobile network and resetting it, just as it is doing on the WiFi...
Update
Just in case someone else runs into this issue, the problem was with an app that I used to change my host name. It would intermittently interrupt my connection trying to do that. I uninstalled it and edited my build.prop file the old fashioned way. The issue didn't have anything to do with Venom, just the fact that I had rooted and tried new things.
Thanks for your help!
This was the app that caused the issue: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tiranodroid.change.hostname

Can you please go to the advanced editing options and change the name of your thread and place "Fixed" in there so people can reference it, if need, and what app it was. Thanks.

[Q] WiFi obtaining ip address

Hi,
As my title said, i don`t know how to get pass this problem. Until a few days ago my home wifi connection was running smooth but one morning it`s just got stuck on "obtaining ip address". I`ve tried factory reset, changing to another JB stock rom, changing kerrnel to PhilZ v5.06.6 Safe Stock Kernel, again the same problem. Reset my wifi modem was not the answer either. Do you have any other suggestion for me ?
Thank You !!!
Allocate static IP rather than dynamic via DHCP (Google is your friend). Someone else asked this exact same question/had this exact same problem last week & fixed it by doing this.
Edit - Update your router firmware if that doesn't work, then try with both a dynamic IP & static IP again once you've done that/if you need to do it.
the static IP is for the phone or for the modem ?
EDIT : Never mind mate, I found the solution! Thanks! I changed my phones IP into static.
Good man. And good job working out how to do it yourself
You're the 2nd person this has worked for over the past week, so we'll make this the standard 'first thing you try' when people are having this problem (I will at least).

Yes, but this is a solution only for your hot-spot at home where you can change the settings of the router, not for every hot-spot you encounter.
That's right. But you're never going to be able to fix problems like that (accessing a 'public' hotspot, etc) because you obviously don't have access to the router you're connecting to. Every now & then, something funky gets introduced to WiFi drivers in some builds of some kernels (exactly what, ??), causing problems with connecting to/maintaining a connection to some routers.
So, the problem is back... After few minutes of working, the Wi-Fi is yet again making problems. It keeps connecting to the network and then it keeps disconnecting and, while connected, the internet isn't working. In the attachment you'll see the setting I made on the phone. Is there anything wrong with them?
Then you try the other thing I suggested.
Edit - Also, what I meant when I said 'allocate static IP' is, at the router's end, tell the router to issue a static IP for that device (your phone), normally you can 'tell' the router - for device with MAC ab:01:cd:23:ef (as an example, the MAC of the WiFi adapter in the phone), allocate whatever static IP you want to use. Almost all routers should allow you to do this, I'm not going to tell you how to do it, because 1) It's not a phone thing & 2) How to do it will vary widely depending on the router.
So, after trying all software methods i found out that it`s a hardware problem. After making some deeper research i found that the faulty component was BAT500 leaking acid on the motherboard right on the Wifi circuits ( sadly this is o common problem on the s2 after going on ICS or JB ). Now i had two choices: either send my phone back to samsung service or to fix it myself. Since my warranty was gone i`ve tried the second method which was quite simple. All i had to do was disassemble my phone and clean the leaking with a brush and some alcohol, and now the wifi is working flawless.I don`t know if this is a permanent solution but i`ll try to update on the progress.
Nice work tracking down what was causing the problem Hopefully this thread gives people something to look at when they've tried everything else & it hasn't worked.

Hi i am facing the same problem. wifi in my s2 got stuck in the middle. Its not powering on, also it doesn't show powered off as well. I am on stock rom with mods. Did nandroid backup, factory reset, complete wipe, used other roms as well but non of them worked. Could there be some hardware related problem or heating problem or problem with BAT500? How did you diassemble your phone and cleaned that acid? can you please suggest some video links on this?
Search for the Samsung service manuals. Do a Google search; appending 'XDA' to your search terms should throw up some threads here where people have attached the files to posts. The manuals detail how to do pretty much every fix they do at service centres with pics, have parts lists, detailed diagrams that show where everything is. That should help.
Edit - Please don't post to multiple threads one after the other about the same issue (you revived a >6 mth old thread in that other one you posted to).

[FIXED] Wifi connected but no traffic

Hi Guys,
i have a problem.
Since a couple of days, the wifi connection on my i9100 does not work anymore. I tried multiple roms but to no avail.
The thing is that the wifi connection is established, but nothing works.
I tried different roms, router resets (but the problem occurs on any wifi connection).
Any ideas?

may be its a problem with your device karnel version. try to use stoke karnel, i had this problem once. then i flashed stock karnel using odin. then solved
Thanks for the reply, i tried it and i am now running stock. BUT the problem still persists.
This could not be a hardware problem could it? since the wifi is connected?

Ive had this happen to both my my Note 2 and my SGS2 LTE before that. With the Note 2, No matter what rom/stock firmware i flashed it never got better and I ended up selling it at a loss, but the SGS2 was made better when I flashed to stock then reflashed a Cm 4.2.2 rom. Maybe try that?

I just tried it with an CM 4.4.2 rom, that did not fix the problem. i will try to flash a 4.2.2 rom next.
Any ideas?
Given what you've already tried, flash the 3 part firmware from Hopper8's 'Odin troubleshooting' thread stickied in the General section. If you can get WiFi working on that, then reflash a more recent stock rom. If it's still working, then reflash whatever custom rom.
Might not work, but worth a shot given the 3 part will wipe your phone & might get rid of anything funky that might be causing this (don't forget to back stuff up before you flash it).
That it happens with every WiFi network you try to use is a worry though, and probably points either to something really simple we're all missing here, or a hardware issue.

I will try that when i get back from work. But i've been thinking, how is it possible that it is a hardware issue? i mean the phone still connects, something hardware related can not be partially broke right?
You'd think not (that it wouldn't be a hardware issue), but you've tried pretty much everything you can on the soft/firmware side, and it obviously isn't something on the WiFi network side unless all the WiFi networks you've tried & failed to get data flow to/from have this problem.
One thought I did have since my last post...I can't remember whether it's possible to do this on the S2 (it is on the S3/S4) as it's been months since I've even looked at mine; if you delete a WiFi connection in settings, then when you re-add it, are you able to choose between DHCP & static for IP address (might be in advanced settings if you check the box) ? If you're able to do this, choose a static IP address (I use 192.168.1.168 on my S4) rather than DHCP & see how that goes.
If that's not possible or it doesn't work, then try flashing the 3 part. Make sure you test once you've flashed it without restoring anything or installing any apps first to rule in/out something on the app side of things causing the problem.
THe 3part Odin flash did also not work. Is there a last resort solution, or is this it. Should I accept that my phone is broken

pheraps there is a problem with your modem version. Try to flash an other modem using recovery.
isnt that what i did in the 3 step flash from hopper8?
No, it's not. There's a big difference between flashing a 3 part rom & just simply flashing a modem. However...
It won't work anyway because WiFi has nothing to do with the modem (WiFi drivers are in the kernel).
Did you try what I suggested with removing the connection in phone WiFi settings & re-adding it with a static IP (presuming this is even possible on the S2) ?
If you did & it didn't work, or it isn't possible after all, take it to a service centre or local mobile repair shop.
or just buy a new phone as i did. I will keep you posted if the static ip worked.

Holy &^#(*^ that worked! a static IP worked. How is that possible?!
The short answer ? Magic
The long/non-tech answer; the connection between the phone/router is basically dropped & constantly re-established over & over & over (we're talking about once a second or less; basically looping like that) which means you've never got a stable connection long enough to get any data flow with a DHCP allocated IP.
There's threads on here somewhere that explain it better/explain 'the why' if you're interested enough to search for them; sorry, I don't have bookmarks handy & it's 5.30am here so I'm going to bed.
Important thing is, problem solved

100% thanks, i've looked around on the forum and see now that you've helped multiple people solve this problem. That is great.
[FIX]
For the people that read this thread, fix the problem by applying a static IP for their WIFI and think "but what about all the public accespoints that do not allow static IPs?? Will i never be able to use them anymore?"
Don't worry
The problem is not so much the fact that the phone suddenly needs a static IP on certain WIFI accespoints, but that it needs an assigned DNS. Through some "magical" "unexplainable" reason some of our phones suddenly go broke in a weird way that everything works, but no DNS is assigned on specific WIFI spots (mostly WPA2 protected).
Solution:
Set a fixed DNS for all WIFI connections
Google Play has multiple apps that will apply a fixed DNS.
[edit] after this debacle i bought a second hand i9300. The first couple of days, it worked perfectly but soon it started to display similar behaviour as my i9100. That is when i started to look for other possible solutions for the problem. I soon found out that the Ip adress that was handed out by my router was off. it was 192.168.2.xxx instead of 192.168.1.xxx as is setup in my router settings. That is why entering a static IP solved the problem for my i9300. After restoring my router to factory settings everything is normal. My router is a Tp-link wr740N with DDWRT flashed on it. Maybe this information will also help other users
Good job digging up the DNS info, hopefully this helps people in future/they don't spend days pulling their hair out trying to fix this issue

[Q] Having some issues with aggressive wifi to cellular handover

My issue is that I am constantly stepping outside, out of reach of my modem, and I'll have to turn my Wi-Fi off or my phone will stay connected to the the incredibly weak wifi signal.
So, I tried turning the dev option for "aggressive wifi to cellular handover" on thinking this would help and allow me to just leave wifi turned on while stepping outside and have it switch over to data without my assistance. And it worked, for the most part (it still held on to wifi signals *I* would deem too slow, but not often), BUT whenever I reboot the option in dev settings un-ticks so I have to go back in and turn the setting back on.
My question is, is there a way to prevent the aggressive wifi to handover from turning off on reboots, or is there another option I could try that may even be more aggressive?
Thank you in advance!
Have you tried the setting to automatically disconnect from a poor WiFi signal? It's under WiFi>settings>advanced WiFi>avoid unstable connections

I have the same problem, discovered the same solution, and have run into the same issue with no persistence after reboot! I'm googling now for a solution because going into developer options every reboot is incredibly damaging to the smoothness of the user experience I've worked so hard to customize.
Whether I find a solution or not I'll post in this thread again to let you know. If the latter is the result I will personally either write a tasker script, init.d script, or if nesseceary an Xposed module depending on factors I've yet to research. Can you Beta test for me if it comes to that? Maybe it's as simple as editing build.prop, I don't know yet, but I wanted to make this post ASAP so that you know you aren't alone on this and someone capable is working on the issue. For a developer like myself tapping menus every boot is unacceptable! Hopefully there is already a fix out there in the wild and I won't have to do any work.
P.S. Don't forget to also enable cellular radio always active for fast network switching at the price of some battery life. It's a few options below aggressive handover in Developer Options and thank jolly the setting is sticky unlike it's counterpart. Also, sorry for the poor turnout on your thread. I figured there'd be 100 posts by now, but at least you got my attention.
Edit 1: "setprop persist.{i-dont-know-yet}" in terminal emulator may do the trick. Checking for variables for the setting we want now. Hopefully they exist!
Edit 2:  I FOUND EVERYTHING I NEED FOR A FIX!!! However, an Xposed module will be required. I need some sleep but I should have something by tomorrow night. In case any other developers are reading this, here is the information required to make things work the way Iwe want them to:
http://android.stackexchange.com/qu...-cellular-handover-option-in-developer-settin
https://android.googlesource.com/pl...ndroid/settings/DevelopmentSettings.java#1061
Edit 3: Now that I know how this setting actually works together with wifi_watchdog (see source code WifiWatchdogService.java) I think I may have changed my mind regarding how to go about solving the root problem at hand (network switching) which this setting really does a "hack" job of taking care of. The developer that made it decided on a arbitrary, static number to be used for decreasing the connected WiFi AP's RSSI value (thereby making handover more "aggressive") instead of exposing any kind of grainular control to the user. So yes I could easily make the developer options setting stick but a much better approach would be to hook the method android.net.wifi.WifiManager with an Xposed module and implement additional logic to the network switching. The great thing about this method is there is the possibility for adding additional checks besides just periodically pinging the current primary dns server and monitoring the delay and timeout of the result. I also know for a fact modding the framework persists after reboot which is afterall all we originally wanted to have. The second or alternative route would be to edit the secure settings database using SQLite. The pro of this method is it is guranteed to be compatible with nearly ANY rom, won't break anything after an update, and doesn't use resources like an Xposed module. The con is that you are limited to the variables built into android, can't implement any new logic, and the worst is that I'm not even sure the modified tables would even persist after a reboot (or network state change for that matter) which if true would defeat the original purpose of this expedition. I'll make a fourth edit to this post after I've thought about and considered how to best proceede to reaching the goal of having a solution to our problem. :victory:

First of all, thank you so very much for looking into this!
I'm sorry for not responding sooner, but I had honestly lost hope of finding a solution to this issue mainly because I am not a developer myself and haven't the foggiest how to get started with it on Android
But when I opened my notifications and saw a response to this post (!) I got *extremely* excited, and as I read through your post, my excitement intensified to great happiness!
I can't express my gratitude, but I would be more than happy to help with anything that I can!
Any news on this?
Has anyone found a solution?
Had anyone found a solution that doesn't require root access?
Can we expect that fourth update any time soon? Any solution without xposed?
I'm following this thread in the event that someone finds a non-rooted solution. The Galaxy S7 really cannot be rooted without a serious performance hit (and yes I've gone through the two or three best/popular lag-fix solutions) but it works best in stock :-/

Galaxy S3 GTI19300 Wifi Only Works Close Range

GTI19300 Wifi problem
Hi folks.
I will start simply, my wifi only works when im very close to my router.
When im at certain distance, it appears an "authentication problem", that suddenly disappears if i get close enough to the router.
I already have searched for solutions, nothing works. At least nothing that i know how to do.
My knowledge with android sistem is minimal.
The problem isn't my router, all other smartphones works fine, just my own is having this problem.
What i have tested and had negative results.:
- *#0011# and set the wifi power saving off ( something like that)
- WPS connection works, but when i go 5 steps away from my router i cant connect to anything. It appears that wifi is connected, but doesnt works.
My GS3 has nothing "special", no ROMs, kernel or mods. Its running on 4.3 Android.
I really do not understand about android. Have seen in some posts that people changed their version and the problem was solved.
Should i try to restore the GS3? Havent tryied yet.
