Galaxy S3 GTI19300 Wifi Only Works Close Range - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

GTI19300 Wifi problem
Hi folks.
I will start simply, my wifi only works when im very close to my router.
When im at certain distance, it appears an "authentication problem", that suddenly disappears if i get close enough to the router.
I already have searched for solutions, nothing works. At least nothing that i know how to do.
My knowledge with android sistem is minimal.
The problem isn't my router, all other smartphones works fine, just my own is having this problem.
What i have tested and had negative results.:
- *#0011# and set the wifi power saving off ( something like that)
- WPS connection works, but when i go 5 steps away from my router i cant connect to anything. It appears that wifi is connected, but doesnt works.
My GS3 has nothing "special", no ROMs, kernel or mods. Its running on 4.3 Android.
I really do not understand about android. Have seen in some posts that people changed their version and the problem was solved.
Should i try to restore the GS3? Havent tryied yet.

having quite a serious issue with the vibrant wifi

I have this issue with wifi. It's that when I'm at home, it won't connect at all to my wifi all I get is obtaining address and eventually unsuccesful, yet occasionally it does work. Then, when using other wifis, turning on wifi does make it connect and show the icon in the notification bar, but still, it won't always work. I try to get into the market but it says no network or something like that. Tried most web browsers, nothing works too. What can I do? My phone is rooted and flashed with bionix fusion rom, evn though this problem sometimes happened even with stock firmware, rooted and not rooted. What can I do? Can't really get a replacement because i bought it from overseas. HELP!!

Some routers are a tad dodgy, so it may not be the phone at all. Since we dont know what type of router or what sort of connection environment your in (how many wifi connections it's handling, etc...) it's hard to say. Still it's easier to replace a $30 router than it is a several hundred $$$ phone.
I said in the post itself that I tried more than one wifi aka router, most of them connected to a laptop and my phone at a certain time. Therefore I doubt the issue is the router. I think it's a bug. Is there no fix for this?
This is kind of a shot in the dark, but have you tried putting the phone in Airplane mode and then restarting the Wi-Fi? I've found that the cell data connection can sometimes interfere with my Wi-Fi.

I would put my money on the router, I have not seen anyone else complain about this who is running bionix. So a bug within bionix, I'm going to say no.
HOWEVER!!!!!! I had the same problem for a while. I have AT&T uverse and there 2WIRE router is total crap... I had the same exact problems as you PLUS it would not connect to my mac mini for more then a few seconds. I hooked up an older router I had laying around and BAM no more issues.
I got the same problem, but my phone is not rooted or flashed. Must be a system/software problem.

No really people, It's the routers you are using... not the phone...

Serious WIFI problems on stock 2.1

Hi! I'm having serious problems with the wifi on my phone in stock global 2.1. Two weeks or so ago it started to not connect (or better say not initialize) to wifi, giving "Unable to start wifi..." message. Sometimes it connected and a while after it wouldn't let me continue browsing, connecting to Market or refreshing Facebook widget, although it still being as connected.
I decided first to restore my phone to defaults, but that did not work. Then I reflashed using X10 Flash Tool, but again with the same problems. So after that I decided to flash using PC Companion (thinking that this may miraculously resolve all). Now I'm here suffering from an "unable to connect" phone.
I've taken a log using dmesg just after this problems have come up. maybe there could be an answer to this. I'f there's a better way to log this, please tell me.
Any advice?
"2.815328] Using very old AMSS modem firmware."
Is the issue just at home or out and about?
Sorry but I don´t understand what you mean. Looking at that log it seems that something goes wrong and it shuts down just after trying to init:
"<4>[ 51.871484] ar6000_readwrite_file: file /sys/devices/platform/msm_sdcc.2/detect_change filp_open error -2"
Also, you can see this more clearly from:
"<4>[ 6163.536082] Normal WIFI mode." (line 2361)

I don't understand what it means either, which is why I asked if it's just at home or out and about.
Doh! Sorry, it happens everywhere. I've tried in open and secured wifis.
Hi, this looks like the issue I have, did you had any luck fixing it?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=12882017
Hi, yesterday I managed to have wifi working for at least an hour, when it normally lasts few minutes before it freezes. It was set to "never" in the "disable wifi policy", so I went to dinner and when I was back it was disconnected. Then it was not capable of getting connection again.
I have Blade Wifi Fix installed and it seems to do something. Anyway you could try to set wifi to static ip, let it connect and wait until freezes, then set it to automatic ip and reconnect. It worked for me, at least for a while. I may try again and post a logcat.
Anyway there's another threat here (see second page) where I have some more info about the problem.
Hey any luck figuring out the problem? Im still without Wi-Fi

[Q] Galaxy SII WiFi can't be activated

Hi,
I've just gotten a Galaxy S2 and I'm not able to switch on the WiFi-adapter... I have Android 4.0.4 on it and it just tells me that tha WiFi is gonna be activated endlessly...
I've searched here in the forum and on the internet a bit and it seems that many people encountered similar problems after they've updated from an older software version to ICS... I've already tried many things people reported on those threads to get their WiFi working again like:
every kind of wipe
downgrading to a Gingerbread firmware
using cutom kernels/ROMs (AOKP-Rom, CyanogenMod, Siyah-Kernel)
many different APKs that seemed to fix the WiFi issue on some devices (like WiFix or FXR WiFi fix and rescue)
but nothing of the above mentioned approaches worked out for me...
I've also found a post of someone who managed to get it working by making "wifi:wifi" the user of /data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf and change its permissions to 0777... This didn't work out neither...
And here's the really strange thing now: I was able to connect to our home network once. All i had to do was to change the WLAN-frequqncy bandwidth (I'm not sure how it's called on an english firmware, I use a german one) in Settings/WLAN/Advanced from "Auto" to "2,4GHz" for that is what I'm using at home... After I got the WiFi working with this i restarted the phone to see if this really solved the problem, but then the WiFi was gone again and since then I'm not able to change this setting anymore because the phone doesn't save any changes I make for this option in the Advanced settings anymore. When I change this setting, leave the advanced settings section tha WiFi doesn't work and when I open advanced settings again the WLAN-frequency bandwidth is set to "Auto" again.
So I'd like to ask if anyone has an idea what else I might try to get it working or if anyone knows where the config-file is where the above mentioned settings are saved so that I could try to change this manually or if anyone encountered a similar problem and already knows the solution for it...
Btw, I don't think that this is a hardware issue because like I mentioned above I was already able to connect to the network successfully once...
thanks in advance

There are some reports of leaked acid from the internal button battery (BAT500) which ruined some surrounding components, such us some resistors causing WiFi malfunction.
Not sure if that could be your case, but it could be worth give it a try and disassembly your SGS2 just in case. If you have a damaged/leaked internal battery then you could just remove it and clean the zone with CRC. That battery just helps to store the date and time when the "big" battery is removed.
This is a link to a spanish forum where you will find some pictures of the affected battery: http://www.htcmania.com/showthread.php?t=454012
And this is a "how to disassemble SGS2" video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=65pvAINg2ME

[Fixed] WiFi Issue On Venom

I am having a peculiar issue. My Wi-Fi drops out and then reconnects every 30-45 minutes or so. I have the latest version of the ROM, flashed the boot.img in the thread, but it still doesn't fix my issue. It doesn't matter how far I am away from the signal, it just drops out temporarily, and then reconnects. I can't explain it. Other than that, it seems to be working great, but before I rooted and flashed, I never had any issues of any kind with the WiFi.
Also, it may be worth noting that I don't know for sure yet, but it may also turn on the WiFi automatically even though I have it set not to. Sometimes when I am out and about, I'll get a popup saying that WiFi networks were found nearby, do you want to connect etc...
Any help will be appreciated, I love this ROM and can't see myself going back on stock but this is a pretty cumbersome issue...
Re: WiFi Issue On Venom
Have you tried it out on other routers?
And fir the asking to join networks, there is a setting in wifi>advance for that.
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using xda app-developers app
About the only thing that I haven't tried is another router, but the other devices on the network don't seem to be having any issues. Then again, it is an Airport, so...Yeah, I won't fully know until I get a chance to test it elsewhere...
But I know about the advanced setting and have it disabled. That's why I'm wondering it its something in the ROM or something that I did wrong that it keeps trying to come come back. My guess is that it's disconnecting the mobile network and resetting it, just as it is doing on the WiFi...
Update
Just in case someone else runs into this issue, the problem was with an app that I used to change my host name. It would intermittently interrupt my connection trying to do that. I uninstalled it and edited my build.prop file the old fashioned way. The issue didn't have anything to do with Venom, just the fact that I had rooted and tried new things.
Thanks for your help!
This was the app that caused the issue: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tiranodroid.change.hostname

Can you please go to the advanced editing options and change the name of your thread and place "Fixed" in there so people can reference it, if need, and what app it was. Thanks.

[FIXED] Wifi connected but no traffic

Hi Guys,
i have a problem.
Since a couple of days, the wifi connection on my i9100 does not work anymore. I tried multiple roms but to no avail.
The thing is that the wifi connection is established, but nothing works.
I tried different roms, router resets (but the problem occurs on any wifi connection).
Any ideas?

may be its a problem with your device karnel version. try to use stoke karnel, i had this problem once. then i flashed stock karnel using odin. then solved
Thanks for the reply, i tried it and i am now running stock. BUT the problem still persists.
This could not be a hardware problem could it? since the wifi is connected?

Ive had this happen to both my my Note 2 and my SGS2 LTE before that. With the Note 2, No matter what rom/stock firmware i flashed it never got better and I ended up selling it at a loss, but the SGS2 was made better when I flashed to stock then reflashed a Cm 4.2.2 rom. Maybe try that?

Given what you've already tried, flash the 3 part firmware from Hopper8's 'Odin troubleshooting' thread stickied in the General section. If you can get WiFi working on that, then reflash a more recent stock rom. If it's still working, then reflash whatever custom rom.
Might not work, but worth a shot given the 3 part will wipe your phone & might get rid of anything funky that might be causing this (don't forget to back stuff up before you flash it).
That it happens with every WiFi network you try to use is a worry though, and probably points either to something really simple we're all missing here, or a hardware issue.

I will try that when i get back from work. But i've been thinking, how is it possible that it is a hardware issue? i mean the phone still connects, something hardware related can not be partially broke right?
You'd think not (that it wouldn't be a hardware issue), but you've tried pretty much everything you can on the soft/firmware side, and it obviously isn't something on the WiFi network side unless all the WiFi networks you've tried & failed to get data flow to/from have this problem.
One thought I did have since my last post...I can't remember whether it's possible to do this on the S2 (it is on the S3/S4) as it's been months since I've even looked at mine; if you delete a WiFi connection in settings, then when you re-add it, are you able to choose between DHCP & static for IP address (might be in advanced settings if you check the box) ? If you're able to do this, choose a static IP address (I use 192.168.1.168 on my S4) rather than DHCP & see how that goes.
If that's not possible or it doesn't work, then try flashing the 3 part. Make sure you test once you've flashed it without restoring anything or installing any apps first to rule in/out something on the app side of things causing the problem.
THe 3part Odin flash did also not work. Is there a last resort solution, or is this it. Should I accept that my phone is broken

pheraps there is a problem with your modem version. Try to flash an other modem using recovery.
isnt that what i did in the 3 step flash from hopper8?
No, it's not. There's a big difference between flashing a 3 part rom & just simply flashing a modem. However...
It won't work anyway because WiFi has nothing to do with the modem (WiFi drivers are in the kernel).
Did you try what I suggested with removing the connection in phone WiFi settings & re-adding it with a static IP (presuming this is even possible on the S2) ?
If you did & it didn't work, or it isn't possible after all, take it to a service centre or local mobile repair shop.
or just buy a new phone as i did. I will keep you posted if the static ip worked.

Holy &^#(*^ that worked! a static IP worked. How is that possible?!
The short answer ? Magic
The long/non-tech answer; the connection between the phone/router is basically dropped & constantly re-established over & over & over (we're talking about once a second or less; basically looping like that) which means you've never got a stable connection long enough to get any data flow with a DHCP allocated IP.
There's threads on here somewhere that explain it better/explain 'the why' if you're interested enough to search for them; sorry, I don't have bookmarks handy & it's 5.30am here so I'm going to bed.
Important thing is, problem solved

100% thanks, i've looked around on the forum and see now that you've helped multiple people solve this problem. That is great.
[FIX]
For the people that read this thread, fix the problem by applying a static IP for their WIFI and think "but what about all the public accespoints that do not allow static IPs?? Will i never be able to use them anymore?"
Don't worry
The problem is not so much the fact that the phone suddenly needs a static IP on certain WIFI accespoints, but that it needs an assigned DNS. Through some "magical" "unexplainable" reason some of our phones suddenly go broke in a weird way that everything works, but no DNS is assigned on specific WIFI spots (mostly WPA2 protected).
Solution:
Set a fixed DNS for all WIFI connections
Google Play has multiple apps that will apply a fixed DNS.
[edit] after this debacle i bought a second hand i9300. The first couple of days, it worked perfectly but soon it started to display similar behaviour as my i9100. That is when i started to look for other possible solutions for the problem. I soon found out that the Ip adress that was handed out by my router was off. it was 192.168.2.xxx instead of 192.168.1.xxx as is setup in my router settings. That is why entering a static IP solved the problem for my i9300. After restoring my router to factory settings everything is normal. My router is a Tp-link wr740N with DDWRT flashed on it. Maybe this information will also help other users
Good job digging up the DNS info, hopefully this helps people in future/they don't spend days pulling their hair out trying to fix this issue
