Home key not working properly - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hii friends, few months back I rooted my phone. Now m planning to change the ROM. But m very much concern about working of my homekey button. Even after pressing it, it doesn't respond though sometimes it works properly (but only sometimes). My current ROM gives me option to go into recovery by pressing restart button but I am not sure whether the same option is there in the new ROM which I am planning to install. I might have problems if it doesn't have that option coz booting into recovery might get difficult if the key doesn't work. Is there any solution for it?
And also will Samsung service center entertain me with it taking into consideration the rooted state of phone (yellow triangle still there)?

Well firstly, you can use Triangle Away to reset binary counter and remove yellow triangle, then just flash stock rom via ODIN if you want to return for warranty.
Second, There are various apps on net that can reboot your device into recovery or download modes.

My warranty period is over so that's not a problem. Will they take it with the triangle?
And thanks for information

[Q] broken phone rooted - no warranty

Hi all
I am still learning and this question crosses my mind alot. We know the fact that rooting our phone will just void the warranty. I know you will say : flash it when you are about to return for warranty and reset binary with jig.
Now, when we need to return for warranty, this mean that there is something wrong with the phone. This issues can be as simple as button not working to some complex issue.
Lets say. It is the volume button is the one that is broken.
"how are we going to flash when the button we need to flash is not working?
I really want to root my phone but the question above has made me very worried.
Have you had any experience with this kind of situationn
Thanks all

if you root it you will have cwm (clock work mode) on your phone which will allow you to put it in download mode from your touch screen.
CWM has a variety of flashing options built into, that why most people root their phones besides giving access to the firmware of the phone.
First question is why root >> You only root if you actually need root .
As posted CWM has recovery .
Warranty Custom rom voids warranty.
Rooting voids warranty .
Signs of custom rom are custom rom counter set above zero .
Return to stock for warranty is flash stock rom wipes root and reset custom rom counter to zero using USB jig .
Rooted phone and cannot carry out above then its a risk regards returning for warranty and will depend upon the nature of the fault and the service guy himself .
Thats the risk you take and i would put that as a 50/1 shot about a 2% risk of phone user having to pay for repairs .Though by not following instructions risk rises considerably .
jje
You won't need the volume keys when you use a USB jig.

Does the USB jig put the phone into download mode then? I don't have one (not going to bother unless I need to send the phone away) so don't actually know what it does other than resetting the counter .
You can also use Advanced Power Menu to restart the phone in download/recovery, I use this as it's much more convenient than turning the phone off then holding the button combo.
I haven't used the CWM app but I'm guessing that can restart in download mode too?
But I guess if the jig puts it in download mode none of this matters really since to reset the counter you will need one anyways.

Need to return phone. How to get rid of exclamation mark?

Hello,
I am exchanging my phone but right now there is a giant exclamation mark on it. I read up on several ways to get rid of it but the i read something about B2 causing it to brick your phone or put it in a bootloop. Can anybody point me in the right direction. I do have a Jig but recent posts say it is bad.

I just used this thread to clean mine up (not returning, just wanted it cleaned before I flashed it again): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=18630030&postcount=1
The jig from Mobile Tech Videos came in two days, worked perfectly.
Here's another way:
http://www.jayceooi.com/2011/08/10/...e-on-samsung-galaxy-s2-without-usb-jig-video/
I have the JIG as well. No problems using it.
To "unroot" the device and get rid of the exclamation mark, use Odin and flaah stock kernel. I did that myself and was able to restore original Galaxy S 2 splash screen (and kept root). Remember, in order to use Odin, you must first put the phone in download mode by simultaneously pressing and holding volume up and down amd power buttons. If you need more assistance, feel free to PM me. Good Luck.

I exchanged couple phone with roots. Just flashed back the stock kernel, even returned with S8 Rom. Noone really pays attention and go to download mode to look for the counter. Just make sure no "!" and has ATT boot up logo. That's all.

Galaxy Ace doesn't turn on

Ok so my problem is that i eooted my wife galaxy ice without any problem, i downloaded rom manager and download nice custom rom, so at this time i lieft phone at home and go to work. At this time i didnt know that rom manager is not suporting ace device. MY WIFE KNOW a bit about rooting because she saw me rooting all of my androud device,so while a went to work she want to suprise me and she want to instal custom rom on her own so she went to rom manager and when rom manager ask her to confirm device name ahe couldnt find ace on the list, so for some stupid reazon she choose huwei phone and she flashed cwm. After that she go to instal rom from sd and she choose cynanogen ics rom, phone go to reboot but it never turn on again, i try go to download mode but it wont go to it, i remooved battery press three magic buttons and at the same time inserting battery qbut noting pc is not recognizing device. The only way for pc to recognize my phone is when i press volume up+home+power(like recovery mode) when i do this my pc is recognizing my wife ace and odin can see it also, but when i try to flash stock rom odin stock on "setupconnection" i closed all kies backgrounds but still same. I also try jig to boot in to download mode but it wont work.

Try if you can go to download mode again or recovery mode..
if not..
simply give it to the service center and tell them it simply stopped working when i woke up one fine morning...
most of the time bricking with rom manager is unrecoverable by users, only service center can repair it. i think i saw a guy claimed he recovered his bricked-by-rom-manager ace in a thread before but couldn't remember which thread it is.
try to search for the thread.

Probably have to change the whole motherboard, it's probably better to get a new phone at this stage. Another way (don't get your hopes up) is to use JTAG, that will probably work but if you dont know anyone with the equipment the pricing will actually be more expensive than the Ace itself.
Additionally, it would be wiser to state your actual problem on the thread title.

i bricked my phone while going from 2.3.4 to 2.3.5
If your phone doesn’t boot into download mode and you have a black screen after flashing heres how you unbrick it, it worked for me .
Step 1 – Prepare odin with the firmware u want to flash (in my case was gingerbread 2.3.3) and get it ready to go;
Step 2 – Remove battery and connect your galaxy ace to the computer;
Step 3 – Hold Volume down + Power + Home button at the same time;
Step 4 – Insert the battery and wait a bit;
Step 5 – At this point Odin should have detected your SG Ace ( Yellow rectangle should appear);
Step 6 – Click Start button in Odin and wait about 5 min.
step 7- if force close issue come-- boot into recovery mode by pressing middle button+power and then releasing power button (keeping middle button still pressed) wipe data wipe cache ..
reboot
If all goes well it should come back to life.

If I'm not wrong you can bring it back using a jtag box, 25 pounds could get yourself that.
But just repair it it's easier.
I think You go to service center tell them that your phone got switched off when You were talking on the phone and then it never started again and always act like Noobs in front of them.....
I hope you have warranty for your ace

I got the solution : For bricked ice........ Take an
Icepick.... .. Sorry, but this pass was too good....
I have come across such a situation and successfully have brought back my ace to life. (Disclaimer: I am not saying these are the steps to recover any bricked device, but this is a method i followed once when i bricked my device by following a wrong flashing method)
Just remove the battery and try to switch on normally without pressing any combination. It would not do anything but would drain remains completely.
Then do not put the battery back for a while (in my case i kept it for 5 mins)
Then again follow the same procedure without battery, just press the power button for 10 secs without pressing any other keys and see what happens. It should remain blank.
After that, try to connect the USB cable and then press power + v down + center key and see if it goes to download mode. If not, then put in the battery without removing the cable, then see if it automatically switches on to emergency recovery mode (It should).
Next when u see the emergency recovery screen, now try going to download mode by using the combination (power + vdown + center)
Please let me know if this works. ( I hope this should work)
service center
buy "USB Jig" so the phone will start in download mode and you can easily flash it with odin.
http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_trksid=p5197.m570.l1313&_nkw=usb+jig&_sacat=0
Here's the solution:
Step 1: Buy a baseball bat
Step 2: Get home
Step 3: Beat up yo wench with the bat and scream "You dumb *****! Make me a sandwich".

I've done same what your wife do before.. so i tried every thing but still cant unbrick..
Just send to servis centre if you still have warranty..
I tell them i was on fb but it( ace) goes off..
If u doesnt have warranty anymore just go to phone shop tell them to change your ace board..
Just click thanks if i help u..
I just want to help.. :banghead:

Reset gone wrong

I picked up a used i777 that was posted not to power on.replaced battery.it powered on.the phone is pretty beat up but it worked.problem was it had lock screen.so I wiped and reset.now it boots then immediately shuts down.does this in recovery also.can't get into download mode to reflash.
Phone appears to have kk6 is.couldn't unlock to check.any ideas on how to proceed or to look would be appreciated.
This still sounds to me like a battery issue (either bad battery, incorrect battery type, or insufficiently charged), if it is constantly rebooting even in download or recovery mode.
You have posted a question about AOCP's dialer. Have you gotten past this rebooting issue?

Dailer for my every day phone.
Boot problem is on a phone I bought to repair.
The battery came out of a working i777 that had cm7/cm10/aocp kitkat. It worked fine on all ROMs flashed. And it was fully charged.
The phone boots fully into os or recovery. Then shuts down. Not boot
looping startup screen.

Could this problem be brick bug?phone had lock screen before I wiped/reset.not sure what ROM.it was stock from what I could see.
won't boot into download mode.will boot into os and recovery but shuts down then goes into bootloop.
any way around this problem?may change out motherboard.
any comments or threads to check would be a help.thnx

If you haven't seen it, here is the list of ways to get into download mode:
1. With the phone off and connected to the computer via USB cable, and battery installed, hold all three buttons, vol- vol+ pwr.
2. With the phone off and battery installed, hold vol- and vol+ (but not pwr) while plugging in the USB cable.
3. With the phone off and battery installed, hold vol- (but not vol+ or pwr) while plugging in the USB cable.
4. Attempt each of the above three options with the battery removed from the phone. The computer will supply the power to the phone.
5. Use Android Debug Bridge (adb) which will only work if USB debugging has been already turned on in Developer Options, since you can't boot into the system to turn it on. With the battery installed and the phone connected to the pc via USB cable, use the command "adb reboot download".
6. Use a USB jig. With the battery installed insert the USB jig into the USB connector of the phone. Some have reported that this method works when no other method would work.
It's strange that you can boot into recovery and not into download, so try all of these to see if you can get download mode some way.
I suppose it is possible that there is eMMC memory damage, but it would have to be only a very small segment of the memory for your symptoms. I'd be inclined to think the problem is not damaged memory, but I don't remember seeing those exact symptoms.

Thnx for reply.I've tried all of the button methods.the jig I have has worked on several captivates and 4 other i777.but no luck with this phone.I tried it on my Dailey phone and it goes to download.so jig is good.I haven't done adb yet.will try that next.if that doesn't work,I have a parts phone that still has a motherboard.just hate not to be able to figure out problem.thnx again
Good news.as I stated in original post, this is a used phone I bought to repair.it had a cracked screen and was a little beat up.so I replaced screen and changed charge port.the bootloop continues but it will now go into download.at least now I can reflash and finish rehab.not sure which part allowed me to get to download mode,I would assume it was charge port.just goes to show that it isn't always 1 big issue.could be several smaller ones.thnx again

OK.I've changed screen,charge port.got it into DL mode.flashed "back to stock w/root.

A bad power button can cause continuous or spontaneous rebooting while using the stock firmware. I don't know of a method to check that, without simply replacing the switch.
Is that switch replaceable or is it more feasible to replace motherboard?I can't tell if its soldered or plug in.
Can u direct me to a thread or website to find out more.thnx

It is not replaceable without purchasing expensive specialized hot air soldering equipment. I use a professional Hakko soldering station and I would not attempt it. The button, which is relatively small, must be de-soldered and replaced. It is so small that it does not even have leads, just soldering pads. You can watch a Youtube video of a technician replacing the power button on a T-Mobile S2.
A failed power button will not function at all. The most normal symptom is that the phone will spontaneously boot up when the battery is inserted. But as Cyril says, a failing power button can cause other symptoms.
Thnx to both of u for replies.
OK,where I'm at now.I used odin3 kk6 w/root.it worked!no more loop.I had used odin3 uch7 w/root.I've used that countless times with no trouble.don't know what happened this time.
I Odin dd kernel for recovery.flashed cm 7.2,then cm 10.1(upgrade recovery).i now have AOCP 7.2 kk.everything seems stable.I also did the superuser update before kk flash.
The only glitch there is that the dreaded yellow triangle(1900 ROM) is now there.it showed up after first flash with uch7(odin3).didn't go away after kk6(odin3).thought it would go away going back to stock?

To get rid of the triangle, you'll need to return to stock, then use the correct root/kernel method to avoid tripping the custom-binary monitor.
I suggest the latest stock distribution ( i777UCMD8 ) which can be found in the download repository (see creepyncrawly's sig).
Summary of the process:
Create a nandroid of your desired setup
Install stock android Firmware (via desktop Odin)
Install and use Framaroot (for root access)
Install mobile odin (and the i777 flash kernel)
Install custom kernel (via mobile Odin)
Restore nandroid (via custom kernel)
This process has been further detailed in another thread...

Flashing the stock kernel (any version, Gingerbread to Jelly Bean,) will remove the yellow triangle boot screen. But flashing the stock kernel will not reset the flash counter. Using the jig will also not reset the flash counter. To reset the flash counter, you must use the Triangle Away application by Chainfire. I think that it only works when you have Ice Cream Sandwich installed on the phone, and you may need to use an earlier version. But does it really matter? It doesn't seem worth the trouble to me, since the phone is long out of warranty.
I will be selling phone after I'm finished repairing. That is why ID like to get triangle gone.
I flashed older version of bootloader and that seemed to work.It allowed jig to work.

Unsure whether Soft or Hard bricked. Help!

Hi, really in the need for some help and advice. I recently tried to update from cyanogenmod 10.2 to 11 however on flashing a message came up saying I had to repair my recovery. After clicking yes it got stuck into a recovery loop. So I tried flashing a new recovery using Odin since I couldn't transfer anything. However that seemed to have made it worse, Its now stuck on the S3 logo screen. Been through a couple attempts to repair however everytime I attempt to flash it just gets stuck, leaving it for half an hour to an hour i remove it. I'm pretty lost for what to do, can anyone help?
Also, to add more problems my power button sticks. I dont know if thats whats haulting the flashing?
Thanks!

But fix your power button first, interrupted flash can result in hard brick.
I cant use this fix, I cant access my phone to put anything on the SD and it seems like I am unable to flash anything with Odin. I'll try and break it down to fix the sticky power button but I'm clueless to what to try now?
This problem is most probably caused by the power button being stuck thus restarting your phone. Follow wat boomboomer said and fix your power button and see if it solves the problem.

No, there is no other way. Fix the boot loop first by flashing a full stock room in Odin. Factory reset afterward in recovery.
