Credit for instructions goes to jonno95, without him I wouldnt have become inspired enough to make this!
Instructions:
1. On your phone using a root explorer navigate to /system/customize/resource and rename the original downanimation.zip (just in case you want to easily go back to it)
2. Copy the new downanimation.zip to your phone then using root explorer copy it to /system/customize/resource and make sure the permissions are like the original. rw r-- r-- I believe.
(alternate step 2) (pointed out by stillthisguy) If you have ViperDNA by nit then you can go into Venom Tweaks>Advanced>Custom downanimation. It will find all of your .zip files and you just choose the one you want to use.
The first request is done and attached. (be sure and rename to downanimation.zip or hTC_downanimation.zip, et cetera)
Goodies:

Quote from this thread about enhancing shutdown animation's framerate:
Find /system/customize/CID/default.xml and edit it with es file manager, near the bottom you'll see:
<ShutdownAnimation image_png="/system/customize/resource/hTC_downanimation.zip" image="" fps="30" />
Now you just change the number next to the fps to whatever frame rate per second you want, and you can designate what zip name it uses, mine is hTC_downanimation.zip.
Exit, Saving changes, and hold-click or w/e to open the options submenu over the file default.xml, and change its permissions to rw r-- r--
Profit!
I take requests. I have a version where the HTC logo fades in to picture too if someone wants that as well.
That's super cool! thanks!
Very nice!
Looks sweet!

What is CRT?
Re: [ANIMATION] HTC quietly brilliant Green Pyre edition downanimation.zip and gif
Cathode Ray Tube. It's an animation that supposed to look like an old TV. Most Motorola Droids have it when you turn off the screen. I miss it, it's too bad we can't hack framework-res.apk on sense to get that effect.

From the thunderbolt days. Someone modified it for the rez also. Basically it looks like a crt screen of white noise or snow and fades in to a white dot in the center of the screen and goes black full screen. Like the old cathode ray tube television and monitors used to when you turned them off. (Showing my age a little here). Lol.
Someone even modified it for screen off transition for the tbolt on some roms from another site.

Re: [ANIMATION] HTC quietly brilliant Green Pyre edition downanimation.zip and gif
I can't get this to work for some reason. Ive put the file in system/customize/resource and fixed permissions to rw,r,r and its just black. I've renamed the original to .bak and I've even moved it to the sd card so the custom one is the only one in the resource folder. Ive put the original one back and it works fine just can't get the custom one to work

I had to rename mine to hTC_downanimation.zip and then give it rw r-- r-- permissions.
I used ES File explorer or w/e its called, and it seems buggy. In order for it to just copy the new animation, I had to enable root access and mount system as writable as well, and then create a new folder in the resources folder, when I went to copy it, I went to copy it inside the new folder, and it would copy it then into the system directory, took a lil bit.

Take the bootanimation.zip and copy/move it to your /system/media folder. Make sure you change the r/w to ro (top right if using root explorer) not sure with file mananger, this suould be the way if you have cm6 - cm7 rom.

The frames are in portrait orientation so they are really scrunched up. Someone on the Vibrant forums made a landscape mode that looks awesome, but it doesn't work right because for some reason there is a white frame that flashes everytime the animation loops.
Here is the Vibrant thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=968410
The landscape version is on the bottom of the page. If someone here could fix the looping issue, that would be awesome since I can't figure it out. I even posted a video of it on the 2nd page.

I never said it looked better with the white flashing. The landscape one looks better because the animation fits the screen better, but the landscape one has the white flashing, which is a bad thing.

Well, with the Evo 3D comes root, and with root comes S-Off, and with that comes custom roms and themes. So here is pushboot for the Evo 3d.
What it does: easily changes your boot animation and powerdown animation through windows.
Remember to start you need:
-HTC Drivers installed
-A working bootanimation.zip and/or power down animation
-Your phone plugged in to the usb port (lol)
-Only ONE .zip in each folder (clearly labeled.)
Other than that, I included everything needed to make this work.
Any issues let me know and I can try to help you out!
And leave feedback and if you like this, press the thanks button on this post =D
As things change, I will update the best I can.
8/1/11 updateV1.0 released
added option to send to /data/local
added option to send to /system/media
added some other small changes inside the .bat
Nice job. Will be trying it soon
All out of thanks today, as soon as I get some back you will be getting a nice cool crisp one!

Doesnt matter what its called with pushboot. you can put it in the folder and call the zip makeitfail.zip and it will work.
Pushboot changed the zip's name to what it needs to be.
Not all bootanimations are put together right, and that will result in a black screen.
Thank you for this...... it will be a time saver.

I did this because I like to have it open when flashing roms. Really easy to send to recovery, and as soon as the new rom is flashed change your boot animation right away. I originally made it for myself to make things go faster =P

@OP: Nice!
@all:
This may help some others new to the bootanimation game and answer a question for me so I dont have to try it myself to see:
Do you have to manually set permissions on your custom Sprint_bootanimation.zip for it to work right? I do set mine but not sure if it'll work fine with defaults.
I just copy mine over the original (i know ill never use it again but i backup everyting) and set the permissions to what the factory had which was owner r/w group r other r. I never had any problems with that method.
I havent tried the data/local + default.xml way yet but when i have time to add sound to mine i'm sure i'll have to modify to point to the audio.
Another post back a guy mentioned he had a boot animation working using data/local folder but didnt mention a default xml mod...is this possible or did he just not mention the xml edit? I'm happy with the way i'm doing it...just like to know my options and potentially help someone who may read this not knowing.
