[Q] Why choose ICS over GB? - Sony Ericsson Xperia Mini, Mini Pro, Xperia Pro, A

I'm not looking for any arguements but I'm just interested in why people are choosing ICS ROMS over Gingerbread?
I've tried various iterations of ICS and I find the performance so slow compared to GB, I actually "upgraded" for a couple of months but just decided to try a GB ROM for ****s and giggles and I don't know how I put up with ICS. Not matter how many scripts or tweaks are used it's not even in the same league as GB.
What do you use and why?

No need to make such thread, especially in general.
Reported. Moderators might close it soon.
Best Regards,
AJ

I'd say it is, when I first flashed ICS to my Arc I was actually quite surprised by how smooth it was, and after a few build.prop and init.d tweaks it was/is easily on par with CM9 (not tried CM10 yet), and it's the same on my Ray which is one of the reasons I went back to the stock ROM.
If your Phone is used as mainly, a Phone, ICS is perfect imo, the main reason I can gather some People want to use GB which looks and feels old, is for gaming, which isn't most Peoples priority.

Any desire for a choice of stock?

I have lots of my old unreleased roms stored up and am curious if you guys would like them.
These are the 2.2.1 i9000 releases, with signal fixes and home key haptic feedback.
The ones I haven't done I can get done in about a half hour. In fact, to get back in the swing of things, I have been redeodexing, fixing signal reboot and adding haptic to them one at a time - very helpful as a learning experience for me as my "Chemo Brain" sucked tons of knowledge away and I have to relearn a lot of it.
Anyway, do you guys have any interest in these or any of my unreleased past roms? I don't want to start a new thread if there is no demand for it.
Let me know!
Absolutely!!

Welcome back jellette. I hope your doing allot better. Sounds like you are. Its good to see you back in the game.
And if anyone its wondering, Jellette made some bad ass roms. If you haven't tried his work I highly recommend it.

Are they all pretty much the same? 2.2.1 based, differently themed etc. I honestly don't know how much you can change in like 8 ROMS on the same firmware.
If they are, I would just say Make one ROM thats the most stable; and then put the others as themes possibly for that one ROM?
I think you should also move along to ICS as the other devs have done, possibly join one of the devs and work with them rather than creating the same ROM, like there are right now about 8 AOKP Roms, which run the same, have a different kernel.
I'm interested in stock style 2.2 roms. Now that megauploads is gone most of the links in here are dead and we're stuck with ICS roms aren't 100% working or 2.2 roms that are so tweaked they're unreliable at best.

I did and had either problems with bluetooth, gps, mute/unmute, mic problems (which killed my bt headset), or all of them at the same time. They were all pretty bad. I need a phone that 100% works and ICS hasn't offered that yet. When it does I might switch but right now I'm content on near stock 2.2. All out speed isn't worth reliably IMO.
Jellete, i'm interested. I still have your BOJS5 rom on my sdcard. I'm sure people will love your new rom. Thanks

[MINIPRO] Looking for: Light and Stable ROM/Kernel

Hi,
I'm really sorry for starting a topic like this, but this forum/subsection is really so cluttered...
I'm just looking for a stable, light, snappy ROM. A ROM which has proven it's worth. As little bugs as possible, no experimental features!
And also a kernel which fits best.
I would like like all hardware functions of my phone to keep working though:
Camera/Video, hardware keyboard/lights, vibrate, tactile feedback, etc...
Grtz!
No probs brov........
For ROM:-
NeroDroid Universal ROM- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1458963
For Kernel:-

You will get a bunch of different answers as each rom runs differently depending on set up and apps. To be honest looking for a rom in a development forum and you will always find things to be experimental. XDA is not about finding stable bug free roms. It is about learning and development.

I don't entirely agree. My previous phone was a HTC Desire, there were a lot of experimental ROMs, but also a lot of stable running ROMs.
I agree that most ROMs will always be a little experimental. But there's experimental and experimental ... If you know what I mean
What I'm trying to say is, I would like to have a ROM which is made by someone who really knows what he's doing and not just some barely tested ROM which will crash every 5 seconds
As for me, i havent try another ROM on my phone cos most has Bug.... have been using NeroDroid ROM since i bought my phone & i havent for once regret dat!!! i keep praying for tha Developer every blessed day for making a wonderful ROM!

I understand that but really this is development forum for developers to try out things that may cause issues or even brick a device if you don't understand exactly what your doing. This always has been and always will be the case. Just be happy that the devs even offer fixes unlike a few years ago when it was up to the users to dug in and fix issues they come across. Flashing custom roms should never be taken with a grain of salt or done cause people think it is cool or fun. We all should be hear to learn. If your not learning something when flashing then it really is a waste if time.

I have some knowledge about the proces of flashing roms/customizing phones. I just had more for my previous phone. Everything is a little new for the minipro.
That's also the reason I'm looking for a lite ROM, less potential problems to encounter
if u want really a light rom u could try pro-x rom, it is not posted here in xda, but if u type it on google u could find it on that guy website
nice, will check that one out also
In my opinion if you want a light & stable ROM you should stick with stock ROM. Thats what I have done. I just removed all the bloatware and unnecessary crap that I will never use, it has the best battery life and you don't really have to worry about it crashing. Also, I used Rage Kernel as it provides amazing battery life. To make my life easier I installed extra MODs that are essential. Just look at my signature for all the stuff I have installed.

You're right, but I would like to go one step further, I would also (maybe) like to get rid of the Sony apps. Like the Sony launcher, text-app, ... and start using the android default apps.
Is this also possible to remove those system apps from the stock rom?

Yeah, if you are rooted you can do anything you want! That's what I have done, I removed most Sony stock apps and replaced them with the 1s CyanogenMod supplies (which is stock). Some apps I kept the same due to they look nicer!
To be exact, the only thing I changed was the Phone, Contacts & Messaging apps. Everything else I kept the same

Thanks for the lead. The PRO-X [ROM] is working great in my Mini Pro (SK17i)
BTW, it is now posted on this forum - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1639720
I tried three different ROMs in the last one week before settling on this one.
Cyanogenmod 7.1.02 - Didn't work, faced the boot loop problem.
MIUIv4 2.4.6 - Nice UI, but phone felt sluggish and video play was jerky.
4.0.2.A.0.69 Generic (PreRooted) with 66 Baseband - Camera flash was not working.
But finally, PRO-X gives me everything I want - a light, snappy rom with fully functional hardware and no bugs (so far). Had it for two days now.
==> Rage Kernel v2.8 + Baseband 64 + PRO-X v2.2 ROM
Cheers.

[Q] dividing ICS and GB roms in forum?

Hello all.
im having a small question or comment.
I was just thinking if it isnt easyer to split the android development forum into GB roms and ICS roms.
why i figured this?
well since i am using GB roms untill they make ics better than what it is right now.
i am always searching for the GB roms in the forum.
often its hard to see what type of rom it will be. since not all devs write in the title what rom it is.
its just an idear to make searching for the perfect rom somewhat easyer.
thats the only comment i can think of making here so lol.
that must show how good this forum allready is

You are about
noob number fifty with exact same post .
Answer is NO . Two reasons one GB roms will start to die off now and the other reason if you cannot work out what's what then you should not be flashing roms .
Even a brief check of the roms posted and its hard not to see all the ICS in the rom header .
jje
I am also on GB.
I find no difficulty at all in navigating between GB and ICS posts, and have no idea what your problem might be, except sheer laziness. Read.
This is a forum for the SGS2 - a phone.
It is not a software forum.
No need to use gb roms bcause ics is stable right now just try some of ics based roms

this forum doesnt need any more messing about with. If anything it needs tidying up. WHy we have original, android and android i9100G ill never know.
If it needs changing we should get rid of those and it should just be
Roms
Kernels
Themes
Seriously?
Just instantly calling me a noob Just for asking a question?
Yeah i agree that most of them have ics or gb in the header.
I was Just contributing to make it easyer to navigate True the roms. Since around 10-20 % does not have gb or ics in header.
And its surtainly not because i am lazy. Its Just more easy to search for a rom.
But hey its Just a comment from me. A simple no + reason is good enough for me. No need for calling someone a noob and saying hè should not flash etc.
And btw.
Gb dying off? 63% of Android users still use gb.
As gb is still superiour over ics in stability speed battery easyness etc. There are so many People Who dont wanna switch to ics.
And for comment on why i should use ics.
I use gb simply cause its still far more stable and far more battery friendly.
On the Day that ics Will give me more bat then gb and has all the bugs out of it. i Will switch to ics.
Peace.

Seems like you havent tried out ICS for a while then. I havent had single force close or problem with any ICS roms here. If I had a problem, it had to do with the app not being optimized for ICS instead of the rom. I havent seen any wide spread problem with ICS roms.
More battery? underclock and undervolt and I get around 2-3 days with moderate usage. I dont get any more even when I was on GB.
This is not the general android section of xda, but the i9100 section. If you havent checked, most i9100 have gotten ICS making the percentage you provided rather useless.
Rather than make yet *another* thread about this, why not ask moderators if they're keen to do what you've asked ? Hint: they're not. The question has been asked a couple of dozen times over the past 6 mths, the answer has always been a well reasoned no.

Yup.
I have lately
I do flash alot on my Phones.
And i even test ics next to gb (2 Samsung galaxy s2 Phones here)
Last week i tried 8 ics roms.
But direct compared to gb roms they lag.
The schroling speed of gb is much faster.
The time it takes to start up a game is in gb much faster.
Ive had both of ics and gb jnderclocked in almost same setting for as far as possible. And ics is Just draining!
Ofcourse dif roms give dif results.
But none of the ics is as stable or quick or battery friendly as my gb rom now.

Ok guys, as has been mentioned, the Administrators have been presented with this idea a while back and they have not acted on it. So, at this point, probably not going to happen, especially with GB on its way out.

even more... i am sorry, but this thread will accomplish nothing but bickering (not yet) or useless comments (oh yeah, got those already). As it is, with so many roms, with enough time, you will get a sample of everyone using everything.
The best suggestion, is to read about the roms that interest you, and ask questions specific to that rom.

CM9 kernel vs Siyah Kernels

Before to make this a debate. I must say that this is all my personal opinions.
I wish you all to know that I have probably flashed all kinds of roms, SEEKING to find some kind of PERFECT rom, but you all know that we as humans will never get and accept something that is perfect, as perfect. (just love be4 she dumps you xD)
So continuing with this thread, I wish to share my experiences with you ALL <3 and hopefully answer all of your questions.
Stock CM9 KERNEL/ROM
Pros: The best one i have tried with almost never changing Battery life, I love it and always return to this bad guy after a bunch of roms with bad battery life. You must get this!
Cons: Little to none customization when it comes to governors.
Siyah x
Pros: considered as the best kernel for almost 78% of the XDA(not really, hehe), they like this because of the multiple governors and for being one of the best kernels with cero problems, always updating. Apart from it, it also supports 2nd rom in recovery, so its perfect.
Cons: as all other kernels, in order to get best battery life, you need to tweak them, change voltages, and it takes time, without changing anything from this kernel, the battery life goes to 90% from 100% with only 4 minutes.
Other kernels
Pros: you get to try new kernels...Woohooo!!!
Cons:just not as good as siyah kernels without customizing them.
So I hope you find this as a little entertainment for both, me and you, with love, bye!....
Seriously, what's the meaning of this thread?
How about a new comparison?
This thread VS this comment
This thread
PROS -
•Something to pass my time
•Keeps a mod busy when they come along and close it
CONS -
•Threads of this kind aren't allowed on XDA because a simple debate can easily get out of hand
•It's a pointless thread and wastes peoples time
This comment
PROS -
•It passes time
•It's kinda funny
•Makes me seem like an arse
CONS -
•None
