Aosp or N4? - AT&T LG Optimus G

So, will our AOSP be based off the Nexus 4 conversion? Or will there actually be a AOSP ROM specifically to this device? I know patience is key, just didn't want to rely on a hack to get aosp. I bought a LGOG instead of a Nexus 4 for a reason. I tried the hack with no booting luck.
Will there be a NATIVE AOSP ROM? Or will it all be based off the nexus 4 conversion?
I really that having to do the conversion just for a aosp. I don't plan on finding a native aosp ROM tomorrow. But will it happen without the need to rely on a n4 conversion?
Thanks in advance. (;

From what I've read, it will happen without the need for a conversion.

I hope so. I really don't like relying on the conversion. Just not for me. Thank you for your information.

ASOP for the LGOG should be coming in the near future from what some of the devs have been hinting at. Like, the next couple of weeks near future. Also the ability to run N4 ROMs without converting. Good stuff is right around the corner.

He means that if you brick and whatnot, most of the devs won't be willing to help because they didn't support the release of it. It's basically a super disclaimer.

I did the conversion within the first few days of having the device. It's been working wonderfully. As long as you're not a complete newbie to Android modding/hacking/what-ever-you-call-it, and have a reliable computer and electricity (so it doesn't disconnect/turn off while flashing) you should be fine. However, the long term effects of the conversion are not yet known, but I doubt they could be that bad (if they even exist at all). I'd go for it. :good:

Like I said, I'm pretty tempted especially now that they've gotten the 16GB working. Thing is, I'm still pretty new to this (even though I've probably flashed everything else in the development forum at this point) and I'm not in a place to afford a brand new phone off contract if something happens to go wrong and I end up bricking.
Especially if the ability to run N4 ROMs without converting is just around the corner, my gut instinct is telling me to just be patient...

Its coming out but its hard to tell when. The nexus 4 conversion easy and available. You can brick your phone( if it gets disconnected from your computer during the flash or something similar happens) but no one has reported any bricks yet. DO IT NOW!!!!!!!

When i tried it hung on the boot animation. I flashed twrp to maybe flash a ROM but it would always say ENTER PASSWORD upon entering recovery. EVERY TIME. I even flashed a different recovery and everything. I tried to fast boot -w but never wiped anything. And if I tried to factory data reset in recovery I couldn't because it would always say FAILED since I couldn't enter a weird password when I first booted into recovery. Any ideas?

For me, I didn't even bother with unlocking, etc, I just went directly from stock to the N4 conversion. It didn't boot at first but I got into fastboot from the bootloader and entered fastboot -w, rebooted, and it started up perfectly. It was really simple and painless, at least it was for me. :victory:

I followed the instructions to the T. After it got to the boot animation it hung for 30+ minutes. That's when i flashed recovery and tried to flash a ROM. Yet the recovery was asking for a weird password. Like my phone was encrypted or something.
So I just flashed back. Weird thing is. My stock at& boot loader menu is EXACTLY like the nexus 4. Says mako and everything. Just doesn't have the picture of the android guy laying down.

Roms...?

I know the note is very new and I see there are 2 roms out there already! I'm new to att. Coming from sprint and evo..my question is how much dev support will this have? I've never heard of Odin will I have to use it instead of a custom recovery? Will I be able to just root and use cwm or twrp to flash roms themes etc..? I have 30 days to test phone. While I do love it I worry about dev support. Thinking if we will get aosp or miui love? Anyone have any inside news?

Off the cuff? I'd say a bit note than the average Samsung phone, seeing as how it's so awesome. Might take a bit though, Sammy isn't as nice as HTC when it comes to unlocking bootloaders.

Actually Samsung doesn't lock their bootloaders. HTC or Verizon does. And yes you will be able to use CWM to flash. There is also been talk that AOKP group is building us a ROM.

SG2 with boot to gecko...No android on it!

What the Devs say about this? Do it have a chance to be better than Android?
"This year’s CTIA Wireless conference in New Orleans is surprisingly short on major new smartphones. But at last night’s MobileFocus press event, I happened across a fascinating, one-of-a-kind handset which I hadn’t seen in person yet: Mozilla’s alpha version of a phone running Boot to Gecko, its project to turn the web technologies behind Firefox into a stand-alone mobile operating system."

Honestly I don't have any details about that OS.
Thats a pre Alpha...
For sure another "player" to this market will be a good thing. More updates, more releases, more everything.
Funny thing on that picture is that it is an International sg2 but there is an AT&T logo there. Check the pic.
That's most likely the carrier its being used with, which is perfectly normal considering the tech site is probably located in the US.
I think its a neat different Idea... Do I think it will go anywhere like android and ios? Not really (would be cool if it did).

There is a flashable zip somewhere in the original thread in the i9100 forums. I'm using it, I just don't get to use it because I have to build something which I can't do...
i777 with B2G
Boot2Gecko uses a different kernel from Android, still Linux, but with many different things compiled into it. If you go to the page with the i9100 image, you'll see a .tar.md5 image, which is really just a TAR image with some extra. You can untar it and get out the boot.img, which is the kernel. You can then use ODIN to flash the image, and if it is inoperable you can use Heimdall to flash the boot.img directly as the kernel. I stopped quickly with this because my i777 only partially worked with no radio on the last try, and it became unusable quickly. It was also getting extremely hot near the top of the unit, so I went and flashed back the AOKP image I had been using previously.
My attempts to build from scratch have been unpleasant to say the least, and it seems the Nexus is on the list of hardware along with the i9100, but the i777 and i9100g and others are not on the roadmap yet.
For those who want to know what this is, it's a Linux kernel that boots into a special version of Firefox, and then uses web documents and web standards to do everything. All of the OS is coded in HTML5/JS/CSS and has new JS implemented for controlling and using the phone's hardware. The "apps" are websites that are accessed remotely and then cached so that they do not have to be updated until the remote version changes, so the OS can upgrade extremely rapidly.
I'm looking forward to seeing this remove some of the mess made by the manufacturers and providers, and to see some much needed user control brought back into the system.
Big question since i'm brazillian, WHY BRAZIL?

I also think a good thorough guide would be a good idea. Just have it include what you need to get first, what to do, what fixes to flash after, and a list of common problems/solutions and such. This would definitely save a lot of people a lot of searching, and save a lot of people from answering the same questions over and over...

The DNA is an awesome phone; however, if your phone comes with the newest update from HTC on it, be aware, there is currently software-based (free) method to unlock bootloader or modify the phone at all. Users with updated phones that were not previously unlocked have had to resort to JTAG service (something like $45 plus shipping) to have the phone S-OFF'ed (Radio S-OFF - Means you can flash whatever you please (even more so with the engineering bootloader flashed)).
If the phone prompts you for an update, DON'T DO IT! If the phone is already updated, you either wait and hope for someone to find a vulnerability, pay for JTAG service, or use the phone stock (still a good phone, but no root).
Good luck!

Root/Bootloader status:
firmware 1.x - fully blown open
firmware 2.x - locked tighter that a dolphin's butthole.
It will probably come with the 2.x software. I would recommend using the JTAG service provided here:
http://mobiletechvideos.mybigcommerce.com/htc-droid-dna-dlx-jtag-s-off-modification-service/
Difference between a nexus and the dna... A world.
The gnex was made to open from the beginning. Running one fastboot command opened the entire floodgate, plus odin is an awesome tool for samsung devices. HTC devices have more parts that need to be cracked to have the same openess as the nexus. Right now 2.x firmware means you are running stock only (no root or anything). I'm coming from the gnex and was willing to pay for the jtag service because although I love the dev's work on this phone, I don't want to rely on them for everything.
Hope this helps.
Alright now what about things like supercid or HTC dev. Also if we can unlock the boot loader then why is s-off important. Or can we not unlock the boot loader on 2.xx

You said what most of us think when we ponder a purchase that has to be approved by the gatekeeper/wife.
haha no comments on the women stuff i think you understand why hahaha
Like other post, i would say know that you will not have root for a bit and cm 10.1 is not done yet...but will be soon. You can go for JTAG or stick with stock or use nova launcher temporarily. The battery life is pretty decent but nothing crazy 4 hours of screen time-ish on stock. i usually get enough battery for 1 day and a few hours. Oh, fastboot will prevent a full restart of your phone so might want to disable that...and yea just look around settings. there are ways to increase battery and stuff. for example, there is a settings in wifi that allows it to auto turn off and use data unless you start using your phone. I think its a great device even through its a bit big for my taste, and i don't like stock much. Hope you enjoy your phone! I can't wait to get root and cm 10.1 on my phone. ^_^

I think its a great device even through its a bit big for my taste, and i don't like stock much. Hope you enjoy your phone! I can't wait to get root and cm 10.1 on my phone. ^_^

I don't know what it is with me but I'm honestly tired of using CM and AOSP for awhile. I've been enjoying Viper so that I can still get a breath of fresh air from Sense... even though most don't appreciate Sense. Honestly wish I could put a Sense variant on my N7 too just to change it up.

BAD DOG! *rubs your nose in it*
Yeah I know what you vanilla gets bland for awhile. I can't get past two hours screen time on my nexus. And that's with the extended battery. At least sense is adding sprinkles and chocolate syrup to vanilla. Anyways what about face palm or whatever. Anyway my device will be here Monday thinks for the info I've only had Motorola and Samsung phones so HTC is a breath of fresh air

Same here. I love CM and AOSP/AOKP, but I tire of them pretty quick. I honestly don't understand the HTC Sense hate some people have. If it was that bad then everyone wouldn't be trying to find widgets that looked like the sense widgets on CM/AOSP. Sense is a really nice looking UI and their widgets are second to none.
I'm pretty much decided on sending out my DNA to be JTAG'd. How long can I expect to be without a phone? I think i'll be stuck using my rezound with just google voice.

Note 2 newb just unlocked

Hi guys, I am very new to the Note 2. I just unlocked and rooted the latest ota using Casual. Thanks to Adam Outler and everyone else involved. So my question is which ROMs are compatible with this ota? Basic question I'm sure. I came from the Razr and the kernel had to match so I assume its the same here? Anyone willing to shed some light on this for me would be greatly appreciated.

Any rom you want as long as it is in the VZW Note 2 threads can be flashed ours arent locked down by what update we are on because our bootloader is unlocked where it isnt on Moto phones. AOSP roms require AOSP kernels as TW roms require TW kernels. The roms come with kernels though so that isnt something tk worry about unless you I want to.
The only thing to remember is if you go to a 4.2 rom and want t I go back to 4.1 you have to flash a downgrade zip so your SD card doesnt become corrupted. You can find the downgrade zip in the Official CM 10.1 thread in the OP.
Check out Droidstyles guide in Android Development, its a sticky, it explains quite a bit and would ne helpful to you I think.

Thanks for the info. Exactly the answers and info I was looking for. I just flashed CleanROM and went through the flashing process. When it got to the end and said finish to reboot it just turned off and wouldnt turn back on. Couldn't get to recovery or download mode. I had to pull the battery and then turn it on. It went straight to the new ROM though without a hitch. Is that a normal part of the flashing procedure on the N2? The battery pull I mean, or did I miss something?

Thats not a normal thing to happen, but it does happen occasionally. As long as it boots up after the battery pull I wouldnt be too worried by it. I have had it happen to me before and after the battery pull I experienced no issues whatsoever.

CleanROM's good. It was the first ROM I flashed when I got my Note II too.
Eventually though, you may want to switch to something more feature-rich like Jelly Beans, which is what I'm rocking now. The features it adds are pretty awesome and you get full touchwiz functionality (S-Pen and the like) with the look of AOSP.
DL'ing Jelly Beans now. Gotta make a new TiBu before flashing though. Will give it a go shortly. My wife fusses at me sometimes cause on my old phone (Razr) and on this one I am always flashing different ROMs. She especially hates it when she calls and my phone goes directly to voicemail cause I am in recovery flashing a ROM or kernel.

Hi all, I'm feeling like a n00b on the Note too, and really appreciate the help all of you seem to be willing to share with each other. I'm not new to modding phones, recently I've been through an S3, DNA, RAZR HD and M, and even another Note 2. I made the mistake of swapping the Note 2 for an iPhone 5, and regretted it about thirty seconds later. Now that's my wife's phone, and due to the grace of another (local) xda member, I'm back rockin' the Note 2. This time around in looking forward to getting into some serious flashing and tweaking to get the most from the hardware. I've decided this is Verizon's best phone at the moment, with everything I need.
Don't worry, you're not alone in having a wife who gets annoyed at flashing and tweaking. Happens to me all the time, but I use the excuse it's one of the few hobbies that I have which doesn't involve the rest of the family and I need a bit of alone time. It kind of works as an excuse until the point where I need to use it again.
I'm looking forward to being part of this community and wanted to say hello.

I like jedi X rom...I got 3 days off my battery with just the right settings...my recommendation is to not mess with the per app dpi for the settings app because now I'm stuck without a settings app and about to switch roms...just about any rom will work as long as it's for your carrier... Best of luck!

Beans is the best! photosphere camera (page 1 of forum) works great with build 16! Check it out! Also, I agree about Jedi: definitely magic battery settings. Enjoy your new hobby! My wife is the same way.
