4 questions. After buying a new s3.................. - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a i9300 16GB.
1.It was bought from another country. Can I still get warranty from my country? do I need to ship it back to the same country if something happens.
2. If my firmware is updated (as Kies says), is my device safe from sudden death?(it says that "this is the lates firmware")
3. Should I keep the 4.1.2 official ROM or should I replace it with a better ROM ?
4.Is it ok to use a magnetic pouch ?

1. Does your phone have International warranty? If not, you'll have to send it back to the country of purchase.
2 & 3. Firmwares after XXELLA are 'supposedly' safe from SDS (or was it about the Exynos abuse?? Somebody please confirm) but Samsung has not confirmed it yet. Stay on the 4.1.2 version.
4. No idea, mate.

what do you mean "supposedly"?
It is the motherboard crashing this. Phone bricking issue.

1. That probably means you don't have International warranty.
2. 'Supposedly' because Samsung has never confirmed it.

I found my small book like warranty in the box and it doesn't have any deal info on it. No international warranty ?
Also if Samsung didn't confirm it, does this mean that still my device could die and no hope for me if this happens as I don't have warranty either? :\

Depends how new you're device is and what motherboard it had it in anyway. Firmwares after ELA supposedly have the software fix for the hardware. Samsung has not out right said it is a fix but a dev, name escapes be at the minute, is reported to have identified the attempted fix in update 7 kernels.
The exynos vulnerability is also fixed.

Thanks and a few questions

Hi All,
I have just picked up my Galaxy S2 which WAS locked to 3 UK.
However I followed this handy video from GIFGAF
Once I have install the insecure Kernal = GT-I9100_XWLA4_insecure - THANK YOU
Then Rooted the device - THANK YOU lyriquidperfection
I tried my SIM but the phone was still locked. I then downloaded an app called Galaxy S Unlock and it unlcoked my phone.
Should my phone have unlocked after I rooted the insecure kernal or was I ment to do it as above?
My phone was original on 3 uk and is heavely branded with a splash screen on boot up and apps thats cant be removed. Does anyone know how I can remove this branding?

I would recommend you to do a nandroid backup with the stock rom before you flash another one. It's not a huge deal, just nice to have around. And you can use titanium backup to get rid of the bloatware and backup apps

Go to www.sammobile.com and download a stock firmware and flash through Odin. Do not use repartition or pit files and you should be fine.

Make sure that you have the drivers installed and kies is completely closed. You might have to go into task manager on the computer and close anything that has kies in it.
And I'm sure sammobile has the unbranded firmware on it's site

I have a few questions and I think you have the set up that Iam trying to achieve.
The ROM that I have uploaded after your help I have been playing about with the phone and its definitely for me. This is really the first real play about I have had with Android.
However if has allot of Vodafone software / programs installed that I cant remove. Can you recommend a good ROM that is carrier software free and is compatible with any Android updates?
Accessories
Thinking about getting the following
Original Samsung 2000mah battery
Hard case with a flip stand that can take the larger battery
I have also got myself a USB JIG ready just incase
What are you thoughts

Sorry, just got out of the hospital..
I'm personally on Rootbox jellybean. It's carrier free and light (sounds like you like it light)
But with that being said, you can debloat (get rid of the carrier apps) with titanium backup. You can delete or even freeze apps (freezing is making the app not show in the app drawr and make it inactive). You just need to root the firmware you're on.
And I personally chose a set of two anker 1900mah batteries with an external wall charger. It doesn't require a bigger back and it basically triples the battery life

Yes I do like it light!!
Is Titanium Back the same sort of software as CWM which I have installed on my SD card?
Have you got a link for it?
I had noticed you had the anker 1900mah batteries which I had looked at but iam not to confident about buying batteries from ebay.
Can You charge the battery in the phone or do you have to charge it on the dock which means take it out of the phone each time?

I had the same as you mate.
There is nothing you can do at the moment.
There are several guys with this problem.
When you try to flash a rom, odin gives you a pit file error, right.
The battery is not charging,right.
You can't pass the first screen, right.
I brought mine to a repair center and they say the whole screen must be replaced,WTF.
Cost:216 euros.
I wait for a solution here on xda.
Perhaps JTAG helps

So it keeps freezing, what can we do?

A lot of people do experience frequently freezing after the latest update from Samsung. A few send in to repair and some did do their own magic stuff. But so far there isn't any clear solution. I think we ow a explanation from Samsung. This is a well known problem and people all over the world have it. But how can we get Samsung to take care. We didn't pay 600 € for a phone that freezes all the time.
I gues I bring mine in repair tomorrow.

The last time it dropped was 6 months ago. So I don't think that's the cause. I also resetted my whole phone a few times so an APK can't be the problem either I think. Or the APK must have broken some hardware? Is that possible?
Since the latest update from Samsung I haven't had any problems with it! What I noticed is that when I clear the RAM memory it only closes 10 apps. Before that were 30 apps. Does the update just limit the RAM or does it close less apps?

[Q] Sudden battery drain in 2-3 hrs and wifi not scanning

Hi Guys! I am using Samsung Galaxy S2 I9100G INDIA model. After more than one year of use suddenly it started working weird.
1. Full 100% charging getting discharged to 0% in 2-3 hrs(99% phone is put on standby mode - not using for anything)
2. When I enable WiFi it is not able to scan. I repeatedly clicked on scan but it is not showing any progress of scanning and not listing my home WiFi network
I have tried:
1. Battery recalibration - no use
2. Factory reset - no use
3. Hard reset - no use
Can somebody help me with this? Is there a way to check that WiFi chip failed or not Or it's an issue with firmware(4.1.2)?

How can we change baseband? You mean by flashing a custom ROM? Please guide me....
I went to service center to know about the issue. He was just re-installed stock ROM by rooting the device even not hearing to my problem. When I say WIFI scanning is not working he turned on WiFi and was saying it's working. But I told him to let the phone scan for any WiFi hotspots close by(My friend phone SIII able to list all available hotspots). He then pressed scan and was saying motherboard was gone. Is that true? How can he say blindly even not checking until I tell him to check the WiFi.
If I need to change the motherboard how much does it costs in INDIA? and does it carries any warranty?

firstly, you should be rooted to change the baseband.
If you are rooted that find any compatible baseband of your rom version and flash the zip file through recovery.
As far as the motherboard is concerned, it is costly affair. Before coming to the conclusion of motherboard being damaged, lets first try all possible options. I don't see the motherboard issue here.
PM me your rom details and i will find a baseband for you.

As suggested I have rooted this and flashed custom ROM - cyanogenmod 10.1
No luck WIFI not working... seems motherboard issue
Can we buy motherboard separately in India? Does it carries any warranty?

Check your local area market for a used motherboard as going for a new one will cost you heavy.
I dont thing it will carry warrenty unless you send it to samsung for repair
What exactly happens when you on the wifi.

No, I am planning to go for samsung service center and get the motherboard replaced. When I called them they confirmed that motherboard will carry 3 months warranty. So, I thought it's better to go for warranty piece.

My advise wud be to see some local repair shop as it might be a loose connection and would not need the replacement. No harm in getting it checked as he will not ask more than 200-300 rs. If still u find it did not work go for motherboard replacement from samsung.
Btw how much did they asked you for motherboard

I think if you are confident enough to do the modifications you should do it, what can happen is a soft brick which can be fixed with Odin. Hardware bricks are rare. Though you should decide for yourself, the only thing I'm telling you is that there's no point to wait as long as you want to do it and you know what you're doing. If you need help you can ask me anytime

I have affraid of problems on hardware, like screen or touch that doesn't work or motherboard burned (sudden death problems for example)
Sudden death shouldn't be a problem with newer firmwares, but other hardware issues are relatively rare, so I'd go ahead my phone stayed stock for approximately 6 - 7 hours.

And your phone never had a problem with hardware?
No never. I had a SanDisk SD card fail on me, but that was replaced under warranty but nothing Samsung related.
But it's your warranty so bear in mind that they may reject any claim, although in the UK the fact that you've modified software does not give them the right to decline a hardware claim.

I don't think you should be that afraid of doing it. The chance of a fail is very low and the sudden death syndrome has been fixed long time ago. If you really want it, give it a shot... Personally I've never had any hardware related problems while flashing ROMs
And also the European buyer protection law is on your side

I'm with you there, if you do it by hand you should have a better idea of what is going on, and imho if you don't have the time to learn what's involved then you should query whether you really want to go down the custom root

Then don't do it, although I went custom route from day 1 I was using stock based roms until recently, this is the first Android device I actually felt comfortable using stock even if it was a little flabby.
Stick a launcher on and look around here there is a lot you can do without even rooting your device, there really is no hurry to do anything.

when u are ready to root and flash custom rom, flash a custom recovery like cwm too. NANDROID BACK UP straight away after flashing custom recovery. The cyanogenmod installer is safe to use. I have personally used it and it was smooth. Back up ur efs too. If u dun know wat is efs, go read on it. Good luck rooting and flashing. It is safe unless u dun follow instructions or read carefully.
