Need help with rooting - HTC Droid DNA

Alright guys...so it's been a while since i've rooted a phone (Thunderbolt) and I need some help being pointed in the right direction. I'm running stock on the latest update right now, i'm not sure if this new update changed the possibility of using the latest rooting methods. So right now what steps should I take? S-off first? bootloader? Idk if you guys could help that would be great!

bump

Yes, the update nullified current rooting methods. There is not root or unlock currently available.
If you haven't taken the update, then go to the "original android development" subforum, and look for the top sticky thread for s-off. That will guide you through rooting, unlocking the bootloader, changing recovery, and then finally s-off.

Since you've taken the ota you can't root your phone.
But if you hadn't taken the OTA then the steps would be supercid>unlock bootloader>s off. In that order. Each step requires the previous. But s off us not necessary to root, so you could do the first 2 steps then install a custom recovery from there.

dang, thanks guys. am I just gonna have to wait till there's a rooting process for the new update then?

Unfortunately yes. I wrote up a guide that solves your other questions, but since you're updated, it's a bit of a moot point.

I got the OTA update message and before I did this I wanted to know does anyone know yet if it breaks ROOT?

According to a tweet from the AlphaRev team, you aren't supposed to take the OTA unless you have already rooted using their S-OFF utility. There wasn't anything else to go along with the tweet, so if I were you I would wait for a confirmation on whether or not it breaks root OR you could be a guinea pig. I would think that HTC has patched the exploit in the update given that it has something included that changes the bootloader.
Just a FRIENDLY reminder, please remember to post questions like these in the Q&A section next time.
Yeah that is why I was afraid to update.. Be nice to have the new Android OS but the only thing I use ROOT for at this time is for Titanium Backup. But I don't want to take the update and find it will no longer work. I had used Revolutionary Root Method.
I'm not really up for flashing a whole ROM I just keeping phone as stock as possible but unlocked for great software like Titanium Backup. Yeah your right should of been in Q&A well maybe a mod will move this thread.
Read the rules please. Wrong area.

If you are rooted do not take the ota!!! There is a rooted version of the update in development section. Just install that and you will have all the goodies with none of the headaches.

software update question (pre root )/hboot 1.5

I'm currently stock (hboot 1.5,, software# 2.08.651.2,,prl version 21083). I am about to root as soon as I'm 100% sure of the procedure from start to finish. My question is, should i take any OTA updates before I root?,,,,,,,I'm fully aware of the risk in doing this, coming from the evo4g( really don't want to be stuck stock for months, while everyone else is flashing away),,,,I'm a firm believer of searching, before asking, but if there's a better software version to gain root from, I want to be running it.
I do realize that starting out with this version of software means I'm stuck with hboot 1.5,,just couldn't find any posts referencing later OTA software versions possibly being better or worse to root from

Nope, it matters not what software version you're on. Only hboot, and in you're case, like me, you're screwed either way :'(
I guess I figured as much, thanks,,,I'm a little confused about current root methods for hboot 1.5,,,I see there's fastboot/copynpaste/htc unlock(not too scary),,,install SU,,,something, something can't unlock boot partition(no kernals),,,possibly fastboot install recovery in order to be able to do so. I also read in another thread, there are two ways. The HTC way and a better XDA way, of rooting,,,I'm sold on a better XDA way,,,any suggestions?
The only way to root hboot 1.5 is to use the htcdev unlock.

Take the OTA (2.17.651.5) then unlock with htc method.
If you unlock now and use cstom recovery, you will have to flash stock recovery in order to update to (2.17.651.5) latest OTA.
And it will also break root i think. so better update first then unlock then root.
I have some updated info put together from several posts that may help you on your tour if hboot 1.50

i think you have copied that link from another post of yours so it will not work as XDA automatically shortens the link with "...." so please replace the "show....php" with "showthread.php" or use http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1495358
Thanks man. I've been trying to figure it out for a while.

[Q] root latest update rezound

Hey all,
I have been using Rezound Cubed forever and finally updated my phone with the latest global ruu and am now unrooted of course.
I have my bootloader locked and still have s-off. Just want to make sure I take all the right steps. I remember when I rooted this phone it was a little more complicated than any other phone I've had, especially when I had to use the paperclip method...wow. I just haven't seen any instructions to go from the point I am at. I am assuming that all I should have to do is flash a new recovery. Can someone verify this for me? Thanks.
Sorry...I got it taken care of. This thread can be removed.

New DNA with Questions

I hope I posted this in the rigth section, if I didnt I appologize. So, I used to have an HTC Thunderbolt and yesterday I upgraded to the DNA and I love it. But I do have a few questions. See I want to root it, but I dont want to have to hassle with all the custom ROM stuff again. Plus all I really see a need for me is to have root access. So I did do some looking and came across these links
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=36976137
and
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1996389
Im still a little new to the rooting scene and just want to make sure I know what im doing before I do it. So here are my questions.
1) If I root will I still be able to install the OTA updates that come on my phone?
2) Are the two links above both rooting methods, just different ways of doing it?
3) If yes to 2, is there a current "best" way to root the DNA?
4) If I decide to un-root, is there a way to do that? (im sure there is and a guide even)
I think that is all the questions I have for now. Thank you very much and keep up the great work here.

Follow the first link you posted because in order to unlock the bootloader you need the super CID hack then after you do the super CID hack go to the htcdev.com page and follow those instructions and then either flash a rooted rom or the Subusybox.zip to get root
To un-root simply lock the bootloader and run the RUU file

1) In short, no. To get the ota you'll have to install the stock recovery, and maybe relock, etc, etc. The easiest way is just to flash a rom based off the ota
2)Yes, but the second links to a thread which then in turn links to the first thread you in posted. Just use the first link you posted
3)See #2
4)ruu and fastboot oem lock, if your s off then its a little more complicated, but you will be able to be 100% stock as opposed to 99%

Thank you guys very much for that info. I greatly appreciate it. One last question for now. I have seen the term "S-off" a few times, what exactly is that?

It means that the Security Flags have been turned OFF (S-OFF) and it allows you to write unsigned.img's and do other stuff to parts of the device that with Security ON you wouldn't be able too such as writing to the boot partition while in recovery, flash radios to the radio partition

[Q] ???s rooting, new dna

I am finally deciding to upgrade my TB to the DNA. It has been out a while, so I figure any bugs are worked out. I have a few questions...
1. What is the easiest rooting app / procedure for the DNA? and where can it be found?, and also, the reversibility of the rooting process should be considered, in the event that it needs to be unrooted for a return or warranty
2. Does the rooting process include the S-Off, or is that a separate procedure?, or is it event necessary?
3. A couple of the places where I read about rooting the DNA state that you need to flash either CWM or TWRP...is the 4EXT considered an acceptable recovery for the DNA rooting procedure? How would it be loaded in the rooting / flashing procedure?
4. I'm partial to Virus's and Santod's Eternity ROMs for the TB over at Infected, and have been using them for two years now; is there one out there close enough that I would be happy with, comparing it to Eternity?
Any and all information that you would be able to provide and point me to would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.
I'll be doing the same shortly. If I get to it before you I'll let you know what I did?

Rumrunner is the S-off and unlock method. Since htcdev blocked unlocking this device, we get both in one.
Reverting s-off unlock is simple and has instructions in a thread, will find and edit post with link soon.
CWM and TWRP are the only two custom recoveries that I know of.
I don't have experience with those roms to give you insight.
Edit: s-off to complete stock thread:
