SIII - Cracks on side casing? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I had heard months ago of some people having cracks in their SIII casing on the metallic side trim.
Back then i checked and couldnt find any but now ive can see one on each corner of the phone. Im presuming this may be the way they are manufactured and I had just missed them before?
However I now have a crack in the same trim on the usb port.
This is frustrating ad its never been dropped and always been in a case.
Anyone sent had same prob and had Samsung repair free of charge?
Im in the UK and bought the SIII at launch SIM Free.

The 'cracks' on the four corners are actually joints/mould marks - it's not metallic but polycarbonate.
I've read (search xda) that the thin bezel around the edge of the phone is known to crack at the thinnest parts on early models and were repaired under warranty. Best contact Samsung to arrange a repair, as long as the casing has no damage marks I don't see why they won't do yours.

[Q] (Where) Galaxy S 2 Warranty Seal

Is there some sort of seal on the Galaxy s 2 that will allow samsung to notice if the phone has been opened, disassembled? If there is can you tell me where is it?
On my phone bought here in hong kong, there is a rectangular sticker on the top left corner, next to the screw.
At least I think that us what it is.

I've taken mine apart completely, and meticulously, no seals, first phone I've ever seen without one! There is a water-mark seal on the mainboard to see about moisture damage, but unless the phone went to Samsung directly, I highly doubt any technician would even know it's there, or bother with a full dissasembly to find it (It's under the screen of all places)

[Q] Dropped White S2, chipped silver edge, replacement?

Hi Guys,
Dropped my White S2 (on my drunken stroll home - dropped it whilst removing it from its protective pouch!!!) just before Christmas and taken 3 or 4 chips out of the silver edge, it has been an eyesore for me ever since, my once beautiful phone is now ugly! Most people say it is hardly noticeable but I know its there!
I've repaired phone screens before, desoldered chips, fixed DVD drive lasers etc so I am fairly competent with electronics and circuitry.
After looking at several guides (all of Black S2s), from what I can tell from pictures, the silver part is part of the main housing? Bit of a bummer but can someone confirm this who has taken one apart?
Is it fixed/glued to the screen part?
On eBay you can buy the complete housing for around $10usd including the battery door. I believe the silver bezel is part of / attached to the front housing.
The item shown is black but I'm sure they would have white as well.

you cannot replace the silver bezel without removing the screen which will get damaged if you tried.
If you want to change the bezel then u would have to replace the screen too
A nice idea,if you wouldn't mind your phone being a couple millimeters wider and a few grams heavier is to get a bumper.Especially some metallic(mostly aluminum) ones are quite cool.I now use Case-mate POP case, but have set my eyes on getting the Taurus aluminum bumper,as I too have a slight hit on the silver bezel.
Although I have to admit, with the Taurus in particular, the phone looks like Robocop to be honest. There are others too though and there is also a thread in the Accessories section.
Ahh that sucks! I've seen official replacement screens for around £60, may have to do it that way!

[Q] Is this screen damage or digitizer damage?

I got my pebble blue GS3 a week ago. It was used, but in pristine condition, with a scratch-less back and front. Since day one, I've been using a rubber back protector for the phone, which covers the back as well as the sides completely.
Today, I dropped my phone from pocket height on the floor, and picking it up I didn't notice any scratches or cracks and the phone worked perfectly fine. The phone was in the back protector as always, so I didnt think any thing of it and put it back in my pocket.
A few hours later, sitting on my laptop, I picked up my phone to make a call and noticed the golden colored discoloration in the bottom right corner of the phone (see attached pictures). I assume this was the corner on which the phone was dropped.
The discoloration appear to be air bubbles, stuck inside the screen. When I press the corner of the bubble, it shifts slightly and changes shape as air bubbles under screen protectors do. When I press it really hard, the golden starts disappearing and becomes blue just like the rest of the phone. The screen and touch works completely perfectly, and there is absolutely no difference in the quality of the AMOLED. From this, I assumed that the digitizer is fine, but I cant for the life of me figure out how these bubbles formed and why they wont go away
I searched for hours, but couldn't find a single post with the same problem. I would love to hear some ideas to try and get rid of this discoloration. I've barely had this phone for a week, and seeing it ruined already makes me sad
If it cant be fixed, I guess the final solution would be to get the front glass replaced. But before that, I would like to try any and all suggestions that you guys might want to throw my way
The glass is glued to the digitizer whit some sort of gel.
Your glass has come off the digitizer and form air bubbles.
The only way to restore it is change the glass and digitizer.
Maybe a really tight case can solve it when it pushes the glass to the digitizer.

I was planning on getting a heat gun somehow, and heat the corner at 180F. It is said its the temperature at which the gel between the front glass and the digtizer melts or something, and becomes easy to seperate.
Do you think this would work? There is just a golden colored bubble, and it isnt affecting the working of the digitizer in any way. It is just next to the back button, and the button works absolutely perfectly.
Still waiting for any more suggestions on how to fix this Would also appreciate if someone could link me to someone with the same problem as this. I swear I've searched for hours and didnt find anything.. I can't be the only one in the world
The golden color is the top film from the digitizer.
So I don't think a heat gun is doing the job.
You can try but be very careful not to damage it more.
Wish you good luck.

You are not alone. My S4 have the same issue, and the screen bezel is thiner than the S3... Started a couple weeks ago just after a visit to the carrier tech support, was there for unknow poor signal issue, solved by a SIM replacement and reprogramming. I know they dropped on the floor or on a work table/desk it as is "naked" without the protective case... Came back after a couple of days when I noticed the "stain" on right bottom corner and they said they handle the devices careful also have rubber pads on floor and tables to protect in the event of an "accidental drop"... So they will not replace for free, only via insurance and I have to pay a difference $$$
Anyhow, after that I dropped it so bad on rough concret right on that corner, protective case do they work but I think that corner took a good shock... I do massage the spot and it gone away for a couple of days then come back. I don't k know if temperature changes affect as it could be moisture from condesation penetrating the thin edge between bezel and screen...
I will try different cases to see if it can mask the damage until I can afford the insurance diference $ then will replace or maybe upgrade my phone...

s6 edge screen cracked

My 2 week old s6 edge screen has cracked. It has been in the clear view case the whole time, never dropped and today i saw a crack that runs straight from the left hand edge near the bottom all the way to the top in the middle of the phone.

I'm sure it's not! my 2 days old s6 edge already got a scratch on the screen! I put it in my pocket all the time with no other stuff. I'm thinking of exchanging it.
The screen scratches very easily.
It scratches easy yes, but it shouldn't really crack easily.

Cracks in hard materials tend to start and propagate along weak spots, therefore scratched glass cracks much more easily than smooth glass. The whole trick to Gorilla Glass is to produce as smooth a surface as possible, and to harden the surface to make it more resistant to scratching, thus less prone to cracking. So, if it scratches easily, it probably cracks easily too.

I actually think its the coating on the glass that that scratches rather than the glass itself personally, Corning didn't really make a big deal about scratch proofing with GG4 but more about shatter resistance.
Either way I don't think a light surface scratch (not a deep gouge) should cause a crack, and if it does then I'd expect it to be covered.

Per the article I linked above, two important features of Corning's manufacturing process are to prevent surface imperfections in manufacturing and hardening the surface of the glass to prevent scratching (a form of surface imperfection) in use. Those two things are what make Gorilla Glass more shatter resistant then traditional glass.
OUTSTANDING SURFACE QUALITY:
Corning’s proprietary fusion process gives Gorilla Glass the same superior surface as all of our high technology display substrates. This extraordinarily precise, highly automated process produces glass with exceptionally clean, smooth, flat surfaces and outstanding optical clarity.
DAMAGE RESISTANCE:
Gorilla Glass is chemically strengthened through an ion-exchange process that creates a deep compression layer ["hardening" in laymen's terms] on the surface of the glass substrate. This layer acts as “armor” to reduce the introduction of flaws.

Nearly every piece of glass in your life is cut by intentionally scratching it followed by a light application of force. Here's a video of a man cutting 19mm (3/4") thick glass. The depth of the cut is a tiny fraction of the thickness of the material. You might even think of it as a "light surface scratch," as you say above. And he didn't have to drop it from a height of 6' break it.
My suspicion is that Corning has not yet perfected the manufacturing process for complex shapes, given the number of complaints of scratched and broken displays on the S6 Edge.
same here
damn.. the same thing happened to me just about 10 minutes ago. The difference is that it happend when the phone was in my own hands and I was peacefully browsing.. all of a sudden I heard a soft cracking sound. mine is also 2 weeks old, it is always in its case and literally there is not even a tiny scratch on it. Front and rear glass is like brand new. Wtf???
Going to pay a visit to the local Samsung service point..
Any updates...?
Hi there, any updates on this?
I just recognized this phrase in the starting post: "today i saw a crack that runs straight from the left hand edge near the bottom all the way to the top in the middle of the phone."
Almost exactly like mine! Mine is starting approximately from the middle of the left edge, curving up to the top. Could this be a coincidence? Anyway I brought mine to the local
service point on Monday and no questions or interrogation... I was told that it will be ready within a week or two. Something smells a bit fishy, but let's just hope that this will not
happen to more and more people.
Same exact thing happened to my screen.
I have the same exact crack in my screen. This HAS to be a design flaw. Samsung and T-Mobile were no help. They told me to shell out the money to get it fixed. I've only has it for 1 month!!!

Hi,
How did it happen? Was it in use, or in a case, pockets or elsewhere at the time it happened?
We should compare our phones' manufacturing place, probably this is no coincidence from now on... I have mine at home, but will check it later today and post it.
Mine is also from T-Mobile... How strange. Can I ask which country are you guys from? I'm from Hungary.
Will get back to this thread when I get back home.
edit: you can use your IMEI number to identify the manufacturing place, there are plenty of places on the web where you can do this.
Just checked mine...
If you cannot find a good analyzer online, just check the imei, remove the first SIX digits, note the next two, and you should have 7 digits remaining.
Mine is ike: xxxxxx-06-xxxxxxx - this means that it was manufactured in Hong Kong, China, or Mexico.
Here are the codes:
01 or 10: Finland
(Mobile manufactures in Finland are of the best quality)
00: Original factory made mobile
(Mobiles manufactures in original factory are of best quality)
02 or 20: Emirates
(Mobiles manufactured in Emirates are of Average to good quality)
30 or 03: Korea
(Mobiles manufactured in Korea are of good quality)
04 or 40: China
(Mobiles manufactured in china are average as well as good quality but not as good as 00, 01 or 10)
05 or 50: Brazil, USA or Finland
(Good quality mobiles)
06 or 60: Hong Kong, China or Mexico
(Average quality mobile phones)
08 or 80: Germany
This indicates that your mobile is manufactured in Germany and is of fair quality.
13: Azerbaijan
Mobiles manufactured in this country are of low to medium quality

Anyone else? I'm getting really curious...
Mine cracked too, had mine for 3 days and it cracked from the top right all the way to the bottom left. I have no idea what caused it to happen as it was always handled with care.
cracked in a week
My screen just cracked after one week of purchase. I noticed a bubble on the left side of the screen, I touched it and the screen spilt from left to right. Never dropped, in a heavy duty case, with a screen protector. My imei number is 06 according to the post above.
I spoke to Samsung and they said that this is considered damage to to phone and that it would void my warranty, but seeing how it has only been a week they would see what they could do.
When asked if this is a common problem he responded that this was the first call of this nature.. hmm
I'll let you guys know how it turns out for meeting. As for the rest of you, I suggest calling samsung and referring them to this forum.
3 week crack
I had the same issue, I have checked other forums and have not seen anything in regards to this besides this thread. I had a case on it from the moment I took it out the packaging. The phone was never mishandled or dropped the case is perfect and always stayed in either my pocket with no other items or on a flat surface. Took the phone out of my pocket after not looking at it for a couple of hours and saw the crack on the right side that extends up and down the entire side and through the exact center of the phone.
At first the phone still functioned normally but now the screen does not work at all. Has anyone else experienced this? I called samsung and verizon and went into the local verizon wireless store and they all told me the normal shpeel about how they don't recognize this as a problem and I needed to pay for the repairs.
After 3 weeks of struggling...
Finally. Relief.
I contacted Samsung, after T-Mobile's official service told me that I am the one who caused the screen to crack, despite T-mobile's official resolution that the phone has NO signs of any physical damage.
Samsung requested the original documents I have received after the purchase. I have also sent them the photos I made from several angles showing the crack. After a few days they contacted me,
apologized for the inconvenience and offered to replace the damaged screen.
All in all, this ended well. Hope you guys can achieve this soon, I suggest everyone to inquire at Samsung.
ps.: a friend of mine had the same issue with a regular S6 (not the edge version). Considering this and the above posts, something smells fishy...
Has anyone experienced the digitizer stop working along where the crack is after it happened?

Replacement Back Glass

Well dropped my s7 at a track meet on its back. Glass got cracked but just the back it the camera or frame. Really isn't a bother to me but trying to sell a galaxy s7 with a cracked back for anywhere near its value is extremely hard so Ima just swap it. My question is are the ones on ebay (only ones I could find) trustworthy, will the waterproof still be intact (surprisingly my phone is still waterproofed with the cracked back), and how hard Is it to remove the back? Ive done screen replacements and back replacements before and other components so I'm not a newbie exactly but never have done an s7.
Maybe.
No.

Check out iFixit's Teardown HERE.
I repair devices for a living and though I haven't done an S7 yet, I imagine it isn't much different that an S6. It won't be waterproof, most likely, after you repair it but if you get the proper adhesive, it should be pretty close. You'll need lots of heat, and even more patience. Use a very thin opening tool to lift an edge of the glass. I prefer to use playing cards. Slide a card under and gently start working your way through the glue. Heat, work the card, repeat. It's already broken so you don't have to be super careful in removing it. Use the Ifxit guide to be aware of any danger points.
Good luck!
