Using 2.04 stock kernel with Viper 1.1.3 - HTC Droid DNA

Is it possible to use the 2.04 stock ota kernel with older roms running the 1.15.605.4 release keys? I seem to have some benefit on overall smoothness with the 2.04 kernel but like the options of the 1.1.3 viper rom. Curious if anyone has tried this combo.
Thanks in advance.

You can try it but you might end up with a boot loop... Or stuff might not work right like wifi or blue tooth ect...

i was running the combo just fine. Didnt use the wifi, so i cant remember since i am unlimited. But other than that, seemed to work fine. Just make sure you flash the modules and boot.img in adb or flash the kernel if your s-off.:good:

Has anyone flashed this kernel?
I downloaded this from the link at the top, and flashed via TWRP recovery (yes I did wipe the caches).
After I rebooted, I checked the Kernel version, and either it didn't work, or the version of this kernel is the same as the original one I had, 1.11.651.3. In fact, I tried this twice, but the results are still the same.
Am I missing something?

Do you have hboot 1.5? Just asking because there are ~2 more steps to take before flashing a kernel... Or I heard you can use Flash Image GUI.

I flashed a AOSP kernel, and my rom didn't load. so I restored a backup and my wifi didn't work and also. So i flashed this kernel and now my backup doesn't work or even any rom that I have downloaded.
using viperrom before.
now nothing is working
questions is:
1. is there a way to flash a kernel, using recovery?
2. what roms work with this kernal?
im getting really sick of this evo3d.

1. Yes, so long as you are NOT HBOOT 1.5
2. This is a stock HTC Sense kernel as clearly outlined in the OP. It is not AOSP.

yeah I have Hboot 1.5
and I know I installed a kernel for AOSP and downloaded an AOSP rom. I should have said that before. but The AOSP rom didnt load, it just hanged on the HTC screen. So i recovered my backup using still on the AOSP kernel, it worked excluding WIFI and some other stuff. so I installed this kernel using GUI app, and restored my back up again. and now it just hangs.
now I can't find a rom for this kernel I downloaded three different roms, all sense. none of them are working.

Synergy r345; anyone get wifi working?

Sorry I'm new so was wondering if anyone could relay or respond. I can't seem to get any wifi tethering to work on Synergy r345.
Same...I was wanting to use the synergy ROM but after I flashed USB tethering was not working and neither was the hotspot it said I was not subscribed.
I am using Steel's ROM for now.

using cwm cuz i have no other choice (htc official root) and wifi is borked.
can someone confirm changes to the new Synergy release?... is the 3G/4G notification gone? Also no settings access in the notification dropdown?
Your different things may not work if you are using a 2.3.3 ROM with a device that got the new OTA. Also 2.3.4 ROMs only work with the new kernels or stuff won't work.
Sent from my HTC Hero making C.R.E.A.M.
Did you unlock with the HTC unlock? If so I do not think its allowing to flash a kernel. It appears to flash but it doesn't. Is the rom you're trying to flash a 2.3 rom? If so try flashing a kernel and seeing in settings if it actually changed. (If you used HTC to unlock that is) wifi was borked on my buddy's phone (used HTC unlock) with any 2.3 rom.
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA App
no, I used revolution for the unlock... I'm just guessing it's the new 2.3.4 I'll just wait it out a week or 2 and see what happens.
Ditto here. Flashed Synergy earlier today, and no wifi (specifically WPA2). It acts like it's going to connect and then just drops. I've tried the "gingerjane" kernel and Dream Kernel, and none work (and I did verify in the Settings that the kernel had properly been installed). I've even tried flashing different radios just for kicks.
This sucks
Flash the newest Synergy build, both wifi and usb tethering are working now. You will have to be familiar with svn, there is a guide on the second post I believe. Or you can wait for somebody to upload the revision 381. Then you can grab it and flash away.

[NOOB] I need help getting back or gen help.

I wanted to root for a while, just looking for a rom that looks and feels stock, but has better battery and all..
well I followed
watch?v=-hPSrzRqtX4&feature=player_detailpage (cannot post link as I'm new)
and successfully got to supra rom.. well I don't like the vanilla 5 screen non sense homescreen, though I do like the crt visuals lol...
Anyways, I can't even use my wifi, it just says error, and I NEED wifi, I use it at home non-stop as I have horrible service.
Well I tried to switch to viperRom - I did the reset in bootloader, then full wipe, then cache and all that..
well, once I installed the viperRom .zip, I started my phone and its just the same as before... I can't switch roms! I know this is prolly some nooby thing I don't understand but I've been searching all night and just want to get everything working and need to sleep haha
any help GREATLY APPRECIATED
What do you mean about not being able to switch roms?

I'm now on viper, with stock kernel and still cannot get wifi to work, any ideas? Any searching turns up kernel issues, and to revert to stock.. well I'm on stock kernel

unless you're having hardware wifi issues, which the best way to determine would be through running a stock rom and stock kernel, my guess is you have a kernel and rom mismatch issue.
the way htc has their kernels compiled includes two things: kernel and modules.
the modules include a wifi module.
if you flash a kernel and then load a rom, chances are the rom might overwrite either the kernel, the kernel modules, or both.
the best way to avoid this scenario is to flash the rom first and then flash the kernel. the kernel flash will load the kernel itself and its modules. i.e. if you're on a rom you want to stay with now, flash the kernel again and then wifi should work.
hope that helps!
Thank you, o figured this out myself, but you were right lol I was using 2.3.3 roms on 2.3.4

I understand that ones with S-OFF are for users that have S-OFF their phone, but WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE between the files? Are the ones without S-OFF in their name were modified to allow system write? More importantly, were the S-OFF files modified in any way?
Also, how do we install these? Are these flashable zips that can be flashed in recovery? Or, these needs to be boot.img flashed first and then modules in recovery?
Thank you

The ones that don't have S-OFF are for flashing the old way using fastboot commands. They are different in the fact that the S-OFF versions have a script that will flash the boot.img and the WiFi Modules.
Zone23, thank you for the info. So, S-OFF are to be flashed straight via recovery without any additional steps. Where these kernels modified in any way or are they truly straight from the factory image?

Is the new kernel compatible with pre-ota phones? If so, does anyone yet have experience with the battery drain vs LK, etc? I wonder if it might play better with the radio than kernels based off the old kernel.

This kernel is only compatible with ROM's that are based on the 2.04.605.2 update... If the ROM you are using is NOT on the 2.04.605.2 update do not use this kernel.

If you are s-off you can just flash the s-off version and it will update the boot.img and modules
If you are s-on you will have to manually flash the boot.img in the bootloader and then the modules.zip in the recovery

So like a bone head, I flashed this kernel despite being on viper 1.1.3. Already on new radio. Works well from what I can see so far. With s-off, I can write to system. Battery life so far seems quite good, similar to LK, etc. No crashes, wifi and radio work fine. Any specific problem you are aware of with new kernel/ pre-ota based ROM?

Interesting. Let us know how it works out for you. Perhaps the real incompatibility is using an old kernel (1.x) on a newer (2.04) rom (reports of flickering screens, broken wifi).
Sounds like using a 2.04 kernel on an older rom is ok.
Unfortunately, that means that until source is released, we won't see the variety of kernels that will work in the newewr, 2.04 based roms that are being developed now.

So far so good. Again, I have the new radio, new kernel and old ROM (viper 1.1.3). Only thing that crashed/hung was kernel tuner, not surprisingly. I froze that and disabled loading of kernel settings with system tuner and all smooth.

Why is this so confusing?
I am rooted with S-Off and unlocked
I did not get the OTA.
I did install the new radio only (1.01.01.0110)
Can I install the 2.04 s-off version though TWRP?
I guess the confusing part is being pre-ota and not wanting to brick or wipe my phone, while having the updated kernel and modules.

[Q] Kernel Issues

Hi,
I've been experiencing a flickering screen for a while on my Droid DNA with Viper 1.2. I've tried to re flash my rom and it hasn't helped and i'm pretty sure it's a kernel issue anyway. I initially had the cubed kernel installed and tried to go back to the stock rom using the file available here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2024776
That didn't do the trick so I tried installing the kernel that is listed on the viper page but it only has boot.img file listed and no modules so my Wifi isn't working. It looks like the modules are supposed to be included with the ROM but that isn't working for me for some reason. It seems to not flicker now but my Wifi isn't working.
Any idea where I can get the correct modules from?
Thanks!
You can't use kernels based on the new base l, such as cubed, on roms based on the new base, such as viper 1.2
Just flash a different custom kernel, such as beast mode
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using xda app-developers app
beastmode or cpalmer's kernels should work for you. if you want to go back to the stock one with viper 1.2, fastboot the boot.img and reflash the ROM (the modules are included in the ROM package)
