I flashed CM10. That went smooth, but started giving me issues a few hours in, so I decided to flash back to ICS. I've done this without a hitch 2 times prior.
Now I get, "Error while restoring /system!" when trying to restore a CM9 backup (one that I've used once already, so I know it was a good backup).
I tried a full system restore to factory GB through ODIN, then reflashed CWM recovery in ODIN, then tried to restore the backup. Nothing but that message...repeatedly.
I then tried flashing a stock, rooted, ICS zip, that worked (flashed) okay (while a few other ROM's did not). Then attempted the restore again...nothing new. Same thing.
I tried flashing the CM9 zip I originally used (it was a nightly that worked well for me). CWM would not execute it.
I saw somewhere someone said to modify the "updater-script" by removing the lines:
"assert(getprop("ro.product.device") == "SGH-I717" || getprop("ro.build.product") == "SGH-I717" ||
getprop("ro.product.device") == "quincyatt" || getprop("ro.build.product") == "quincyatt");".
That actually worked and I was able to flash that with no issues.
I tried the restore...again...to no avail.
I guess if I have to "start from scratch" with everything, so be it, but I would REALLY rather not have to if possible.
I have read through a lot here in the forums, as well as done internet searching. I've seen info that is close to what I'm experiencing, but nothing exactly like it.
I'm at a loss right now.
I'd appreciate any new help that anyone can offer.
Thanks everyone.
Did you by chance rename your backup? If so, is there a space in the name? Do you have the latest version of CWM?

Bubbajoe...thank you.
This morning, while starting to go through system settings and trying to get things close to back to where they were before, I went into ROM Manager (installed by default in CM9) seeing you mention version of the app (and for the record for anyone having the same issue, I left the naming of the backup alone. It was the default that the app gives the file).
While I had tried a couple different CWM versions, the last I was on was v5.8.4.3. There was v5.8.4.8 available. So in a last ditch effort, and keeping in mind that sometimes the solution could either be simplest or the most obviously overlooked one, I updated to that newest version (happens to be the non-touch one), and thought "what the hell...it can't get any worse" and tried the restore one last time. I'm pretty sure I had 5.8.4.8 running when I made the backup, but wasn't thinking that could be the issue.
And it worked! Go figure. That one small version difference did the trick.
Thanks again man!

I was running Task 14 revamped fat rom.
I decided to go back to stock to make sure I could. Basically no other reason.
I followed the sticky for UN-rooting here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1474971. Had a hell of a time getting it Un-rooted. Everything went wrong from the beginning it seemed. Seems the files and guide don't coincide with each other which probably started my problems.
In the process, not sure when. I started getting this stupid triangle with the exclamation point in the middle when it boots.
On searching I have only found that it just means I flashed a wrong kernal or something like that and it's harmless and to ignore it. It's driving me nut though!
I did Have to finally use PDA_SIGNED_P7105.tar.md5 Which I know isn't for my US tab but I'm sure I saw the error BEFORE resorting to this as I couldn't get everything to correctly adb push to the tab either so I finally used that file with Odin knowing it would probably cause problems.
I got everything running as I want again. Fortunately I keep a backup which made my life a little easier once I was able to get back to Task 14 again. But the stupid little triangle is still there after restoring the backup too.
Is there a way to get rid of it without stripping back down to stock without having as many problems? Maybe a kernel to flash? Maybe an update or a quickie guide to uninstalling Task 14 and going back to stock (I don't have any links or local stock roms) or something?
Anyway, could anybody help? I don't want to spend another two days without sleep just trying to get rid of this stupid little thing.
Yeah I'm that anal about the stupid triangle....lmao

I could really use a US copy of a file like this to use with Odin. PDA_SIGNED_P7105.tar

I've been out of the forums for awhile and out of touch with things. Is there a Jelly Bean ROM for the Note where the S Pen and everything works, I guess a stock based ROM? Thanks. And any recommendations on kernels? I believe I was using dagkernel 0.2 last.
The Paranoid Android ROM from JamieD can use SPen. I am sure you are aware that unless they are a TouchWiz based Mod with the apps, you will have to find alternatives.
That is the ROM I use. There is a Kernel available for it as well, but I dont feel the need to OC so I stay on the stock Kernel.

So I downloaded ParanoidAndroid 2.21 and Gapps. I did 3 data wipes as well as cache and dalvik. When I installed the ROM and Gapps and rebooted it went back to my old ROM. I never saw Paranoid. I think maybe because I have an old recovery if that has something to do with it. I am on Android 2.3.6 running ClockworkMod 5.5.0.4. If I need to update, how do I do this? I have downloaded recovery-clockwork-5.8.4.8-quincyatt but it's an .img file and I am reading I need to get into fastboot to install and have no idea what to do. And if possible, I strongly prefer the non touch ClockworkMod, I don't like the idea of accidentally touching the screen and messing up, buttons are much safer and convenient for me.
I updates my cwm through the from manager app on the play store
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda app-developers app
I have downloaded that, but when I go to do it, it doesn't show the Note as an option??? Also, I have SGH-I717. I just want a Jelly Bean ROM that the S Pen works with that I can overclock.
Are you getting an error when flashing the PA ROM? Otherwise, I can imagine why it isn't flashing.
Are you following these steps:
1. Wipe dalvik, cache, system, and factory reset
2. Flash PA rom
3. wipe cache and dalvik (probably not necessary but I do it anyway)
4. Flash GAPPS
5. Reboot
Even though you seem adverse to using a touch recovery, I would highly recommend you use TWRP instead of CWM as your custom recovery. I have had fewer issues and errors using TWRP. It is a better custom recovery IMHO.
I hope this helps! After using PA you'll never feel the need to change your ROM again !
I redownloaded it thinking it may be a bad download. This is what I get after deleting dalvik, cache, factory reset/data and trying to install...
assert failed: getprop("ro.product.device") == "SGH-I717" || getprop ("ro.build.product") == "SGH-I717" || getprop("ro.product.device") == "quincyatt" || getprop("ro.build.product") == "quincyatt"

Looks like an issue with CWM. I still recommend switching to TWRP even though you've stated that you'd prefer a non-touch recovery.

LOL, Canada. I love basketball, that is all. Sorry guys, I got it working. I installed TWRP and it installed just fine. Thanks.
Hi Everyone,
I just rooted my friend's Note and I'm attempting to flash the latest CM10 nightly. I'm using the CWM-based Touch Recovery v5.5.0.4. Every attempt to flash CM10 has lead to the (status 7) error, in which the assert has failed. I've attempted to remove the assert from the script and the installation is simply aborted in CWM. (I feel like doing this is more of a work-around then a fix though, since I'd potentially have to do it every time I flash a new CM rom). Just wondering if this has happened to anyone else and if there is a fix out there. I've done a good amount of searching and haven't found anything.
Thanks in advance.

Sounds like an outdated recovery to me

Last year over in the inspire threads,, we affectionately began to call it rom "mangler"..
Koush did okay, but the turning point for me, was buying the touch version, then trying to get the app to flash the recovery back to the device.
It shows the I717 as unsupported, yet the CWM website has it.
But every time I try to download it ...I get garbled jibberish..
Hence TWRP ...version 2.3.2.3...and it's flawless
I think koush likes the money..
He has never replied to one pm or email I've sent ....g

Correct, Your phone is different and not a fascinate. Not really sure what is workin for your guys as far as flashing. Every phone has its own personality. B brads acts like my one ex few a year or two ago! hahahaha But ya mine does that every time when coming back from stock or cm9 ( status 7 errors) after ics usually wiping data and cache flash 4.2 you might get status 7 3 or 4 times it should boot into the next recovery then flash 4.2 again. What I do now is (if coming from stock) I go right to 4.2. This last time i flashed the cwm recovery then flashed the 4.2. Usually it will boot into the cwm5 add your golden. Because of the change in partitioning if not going back to stock just wiping and flashing those few times should get you there. I had no issues with that though when I flashed right from stock and skipped ics. I explained i what I did HERE in post #7. Everyone does/finds what works after a bit of crack flashing lol If you still having issues one more thing you can try before having or decide to go to stock and back up is try flashing a 4.1.2 rom then 4.2.2. I seriously had to keep trying to flash the zip several times and getting status 7's every time before it took. What a pain!

I got that part. I am so sorry, I didn't ask this correctly. What I'm trying to ask is, does this achieve everything that the ODIN package floating around does, which includes the modem and perhaps other things. I know it takes the phone back to stock as well. I have no idea why that would be necessary to install a radio. I've flashed radios before.
My goal is to be able to install one of the 4.3 TW roms that requires the MJ9 radio for wifi to work. If this achieves that goal, then flashing this file is clearly the way to go!!!

Yea I know and you can also reference it via google play. My problem is I am a bit of a newbie and it was not obvious to me how to install. You might ask how I got the current version - well that was a side effect of the folks making it really easy to crack the note 2 back in Dec (2012). You just ran this script and it cracked the boot loader and installed twrp (I believe it used odin) so I never really did learn how to update twrp.
This afternoon I tried the version of google play but it wanted to isntall an 'open bootloader" and I wasn't sure why it wanted to do that since my bootloader was already cracked and all I wanted it to do is to update twrp.

So I guess this begs the question do I download this zip file and then use twrp 2.6.3.1 to install it like a rom ?

That is correct. Simply download the zip, copy it to your sd card, boot into recovery, choose the zip and flash (just like you would a ROM. When you reboot, twrp will be updated. You can also download goo manager from the market. And choose "install custom recovery" I just find flashing the zip eliminates several steps ie software down loads etc.
