I have a Verizon Razr. (912). I'm leaving for Florida tomorrow and will absolutely need my phone for... well a phone, text, navigation, and camera at a bare minimum. I haven't received the OTA push yet. I have a 16GB sd card that should be arriving UPS this afternoon and I have the correct update file sitting here on my computer (ICS to JB.... the BIG file)
This is a completely stock and NOT rooted phone.
So, as much as I'd like some jelly bean goodness, how would you advise me here? Should I update this afternoon using the sd card or should I leave it alone and go on my trip and just do it when I get home?
ALSO... if the pushed OTA finds my phone while I'm gone, and assuming I haven't updated, how bothersome will it be in trying to tell me there's an update? Will it pester the crap out of me or can I dismiss it until I WANT to update?
Firstly, I would wait until the OTA is pushed out to update.
Secondly, if the OTA is like the others I've seen, it will be incredibly annoying about updating. The ics update drive me insane.
Just do it. Be a man

Although things are likely to work smoothly, there is that small chance that you'll do something, er, "dumb," and have to do a fdr and reinstall all your apps from GPlay. That would require several hours that you don't have. Wait.

I know its been hashed a thousand times, and this thread can be deleted if its too redundant. I regret thoroughly getting the 2.1 leak on my wife's phone. I love my rooted eris and ELB rom has made it absolutely functional and keeps getting better with constant updates and feedback, while my wife's eris is stagnant and hopeless. Constant dropped calls, and sound outages, and I cannot get a replacement because Verizon's system doesn't show it on 2.1 so until it is (which cant be done because we cant get the OTA when you have the leak) they wont even consider sending a refurb. To make matters worse, even if I could get a refurb, they are coming shipped with 2.1 that cant be rooted. At least if I got a refurb and the problems continued we would be able to complain enough to get a discounted upgrade maybe. I don't think anyone is working on this issue anymore as the phone has been left behind in the dust without root, and I don't blame them. I would too if I was a dev. I will NEVER NEVER install another leaked ROM. I will always be patient enough to wait for root. Yeah Frisco you were right, and all the others that waited patiently. Sigh OK done venting. Now to go "accidentally" drive over my wife's phone and pay the damn insurance.
I too regret installing the leak, however I have had none of the problems you have described. My phone may be a bit sluggish at times, but I've never had a dropped call since I've gotten the phone, or any other problems for that matter. Sorry to hear your having ask these problems though.

I didn't have any problems whatsoever with getting a refurb while I was on leak. I called them up and mentioned having a couple of the common problems(I actually did have issues), told the guy that I had done the factory reset and it hadn't helped and the new phone was on the way. Sorry to hear that's not how it happened to work for you. Did they specifically say they could tell she wasn't on the OTA? I'm surprised they were able to tell with the similarities between the two versions. Maybe you can try and install the OTA manually on hers and A) see if it helps in general, or B) see if Verizon can tell she has the regular version then.

As far as I know, you cannot upgrade to the ota if you are running one of the leaked roms because of the hboot version.

Acutally you can go OTA from one of the leaks, just not root from a leak. Now going OTA does not change the hboot version of the leaks, so even with the OTA you cannot leak. But if for some reason you want the OTA instead of a leak ( and with V3 leak they are the same anyway) follow this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695593 make sure to read it all, but from what I have read and understand that is the offical OTA release that can be manually installed on the phone, so if it ever needs to go back to verizon they cannot hit you for having unoffical software on the phone
Ah, this I did not know, but very useful. Thanks for posting the link.

If you want root that bad, you can do like I did. I had Leakv1 on my phone and just went ahead and loaded the new RUU OTA update onto it. Found someone on Craigslist that was willing to sell an eris that had the OTA on it for like $150 and ship it to me. Rooted it, then put my old phone on ebay for auction. It sold for like $170 with free shipping. Everyone came out happy and I got a rooted phone and like $10 in my pocket.
Be careful when buying phones on craigslist/ebay/etc. and look out for those Bad ESNs.
Anyway, just another option for ya...
In about an hour from now retail stores will be open early for this the "official" launch of the Evo 3D. I received mine yesterday morning and spent the next several hours putting it all together, from configurations to apps to screens. I decided not to get the OTA given the bugs reported. I've also read over the various threads, especially the one on bugs. As I type this, with my Evo 3D fully loaded with all my stuff, I must say I am experiencing no real issues of concern, and am but left with two questions for you knowledgeable folks:
1. The OTA doesn't seem to be bugging me, only if I go look for it via Settings will I get prompted to install it. I use Calengoo instead of the stock calendar (including widget) and all seems to be fine without the OTA, and I like having my phone icon on the lock screen, and at this point a hard reset would mean hours of work putting things together and configuring yesterday. So, you people who understand the world of OTA: if HTC fixes the bugs in the original OTA that many of you already installed, will they pull the one I am being prompted to install, and replace it with another one? In other words, if I wait, should this issue be fixed by HTC and I get an OTA prompt in the future that does not have the noted bugs with the pre-launch version?
2. The only issue is the Watch app. Can't watch the pre-installed 3D Green Hornet movie, cycles forever trying to download the license. I understand this has been fixed, also as an OTA. But I cannot seem to get past not accepting the first 26 meg buggy OTA to get to the second 2 meg Watch app OTA. Is there a way to get the Watch OTA without installing the original OTA? Am I missing something?
The only other comment is that even though I haven't been able to see the 3D Green Hornet movie because I don't know how to access the second OTA which apparently fixes the Watch app because I didn't install the first OTA which screws up the lock screen, looking at the samples and taking 3D pictures is going to take some getting used to! Oh yeah, I had already uploaded my 10000+ songs to Google Music Beta. What a great service. No more copying song files and filling up SD cards.
This is a great mobile phone. Although I wonder now that today will bring with it many thousands of new Evo 3D activations, if these OTA issues won't sent HTC off a cliff briefly. I am now about to install the Sprint Airave, for the full mobile experience. Good luck with your new Evo 3Ds...
If I'm not mistaken, which is possible since my 3vo is on it's way, the 2nd OTA is an App Update. The OTA should be accessible w/o the need of the 1st OTA. Or at least that is what I've heard while lurking on the forums. I would also like clarification on this from someone who has the OTAs, or just the 2nd OTA.
Thanks.
BTW 1st post. Time to bash the noob. 0_0

From one noob (who posted the original questions) to another! That is essentially my question. I would like to have access to the second app update OTA for Watch. But get this recent development: I just went a few moments ago to Settings/System Updates/HTC Software Update and did a check, I am NOW prompted that everything is up to date! In other words, NO OTAs are appearing. What is going on here I wonder? HTC must have pulled the OTA because of the bugs noted, so I guess I'll never see the 3D movie pre-installed. How will life go on?
Scratch that...

I tried the update again and indeed was just prompted to install the FOTA update 1.13.651.7 (26.59 MB). If I hit CANCEL, which I have done since getting the Evo 3D yesterday, that's that, no option to install the Watch App OTA update. Perhaps some of the learned folks here can help me in my confusion...
I think my usb/charging port is a bit loose. I was thinking about exchanging my 3D before my 30 days. I've resisted the urge to accept the OTA updates bc of the possible root exploit. Question is, if i do decide to exchange will the new phone come with all the OTA updates preinstalled? Or will i still be prompted to accept them once i boot and activate the phone. TIA
A: NO

I just exchanged mine today after I installed the OTA's a couple days ago. They gave me new phone in box, I told them NOT TO ACCEPT the OTA's when they activated it. I did get the prompt but declined it and turned off scheduled checks. So I'm back to original, no OTA's. Did this about 5 hours ago.
I don't know why you guys would be worried the exploit attacks the kernel which is the same regardless of whether you excepted the OTA or not. In other words the OTA does not contain a change in kernels to my knowledge. If it did someone will be along shortly to correct me.

My phone had legit issues, that's why I exchanged it but I'll hold off on OTA's on this one just in case. Kernels come in the form of OTA's, how else would they update on your phone? Please tell me you don't bring it in to sprint to update your kernel . Until it's fully rooted, with s-off, I'm not taking any updates. Phone works great out of box. Even green hornet 3d (need to get that the hell off there, waste of damn space)
And I'll quote you "to my knowledge" and "someone will be along shortly to correct me". I've just read enough to form this opinion. VERY WELL could be wrong.

Good but my point was the OTA did not bring a new kernel to my knowledge. Yes it is possible that HTC will close up the hole in the kernel in the future but as of now they haven't.
BTW Green Hornet is on your SDCard feel free to delete it when ever you like.
OK here's the issue, I really don't want to root my wife's tablet but I'm confused. I originally was able to put on the amazon app store and had no problem until the new update. I keep reading that if you were able to side load before the update it didnt change your settings. But every time I try all these new ways of doing it it doesn't work. So I really don't know why all these people are saying that these ways work cause I can't seem to get them to. Has anyone actually tried these on a never rooted nook that worked before the update changed. I don't mean to vent but I'm getting frustrated.

If you had apps sideloaded prior to the update to 1.4.1, they should still work. However, the actual update to 1.4.1 broke the ability to (easily) sideload. I've blocked OTA updates on my unit, and am staying at the 1.4.0 software because of this.
It is possible to roll back to 1.4.0, but it's not trivial to do.
Hey guys, I'm gonna be picking up a Razr either today or tomorrow to keep my unlimited data. I'm not new to rooting at all but I was wondering should I root it then wait for ICS in the next couple days (if it isn't available already) or should I just wait until after I update to ICS then root it and go from there? I've done a lot of searching but I'm a bit confused on which method to use to root it safely and most likely use safestrap, so would you guys be able to help point me in the right direction? I've already convinced myself that it is still definitely worth buying a Razr instead of a SIII because of the quality and my preferences even though it may be a few months old.
Thanks in advance!
I'm receiving a replacement RAZR Maxx by FedEx today. The phone I'm sending back has been rooted since I unboxed it and i successfully side loaded, and have been running ICS for the past two days.
I'll be banking on the official OTA to reach me this week or next and I'll probably 'limp along' with a stock, unrooted GB phone until it comes. After the OTA arrives I'll root, briefly consider a custom recovery - I find myself not dabbling much with custom roms so probably skip a custom recovery - and set up my apps that need root permissions.
For rooting after ICS, Matt's Utility v. 1.7 works without a hitch. I'll use it again. Just know that there's about 3 or 4 other methods available.
Thanks for the reply man, I'll probably end up doing the exact same thing as you. I just hope ICS doesn't take too long to get to me.
Thanks again.
