any way i have my phone rooted and running kaos froyo v24
what do i need to do to best try other roms, or just update to v30?
how do i flash ? - and how do i know when to do a full wipe? - and what does that entail(should i do a backup , and does the back up need to be on my computer,not my phone?)
could flashing other roms make my current one unstable?
and lastly .....will i lose all my apps and contacts and stuff with each flash or full wipe?
any clarification on these matters would be awesome.

This would be better placed in Q&A, but I will be happy to help you. All you need to do to flash another rom is what you did for the first one. To move up from one version of a rom to another, you don't need to wipe unless the instructions specify you to do so. But when in doubt, wipe. That is if you dont mind losing all of your saved data. But when going to a new rom, then wiping is a must. Yes, you will lose all apps and contacts for each wipe. No, your phone will not be unstable because of the flash, though if the rom has bugs then it could be. Hope this helps
I suggest installing titanium backup from the market. It allows you to save your current apps and data to be reinstalled on your new rom.
Before flashing a new rom, create a nandroid of your current rom by holding vol up + power. Scroll to backup/restore and create the nand. If for any reason you dont like the new rom, you can wipe data, dalvik, and ext (if your sd card is partitioned) and restore the nand. Your phone will be exactly like before.
To flash a new rom, save the file to the root of your sd card (not in any folder), do a wipe if your going to a new rom or if you have problems updating the old one, and flash the file you downloaded. If your updating the same rom the developer will tell you if you need to wipe or not.
FYI- Nands are saved on your sd card in the nandroid folder. You dont need to mess with them. When you restore, amon ra will look in that folder for you. Don't rename your recoveries like I did and render them useless.

And your contacts should be resynced when you flash a new rom as long as you're using Gmail and allowing it to backup.

My wife's phone started having major force close issues on CM7 #105 the other day so I decided to go back to stock and bring it back up to date with #142. I can get it back to stock no problem and root it too. When I try and put any other custom rom on it it will not boot. It just sits in a loop on the kernel screens. I tried 2.2 roms that had previously worked on it and even backed it all up and completely wiped the internal memory card. I am at a loss. It runs ok on the stock 2.1 rom. Obviously I would like to get it up to 2.2 or 2.3.4. I tried running Titanium backup on the stock rom to at least get her data back and it will load and start the backup then just lock trying to restore the first app. Has anyone else ever seen this?
have you cleared the mounts?
format cache, data and system ( under mounts and storage in CWM )

Yeah, I have cleared and cleaned about everything. Could it be a hardware problem?
I even go in and delete any folder, containing anything that had any possible data from rooting / flashing..
voodoo, downloads..
sometimes when having issues, I take out sim and Sd card when flashing

So, I was plodding along happily with CM7 on my Optimus One, then I decided to Nandroid backup and flash a CM9 alpha ROM here.
Once I wiped user data through amon_ra recovery, I flashed it and it worked fine (except I was on old baseband, so GSM didn't work).
When I decided to Nandroid back to what I had previously however, BAD THINGS HAPPENED.
All the user apps didn't show up in the app draw. All the widgets had a problem. The CM7 theme had vanished. Even the google apps had vanished.
I tried to reflash the Market but it didn't work and was still missing.
I was able to Nandroid back to the ICS alpha rom and it worked fine.
I then tried to restore the stock LG firmware through the official updater app. It refused to boot, getting stuck at the ANDROID logo.
I then had to manually flash Clockworkmod recovery through emergency mode. I then proceeded to Nandroid to my CM7 save. Which booted, but still had the same problems. (I flashed amon_ra from there so I could use my other backups)
All the normal functions work properly eg. Camera, USB, ADB, GSM, 3G, Data, web browsing.
I also noted that everything is sitting normally in the data partition when looking through ADB, but not through File Manager, is that normal?

Can't get it installed.
Well, it is installed, it's just unusable.
I can't get the Market so I can't try and install it.
And attempting to install it's APK with File Manager results in "Application not installed"
Okay, I seem to have figured it out, while I had this problem, my dalvik-cache was inaccessible as a folder. I deleted it in ADB and recreated it.
It was because when I wiped user data to flash ICS, it also wiped the SD-EXT partition, which my dlavik-cache was on, that was not backed up.
Hey. I have a Samsung galaxy tab 10.1 running aokp on 4.12 and when I go to download an app or game onto my tablet, it states that the storage is full and I need to clear some memory, however when looking into the storage information, my videos, photos, games, and apps only equals up to like 5GB out of a built in 16GB.

I think that your partitions are messed up, because the picture shows that only 123MB is left on your sdcard. restocking using Odin will help, if you don't mind losing your data, of course. you can backup your data before restocking, though...
some same case has happened to me: I was running stock ICS, then flashed Ubuntu touch, and that repartiitoned my tab, I then flashed paranoid CM 10.1 ROM and now I have to erase data that won't be shown from my device using ADB...

1. pull all your critical data off of /data/media as best you can (you can do this in CWM using 'adb pull data/media/' or boot in to android and use MTP, or backup your apps with titanium backup and no data will be lost. (STORE ALL YOUR BACKUPS ON YOUR PC OR YOU'LL ALSO WIPE YOUR BACKUPS & DATA)
2. wipe all your /data in CWM or Stock Recovery
3. check if your partitions are fixed now (most likely, you'll have ~13 Gb free memory)
4. move your backups and data back to your tablet and restore it

1. You can just wipe stock slot and install CM on it. You have to do it fresh and not restore a backup from another slot.
2. Why do you need to edit your build.prop?

1. Is there another way to take space from the default slot and give it to the CM slot without having to reset it?

1. No, stock slot, is stock slot... all of that is predetermined space of the partition... If you have titanium backup Pro and a custom launcher... all you will really lose is time. Make sure you are saving to ext. sd just to be safe, backup your user apps, backup again for modified data, and you are fine. For the custom launcher, save your setup. After you flash over, restore. Depending on what/how much you have it could take a couple hours... some games that require extra data, you will still have to download it but, your progress should still be there. Double check if it is a game, as some of them only save via a cloud.
2. I may be ignorant to your particular situation/apps, but, if your previous device was a an android device, and you saved your contacts to your google I.D. they should be waiting for you, when you reactivate from the wipe/flash. When I got my first droid years ago, I was coming from a crappy flip phone from att, they were able to flash my conacts from the att sim over to my new droid. All my contacts are now saved via google.. so it doesn't matter what phone I boot up.. my contacts are waiting for me.

Keep slot 1 and it's backup til you have the stock slot the way you want it. That way, if you forgot something, you still have what you need til you figure out what you missed and it isn't gone for good.
When you do your wipes DO NOT TOUCH internal storage and micro SDcard... that is all your personal data.. there is where your backups are... you wipe them your screwed.. pictures.. music, all of it is gone, and no one can help you!

I've done what you've said, booted on to the stock ROM, and it's been on the CM boot screen for an hour, I still have the CM installed on stock ROM 1, what would've caused this problem?

Lol.. now you know why you wanted to keep slot 1. Either the stock ROM didn't get fully wiped, the CM11 didn't install properly, or it was a bad download.
So. Just a recap, you are using safestrap 3.65 or higher. When you did your wipe, did you just factory reset, or did you go into advanced wipe and wiped Dalvik cache, android secure, data, cache, and system? The CM thread recommends advanced wipe, and doing it three times!

OK, I am gonna just start from the absolute beginning again:
I am flashing the Razr back to factory default with RSD Lite... Complete
Booting into the stock Android installation... Complete
Rooting device with RazrBlade... Complete
Installing Safestrap V3.65... Complete
Rebooting into Safestrap recovery... Complete
Wiping ROM Slot 1 3 times, wiping the same as 2 steps below... Complete
ADB Push CM onto /sdcard/
Install and configure CM on ROM Slot 1 as a fallback...Complete
Advanced wipe Stock slot 3 times, wiping the Dalvik cache, Android secure, data, cache, and system, this is where I messed up... Complete
Install and configure CM on Stock slot...Complete

Not stupidity. Ignorance (for lack of a better word... look up the true meaning if you are taking offense.)
And just so you know, you probably went through a few extra more steps than you needed too. Stock wasn't damaged, just needed to be thoroughly wiped then reinstalled. Also if you had a backup of Slot one, after you did the firmware reflash with RSD then root and recovery, you could have just restored your slot 1 backup.. same thing, less time. Just a couple of tips.
It is certainly good that you aren't afraid to just reflash a fresh firmware though, that can solve a lot more problems than you think. Hone your searching skills, and you are golden
