Hey galaxy s2'ers!!
I am the owner of a HTC HD2 that has been my pride and joy for a long time. However recently its mini-USB port and GPS broke/failed on me and I decided to move on.
I'm looking for a phone I can keep for a couple of years and it must have decent camera, battery life and good GPS reception. Games/3D performance tends to be rather secondary to me.
I checked with my carrier and I can get a brand new 16GB Galaxy S2 for about 200€. There is a more or less similar question to this one here in the forum but do tell me what you think: is the GS2 a good buy these days and for this price?
Thank you!
Yes.Buy 10 of them, keep 1 and stick the other 9 on eBay-youll make a killing.Ones with broken screens sell for that!

I actually like Nexus' slight curvature on the frontal plane but the lack of expansion ports is a deal breaker..
Thanks for the input guys
But whats the total cost/contract.I only buy new unbranded ones and get a sim deal separately. It works out more but I can put it through my business.
Is your deal the phone and minutes etc for the 200 euros.
If it is then buy as much as you can, stick em on eBay and chuck the sims

You bet, it is! I just bought a SGS2 4 months for now, and I am completely satisfied and overwhelmed with it. It has the best package for an Android phone. Tons of modifications depending on your taste, and a very powerful hardware that can run almost every app & games. The only phone I would consider to replace my SGS2 is non other han its successor.
Reference: I've constantly checked other Android phones to compare, but nothing beats this beast from what I see.
Go for S III, or Nexus or S II,
If you want to fully Customise your device go for SII or SIII
If not, other variants of S II Like S II X or HD LTE SGH - I757M have greater Hardware 1.5 Ghz i think.

Samsung already denied the rumors of S4. It's waste of time to wait for it, go for the Galaxy Nexus if you care for updates and wants to use stock rom.
You still reading this?
Than go for Galaxy SII. :good:

You bet I'm still here: thanks for the input guys! I'm having a meeting with my carrier agent - or whatever you call it - to discuss what phone I'll be getting: I share a professional plan with other colleagues so I get to chose a new phone for a low cost from time to time.. hence the 200€ :victory:
don't worry about sgs2, it definitely worth the money since this great phone beat iphone 4s last year. if you are looking for more budget android smartphone, get sgs2 since the price drop a lot since the launch of sgs3. well, if you can afford sgs3, i will recommend it. :good:
i have been using my sgs2 for almost 6 months now, i wanna say that i am more happy to continue to be with my baby. sgs2 get most of the android update, and i just flash a jelly bean ROM.
sgs2 is more easier to root, to customize, to tweak compare to HTC (where you need the whatever S-OFF thing). i almost kill my friend HTC phone by just trying to S-OFF it. stupid bootloader.
conclusion, if you want cheaper, daily use phone, you can go for sgs2. if you want newer phone, get sgs3 or galaxy note 2.:good: just get samsung phone, you get tonnes of tutorials, guides here.

There has been 1 week since I bought my Galaxy S2 and I'm telling you. I love every bit of it. EVERYTHING. The camera, the screen, design, the UI and everything. Having said that, though the reason why I'm in love with it is maybe because my older phone was only a Samsung Galaxy Mini.
i don't know about you, but I think you can't get a better phone with that price (200€). I got mine for €220 and I don't regret any cent spent on it.
worth all that money and much more.
good for you ^^ enjoy every bit of it. like my s2. i am still not bored of it since JB is here for s2 as well ^^
Hi Guys,
I'm due for an upgrade in a few weeks time and I'm currently on a Samsung Galaxy S2, I don't really want to go to the S3 as I don't think it's enough of an upgrade. Is there something else I should be waiting for?
Cheers
No matter what you buy, never consider a Motorola, especially one with a locked bootloader.

Bump.
Upgrade due in a week, would be great if I need to hang on for the much rumoure new Nexus?
I believe the HTC One X is supposed to be being re-released state side with a quad core. I would definitely be holding out for a quad core.
Speaking as a nexus one owner who went to a galaxy s2 I'd highly recommend you hold off for the next nexus. You'll love being a nexus owner for many reasons. Trust me...

That is the top dog. LG has a quad core out as well, but I have a hard time recommending an LG.
Hi guys, Thanks for the replies.
I'm thinking I might wait till the next Nexus line up I'm just concerned on when they'll be available as I don't really want to wait till xmas before my new phone, whens the likely release date for the UK is that info out yet because I can't find anything searching on the net.
Butchr - I'm similar whilst the LG looks good, it's an LG
I'm planning to buy my first Android phone and I've chose then Samsung Galaxy S2. But what i'm unsure of, is that after investing a substantial amount of money (its still expensive in my country) will it be good enough to handle updates beyond JB for the coming two years? or will it be outdated soon and should i rather go for the s3? Need help! Thanks
S2 is still very good device!
IMO it is worth to buy it.

The sgs2 is at the end of its support life if we get jelly bean I'll be ecstatic.. But we will not get anything else.. And we will not get the full source code to enable a proper realise of a newer Android OS.
The sgs3 may be short lived as the sgs2 is whispered to come in April..

You're from India, right? Right now there's about a 12K price difference between the S2 and S3. So I'm assuming price will play a pretty big part in deciding on a phone. The S2 as of now probably has the most support amongst all android phones while the s3 support is comparatively still in a nebulous stage. Having said that, most devs who're working on the S2 now seem to slowly be moving towards the S3..So S3 dev support will only improve with time. The S2 is definitely getting the next iteration of android. But that'll probably be it. So it should be good for the next couple of years at the very least. but beyond that..who knows. Its like comparing the where the s2 is now to the galaxy s.
If your pocket allows it, go with the s3, else the s2 is still right up there with the best IMO.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
Its like this. If you want a good phone where you can do anything one can do, and still not be very expensive, go for the S2. You can do everything with that phone. No limitations whatsoever. Good camera, good looking, not so big, and very smooth with enough space for installing apps.
If you want an awesome phone and expensive one, go for the S3, but you would still find everything you do on S3 also in S2. No major differences in there, except the price.
And I am sure with the latest and upcoming Jelly Bean update the S2 will become and even better phone. I really hope that they will also update it with the latest TouchWiz 5 UX Nature interface. If Samsung does that, I will not envy my father for having an S3 at all.
I have both phones in my home and the only major differences between S2 and S3 are on the interface, and the display. S3 has a much much better display and the latest TouchWiz interface is very cool.
Hope I helped in your decision.
Thanks Haxtream, Agonn that really helped. One last question! The HTC One S is from the same category as the S2 right? But in India HTC is lauching it with S3 snapdragon processor overclocked at 1.7ghz instead of the new S4 Krait architecture chip. Its only 3k more than the S2, and since its launched with ICS I'm assuming it will get updates beyond JB.. is it a good option? overclocked processors won't heat up much right?
I can say now in newest google android version we cannot to do customs roms because its some custiminazion center... sorry if my bad english
Send form Galaxy S2. Using XDA Premium
Can't say I know much about the One-S but what I do know is that the dev support for it is pretty weak. More so if you compare it to the S2's. I'm assuming its mainly coz of HTCs locked boot loader which they're still trying to work around. Might improve in the future, but you never know.
Another thing is with this whole system of using different chipsets in some countries. It leads to a lot of chaos and confusion if you're into flashing custom ROMs and the like. For proof, just look up the number of people who have managed to flash an i9100 rom on their i9100G phone and bricked it. (If you do go the S2 way, be wary of shops trying to pass off an i9100G in an i9100 box.happened to me.)
Finally..I don't know how it is in Kolkata but here there are barely any HTC service centres.so any problem with the phone means you're stuck for ages. Samsungs service centres are a dime a dozen here. Didn't like the way the fellows were behaving in one service centre so next time I had an issue went to another one literally 500mts away.
Will it get support beyond JB? Who knows? These companies are incredibly cagey about releasing info on releases and since it won't be their latest model nor a past flagship (that I guess is the One-X) I wouldn't count on an upgrade..leave alone a quick one.

Now this is turning into an essay so forgive me. But regarding the overclocked processor. Extreme overclocking does equal more heat. But if the company is releasing it that way itself it should be alright.
I know the S4 chip does..not so sure about the S3 chip. Atleast one of them uses the 28nm manufacturing process. AFAIK the i9100 chips' is 45nm. A smaller manufacturing process theoretically atleast, should produce lesser heat even if overclocked.

Hi, if you want long term support for new android go for google nexus, if possible. The first nexus (very old phone) got JB while we are still waiting for SII official JB, and i'm starting to worry if it will ever arrive.
Cheers!
Sent from my GT-I9100 using ICS.
Nexus gets all the latest updates because it is mainly a Google designed product made by Samsung and Google doesn't have other phones to update as far as I am concerned, I so it's easier for them to only update one device than it is for Samsung who have hundreds of devices to work on updating.
It's not because the S2 is inferior to Nexus cause it has probably even better specs and a much better camera, 8MP, while Nexus only has a 5MP camera.
If you are okay with using custom made Roms than you should definitely choose the Samsung Galaxy S2. There are some truly amazing custom ROM's out there in which you'll be able to run Jelly Bean very good and overclock/underclock your phone to up to 1600MhZ and still have not so much overheating problems.
As for HTC one S, and I don't really know much about it. A friend of mine has a HTC one X and he likes it veryI much. Ive had that phone in hand and it was good amazing screen but too expensive. I would suggest you to get the S2 until a much better phone comes out and you make the money to buy it. Cheers.

One last question, This will be my first android phone, So lets say I won't be flashing new roms' on the ONE S with the s3 chip, will simple rooting be also a problem?
IMO just getting root access on any phone should be pretty simple, the best place to get that answer would be the One S forum dude.. people who have and use the phone will be best placed to tell you how easy or difficult it is. Unless someone here has that phone as well or has rooted it for someone else, you wouldn't get a firsthand opinion (for want of a better term)

Hello..
I have zeroed in on the Samsung Galaxy S2 SGH-i777 phone as my next upgrade and would like to get it off US Ebay. (Basically a mint pre owned piece.)
I am from India and hence i have few queries.
1) Is there any chance the Exynos chipset might not be present in any random Samsung Galaxy S2 SGH-i777 ?
I remember its counterpart phone in India also had an alternate version. Hence want to confirm.
2) What's the scenario regarding the service carrier maligning issue? I heard about it few weeks back.. no idea about current scene.
I am basically looking for the US counterpart of SAMSUNG I9100 GALAXY S II, which was released here in India.

Answer his question or don't respond.
1. If it doesn't have exynos chipset, then it's not an I777
2. Talk to your local carrier, we can't provide you this information
If you find out the other information and decide the I777 will in your area, I'd wait a few weeks. The used prices will probably go lower with the Nexus 4 release.
@jthatch12
Thing is, this phone was never released in my country. So i can only glean as much info possible via user response, regarding the gen scenario on the whole. Hence i asked
I ll try to seek the second query's response by more efficient / diligent searching.

I honestly did gave it a serious thought.. but:
1) LG brand is holding me back.
2) Limited storage/No mem card slot (something which does irks me)
3) It ll be glass on both sides. More chances of the compulsion to use it in a case.
4) I am not too big a fan of massive screens.. (barely convinced myself to go wee bit beyond the 4inch real estate)
India uses GSM so it'll definitely work with your carrier, I'm from Kenya and I used the phone without any issues, only thing is when you do get the phone you'll have to downgrade it to Gingerbread in order for sim unlock tools downloadable from play store to actually work, as most that are sold are. Also AOSP is full of issues if you plan on flashing CM10/AOKP but Samsung ROMS should perform beautifully and with expected 4.1 its a good buy, though I sold mine for Nexus 4

You already got many responses from others, I just chip in a bit.
1. If it's legitimated product made for AT&T, then it is, would be, have to be Exynos.
As for the counterfeit part? Seriously, nobody know. We just simply cannot check.
2. Depends on your end, if it has GSM network then it would work, however, depends on the frequency they operate, you might only get 3G speed and not take full advantage of the 4G (H+) one.
@votinh
err.. no counterfeiting thing.. i mentioned counterpart
Thank you for the other valuable info in your post.
We have two versions of S2 floating in India. One has the Exynos chipset, the other ( i9100G) seems to be having a slightly inferior SOC.
While purchasing here, one can be aware of the model no for both G as well as non-G with due diligence and adequate research regarding the stickers on the box mentioning the details. The G model does have a noticeably weaker GPU in the form of SGX 540.
I got concerned after hearing that the model i9100G does not have too much love from the development community simply because it is not available widely & in most territories (it probably is only available in asia pacific countries only)
To ask another query.. and this might be vague..
What's the future of the S2 phone.. both in terms of official and custom ROM releases..?
It surely has the firepower under the hood to go some decent distance i think.. but with all these quad core based phones now making an appearance.. will the official rom be made to order for advanced configurations..??

Seems to me, the S2 is on its way out, if it hasn't already been officially discontinued. If I were buying a new phone, I would get the most recent model possible, because the rate at which new models are introduced.
Also, what is your discomfort with LG?
Honestly the Nexus 4 is a scrub phone compared to the i777

something worth taking note... is the i777 can take a serious beating. much more than any other phone i have come in contact with. it will scar and mar. the metal band will take on some serious gashes and the screen will stay unharmed. it is the only reason i still have this phone and have not upgraded.
that being said... if speed is what you want, buy something else. this is 2010 tech after all.
Please help me to choose. Do not suggest another phone because I dont have another choice. I am doubting LG build quality, battery duration and tegra 3 xda support. And in Samsung galaxy s2 plus I am doubting in old technology and I dont know how it stands in openes of drivers and all for future android releases. And it must live two years at least.
If it was your choice what would you choose and why.
thanks in advance
ps. my old and tired and beat up motorola defy just refuse to give up
I would check out and compare the developments between these 2 devices, which have more support from rom/ kernel developers. If you want your device to survive through years, a good support of development is certainly important.
I would personally recommend the galaxy s2, but that's just a personal reference. Ive just found that samsung devices are more reliable and their software is much more vibrant and user friendly than LG.
