[Q] i9300 KernELs...? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

There are a plethora of kernals available for the i9300 but being a bit of a noob I'm wondering what the differences and benifits are in each...coding, features or otherwise?
I have personally being using WanamLite 4.1.2 roms for the past 8months or so, recently updating from LLA Tto MB5. And about two weeks before updating I switched from Siyah 1.8.9 to Boeffla 2.7-2.8 and personally found that battery life was improved. I'm still running Boeffla on MB5 however Wanam has now released his Adam kernal. I know other kernal are available but what are differences as I mentioned above.
Any info would be great guys.
Cheers
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2

The differences are:
-battery life (as you've said) for kernels like phenomenal, hydrx-d (for example)
-sound improvements for kernels like boeffla
-speed
various kernels work differently on various sgs3's so just test em and choose which one you like more

Ahh ok I was wondering why I couldn't find much on this topic.
I'm not looking to be told which is the best or any form of heads up between kernals.
It's just often I see 'tweaked'. So I was hoping to find out in what way each kernal is tweaked and how will this affect things.
Just plain facts so people can make up their own mind.
Thought it would be good to have a centralised location for a discussion that covers this.

Re: [Q] i9300 Kernals...?
It's worth having a really in depth look at the kernel threads, and following links to ie. Governors explained, and stuff like that, it takes a while to get to grips with it, but then half the fun is going through the learning process, finding the facts, building the picture, gaining understanding, the main point to note I'd that most custom kernels come with fully functioning and optimized default set up, so you don't need to do anything initially giving you tinge to figure out how all the functions effect performance.
As always reading lots is the key

We have had that and it just gets into a my kernel is bigger then your kernel post .
Good idea then PM a mod and put it to them .
I will give my opinion none is better they are all much the same performance wise on SGS3 .

I've been reading the kernal posts for a bit now but the definition of tweaks etc seemed a bit vague.
Regarding the governors I agree, I had read up on these when i had my i9100. And currently trying pegasusq speedmod on the s3 to see how that pans out. Cheers though I'll read up on these a little more.
I thought the moderators would of kept the post in check to stop the whole competition scenario.
Was only hoping for an explanation and as I said some facts, thinking it would of been good for the forum and useful for other i9300 owners.

To be honest if you want stuff explaining then most people would, if willing, go of and link you to threads or copy paste stuff, the best thing is read the last 20 pages of each thread, gives a good idea of performance/stability etc
The moderators simply don't have time to wipe everyone's bums and owing to the over proliferation of adolescent hormones and board room egos here, these threads always go badly wrong!

If the users of this forum followed the rules then their would be room for such a kernel thread providing someone is willing to update it daily .
However as users do not follow the rules the forum is a clogged up mess .
Guess how many multiple what kernel posts would still be posted after such as topic was stickied many many as many users prefer to post instead of read sadly .
But as i said PM a dev with your idea .
jje

Re: [Q] i9300 Kernals...?
Not being a dev myself. My idea was to have a centralised location, here, where the kernal dev's could state exactly what they had tweaked and possibly what the benefits are.
So many kernals seem to offer the same features, but nothing really gets down to the nity grity.
 Slaphead, in hindsight I can totally see where your coming from and why this wouldn't work => end up in a cat fight over why things are good and why they're bad / who's right and who's wrong.

Go try for yourself ROM 1.1 and wow people are ignorant kernel 2.6.
EDIT: PUTTING HELPFUL STUFF HERE?
Each persons use and what the expect of the phone is different. If you have wakelocks keeping your phone awake due to a rogue app, you will have less of a battery life than others. Asking people what they use is like asking what browser they use. Some might be better than others but it depends on what you like and what you are used to.
Oh and if something makes a difference, look at the amounts of thanks compared to the # of posts... and he even has a "GIVE ME THANKS" sig.... If you have to ASK for thanks, something is wrong with you.
Entropy512s kernel is basically legendary for how good it is. I've read people love 12/8, and 2/07 I believe and a few others. I use his latest.
I've read Siyah is good too, people claim better battery live on 2.6.8 and 2.6.9.
I wouldn't say either is "best" but I prefer Entropys. It's smooth and comes with CWM verses the, I believe, redpill in Siyah.
Sent from my SGH-I777 using Tapatalk
Kernel alone has little to do with battery life. There are so many factors affecting battery usage that the premise of your question is worthless and is the reason these kinds of threads get closed. They serve no purpose. As was said, try them for yourself because that's the ONLY way you will find what works best for you, your phone and the way you use it. There are no shortcuts in this regard.

Just try them and decide yourself. In my opinion, the best car in the world is the Lancia Integrale I currently drive, the best kernel is Siyah which I'm currently using, but many people disagree with me on both counts.

Fine but we will have yet another post asking exactly the same tomorrow and the day after and the day after to join the list of five thousand posts already asking the same question .
We would be far better off with a kindergarten section for repetitive posts .
jje
The reason we have threads dedicated to kernels is so that you can click on those threads and read what people are saying about them. From there, you flash the kernel and you watch how your phone behaves for a day or two. At this point, you come back to the kernel thread and make a post about your experience.
Creating threads asking for people to do this for you is lazy but it also doesn't really work. Why? Because your device couple with your usage patterns will be different than the 6 people who actually reply to your thread with random kernel recommendations. Making this post and the hundreds we get exactly like it COMPLETELY POINTLESS AND A WASTE OF SPACE. If you're too lazy to read/search and make up your own mind, XDA might not be for you.

Which development area?

Hi just got s2 today exchanged desire HD. Going to root on Monday but noticed there are 3 development areas for this phone how do I know which one is for my phone?
Thanks, PS while I'm here which ROM is recommended and why
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2
Regarding which rom:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1612881
As for the 3 development. Check about phone under settings. Make sure you have the i9100 instead of the i9100G. If you have the i9100G, there is only 1 development section.
If you have the i9100, just check out the other 2 development sections.

Put it this way mate...
His answer is actually right. Your usage pattern, mine, and his are unlikely to be the same. Taste as well. Therefore best ROM discussion is a moot point.
On different sub forum, he mentioned that you should take precautions differentiating I9100 and I9100G. If you need additional explanation, please read the sticky thread in the Original Dev sub-forum stating the difference.
My last note, don't write anything when you're emotional. It will just backfire.
Note to OP - acting like a **** won't get you the help/info you're after. On the contrary, I'd be surprised if you get much help after that. Kaze asked a valid question.
The 3 development sections have nothing to do with anything re: rooting your phone (or anything else for that matter).
You need to start with something easy by the looks of things, might want to read the Stickies. No roms are recommended. Asking for rom recommendations is the height of laziness. Try a bunch of roms out until you find one you like the same as everyone else.

Note to you, sell your S2 and get a iPhone or Nokia 3310.
When your new to a forum or should I say a part of a forum your there looking for help. I.e. the whole point of a forum.
I know that trying roms out is a personal preference but it is quite nice to have a couple of opinions to start out but hey that was clearly too hard to do.
This is meant to be a question and answers area so asking questions is what is meant to happen. What is the point in having a forum if no one is wiling to have a discussion about things.
Only seen this kind of attitude in certain places, quite sad really

Plenty of discussions going on.
well put it this way I just read the thread pl4sma told me to read and I'm still not really much clearer why there are 2 sub forums in development area, and by the looks of it I'm not the only one confused so that is a valid question.
The second part I was simply asking for opinions rather than flashing consistently to find what I want. I find as you use the phone you realise which bits are best and change ROM based on that, when you initially start using you don't really know which one to try so it is nice to get opinions and maybe base your first try on what others think.
You have to remember that everyone starts out new and its over time you work things out. Doesn't mean people should be flamed instantly. Search doesn't always give desired results.
Plus if people don't want to answer things over and over then surely they can simply choose not to respond

One is original development the other uses bits and pieces from other devs to build the roms . How to tell as usual its in the stickies .

The what is best rom is banned due to the thousands of exact same posts and the fact that users and their needs are different .
The what is the simplest rom for me to start learning how to flash SGS2 is an acceptable type of question .
You have to remember that everyone starts out new and its over time you work things out. Doesn't mean people should be flamed instantly. Search doesn't always give desired results.
No but you normal read the rules followed by the stickies faqs and guides first .
Plus it was you that started the bad behaviour with your reply to the first valid answer you received .
Plus if people don't want to answer things over and over then surely they can simply choose not to respond
Its the ones who refuse to read and ask the same stuff over and over that dont really belong as they just take .

Thanks for another decent reply, I understand the differences now and is really all that was needed. As you can see from the original question the ROM part was at the end but having a start point would have been nice.
problem I had with first reply is they probably took more time to find the link they did then it would of taken to answer the question.
This discussion would have ended there and then, but instead giving such an unhelpful response caused all of this.

Please do yourself a favor and do some research before you even think about doing what you are thinking about doing.
Once you start reading and ask relevant questions, people will answer you better. Even if you haven't tried it yet, and you ask questions that occur only after having read about it, people will start pointing you in the right direction.

KH7 and KK6 are basically the same and run fine everywhere except the Loop and O'Hare, where the data doesn't work at all.
I recently tried out LC5 by accident and it turns out that works great in O'Hare and the Loop, but is very spotty everywhere else. I should probably go through the others but that would require a free weekday in the Loop.

If it's stock-like GB you're looking for, I've heard great things about Unnamed and UnOriginal.
OP, these threads are highly discouraged in this forum. I encourage those who think the OP does not deserve such flaming, please read more, you'll see that if you did, vs. threads or "which is best" threads are not allowed.
Btw, the person who posted the kernel tests thread, #1, that thread is I9100 and our I777s are different, #2, each person's I777 is different and reacts to different kernels differently, so that thread is practically useless to us.

FAQ
Q Why a special Q&T Thread for a specific ROM??
A The bigger a ROM development thread gets, the greater the chance that posts are being placed in this thread that are not related to the ROM development itself, e.g. problems with flashing, installation, bugs, things not working etc. However this is understandable, it's not according to the guidelines of XDA for Development sections. Therefore the main goals of the ROM specific Q&T threads is to avoid this cluttering of the original develpment thread with these OT posts by redirecting the posters to the ROM specific Q&T thread and also to relieve the developer from answering these post, so he can dedicate his time to developing.
Q How to move my post to the Q&A/T thread?
A Copy the text of your post in the dev's thread, got to the Q&A/T thread and paste it there. After having done that, go back to the dev's thread, edit your post and change the text into: moved to Q&A/T thread, preferably accompanied with a link to this thread.
Q When I'm asked to move my post to the Q#A/T thread, do I have to do that?
A When you're asked to move your post, there will always be given an explanation by the OP of the Q&A/T, e.g. your post is not development related (f.i. SD card problems, etc), so please be so kind to move your post. If you want to help the dev to keep his original thread as clean as possible from OT posts, then the answer is, of course, YES. Although we cannot force you to move your post, it's highly recommended to do so
Q Where can I download this ROM and How do I install?
A You can find the link to download and installation instructions HERE. Pay close attention to this post, everything required for a successful flash is listed right here. If you fail to follow the instructions or meet the requirements for installation, you could run into some problems.
Q What are the known issues with these ROM's?
A See THE Developer's thread:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2366675
Q How’s battery life?
A I see this question asked repeatedly across all ROMS. Honestly there is no way to give you an answer based on a ROM. There are too many variables in question and results vary from user to user and device to device. Battery life is going to depend on age and condition of your battery, your use habits with your device, installed apps, tweaks, settings, etc...
Q How do I...
A Ask your questions and report your issues in this thread. You will receive a response and hopefully get you back up and running this ROM to it's fullest
Explaining the purpose of our Q&A/T threads for specific ROM's to posters.
"Hi dear followers of this ROM,
in this post I will explain the goal of this specific thread created for this ROM with the permission of the Developer of this specific ROM.
This is a statement made in the Q&A/T template thread:
"While our forum has slowly been morphing, the one area we would like to keep original is Development
The goal is to alleviate the OT banter that occurs within any rom. While the XDA forum continues to grow, we need to help users work within the guidelines created by XDA. Over the last couple of years the average rom being created, has become a free for all chat thread. There tends to be much infighting and mod/developer cleaning.
The idea of this template is to create a Questions and Answers for each rom. This is in no way asking for Development to be moved here, rather any and all conversation that is non Development related to your conjoined Q&A."
This means that non-development related posts, should be posted - with the permission of the Dev - in this thread. What are the most common Off Topic posts, that should be posted in this Q&A/T thread?
1. Battery life related posts
2. Will this app work with this ROM
3. SD Card related problems
4. How do I dowmload and install this ROM, etc, etc
Hope to have given you enough information,
kindest regards, Kuzibri
Thanks to kuzibri once again for the thread! Reserved for a FAQ

Hello amazeguy! Yes I can help you with that. The reason you got a Wifi error is because the stock and faux 24 kernel have different modules and files.
I do humbly apologize for the inconvenience as of right now I'm going to put the stock kernel back into all my roms since it's better battery life. However, with the faux kernel users are able to underclock and undervolt via system tuner or other CPU apps.
If you want faux to be the same as the stock kernel, just clock it down slightly to 1.5ghz instead of the default 1.7ghz over clock that faux had. You can go down to 1.2ghz or even 1ghz depending on the settings or governor. I use on demand for good battery and performance. Conservative is the best for battery but it could be slow since it keeps the CPU slow. But I haven't had this problem when I uses conservative as my CPU governor. interactive is ondemand but with more performance, less battery. Finally, performance locks the CPU in the highest clock (draining the battery fast) and it doesn't go down. The performance governor isn't recommended.
Chevy and I are working on aroma he is helping me out a lot. I am sorry for not updating fast. Hang in there buddy!

Hey aakash I have two JB style roms, Kaioken and Shockwave. I don't know if it supports MHL or not. It should if the amaze already supports it. Battery life should be as good if now slightly better than speed rom because I removed a lot of apps and bloatware. Even more than speed rom.

its jellycream kinda fussion which eclipzeremix started ! but i loved jellybean 4.2.2 it just awesome but then i hate amaze for bad battery !!! else i'd have kept dark glass as my daily driver !:crying:
I love how the discussion is flowing now.
To be honest all my roms are senseless and disguised as something else to make it fast . They all have faux 24 pre-installed too!
And yes Kaioken is basically the red speedrom. That's the idea of it.
To be honest I'm not the best dev here, my specialty is theming.
I do have annoying issues, on my themed roms, there is white text on white buttons . I'll probably have to ask Justin lamantia
What I'm going to do is just get a new base and rebuild some or most of my roms with the stock kernel. It is shameful and frustrating that some things don't work properly, Wifi calling still doesn't work right on any Rom except ARHD lol.
I'm just glad everything is working on Kaioken thank god that's a relief.

NEW UPDATE coming out right now. It has the stock kernel which should help in some ways... I am going to implement AROMA now for 3.0, and for all my ROMS if it works great on this one!

Okay people come to the Super Sense thread I updated it, it now has AROMA on 2.0!!!!!
You will enjoy this build. After this one I will fuse the Wifi Calling patch into the Rom so people won't complain about Wifi calling not working on T-mobile.
If there are any problems left on this rom, (are there any?), I will put this Rom to rest and revamp the rest of my roms, including FireRom, Kaioken, and Shockwave.
By that time school will start so my development time will be severely hampered. I will struggle to get this all done very soon!
If you have anymore ideas post stuff on this thread! It's a Q&A thread with OT so you can post freely! (Obviously don't break xda rules though.) To all the hiding people/lurkers, come on make an account, and if you have made an account already, you can come out of the closet now lol. In other words, START POSTING!
