[Q] What are files I can delete to free up space? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
In the past few weeks, I have been getting the "Internal space on phone is getting low" message. I have just rooted my phone and installed ES File Explorer File Manager. I noticed that in /data/log (5311 files, 1.61GB large), I have probably thousands of files named "dumpstat_rilreset_<datetime>.log files, each ~300KB large. The date started from when I first got the phone 7 months ago. I also have dumpstate_app_anr.txt.gz, dumpstate_app_error.txt.gz, dumpstate_app_native.txt.gz, and also a folder "z7logs" containing files named android-logs-<date>-<time>-vvv.zip, dating from about 4 days ago.
What are these dumpstate files, and is it safe for me to delete them? Most importantly, will I get back my internal phone storage space after deleting them so I don't keep getting the messages? What are some other files that I could delete to get more space?
Thank you!

To free up space you can delete the cache of your applications, they are usually about 60 Mb for every app. And for that dumpstat files, it's safe to delete them. I had the same problem and after cleaning the cache the irritating message disappeared.

Is there an app that will delete all cache for all the apps in the phone?

When you say deleting the cache of applications, do you mean the "Clear Cache" option in Settings -> Applications -> Manage Applications -> <Application name>?
I also see the folder /data/dalvik-cache. Is that also some application cache and is it safe to delete too?

try download clean master from store. it good app to clean cache

You probably want to avoid delete your Dalvik cache folder. Ever noticed how slow the first boot after you clear it in recovery, or when you do a completely clean install of a rom is ? That's the cache rebuilding & is what will happen everytime you reboot if you continually delete that folder/its contents.
Why not get an external SD card (even an 8GB; cheap as chips) & move some of your apps/their data, music, etc to it if space is a continual problem ?

Thanks for the advice. I'll hold off deleting the Dalvik cache folder since I just free'd up 1.6GB of space from deleting the logs.
The problem with the phone is that only 2GB of RAM is allocated to the apps/logs etc. I already have my music stored on the other 11GB of RAM (I guess the remaining is used by the OS), and I didn't have that many apps installed to begin with. After deleting the logs and reinstalling all the apps I deleted, I'm only using 300MB of the space. And within hours of deleting the logs, another 1MB of logs were stored. I guess I'll have to regularly delete them to free up the space.
BTW, I just installed App Cache Cleaner and it seems to be doing a good job clearing the cache from all my apps at once.

APPS2SD

Ok, I know this has been asked many times in various different formats but I am writing this because I haven't found a definitive answer.
I am using MCR 3.0. My SD card is partitioned correctly. I have 18 apps installed which has left me with 105mb available on internal storage.
From what I have read, people that say APPS2SD work, have 100's of apps installed and are sitting on about 120mb available on internal.
So, I can only assume that APPS2SD isn't doing what it's supposed to.
So my question is, is having 105mb free on internal with 18 apps installed normal?
Can someone please confirm the correct order to do things. Lets assume I am rooted and have recovery and just bought a new SD card and I want to install MCR 3.0. What is the order to do things? Partition card 1st? Install MCR 1st? Wipe (What wipe)?
Thanks in advance
I have 85mb of internal left with apps2sd. I think each program must put something onto the internal memory as. I maybe wrong, but what other explanation is there?
Bear in mind though that peep, google maps, browser, email all use space with their cache. Try clearing them all see if you regain any more memory..
P.S i have about 140 apps installed.
At one point I had 507 apps installed on my phone with 35Mb free.........
I have since cleared it down and now have 74 installed with 85Mb free. So yes, it seems there are still SOME files that are loaded to the phone.

Mmm yes thats what i thought too...
So it would seem I'm ok with only 18 apps installed and 105mb free? I don't have google maps or any really big apps installed so I still think that I should have more free space on internal.
It kind of sucks a bit if apps2sd still stores info on internal memory. My last phone was a diamond and it was simple, you had the choice of where you wanted to install apps (internal or sd), would be handy with the hero.
I have about 110 apps installed and 35mb free. I see no problem with my Hero yet, maybe I'm just lucky!?
But, as a customer I'd like to see a phone were I take the SIM and memory card with me to a new phone and nothing changes. I mean iPhone comes close to this with OTA updates, but SERIOUSLY, this is how Linux is supposed to work, right!? Your home directory is where ever you wan't it to be and whatever happens to the system is irrelevant. So I wonder what Google did to complete **** UP with this idea in Android
Come on.. all I wan't is to take my SIM and memory card to a new phone and everything should be just like in the old phone!! Technically this is trivial!
whenever a application is installed, it will generate a .dex in /data/dalvik-cache ,
and lib, user preference etc. into /data/data,
also, google map, market etc. those stuff store cache in /data partition,
so storage size decrease as applications are installed to sd is just a normal habit.!
You may move data/data to ext3 /4 partition as well as dalvik cache by symlink
but not suggested, it would just make the phone running slower.

Ok, I'm guessing data/data and dalvick cache is read only. So could you explain exactly how to move these folders over to ext3 and to symlink dalvick cache? Would like to try this to see how it runs, I can always do a restore if it's no good.

[Q] Moving apps to SD: in which folder do they end up?

Hi all,
maybe a very simple question here, but when I move files to SD (using Elelinux/Cyanogen, android 2.3.4), in which folder do they end up, with which file extension? When I had to flash a new ROM, sometimes I had to do a full wipe including factory reset, so all apps vanished from the phone, but did they still persist on SD? and if yes, in which folder, and do I need to delete these files?
I've searched my SD-card, found different folders with app-like names and different extensions, but I don't know which is the correct one.
(example: moved Facebook app to SD to save internal memory space, flashed new ROM -> factory reset, installed FB app again, it says I can copy it to SD again, but is there still a piece of the previous FB app on the SD?)
thanks for your help!
EDIT: did some searching and some say it might me the ".android_secure" folder. Is it safe to just delete everything in this folder? because it's taking up some space...
That's correct, the applications end up in .android_secure. If you do a full wipe (factory reset) it is safe to remove it, since those apps needs to be restored before they can be used anyway.

Internal memory almost full, no idea why

Hi, I have a s3 international version, rooted and cm11 on it. My internal memory is almost full and I can't seem to move apps to external sd card. Also, a few months ago I had 5 gigs of space left, now 900mb... Did a complete whipe and started all over again, but still 900mb free memory. Is there a way I can delete everything, maybe go back to stock an start all over?
Thanks
Camera, or game data files, or changing rom to rom
1.When you switch from rom to rom( like 4.1.2 to 4.2.2) it leaves the previous rom's files in an folder named '0'..
2. when you may put some pirated games, after wipe.. the folder( data files) still exist
3. well, have you been recording a lot of videos or took a lot of pics??
I did have a few '0' folders, but I deleted them al.
Could be a few app folder, but definitely not 4gigs.and I have maybe 50 photos on it and no films.
Would it be bad if I deleted everything on the internal sd?
I also have a folder storage/emulated/0 and storage/emulated/legacy. In both are the same files. Can I delete 1 of the 2 entirely?
Thanks for the fast reply btw

To be on your place I would install Root Manager from G.Play and carefully looked inside. In acc to result i would be acting next step. And probably you will find another 0 folder. ( personal experience)

Use any file explorer (ES file explorer has one) which has storage space analysis tools.
That'll help you to locate the folders which are using most of the space.

Urgent help needed For Cleaning Mics files upto 7 Gb

In my redmi note 3 32 gb...

My phone is not rooted.
Pls give me solution to take back those space.

This is miscellaneous files, is there because they're not music, video, pics or apps.
That means there are files in your internal stoerage that are taking up space. Look around inside your internal storage to see whats using the space
Checked all storage ....did not find that file....even deleting all things.
Clear your internal storage. Open file manager go to internal server card select all and delete

Install Disk usage app from play store, it will show what exactly that is.
Use this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.android.diskusage to check which files are consuming space

System data taking my 7 gb from remaining 24 gb.
While already mi told it's 32 gb.
Check screen shot.
Not showing inside system data...what is it?
I think its system partition, where all the files requires to run your phone are stored there.

Just checked my phone and I don't have the misc data (under settings menu), and I do have a system data partition but it's much smaller.,
so its either
oh see this post too.

misc files seems to be generated by the Camera app (I use OpenCamera, so that's probably why I don't have this "misc" data)
--------------------- other reasons -----------------
1. you are installing big APK files that don't use obb files (normally amazon app store uses these types, possibly other app stores), so all the big data gets written to the /data/data/ or /data/app dir taking up space.
2. system backups from twrp or similar can eat a lot of space. this could be why it's listed as system data
3. install sdmaid see if it finds anything abnormal.
4. (unlikely) you have a lot of apps installing to the "Internal Memory" - android thinks it's a sdcard - these apps are hidden under /mnt/sdcard0/.android_secure
(mounted with a fake mount point to prevent access, also a hidden folder) so you can't modify apps or view contents - try uninstalling apps to see if size changes.

I still some backup my possible...so how I can remove that and find?
My phone is not rooted and no twrp.

Checked sd maid .....but no help.
It's asking for root to check system data folder.
Any idea or command that I can scan /data folder via adb command on pc?
I don't want to root currently.
Tried all but not able to find what is eating my all space...
Any why it's not deleted even after reset .
open the Camera app properties click force stop and clear data and clear cache, see if that does it, without root you will be unable to browse in /data/data

But deleting camera app data or cache did not help.
--------
Now I think I can't find that misc without root.
So I leaved it until I root.
Now I watched some youtube videos and added my nano sim with sd card.
And able to use both dual sim and sd.
Moved some internal data in sd...atleast made some more space with the help of sd. ??☺☺
Delete local back up
You must have enabled local storage backup. Delete it and you'll free up and lot of space.
Here's how you can delete it

Unknown Internal storage/SD useage: what is the cause & fix?

My Device:
I am using a Galaxy S7 SM-G930F 32GB Exynos running IronMan-Rom V1.2.0 and have TWRP 3.0.2-4 and the phone is rooted.
The Issue:
Something is using 13.85GB on my internal SD/Storage (see attached screenshots) I discovered this yesterday lunch time and have since spent a few hours on here and other forums across the inter-webs trying to get to the bottom of the issue. To try and discount and head off any none relevant data/answers related o the issue below is a list of what I have done so far -
Its no app cache related, because wiping the delvic and data cache from TWRP did nothing to change the other storage figure.
I deleted every scrape of data from the internal Storage/SD manually and also wiped internal Storage/SD from TWRP and no effect.
Its not app related and I have checked all my app caches and the 10 largest don't account for a fraction of the 13.85GB.
Auto update in the Google play has always been set to disable since I installed the ROM, so it not caching anything
I type *#9900# and deleted the dev/cat log, and this made no difference.
I tried SD maid, It found 2GB which I removed, didn't effect the internal storage and just broke google play services causing to it to constantly FC - utterly pointless app.
I have tried several other SD tools (SD tools, OneTool, CCleaner and numbers our SD manager type apps from the playstore to name a few) to try and ascertain what exactly is using the space in the internal storage and nothing so far has shone any light on the subject.
I have manually rum TRIM via Lspeed app and that made no difference.
DiskUseage (see screenshot) is showing it as 'System Data', but I am unable to browse or select it - and it doesn't make any sense its called that either.
My knowledge of linux is limited, but I am wondering if the internal storage is an actual drive and not a symbolic link to another location, if that's the case where is the other location so I can see if I can clean out the phantom data from there.
Doing a factory reset does indeed remove the 'phantom' 13.85GB of data, but I absolutely do not see why this extreme measure has to be taken. There surely has to be a reasonable explanation and fix for this?! As I would prefer not to have to spend a chunk of my weekend setting up my bloody phone all over again due to have to factory reset.
So while doing another search on the playstore for tools to help me, I found a tool called 'Diskinfo' and this showed one of the mount names for the internal storage as /Data. I then reinstalled TotalCommander, did a properties check on that folder and found 17.GB of data in that folder. So am gonna painstakingly go through that folder to see if there is one that roughly matches the 13.85GB mentioned in the OP.
I then found the mysterious phantom data, it was all the files I have placed into 'privatemode' So as I now understand it (privateMode), instead of just encrypting the data where it was on the external SD card, it moves the data to the internal storage/SD card. So I will be looking for an alternative app to private mode.
Hey. I'm having that issue with a costumer. I would like to know how you erased and/or solve that problem. Thank You and very helpful info.
Eventually found file '0' using an app called SD Card Manager - Samsung Tab A Android 5. Removed 4gb of data. Excellent!
I seem to be having a similar issue on my s9, I've only had it since early February this year. My apps is only 10gb, and I have ~34gb of files that on there, yet my 60gb is nearly full
Can someone help me, please??
I have an Edge phone that has almost all of my Internal Storage gone!
I have 64.00 GB and 19.62GB is taken up by "Apps", how do I fix this??
I'm not using that many Apps, so I don't understand why this is happening....please help!
Ok so what if you are not using private mode? How do you remove this data without doing a hard reset? I can see it on my disk but can't get rid of it? I have never used private mode on my phone before, used CCleaner and there is still about 17 gigs worth of **** stuck on my phone.

Hello, i have the same problem. Have you been able to recovery/find that data from the privatemode? My brother's S7e is on some Note8 rom and i can't find anything 'private mode' in the Settings. He has 300mb free of 24gb and literally not a single picture on his Internal storage.

Just do a search in setting for 'private mode' and disable it, at some point your brother has enabled to password protect some files on the device.
More relevant info here - https://www.samsung.com/uk/support/mobile-devices/what-is-private-mode-and-how-do-i-use-it/
All this is happening to me and my private mode is off. I literally copied and pasted all of my files from my phone storage onto the computer to relief the size, again, plus the CClear app, and the dent released around 2gb.
12gb is used on a 32gb phone, removing everything it is at 29.2gb maxed out.
This is nuts...
I clear my phone out every couple of months. Images to keep on the computer, removing unnessisary things. Private mode has always been disabled... What do I need to do?
