[Solved] Sticky situation! - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
Without really giving it a second thought I went and encrypted my device. I didn't think I'd be stuck with this rom and/or that CWM would become worthless.
I made plans on selling this one to buy SGS4 instead, when it hits the market and I wanted to do an as proper sale ad possible.
I need help decrypting the device and if possible unroot it and installing the original TouchWiz. I'd be saticfied with a rooted device, as well, only with the original "rom".
Any help is appreciated!

AW: Sticky situation!
Hi.
I guess download mode still works.
Do shouldn't it be sufficient to flash a stock rom there?
I never did this but my guess is it will work.
Regards.

Thanks for the quick reply, this sounds easy!
Can someone back this info up?
Also, where can I download the rom? samsung.com?

Re: Sticky situation!
Hey
He is right..
You can download it from sammobile.com/firmwares or you can google it..prefer the firmware for where you stay..
That ways you'll remove the root and also factory reset your phone..

If you can reach download mode (shutdown phone then power + home + volume down) it should be fine.
Just ensure you're flashing the correct ROM.
Like tchindalia suggested. Find your Rom here.

PS: To leave download mode hold the power button for quite some time.

Which one should I pick? I mean there are none from EU, or it me just being blind?

Make sure you select the GT-I9300 and not GT-I9300T

Oh right.. And now it's narrowed down to two alternatives! Does it matter which one of the Swedish ones I choose? VDS or HTS?

AW: Sticky situation!
In general it doesn't matter.
It's just a question of Bloatware.
Think about the CSC as android+carrier-ware.
If you have a backup of your esf partition there is a small file with your device csc.

Have you ever tried encrypting? There's no such thing as a decrypt option..
Anyway, the reason why I still haven't marked this thread as solved is that I still haven't tried it out yet! :-|
I will, soon!
Thanks alot for all the helpful posts.

I encrypted my S3 and decrypted it under settings... Took me lots of time to realize that encrypt option becomes decrypt one there

I suppose you ran some other rom than CM then, because the option stays the same.

In fact under stock JB decrypt option is enabled. Once the phone is ,of course, encrypted

Help here please, badly needed
hi Everyone,
Im using S3 I9300 rooted with stock rom
I was going through this post (http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1772234) where it showed how to swipe ur sd card as internal memory and vice virsa but required a kernel with int.l something which I dint have .
In order to follow the instructions I downloaded the file; MVLALH1_Insecure_kernel_CWM and flashed it on my phone. then I downloaded the file from the post (extsd2internalsd2_mattiadj_and_infx_6) and flashed it through CMW but my phone dint read my SD card as internal memory so I read more
EXTRACT FROM THE POST:
THE GUIDE
First of all make a nandroid backup!! I'm not responsable for any problem! You make this procedure at your risk!!!1. Format external sd card from your pc as fat32 or extfat
2. Copy attached zip in you external sd. Choose the right zip. If you have formatted your sd as fat32 choose _fat32 version, if the filesystem is extfat choose _extfat version
3. Go into recovery
4. Flash the zip
5. Reboot and....enjoy your memory increase!!!!
I'm on official jelly bean with kernel with init.d support but the mod seems not working or my kernel/rom does not support init.d
1. Flash the mod
2.Install script manager from play store https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...51bGwsMSwyLDNd
3.Open script manager, click on browse as root then ok
4.Choose the file name 11extsd2internalsd located in /system/etc/init.d and click on Script/Executable
5.Now tap on Su, Boot and Save
6.Reboot your phone and enjoy!
[/COLOR]
So I went on the second paragraph of instructions and downloaded the script manager and went to the 11extsd2internalsd file. I was told to select the option script/executable but couldn't find any option having both so selected executable and then selected SU and BOOT and then restarted my phone
Now Im not sure when it happened but my S3 is not detecting my sim card thou my sim is working perfectly and I have no clue how to fix it
please can anyone help me I tried to explain as best I could but still please ask if u want to know more cuz right now my s3 is without sim card

Did what you guys suggested yesterday but what you said wasn't entirely true. Flashing the stock firmware from download mode worked fine, but it actually just put me in an even more sticky situation.
My current situation: device still rooted and still encrypted, only difference is that it won't acceptt my old encryption password. In other words; I can't use the phone at all.
Any ideas to this problem? Is it possible to clear the internal memory and start from scratch perhaps?
Cheers.

Well if you are on stock it will be 3e recovery and a factory reset will wipe data AND sd card(internal) just so you are aware

[ROM] [STOCK] Restore full stock 2.3.7 build GRK39F

Hello, sorry for the title error (2.3.6).
This is the way to restore your Nexus One to 100% stock Android 2.3.6, waiting ICS Android 4 official OTA updates (if there will be one).
This rom contains:
hboot
radio
recovery
system ...
(all things return stock except the unlocked bootloader but it isn't a problem)
Thank to Football for the rom e to the XDA wiki for the guide. I decided to create this thread for who is in truble (as me some days ago) and for who wants to return stock before the possible relasing of ICS. Before everything backup your data (and sd card for security) and from custom recovery do:
-wipe battery stats (if you want)
-wipe data and cache
-wipe dalvik cache
Now:
1)Download the shipped rom GRK39F from PASSIMG_Passion_Google_WWE_3.13.1700.1_GRK39F_relase_signed.zip
2)Rename the downloaded ZIP file to PASSIMG.ZIP.
3)Transfer the provided PASSIMG.ZIP file to the root of your SD card.
4)Power down your phone.
5)Hold down the Volume Down button as you power your phone back on.
6)A screen should appear showing your phone's system searching for various files. This will take up to 2 minutes.
7)The phone will ask you if you want to start the update. Press the Volume Up button to start the update.
8)If you followed these steps correctly - congratulations, you are now on stock 2.3.6 ROM.

Hallo. I've been looking for this instruction. Thank you. BTW your signature shows that you own Nexus S, not Nexus One. Are you sure the instruction you wrote is for Nexus One?
Yes i had also a nexus one this guide works perfectly for me...i took this from XDA wiki and i updated the latest build

Thanks a lot, the most recent stock ROM in the FAQ was FRF91.

Excellent, I got it! Thanks!
Dumb question, but there's no reason I can't just flash this in Amon-Ra or CW, is there? Your instructions are for stock recovery, but as far as I know it should work in any recovery, shouldn't it? (Obviously stock recovery will be flashed on reboot with a stock ROM, I know that.)
you can't flash it by stock recovery or custom recovery. This is not a custom or stock rom...it is a shipped image (in fact you have to name it not in "update" but in "passimg"). You don't have to enter in any recovery...while you boot in the bootloader all is automatic without using recovery! i don't know if im clear, i don't speak english very well

No recovery request in the passage
Your English is fine I forgot that the bootloader handles the updates, not the recovery (which is why the name has to be specific, it looks for that file in the boot sequence). Answers my real question, anyway, which was whether I'd need to revert to stock recovery to apply it (I don't).
Thank you for your help.

Didn't work
I followed thee steps you suggested. But after it scanned the SD card it didn't ask for anything. It just sat there at the bootloader screen. I'm using CM7.1 right, don't know if that affects anything.
No it is not a problem cm7 ...i Think that you should do this passage if you are using windows:
1) rename in PASSIMG (without .zip)
2) copy it in the root of SD card (not in a folder)
this should be the solution

Hey
yea that's what I did. But I didn't clear cache and data via recovery beforehand. Could that be the reason?
I think not....but for a good use of stock ROM you have to clear everything. If the file is complete downloaded and named correctly the bootloader has to recognize it. Sorry

Hey
I think the zip file has an issue. It said something while searching for files in the bootloader. Can you reupload maybe?

I got into CWM pressing on / off 3 or 4 times when sony ericsson appears on screen and increases the brightness!
But I would warn you that the keys are confused, when I press the home key the selection bar up as if by pressing volume up! But volume buttons are correct!
The hard keys are not confused. They should work like this. The soft keys should work under recovery also.BACK for getting into the previous menu and MENU works like volume down.
Can i install this on my ST15a? And under this kernel can i use the feature Apps2sd? Thanks.
You can install it on your ST15a and you will not experience any functionality problem.
BUT you will almost certainly encounter problems if you try to update via SEUS.
(Even if the installation is complete)
About Apps2sd now. What exactly do you want to achieve?
I can assure you that every function of cwm works perfectly!

Something like cyanogen mode. That the rom install the apps in a previously created ext partition. I have no problems whit the Seus issue, as long a can use it at least, to restore the smartphone to "normal" if something's gone terribly wrong.

What i meant by the word "problems" is that SEUS will almost for sure recognize your phone as an ST15i.So SEUS will repair your phone as an ST15i and not as an ST15a.
You can format your sd using cwm and create whatever partition you want.

Ok. It is possible to "fix" that by changing the letter "i" by the letter "a" in the buid.prop file in system? And how do i create the ext partition in recovery mode? Once created; ¿how the SE firware save the apps in there? It doe's automatically? Or I've to use an app like apps2sd to do so. Another question as this firmware is Rooted, ¿Busibox iso installed? Thanks a lot an excuse me if i'm a bit annoying ...

It would be better to copy your old bulid.prop file and compare it line by line with the new one.Change everything that has to do with the model type of your device.
You can create the ext partition using the partition sd card option which lies under the advanced menu of cwm.
You can use the app s2e from the market for transfering your apps to ext partition. The kernel has busybox installed and is rooted also.

What about your experience using this ROM? what improvements have you encounter personally? Any drawbacks? Thanks...
Actually it is not a full rom.Just a kernel.Everything works exactly like stock. So you have all the advantages (stability) of stock kernel and all the drawbacks (lack of customization) of stock kernel.
The basic improvement is that you have root access and a fully functional cwm.

Is there a way to fix my misstake?

Hi,
I flashed the new Build of CM9, i thought it was a normal ROM that you would flash like a another ROM, but then someone told me that i had to flash something called Gapps + fix, but since i can't access to market, or paste files to my phone i can't do so much.
I want to go back to my old rom (checkrom), but i didn't do any backup and i don't have the rom in my phone (i removed it). Please how can i solve this problem?
thanks
Never tried CM9, but if you haven't backed up and "removed" your previous ROM, you've lost all your data/settings.
Factory reset and clean install of checkrom seems to be your only option - please correct me if I'm wrong, CM9 people.
Advice - Never ever ever ever flash a new ROM without a backup - asking for trouble.
what happens when you put your phone in download mode and connect it to your pc with odin?

Please understand. When you're installing CM9, you cant access your phones memory, because you'll need a program from market, or you need to put a apk in your phone. But since i forgott to install Gapps together with this rom, now i don't have market, and i can't access my memory = This mean, i can't install my new rom.
So i need to know if there's another way to fix the mtp problem or what's called so i can put files to my phone.

there is something called SDK, its for debugging and you can push apps on your phone with this!
Not sure how it works though, you should check out some guides first
You should still be able to boot into download mode and use Odin to flash a stock ROM.
Put your SGII into download mode by pressing the volume down button, the home button and the power button at once.

Answer - With difficulty becauseyou didn't do a backup
You didn't mention the mtp problem at all in your original post.
Doesn't matter which ROM you install, you should always do a backup, and I'm sure you know that..??
As said, if you don't do a backup, you're asking for problems. You didn't backup, you've got problems. Live and learn.
Lykke til.
This really is not that complicated, ..
Download the app "Android Commander" ... google it ...
Install it ...
Make sure debugging is on, on your phone ...
Run android commander , you now have a windows file manager that you can use to dump files to , or even double click to install apps to your phone ....
you cant just go back to checkrom from cm9.
you have to flash a stock rom via odin and root it again or flash prerooted via odin. then you can install new rom zips with cwm.
as far as i know you cant even use a normal backup when cyanogen is flashed. tried it on galaxy s when i started flashing, but it just doesnt work.
when going back from cyanogen you always have to flash stock with odin.

[Q] T-Mobile UK ICS Rooting Problems

Hello, I'm currently trying to root my T-Mobile (UK) S2 using Odin. It is using ICS 4.0.3
My original kernel is XXBVLPB. I've downloaded the CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXX_LPB-v5.2-CWM5 insecure kernel which is the one I keep trying to use.
All goes well in Odin, and it says pass.
Unfortunately, when the phone reboots, it goes to the first splash screen with the yellow triangle and powers off.
Any attempt to switch it back on produces the same result.
Am I missing something blatantly obvious?
I'm a relative noob, so please go easy on me. I've searched the forums quite thoroughly beforehand but to no avail.
Any help greatly appreciated.
Fred.
Should not be doing that, get the official kernel and flash back using Odinand see If it boots.

Has anyone here managed to root their (UK) T-Mobile Galaxy S2 GT-I9100 running 'ICS' 4.0.3 with kernel/baseband/build xxBVLPB?
If, so, how did you go about it and which software did you use?
I have done many searches and have not come up with a definitive answer.
Many thanks.

You realise that method explicitly says "Choose apply update from external storage.", right? In other words, you need a microSD card. If you get past that part (stock recovery) and are indeed in CWM recovery, make sure you're using the correct "install zip from x".
I'm not familiar with your particular ROM, but someone mentioned a random Italian ROM had a full /system partition, making rooting not entirely straight forward. This was my response to him: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=25479898#post25479898

You realise that method explicitly says "Choose apply update from external storage.", right? In other words, you need a microSD card. If you get past that part (stock recovery) and are indeed in CWM recovery, make sure you're using the correct "install zip from x".

I was in CWM, it just won't see ANY zip folders that are on my SD card :S
I also tried CF Insecure method...This too did not work....Just booted to first splash screen with yellow triangle and powered off.
This build is a toughie it seems....Challenge remains
You seem to have ignored the most important part of the thread I linked, about /system being full (well, that and just flashing an unbranded ROM). Can you check how much free space is in /system? (easiest noob friendly way would be to install Titanium Backup which should function without root to display "System ROM" free space at the bottom of the main screen).

If CF-root is failing to boot, and the other method for rooting isn't showing you any zips on the SD card, make you're sure you've tried both "install zip from" options (yes, there are two, which I mentioned earlier) from the alternative option to root.
If you've exhausted all of those, other options are running adb logcat while booting CF-root to see what's crashing, flashing alternative, rooted ICS kernels, or flashing a different stock ROM.
DONE IT!!

My word....After a long and mainly fruitless couple of days, I've FINALLY ROOTED!!
This is the one that worked for me: http://galaxys2root.com/galaxy-s2-root/how-to-root-galaxy-s2-i9100-icsandroid-4-0/
So it appears that the insecure kernels I was using were not compatible, even though they were a letter for letter match!.
I'd like to offer many thanks to all those who helped me on here!! Also big thanks to the guys at GalaxyS2root.com
What would be the best place to post this link for all the T-Mobile UK users who might be interested in doing the same?
Link kernel is just a copy of Chainfires kernel from the CFRoot post .

I must add, that if you use this method, the kernel prevents you from accessing apps on the SD card....This has been fixed with THIS: http://download.chainfire.eu/152/[email protected] <span class=
SOLVED!
Done and dusted!

[Q] Bricked my GT-I9300 w/ TWRP... - Help, please!

Just tried to install TWRP (Touch) from the wrong forum on top of my existing recovery, I guess (not really sure what I did; was watching NFL simultaneously.. DANG!). And now my phone won't get past the boot screen anymore...
My International Galaxy SIII is (was) unlocked and rooted; running the U.K. (O2) version of Android 4.1.2.
Retracing my steps, it seems like I tried to install the US/Verizon recovery image of TWRP on my i9300 by mistake. When I downloaded the image from GooManager, it offered to install the image right upon completion. And thinking that I was in the correct XDA-Dev Forum section, I confirmed... Bad Mistake. (Yes... I know, I'm an idiot...).
FWIW, I've been 'messing' with my Smartphones + multiple Tablets for 6+ years now, but I never managed to brick anything thus far. Bad 1st time, as I am about to move back to Europe (from the US).
Phone does not show on Laptop (under drives/devices) anymore. I do know about ADB and some basic commands (..enough to install ROMs, boot into Recovery, Bootloader etc.), but what can I do if I don't even get passed the boot screen? What's the command I need, and how can that get me back on track? -- Tried to shut down, use "the usual" power button/volume button combinations; even pulled SD card storage and SIM (as I had read that suggestion in the i-9000 Forum)... No dice.
I would kinda stink, but if I have to wipe my phone to make it work again, so be it... I have ROM Manager backups stored on my external SD card.
-- Any help & suggestions are greatly appreciated!
Thanks
Armin
P.S.: Since I wanted to get rid of ClockworkMod, I did not take a Nandroid BU first...of course
not sure and I guess someone more qualified might be better able to help, but can you get into Download mode and re-flash correct recovery via Odin?
I'll try that first thing tomorrow morning... Thanks for your suggestion!

YES! Was able to get into 'Download Mode'... What now? I'm not sure if simply flashing the correct recovery will do the trick...will it? Well, then again.. it can't get worse, can it?!
I'll give that a try via Odin. Stay tuned!

AWESOME... That did the trick!!!
Here's a quick step-by-step for getting your phone back to life via Download mode (my modest contribution to the community):
1. Pull battery
2. Put battery back in and go into download mode right away (pressing POWER + Volume DOWN + HOME button)
3. Confirm that you want to continue (Volume UP)
4. Connect phone to your PC
5. Download .tar file of whatever you want/need to flash
6. Fire up Odin
7. Leave all Odin settings as they are.. don't check/uncheck anything (!!).
8. Click "PDA" button and select .tar file with app or ROM you want to flash
9. Press "Start"... and -after a quick, automatic reboot of your phone- you should be back in business... [yay!]
Thanks, guys!
Great that it worked!
