Getting that Android Slowness... - Motorola Droid X2

I've been happily running CM7 for several months now. Originally it was very smooth and very snappy. Now I'm getting to that point where things aren't so fast anymore and I'd like to speed it all back up. I don't think it's related to any apps I've loaded, because I really haven't loaded much and it's been a gradual slowdown too rather than an all of a sudden thing.
So my question is - what's the best way to clean this up? Can I reflash CM7 over itself, and would that improve anything? Wipe cache? I really don't want to go back to stock and reload. That seems like overkill.
Any suggestions?
thanks

if you dont have any apps that matter that much, a clean install would be the best. boot into recovery, wipe data/chache/dalvik, and reflash cm7/gapps.

Issues After Updating Unrooted Tab

I updating my unmodified Tab 10.1 Wifi last night. The update is pretty amazing, if not a bit uglier. But suddenly I am having a ton of issues.
Worst of all is the lag. All the animations are suddenly very laggy and abrupt. Nothing is smooth anymore, when stock Honeycomb used to be very smooth. I talked to my friend, and he isn't having this issue after the official update.
Also, haptic feedback on the stock Android keyboard doesn't work anymore.
Then, Rock Player won't play MKVs with hardware decoding as it used to, and it's COMPLETELY messed up playing it with software decoding. A ton of distortion. Stock player won't play it either.
My dad took my tablet to play Angry Birds, and he says it kept crashing. I tried to play afterward, and it crashed. Just disappears without warning or any FC.
Also, I tried typing this on my tablet. It's now impossible to type (and this isn't limited to browser either) because the tablet is so laggy. Letters are missed, sometimes 3 at a time. I have to hold every button for it to register. Before I could type incredibly fast.
I removed all the widgets and turned off Samsung Apps running in the background, and it's slightly better but still very bad. Any tips guys? Because if not, I'm going to root it and flash a custom ROM. Hopefully the clean start and optimizations will fix it all.

Same thing with me, although I haven't gone through any heavy app use yet, my home screens lag a lot more than they ever did before TW. Google Music also forced closed on me a few times while syncing with the Google servers.
This is after installing a stock build of the OTA via Clockwork. I'm really not too sure what is going on, since mostly everyone else is reporting that everything is very very smooth on their end.
Thanks for the confirmation that at least someone else has my issues. I guess tonight is rooting/flashing night for me. I missed it, after trading my Captivate for a Veer for the next month or two. Though webOS is boss

I Wiped Data and reflashed the ROM, now Im just waiting for a 100 percent charge, and I'm going to try this again. I'll report back.
Here's a question, have you tried restarting the tab, and if you did, did it help any with the lag?
Do a factory restore then after you complete the initial setup, leave it for about 15mins. I did that after I updated since I also noticed some lag on the homescreens and app crashes. Now everything runs smooth as silk and noticeably faster than when it was stock.

Thanks for that.
Yes I did, 3 times. And no help whatsoever.

Factory restore through settings? I'd need to root it for TiBu first anyway. Thanks, I'll try that before flashing.
Also my tab was completely unmodified. It was android 3.1 as it came out of the box, of which I did the touchwiz OTA update this morning.

OK so I rooted my Tab, flashed Clockwork, backed up all my stuff with TiBu, and factory reset. Most of the lag is gone! I can finally type things really fast without it all going to hell! This makes me happy. Baltic on stock Android keyboard is still gone, but this has been an issue with TouchWiz before on the Captivate. I remember with the Froyo leaks, how the stock keyboard had no haptic... it was fixed eventually. I'm not too worried. So my next step is to flash a new ROM, that one with the black bar. Just for the optimizations, and because I miss flashing since I have a webOS device now. Well thanks for the help with the suggestion for the factory reset, my tablet is usable again! Thanks guys!
Last comment. StarBurst is incredibly smooth I flashed it and can't be happier!
Yeah my problems are mostly gone too. I did a factory reset and then reflashed the rom, then I let it sit after boot-up for 20 minutes, rebooted, let it sit for another 5, and then rebooted again. A lot smoother this time around. Was probably just a bad flash.
Glad yours is working well too!

[Q] Problems with Eclipse 2.1

I just recently flashed eclipse 2.1 over my the old eclipse I think it was 2.0.4 or something like that. Anyway, in my opinion it is the best rom for the x2 so thanks goes out to him for working hard keeping it relevant in this every so updating community. So, my problem is, after flashing to eclipse 2.1 my phone will not flip from vertical to horizontal when trying to type or really do anything for that matter. I know it's not a problem with the device because when I load "super stickman golf" the phone has no problem switching. My question is, 1) is there anyone else having this problem and 2) can it be fixed? I love this community and I think it's great to see developers who aren't being paid work so hard to bring up roms that add value to our phones. Thanks for taking the time to read this post and have a great afternoon/morning/day.
Just tried this, seems to be working for me fine. Went rom 1.2 rc1 tho to 2,1.
Yea, I may have changed something in settings without knowing I guess. Seems as if everyone would be having the same problem, I may just reflash and see if that fixes the problem. Thanks for the quick response.
Fixed it, I'm an idiot. It was just something in the settings that was unchecked.

because NOR flash memory has a finite number of write cycles (less than the NAND flash memory like your SD card!) and it IS possible to flash your phone too much. I did it to my MyTouch3G, can't do anything to it now, can't even wipe it, nothing saves it just goes through the motions, It's as read only as you can get.
like every time it reboots I have to go through initial setup in an intolerably slow way.
I mean, it functions, which is impressive given the situation, but consider this.

smoothest, least buggy ROM?

What is the smoothest ROM out there right now (custom or not)? I love the work that the guys do on here, but I'm just getting fed up with FC's and insane lag on my phone. The three ICS roms I've tried have been the original team perfection port, then seraphim, then the unofficial. All of them i've experienced super smooth performance at one point, and then for periods of time the phone just craps out and gives me constant FC's or lag to the point where it takes 5 seconds for the phone to register my action.
Really getting sick of buggines, makes me miss my windows phone (not really though). Is the newest stock ICS ROM the most stable?

It is for me at least. Rooted and debloated it myself and running unsecure kernel. My phablet is AWESOME
I always find odexed roms to be silky smooth.
Not trying to be a d!ck but "best/smoothest/fastest" rom post are not gonna help you
Its always gonna be on the user end.
If you're having problems
Start from a clean slate
Odin to make sure you're coming from a super clean state
Wipe wipe wipe every flash unless told not to
I personally Odin every other rom to make sure everything is running smooth
And every rom I've tried so far runs perfectly
on my phone (unless rom has broken features of course )
But try different stuff out.

I'm new to Android but have had this phone for a few months and have flashed a number of roms. You very well might be right and I hope so. All the roms I've tried recently seem to run nice at first then become unusable.
I'm on unofficial now and I hate using my phone because everything freezes and crashes all the time.
So what's going on? I also wipe everything before flashing. What do you mean by using Odin? Flash the ROM through there rather than recovery? I only used Odin once for root.

Running Odin before hand is farting in the wind....
The cwm wipe is all you need.
Of after a bit your stuff gets unstable, wipe caches and that usually speeds things back up.

My guess, you have an app, or a few that are junking up the cache partition. Causing sluggish performance.
I'M running the team perfection rom also... while i love all the features, every ****ing day i get 100 FC's. Seems like it is always something right?
I used to use SauROM RC4 and i never updated because i had * ZERO * issues.... NEVER had any problems.
I have been running the same application since day 1... seems like some Roms can handle it and some can't, but i feel you completely.
I don't agree with the other guys comment, i've been flashing/OC'ing/Tweaking for ages and it seems that some Roms just Crash Crash Crash F**king CRASH LOL!!

Guys there is no smoothest or best. Each rom will run differently depending on the user setup and apps installed. Most bugs and FC I have seen come from either A. Not wiping system and data before flashing, or B. people restoring system App or data which can cause issues between roms.
And before you ask "Does this mean I have to reset up all my settings, WiFi points, email settings, Launcher widgets and ect?" The answer is yes. This is the price you pay for flashing custom roms.

[Q] Terribly Laggy Phone

ok guys...this is killing me. my phone is absurdly laggy. It got bad with stock gingerbread, got worse with CM9, and now with CM10. lately, when I get a phone call, I can't even answer the phone because just dragging the slider lags so much the whole phone locks up. when I get to my desktop I need to use my task killer to kill everything before I can do anything.
what gives? is this the hardware? does everyone have this same problem? or is it unique to me? I'm ready to throw it through a wall.
no widgets running right now. and when I check running apps, there really isn't much going on. I'm about ready to go back to stock and see what happens. I got the phone a year ago and can't live through another year of this. heck, I got an iphone 4s from work and don't want to consider using it in place of my android.
help me please.
Wipe cache and dalvik in BSR and see if that helps. If not I would SBF back to 2.3.4 and start fresh. When on CM10 I see very little lag.
Sent from my JB'd X2
Are you running any scripts? One thing I noticed after flashing CM10 was that some scripts caused more problems than they fixed, namely V6 Supercharger and KAK.
nope, no scripts. I did flash CM10 over CM9, and the same issue existed in CM9 so maybe it's just carried forward from that. Maybe I will have to sbf and start from scratch as suggested.
thanks
If you just simply flash a ROM over another without wiping data/cache/dalvik, you will most likely experience these types of problems. I would try first what was suggested above, wipe cache and dalvik. If nothing works SBF. I would say to flash the ROM again but we cant flash ROMs once in CM10.
I suggest wiping your SD/Phone memory, Wiping the Cache, and Dalvic cache and see if stock Gingerbread is still laggy.

looking for advice, excuse the long post

sorry ahead of time for the rambling and wall of text.
i have a few questions i suppose. im currently running the latest 4.1.2 release on my razr. stock. i went through 2 phones recently because the update was wreacking havoc on them. before the update i loved my razr. only issue i had was battery life, but i cant lie, was my fault for playing battery hogging games ALOT. lol. so, i got my latest replacement phone. i have the same apps as before, minus a few ive ditched. the phone is feeling laggy/sluggish now. it may partly be from tsf shell, which i love but would ditch if need be to get my phone back, even though it never caused lag before the update.
From reading around the razr isnt getting another update antime soon, if at all. its pretty much on its last leg, as theyre moving away from it im sure. ive tried numerous things to get it running a bit smoother and its helped to an extent, but there is still some lag.
my question is, whats the best way to go from here to getting it running better. ive been rooted before and tried different custom roms, so im not against it, if thats the way to go. if it is, what custom rom is best? if there isnt a 'best' which would you recommend i try? i guess a 4.2.2 rom will probly be suggested. what are the major differences in the 2?
thanks for any opinions and advice.
If it is running slow, you could always use an app like is monitor to see if an app has gone rogue and is using up lots of ram or CPU. I doubt its tsf, as I used that for a very long time on mine without issues.

Here ya go!
Hey there!
First off, for the lagging problem, I'm positive that your phone probably needs to be cleaned up. The stock JB that you currently have is supposed to be the most stable one there is.
For cleaning up, just get SD Maid, and clean up using all the options available.
WAIT! Can I get one thing straight? You did do a factory reset before upgrading to JB 4.1.1 from ICS, right?
A LOT of problems sprout from this simple fact actually. A factory reset is mandatory when upgrading from one kernel and ROM to another, be it stock or not.
In Custom ROMs, we tend to always encourage full wipes before flashing one ROM over another unless we are only doing a minor, from let's say, Liquidsmooth v2.4 to v2.7. Then, only the cache and dalvik has to be wiped.
Yep. Hope this helped. If the answer to my above question is no (you didn't full wipe), the nI would just recommend you to use TiB, backup all your apps and data, then factory reset and then restore using TiB. That should help.
replying
the phone im talking about came from the manufacturer by verizon with 4.1.2 on it, so im not sure if it was upgraded that way.
if i have to factory reset, whats the vest way of saving game data so i dont have to start all over?
im currently not rooted. will root if its needed.
thanks for the previous info.
Hmmm. A sticky situation, TBH.
Maybe you can try rooting and then this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.thedarken.sdm
But I haven't quite got experience working with RAZRs which came with 4.1.1 installed..
So try out the app after rooting, and if that doesnt help, factory reset. Backup your apps and their data using Titanium Backup which is available for rooted phones.
If even after that things are laggy, then i suggest getting Liquidsmooth or MoKee Rom. They are pretty fast and lagless.
