looking for advice, excuse the long post - Motorola Droid RAZR

sorry ahead of time for the rambling and wall of text.
i have a few questions i suppose. im currently running the latest 4.1.2 release on my razr. stock. i went through 2 phones recently because the update was wreacking havoc on them. before the update i loved my razr. only issue i had was battery life, but i cant lie, was my fault for playing battery hogging games ALOT. lol. so, i got my latest replacement phone. i have the same apps as before, minus a few ive ditched. the phone is feeling laggy/sluggish now. it may partly be from tsf shell, which i love but would ditch if need be to get my phone back, even though it never caused lag before the update.
From reading around the razr isnt getting another update antime soon, if at all. its pretty much on its last leg, as theyre moving away from it im sure. ive tried numerous things to get it running a bit smoother and its helped to an extent, but there is still some lag.
my question is, whats the best way to go from here to getting it running better. ive been rooted before and tried different custom roms, so im not against it, if thats the way to go. if it is, what custom rom is best? if there isnt a 'best' which would you recommend i try? i guess a 4.2.2 rom will probly be suggested. what are the major differences in the 2?
thanks for any opinions and advice.

If it is running slow, you could always use an app like is monitor to see if an app has gone rogue and is using up lots of ram or CPU. I doubt its tsf, as I used that for a very long time on mine without issues.

Here ya go!
Hey there!
First off, for the lagging problem, I'm positive that your phone probably needs to be cleaned up. The stock JB that you currently have is supposed to be the most stable one there is.
For cleaning up, just get SD Maid, and clean up using all the options available.
WAIT! Can I get one thing straight? You did do a factory reset before upgrading to JB 4.1.1 from ICS, right?
A LOT of problems sprout from this simple fact actually. A factory reset is mandatory when upgrading from one kernel and ROM to another, be it stock or not.
In Custom ROMs, we tend to always encourage full wipes before flashing one ROM over another unless we are only doing a minor, from let's say, Liquidsmooth v2.4 to v2.7. Then, only the cache and dalvik has to be wiped.
Yep. Hope this helped. If the answer to my above question is no (you didn't full wipe), the nI would just recommend you to use TiB, backup all your apps and data, then factory reset and then restore using TiB. That should help.

replying
the phone im talking about came from the manufacturer by verizon with 4.1.2 on it, so im not sure if it was upgraded that way.
if i have to factory reset, whats the vest way of saving game data so i dont have to start all over?
im currently not rooted. will root if its needed.
thanks for the previous info.

Hmmm. A sticky situation, TBH.
Maybe you can try rooting and then this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=eu.thedarken.sdm
But I haven't quite got experience working with RAZRs which came with 4.1.1 installed..
So try out the app after rooting, and if that doesnt help, factory reset. Backup your apps and their data using Titanium Backup which is available for rooted phones.
If even after that things are laggy, then i suggest getting Liquidsmooth or MoKee Rom. They are pretty fast and lagless.

[Q] Wipe or non wipe when final Samsung ICS comes out?

I am contemplating installing KP1 from 2.3.5. Now I understand that the ICS Roms are wipe and definitely would choose to do so from Gingerbread anyway.
But normally Samsung released roms are non wipe aren't they? Well every rom I have flashed has been without the need to wipe with no obvious problems so far.
So my question is if I flash one of the alpha/beta roms and set everything up again (I'm choosing not to use titanium so I have a fresh install of everything) will the official ICS from Samsung likely be a non wipe rom or will I have to set everything up again?? I may choose to use Titanium backup in that case though.
This is my first Android phone (come from the evil microsoft on my last few phones ) so have yet to see a major operating system upgrade.
I would imagine that it will be a wipe rom, system app data at the very least so you are talking stuff like sms/accounts/etc.
But I would think they will make a kies backup/restore part of the official update process.
But as far from the alpha leaks to an official build, i would imagine you would need to wipe, so I dont see a reason to set it up yet.
Thanks for your thoughts. Thats what my gut instinct was.
I almost caved in to upgrading on this release. Even made a record file of every app that backs its settings up and also what apps don't along with a list of all my important apps.....
But now you've backed up my thoughts I might just hold off until the official release before thoroughly spending a couple of hours setting it all back up without using titanium backup. After all I feel ICS won't make a whole new user experience or increase in battery life by the look of it... yeh another topic.
It could be a few weeks away and then non wipe roms from there on.... or a few months

Well so far the ICS builds are generally unstable and buggy, not really daily driver quality, mostly in the bringup stage, I would be surprised if we are a month or so from a good build from samsung.
The samsung builds look a lot like gingerbread at the moment, and the CM9 builds are missing quite a few features due to needing to wait for ICS kernel source from samsung for some features.
At the moment, I would stay away, a lot of pain for not much gain.
Thanks for the heads up. Temptation zero now

Another thing is, unfortunately the samsung ICS builds have the same old TW UI, at least we ill be able to push the stock ICS launcher to get back some of it, but still, its going to look like touchwizz
Yeh I read that its still v4, not v5 or anything. Edited.....

ICS Leak--how do you guys like it?

With the i717 ICS leak yesterday, I figured someone would have already posted this question.
I am on the fence on if I should apply it on my stock phone. Is it faster/smoother/stable?
If you have the AT&T leak from yesterday, if you wouldn't mind sharing your opinion on your device. I read someone was going back to GB and was trying to figure out why you would do that at all.
its not a terrible release at all. its mostly stable. there are some quirks in it but nothing earth shattering. if you have a stock note then id say go with ics.
i myself am planning on going back to GB. i want to wait until theres more development with ICS before i reflash again. i miss saurom.

I'm using the leaked stock ICS leak & it's awesome. I did have to remove all the AT&T bloatware with TiBU or settings > apps to un-install. I get a little lag when trying to scroll fast in settings > apps & in TiBu but besides that, it has been very stable for me. The only issue I had was with VVM but figured it out with the help of a forum poster.
You could always use DAG (creator of Saurom) modified stock ICS leak version. I'm using this as a daily driver & left GB behind in the past.
Its fun but...
Some apps keep crashing...right now I can't get google play to even load
Edit-Fixed problem by restoring backed up version of play store....just switched from iOS and still learning to problem solve I guess.
Thanks all.
So it appears to be pretty good if you treat it like a fresh install and not an upgrade. My gut tells me that the over the air update from AT&T is going to likely be the same for all intents and purposes.
So I did it yesterday and found out that you have no choice BUT to wipe the phone clean. I didn't know applying the update would annihilate everything. Oh well...it's cool and most things are in the cloud (with the exception of saved games).

I did a total wipe, but all of my pics were still there when the dust settled. I find this odd because when I returned my first Note to AT&T the Factory Data Reset didn't wipe them either.
But, I am not going back to GingerBread until the official ICS is released.
Any bell/telus notes on ics yet? If so hows it workin??!

Why would you go back to Gingerbread?
Also, yeah--I noticed that it doesn't touch the SD card at all (so all my documents and pictures were still on the SD card when my phone was running GB). This time around, I just backed up the contents of the SD card onto the external one.

I would go back to GingBread to get the official AT&T Rom via OTA. Unless I happen to find a Rom that offers a truer ICS experience.
Note To Self
truer ICS?
You mean with no Touch Wiz? I wouldn't mind that either, but I have to say Touch Wiz is WAY better on ICS than it is on GB.

Yeah, I would like as close to stock ICS as possible. I don't mind touchwiz at all really.
DAGr8's rom is super smooth for me.
Been using Apex Launcher and I like the look and options paired up with ICS but the launcher lag when returning to the home screen after a few minutes is annoying.
I'm liking it a lot. GB worked fine, but I prefer the ICS interface, it's a lot cleaner.
As some have mentioned, using 3rd party launchers have created a little lag, but if you go that route, a minor minor delay shouldn't stop you from using the launcher.
having said that, this is an alpha build. the bugs are surprisingly minimal and that makes me happy. can't wait for overclocking
i want to be able to drag an app on to an app to make a folder. can't do that on TW even though it is a feature of ICS...
in the facebook app you have to press an hold the + for a solid second or two before it will give you the option to like a post. not sure if this is FB on ICS or ICS on the Note or what.

Installed ICS from RootWiki this morning
I think the leaked version from RootWiki is pretty much stable and Im going to stay with it. There are some lags and weird things that happen from time to time but I can live with it. my main worry was that I would not have 4G. Well after hours of figuring out why I kept getting errors when flashing the radio i finally got it and now i have 4G. so this will be my daily driver. Now its time to experiment. cheers.

Some lag is an understatement, i had a lot of lag, regardless of the many ways i wiped/flash. Various launcher did not help and i find them inferior to TW... but to each is own. I ended up flash stock GB again

I used saurom with the ICS style theme, and while I was able to over clock it and get everything looking perfect.. this stock ICS runs smoother than the overclocked GB rom.
I'm very pleased and won't be going back. Hopefully a pure ICS rom comes soon enough, but until then I'm happy with this ICS leak.
Also, apex launcher is awesome!

Love ICS on the Note

I just did the update to the leaked ICS and I couldn't be happier. First of all it was so easy to do. It's like a whole different phone. So fast and smooth. I think since our phone has the same specs as the skyrocket but with more pixels to push the note is hampered quite a bit. ICS I think makes better use of hardware acceleration and there fore speeds up the phone quite alot. Btw, since this rom isn't rooted will it still get the ota update when it comes out?

i tried the leak as well, did not like it at all, full of bugs and other issues. not to mention I lost root and my radio as well. tried to go back to Saurom, ended wiping out my external SD card aw well. so my Titanium and CWM backups were gone too. worst of all, it soft bricked the phone. that was likely my fault, but what an ordeal.
yeah, i'm gonna wait on a real DEV port, leaks, not so good for me.
I just find the battery life sucks on ics.
I liked it too for a few days until my touch screen started to become unresponsive. It got so bad i had to touch icons 2-3 times to get anything to work. I didn't notice a difference in battery life, but I wasn't looking for it either. I went back to stock ( after a struggle) and then back to Saurom ROM, which runs every bit as fast for me as ICS, and without the problems I experienced. I got 3500 quadrant scores on leaked ICS, and thats what I average on Saurom without over clocking.
I also ran into the problem of a few apps force closing with ICS, and others not being compatible. The whole experience was actually good because it taught me how to root and flash my phone, and I learned much to the terminology from this forum. This is an awesome site.

[Q] Terribly Laggy Phone

ok guys...this is killing me. my phone is absurdly laggy. It got bad with stock gingerbread, got worse with CM9, and now with CM10. lately, when I get a phone call, I can't even answer the phone because just dragging the slider lags so much the whole phone locks up. when I get to my desktop I need to use my task killer to kill everything before I can do anything.
what gives? is this the hardware? does everyone have this same problem? or is it unique to me? I'm ready to throw it through a wall.
no widgets running right now. and when I check running apps, there really isn't much going on. I'm about ready to go back to stock and see what happens. I got the phone a year ago and can't live through another year of this. heck, I got an iphone 4s from work and don't want to consider using it in place of my android.
help me please.
Wipe cache and dalvik in BSR and see if that helps. If not I would SBF back to 2.3.4 and start fresh. When on CM10 I see very little lag.
Sent from my JB'd X2
Are you running any scripts? One thing I noticed after flashing CM10 was that some scripts caused more problems than they fixed, namely V6 Supercharger and KAK.
nope, no scripts. I did flash CM10 over CM9, and the same issue existed in CM9 so maybe it's just carried forward from that. Maybe I will have to sbf and start from scratch as suggested.
thanks
If you just simply flash a ROM over another without wiping data/cache/dalvik, you will most likely experience these types of problems. I would try first what was suggested above, wipe cache and dalvik. If nothing works SBF. I would say to flash the ROM again but we cant flash ROMs once in CM10.
I suggest wiping your SD/Phone memory, Wiping the Cache, and Dalvic cache and see if stock Gingerbread is still laggy.

[Q] Upgrade from Honeycomb?

Fell off the upgrade bandwagon on the Tab, because it was just going so well it seemed with Task's 8.0. (I know, back in the stone age) I was considering upgrading, but when I was, the rolling screen issue was popping up in threads, followed by the CAP_ERASE issue... so continually fell by the wayside. Plus the S3, S2, and Note flashes were keeping me busy enough.
I am currently on CWM 4.0.0.4 with Pershoot's 2.6.36-4 kernel and want to know what I should do to upgrade to ICS, or even to an AOKP JellyBean. (Probably the ICS is more desirable, as it would appear that from what I've read that JB has some issues that might be more problematic, but I'm game)
However, whenever I look at upgrading, it seems every ROM says coming from ICS... but what do I need to do to get to that point?
I can Nandroid the heck out of it, (unfortunately, with no sdCard, it makes taking the Nandroid and putting it in a safe place a pain) and then I'll go from there, but want to avoid making a slab out of her...
Any plausible routes gladly accepted!
Ross
i dont know if you would want to upgrade from Honeycomb cuz the battery in ICS is terrible terrible. I am considering downgrading, yes you heard it right, downgrading cuz of the battery woes i have. If you really want to, i would suggest, try this.

I don't think he's using a P7500 since he was from task's ROM.
If you want to upgrade, I recommend you start clean by flashing stock ICS first. Then, flash recovery of your choice, currently there's cwm 6.0.3.1 and twrp 2.5.0.0. Then, root your device and then start testing ROMs.
