rundown:
Flashed skanky's cm10 onto the phone. Had been running great but performance was deteriorating. Some apps weren't working well. Previously I had cm7 on the phone so I decided to revert into that.
Booted into recovery
installed rom from mem
installed and popped up
seemed to be working fine, all my contacts would show and i could communicate over network. However, phone randomly would reboot. No warning, could be navigating in an app or anywhere....just boop....reboot.
tried to re-install once again from recovery, now I'm stuck after the samsung logo it has the "galaxyS cyanogenmod 7" logo. I'll see it flash...blank screen...then it pops up again and freezes there.
problem....can't boot into recovery
problem....installed USB drivers but still have an "unrecognized smBus and USB controller"
(which I'm sure leads to)
problem....odin doesn't recognize my device
aannn
problem....neither does sda with a "sda devices" command
suggestions?

Hi all
I have a problem with my hero not being recognized by my PC. This happened after a weekend trip and i charged the phone with iphone USB adapter as i lost my one and now after returning from my trip i connect my hero to my PC to be greeted with the "USB Device Not Recognized" message.
Also my Amon_Ra recovery i used has been wiped and i cant get into recovery or install any rom at all.
I am thinking this might be the same USB brick that affected some Desire owners but i am not sure.
So please if anyone can help me, please do.
Thanks in advance.

this happen to me. What i did was switch my phone off, plug in the usb and switched it back on. then wait for windows to say it not recognised. then go to to device and printers and uninstall the drivers for the phone. Disconnect and reconnect the usb back to the phone and it it will pick it up.
Can you try booting in fastboot and tell me if that is recognized?
it still doesnt recognize it in fastboot

Sounds like its just a driver issue. Have you tried plugging it in, when you get that message open DEVICE MANAGER,... Find the yellow "!", right click it, uninstall, unplug phone, reboot PC.
.... Then use BTDAG's [Guide] How to Setup Correct Hero Drivers (for x86 & x64 users)
I hav the same problem. In recover mode it works but then turn on the phone, there is no popup options as before. Tried around with drivers but didnt work either. But found a solution which is very convenient. I dont know if it works on other ROM versions but I'm on 2.1 (Villain10).
- Install extended control widget (dont remember where I got it but you can google, it seems I cannot find it on the market)
- Add this widget to the home screen: Menu/Add to Home/Widget/ Extended Control bar (you can choose the size from 1x1 to 1x4) then select "Mass storage" at the bottom, apply.
Now you have a widget to turn on/off USB storage. When you connect Hero to the PC, just click on this widget then the PC will connect to the SD card, and click one more to turn it off.
ok i will give that a try

i have tried everything. changed the cable, used different pc but nothing works. i think is a hardware problem, something might be broken inside or something like that

No i havent and i gave up trying because i dnt think there is a fix for it. if yours is unrooted and the warranty is still valid you should consider returning it to HTC maybe they might replace it
got the same problem. Any solution so far ??

Did you try that?..... You need to do the reboot PC/Laptop after uninstalling ALL HTC drivers! Then when you reboot PC, plug phone back in, should say "not recognised" again,... then follow BTDAG's guide. T'is definitely a driver issue!
tried flashing 3 roms, modaco, radug and now kimera... none working.
can connect in fastboot, it shows up in device manager as android 1.0
ive tried 3 different usb cables and 4 differet pcs, still there is no response on my phone !!!
using villian rom 10.0 rite now.
okay it boots up into fastboot and fastboot usb shows up on the screen in red,
BUT when i use the "adb devices" command in adb it doesnt show the device,
it is showing as android 1.0 in devices and printers (windows 7)
You need to use....
fastboot devices
....when your are in fastboot.
What happens when you go into your recovery, select "Toggle MS/USB" with USB connected to PC?
okay
fastboot devices command shows some serial number.
then i tried adb remount, it gave an error....
enabling usb-ms with cable attached gives no response
ok i think it might be USB driver like ddotpatel said but i am not sure.
i reinstalled my whole windows 7 to 32bit now instead of the 64bit version i was using before and today i just connected my hero to my PC and windows 7 did its thing and installed the drivers and finally my hero can mount the SD card in my PC again although i kept getting this can perform faster in USB 2.0 port or something like that i didn’t care as long as i can mount my SD card again.
now went into fastboot and used the fastboot device command and i could see my hero serial no. but when i try to flash the amonra recovery i got the permission error (i cant really remember). i tried flashing using the adb method but still no luck.
so i went to market and downloaded rom manager and used it to flash clockwork recovery and now i could boot to clockwork recovery.
from this recovery i can now flash any rom i want and although there are still a few more problems i am glad now that i can flash custom roms again.
the problem i can see so far but i can deal with is
1. i don’t think fastboot commands work even if the phone is detected.
2. SD card mounts at USB 1.1 speed. (i have tried different ports and cable but still the same thing and this is the ports i use for my N1, Desire and my other android phones with USB 2.0 speed)
PS: adb commands for pushing and removing apps is working.
Hope this can be helpful to those experiencing the same problem.
Instead of re-installing your entire OS just use usbdeview to remove the failing drivers.
Also remove any old HTC Sync installs and install the latest version.
Hey everyone,
I have been using XDA for a while now but this will be my first post.
In the past I have had nero v5, bionix 1.3.1, Cyanogen Mod 7 on my vibrant and now finally ICS Passion.
Everything has been working fine with ICS, however after flashing I cant mount the sd cards on my computer. It charges fine, but when plugged in it it says: Device drivers not installed. In addition there are two unfamiliar beeping noises (not like usual recognition and disconnection sounds)
Under device manager there is a yellow exclamation mark and it says: The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28). I have tried installing samsung vibrant drivers and nexus drivers from samsungs site, neither worked.
I want to keep using ICS, is there a way to get my phone recognized?
Thanks,
Makq
Nexus s drivers from Google http://developer.android.com/sdk/win-usb.html
Put phone in recovery and try to mount from there

Ok so I installed SDK, loaded the package, installed the drivers, rebooted into recovery and then the phone was recognised as android composite ADB interface. At this point mounting in recovery mode lead to two removable disks. Clicking on them promts 'insert a disk'.
After rebooting the phone it is again recognised as SGH T959 and windows tries to install drivers, it fails and the problem is the same as before :S
Stay with it. I loaded sdk and it took 2 days for my computer to find the right pathway. I didnt do anything else just plugged it in and it 'suddenly' recognized new hardware. Follow the op to the letter.
If you have Kies mini on your computer be sure and delete it, it will interfere, dont ever use it anyway
Hmmm...I flashed V11 last week and I just tried to mount my phone for the first time this morning and it worked like normal. I was able to access my internal SD card. I don't have an external card in there right now so I can't confirm if I can access that one yet. I haven't installed anything else on my computer, it is just using the standard Vibrant USB drivers that I had installed for Froyo (Windows 7 64 bit). Did you have those drivers installed previously? Maybe try re-installing them again. I got them from this link in the forum. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=728929
Plug in your Phone then go to device manager and uninstall drivers for your phone . Unplug your phone and plug it back in you drivers will be installed again .

Agreed this is probably your best bet. Actually when I updated to v11, for whatever reason my pc downloaded and installed drivers automatically like it was a new phone... go figure

I am trying to relock my phone and install the newest RUU to get the firmware updates and I have hit a wall.
When I plug in my phone everything is peachy when its booted up and running. When I reboot into fastboot and plug in the phone it is not being recognized by my computer. I have made sure that while booted debugging is on, charge only, and everything is just as it was when I rooted(besides a different ROM). The phone isn't showing up anywhere, not in device manager and not in the devices/printers area. It will however still power the phone as it will stay on even if I pull the battery. I am running Windows 7 64. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Also I have tried uninstalling and installing the phone drivers in device manager and restarting everything over and over, nothing is working.

the problem might be from usb cable.
try another one if you have.
Got it, I believe it was a driver issue, but I went through several things so not sure what finally worked...
This sounds so noobish, but I can't get the Samsung Android drivers to properly, effectively install on my Windows 7 (64bit) workstation. Whenever I connect my newly purchased (used) AT&T Samsung Galaxy S2 (SGH-I777) to my Win7 computer, I get a USB not recognized error message. When I fire up Kies, it tells me that no devices are connected. When I run ODIN 1.85, it doesn't show anything connected. I've rebooted the PC multiple times.
I can boot my phone into download mode, but I can't get it into recovery mode. If my USB drivers would work, I would reinstall the stock ROM, but it won't connect. If I could get it into recovery mode, I would install a ROM from a zip on the SD card.
What do I do next?
Sounds like your micro usb port is busted or dirty

Thanks for your reply. I'm not sure whether it was causal or coincidental, but despite many reboots of my PC, on my last reboot (after I posted this thread), Windows notified me of 17 Microsoft updates to install. I let it install them (no idea what they were) which took over 20 minutes, then it powered off. On booting up, it did more automated install stuff, then finally booted up. After doing all this, I was able to get the phone into recovery mode and flash from a zip on the SD card. Again, it may be nothing but rabbit's foot and holy water, but my immediate problem is fixed (my phone is working).
But I still can't connect by USB....
Hello,
my device (i9300) as mentioned above got stuck in a boot loop.
First I did was I installed the latest pac-man ROM from here. After successful testing I decided to flash the latest OmniRom 4.4 from here.
Now here comes the dilemma with: My Failure was that I had a old Recovery (CWM-based Recovery v5.5.0.4) and I didn't see the point where it says that I have to update it first.
My USB Connection to my PC was already broken before I started to flash any of the ROMs. So I can't connect to the PC to flash via Odin. It fails on the driver installtion. (I copied everything in my cloud and downloaded it to the internal sd)
The Device Manager shows alwas a ! in a yellow triangle near the "Samsung Mobile USB CDC Composite Device" (Download Mode) with a errer code 10: Device cannot start. I did millions of solutions but nothing worked against this issue ...
Currently my device starts where the Samsung galaxy s3 logo pops up, get stuck by that with a red 1 on the upper left corner and boots into the "old" recovery.
This is my Problem. Please help me to fix this (and the USB bug).
Thank you very much
Kind regards,

To fix the USB bug, you must uninstall that driver and download the driver ( try to install kies for example )
To fix the bootloop try to do a full wipe in recovery mode

None of your advices worked. I did unistall all drivers and also Kies. Reinstalled and it doesn't worked. So I uninstalled it again and installed only the drivers but this didn't worked too.
Everytime I uninstall the drivers and connect the device to the PC it is trying to Install the Drivers over Windows Update and Kies isn't reacting at all.
Now since I wiped data/factory reset, cache partition, dalvik cache and formated /system and /preload my device won't start automatically in the recovery anymore. It get stuck on the Samsung Galaxy SIII Logo with the red 1 in the upper left corner. To Access to the Recovery I have to take the battery out and and insert it again and press volume up + home + power.
What can I do now?
Thanks in advance

I tried this now on my Desktop Computer and it worked fine. I didn't need to install drivers manually. It installed it by itself and therefore i was able to use odin!
I flashed the new recovery and put the omnirom and pa-gapps on my sd card (I also tried this on my notebook but my card reader is maybe broken)
so i installed teamwin recvovery over pc, put rom and gapps on my sd card and flashed them over recovery.
Now all works fine.
Thank you for your help.
But what I don't understand is my Win 7 OS (32 bit) is recently set up on my VM everything was fresh but it didnt recognized my device... Google says a lot of people are having this issues. I've tried everything whenever I found allegedly a solution for this problem. None of them worked. I simply switched the computer and everything is fine. This is ridiculous. One year ago, when I had running windows as main OS, there were no problems at all. If the problem was caused by a virtual machine I think that not many people would complain about this issue.
Kind regards
Why would old Win 7 recognize your device unless you install drivers .

I don't really understand your comment. The Problem of this USB error has no root. When your Windows System says error code 10: device cannot start then you have a big problem because you don't know why and how to fix this. Try and Google this. You will find thousands of people complaining the same error. Everyone has other solutions for that. Some edit their registry, others simply do a soft-reset and try another USB-Port.
Samsung support can't help you at all because they don't know why this is happening. And the solving of this problem is really random. i tried for hours to solve this with no success (except switching to another computer).
Windows says on my laptop the device cannot start but it is perfectly connecting to my other computer. How can this happen? I don't know. Maybe the error code 10 is not that specific and there is something other wrong than my device.
