Flash A Recovery .img File From Recovery
Snuzzo has asked me to post this recovery flashing tool. It will let you insert any recovery that you use (must me the .img file) into the zip with 7 zip and then have a flashable recovery installer.
This eliminates the need to fastboot flash recovery or to use a PH98IMG.zip and flash from hboot.
Instructions:
1.) Place the recovery.img of your choice into the folder named "recovery" (Hint: It Says "put.recovery.img.here" in the folder where it goes)
2.) Place the zip onto your external sd card (ext_sdcard)
3.) Boot to recovery and flash the zip file
4.) Device will reboot, reboot manually if using TWRP and auto reboot doesn't work
This is snuzzos work not my own, I'm only posting it for him.

Disclaimer: If you break, shatter, or brick your phone using this installer, we take NO responsibility. If you have random reboots, your phone sparks or smokes, or your wife divorces you, those are matters we refuse to be liable for, take up with Dr. Phil.
Might post an s on auto reboot version of this later.

I just rooted using a guide for the revolutionary method. It says the .exe is supposed to ask if you want to install clockwork after it obtains s-off & it never asked me. I do have s-off but no recovery and no superuser as well. I searched this problem and found answers. I found a zip & renamed it to PG86IMG.zip on the root of my sd or whatever & tried to install it but i don't think it worked. I've tried to go into recovery & all I get is an image of a phone & a red triangle. I have a clockwork img now but I have no idea how to install it & i tried to go to my sdk but all my laptop says it has is sdk manager & it won't let me enter any commands. I've been reading for hours & I'm stuck. Any help would be appreciated if anyone knows & thanks
Download this file and rename it PG86IMG.zip and place on the root of your sdcard. Its twrp recovery, which I prefer to cwm
http://db.tt/aShyeKO9
Now turn off phone and boot into the hboot and wait for it to check for update files and follow instructions to install. I think its up for yes and down for no, and wait for it to install. Then reboot and delete the file from your SD card. You should be able to boot into recovery now. Then flash this fixed su found in the twrp recovery thread.

Make sure you don't have the file named as PG86IMG.zip.zip
If you have file extensions turned off in Windows you may have done that by accident. If you have file extensions hidden just name is PG86IMG without the .zip part.
You're also probably trying to flash a recovery on an HBOOT v1.5 phone; I've had no luck flashing it with the aformentioned .zip method try using fastboot to flash the recovery:
(On windows)
fastboot flash recovery [whatever the name of the file is].img

If you're not familiar w/ fastboot and such see the following thread:

This was actually the issue. I put the .zip in there when I really just should've put PG86IMG so it wouldn't have .zip twice. Thanks for the help guys

OK so here's my problem. In a nutshell, I was using my dude Chingys ineff. Made a backup n flashed the clean ics with its own flashable boot.img after the flash. I made a restore and tried to go back to ineff. Well clearly that's a problem without the right boot image. I flashed one I had with my fingers crossed and that wasn't the correct one. Now I can't even do a fresh install of clean ics because its boot image won't work now. Chingy is away from his PC and can't dropbox it to me. Can anyone help me with this so I can flash it without my PC (I'm at work) and restore my ineff backup? Please n thanks community! =)

boot.img is in the ROM file. Just use a zip program to open the file and it will be right there. You'll need to use ADB to push the file to your phone, can't flash a img file. Or use Scott's CleanFlash program.

Sorry, didn't see you wanted something without a computer.
Have you tried reinstalling CleanICS. It's set up to create the flashable zip file for you.
Edit: Here is a post on how to create the flashable zip file.

I don't use ineff so I don't have the boot.img file for you.
afaik all you need to do is copy the boot.img and androidinfo.txt from the rom and zip it as PH89img.zip on the root of your sd card and flash through hboot
I'm having the same issue. I was on BAMF ROM and tried to install Clean ICS. The install went fine but the fastboot failed. Said the IMG was older.. tried other roms and the only way I could get my phone to boot up was to do a clean install of the BAMF ROM.
Not trying to hijack the thread just don't get why any of the ROMs I tried all fail the fastboot IMG except for the BAMF ROMS.

From my understanding BAMF ROM must be using a newer revision number and that is why you fail. Are you flashing from HBOOT or computer using fastboot? I thought you could push an earlier file through the computer.

That's because the new hboot cannot flash kernels. Easiest method is to download flashgui from the market which will flash the kernel for you.
Thanks for the quick response... so all i need to do is download the app flash a kernel and then flash the rom through twrp???

4. Open flash image gui and navigate to your rom zip file
5. Make sure "kernel image" is selected
6. Make sure both caches are selected
7. Then hit "flash image"
8. You will be prompted to reboot
9. In twrp wipe as normal and flash your rom zip
10. Reboot & Profit!

I'm having the same problem, except I've already wiped my rom so I can't load anything up to go into the market. what should I do? I'm on Hboot 2.09, I've got twrp 2.4.4.0 on there.

Do you have ADB set up on your computer?
The advice is free....the bandwidth, not so much

Download a rom to your computer. Place the rom.zip in the folder where you have adb. Also, extract the boot.img in the same folder. Open adb on your computer using command line and boot into fastboot on your phone. Use the cd command to change folders to wherever your adb is located and type adb devices to make sure you are connected. Then type fastboot flash boot boot.img. Once you do that you can push the rom zip using a different command that I forget. Even better than reading my response, search Google for "flash boot rom fastboot evo 4G lte" there's an xda thread that walks you through it.

title says it all. I'm not sure where to find the latest boot img
help? links would be best.
The boot.img from the latest stock rom? Can't you unzip the rom and get it or use flash gui?
can't use flash gui, phone is stuck at boot.
I'll try unzipping, thanks!
I'm not too familiar with ADB stuff but you might need to use that. There's guides for that in the dev section.
Extract the kernel from the Rom you flashed. Once you have the boot image, place it in you adb tools folder or SDK and connect to pc. Open the terminal and navigate to the folder and type fastboot flash boot boot.img
Well there ya go!
werd. Ok, I'm working on it. Thank you.
You misspelled word.
You misspelled "I'm a grammar nazi.".
I couldn't resist...
Well then, shouldn't the "g" and "n" be capitalized? - "Grammar Nazi":silly:
I am a grammar Nazi, and proud of it!
I have a program called boot.IMG flasher in Original Dev that has the latest boot.IMG, modules, and will even flash it for you if stuck in bootloop or in bootloader.

Have to ask this as I'm completely new to android and installing new ROM's...
The instructions for a certain rom say: Reboot to bootloader to flash PH98IMG.zip if you were identified as S-ON.
Does this mean to let the bootloader preform the "update" it's found? Because it seems to do this automatically when I get into the bootloader....
thanks for helping!

I have never flashed a rom by flashing the PH98IMG.zip because for some reason it hasn't worked for me, maybe i just did something wrong.
What I do instead is extract the rom .zip on your computer. Then, put the boot.img file into the platform-tools folder in the android sdk (assuming you already have the android sdk installed). Then, flash the rom, then power the phone off, then press and hold power+volume down to boot into hboot. From there you select fastboot. At the top you should see fastboot usb in the red box. Then, type into command prompt or terminal (for mac) fastboot flash boot boot.img After that, just reboot and the new rom should boot just fine.
Idk if you have a mac, but this is the tutorial I used to download and set up the adb with my macbook. Its very easy, if you have windows, im sure you could google instructions.
When you put the ROM on your sd card, extract the boot.img and put it in a ph98img.zip file. Install ROM, go to bootloader and it should ask you it update. Update and you're good to go. Keep in mind I don't like using command prompts

To add onto that, depending on how you get to the bootloader, it may boot into fastboot initially. If so, just hit the power button on the BOOTLOADER option and it will do the rest.
I've read that the only way to flash a kernel with s-on from fastboot is you have to use adb. I guess when you reboot the bootloader from adb you gain access to the recovery partition but if your s-on just booting into the recovery doesn't work. I've decided to stay s-on (personal preference) and flashed multiple kernels with the zip. But back to your question is yes let the update go through and the kernel should be installed.
