Hey cool guys,
What in your professional opinion would you believe to be the best method to pursue? Should ICS users root before updating to JB or would you recommend that we update to JB and wait until root is released?
Thanks!
+1...i want to tether n get rid of all this bloatware (still on the latest ics software version e97011c)...im sure something will come out in the coming days/weeks till then I'm keeping it at ics

If you read through the various threads, many people have reported that the update retained their root. It's also reported that the universal root (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2181103) works for all versions. So it's really up to you. If it were me I'd root now and save a backup of root with vodoo ota rootkeeper before updating, if only because people at this point are more familiar with the ICS versions in case you have trouble.

Are you talking a nandroid or TiBu backup? If you're talking Nandroid, how do I make a backup? I'm rooted and otherwise stock. As I understand it I need to be freegee unlocked to use CWM or TWRP and that is how I'd make a full backup. I don't want to unlock just to backup, then have to relock and reflash. And if I'm completely off base, please kindly point me in the direction so I can relearn myself.

Use the freegee app. It works great and relock is a snap.

Is it possible to reload the stock OS, but keep Root?
On xda-developers website they have the Easy Root tutorial that does just what your asking.
Im keeping mine stock with root as well, I love Sense so I see no reason to change.

You will be rooted and already be on the stock release. Thats what im on now.
Im not sure about the one click methods..
thanks for the reply guys... I rooted, and installed a ROM. I dig the ROM, but wanted to go back to stock ROM to do some tweaks (or attempt at least, lol) myself and see how I do.
If I am not mistaken a RUU will remove root, right? Just wondering if there is a
PG05IMG.zip that is stock, but won't remove root...

Did you make a backup after you gained root but before you installed the rom? If so just nand back to that and you will have stock root. If not I would suggest remove root and redoing it so you can make a backup, then go from there.

Isn't the RUU in that thread a downgrade? I understand that must be flashed to gain root?, my question is after root can I flash back to the latest RUU and keep root??
If not what is missing from the RUU in that thread vs. the latest RUU?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1000448
it is stock and rooted and deodexed(for easy modding if you want in the future) comes in bloat free or bloat(and remove what you want)
flash it in clockwork recovery, this is what i use.
Cool...This i am going to try out. :-D Thanks!

It downgrades to get the phone rooted but when you put the final zip for it to update, it updates to the stock release with root. Im running the .06 version and did nothing but root it.
I really don't want a new ROM or kernel right now. I simply want to unlock, root, do a nandroid backup, install Titanium, and freeze bloat. All of this is covered through out this great forum so that's not a problem.
My question is, if I do all of the above and the official ICS update comes out, what would I be required to do to get the update? Since, I would still be essentially stock except debloated, would I just have to unfreeze the bloat? Or would I also need to unroot and relock?
Most of the discussions on the forum relative to the recent OTA were for phones with new ROM's or kernels. There was a lot of RUU and wiping going on, none of which I want to get involved with.
Please let me know what you think. I didn't think it could get any better than my Dinc but it has with the Rezound if I can just dump the bloat, although the Incredikernel was sweet on the Dinc. Thanks!
You would have to unfreeze the bloat and relock it (which is easy)
Based on the OTA that came out, one would think that you would just need to unfreze the bloat.
You might have to relock and if you do relock I think I remember it somewhere where it wipes your internal SD.
You will most likely lose root also, which is easy to get back.
Or you could just wait for someone like con247 to get us a rooted version.

I was all stoked when i found out the new official update came out .... then i realized it wasnt the ics update... and threw on one of the roms....
Hello
I've recently purchased a Transformer Prime, and this is my first non-HTC device (I've had the HTC Desire, Desire HD and now EVO 3D), so I'm familiar with Android and such, just not with tablets or Asus.
My Prime came preinstalled with Honeycomb (Android-version 3.2.1) & Kernesystem 2.6.23.3 [email protected] #1 & Versionnummer HTK75.WW_epad-8.8.3.33-20111223.
And it currently has a system update available which I haven't installed.
I'd like to end up with being updated to ICS (4.0.3 is the newest I believe?) with the newest updates, while having root. I don't wish to put custom ROM's on my tablet, I would still like to have it rooted though, so I can use Titanium Backup, SetCPU, AdFree, RootExplorer and such other root applications.
I've read a bit around, and it seems that there is no way to root .21 update, so I'll have to root it first, then use OTA rootkeeper (don't know the program/app, just remember the name from another thread) and then update my Prime?
Will I be able to keep taking OTA's even if I have Root, just by using the OTA RootKeeper?
And finally, what is the difference between Root and an unlocked bootloader? What can't i do without unlocked bootloader?
I hope someone can help me with this

You can still take updates while being rooted. If you want the latest update to be rooted, I'd recommend rooting while you're on HC, downloading Voodoo OTA Root Keeper, backing up root by selecting "protect root" or something to that effect, downloading and installing the OTA update, opening the Root Keeper app and clicking "restore root." It's pretty painless.
Root = enhanced permissions to run the applications you listed off.
Unlocked = ability to put a custom recovery on your device (ClockworkMod) so you can flash ROMs.

Thank you a lot for the information, very helpful
I do have 2 follow-up questions.
1)
Will the Voodoo OTA Root Keeper also work when updating from my current HC -> ICS, and not just when updating from (for example) ICS 4.0.2 -> ICS 4.0.3 ?
2) Which root method would you recommend? I see a few different ones in the development forum, but some might be better than others
Rootkeeper should keep your root, and i used vipermod. I think thats what it's called

ViperMod seems pretty straight forward, so I'll try that
Did you root HC with that, or ICS?
I rooted ics But before .21 you may want to root on hc before doing the update because i think asus will send you the .21 update

Crap. I just got my Prime and let it update itself to 21. Something told me I should've read up on rooting first.
I personally used the manual version of Tacoroot as soon as it was released, where you have to type in all of the commands and junk lol. The methods seem to have gotten way easier, but I haven't tested them out myself. I've heard good things about both ViperMods and Tacoroots automated rooting methods though.

if ics is coming out soon i need to be prepared,i can't seem to find out if ota rootkeeper will save root on my razr xt912,also if it can save me do i do temp un root or just leave alone.......................i have been following threads that say to temp unroot ,is this just for people wanting ics early
With past OTAs I just used OTA root keeper to backup root, applied the OTA, then restored root through root keeper app. Should work the same way with the ICS update. I've never had to use the temp unroot function.

you'll see the people installing the verizon version of ICS are keeping root with voodoo

update! later reports are that root is not actually there, even though voodoo says root was restored. i would guess the devs are on it right now though. Moto & Verizon are such asshats!
Just a heads up that from looking around it seems there is no root method on the new Jellybean Firmware that does not require a bootloader unlock, so if you are a user that does Not want to unlock their BL and still keep root, don't take the OTA.
The update broke the symlinking method found by Wolf, and I think that was the only working one. Correct me if I am wrong c:
Also, Can someone (Preferably one who doesn't care about bootloader unlocking) please confirm if the OTA rootkeeper works? (Voodoo)

If you unlock bootloader yes.
Upgrading from ICS to Jellybean, even while using Voodoo OTA rootkeeper, broke my root.
Although I might have done something wrong, I thought I had done it right, as I had used Voodoo when applying an upgrade to ICS at somepoint in time. That time worked flawlessly.
Since then, I have unlocked my bootloader and cannot be happier! There's work by great people on this forum into custom roms & kernels. Even some very close progress to a fully functional ARM linux, which I am especially excited for; I tried some of the original versions and it was quite impressive. Recovery projects (Im using TWRP) are also very, very, handy to have!
If you're in doubts, here's one anecdote to going beyond root, and unlocking your bootloader. It was worth it for me!
Did the OTA update to JB couple weeks ago and lost root (and rootkeeper backup as well). Now unlocked the BL and using energy rom. glad I did the unlock.
I rooted all the way back on Honeycomb, now on the latest stock (4.1.1), not unlocked, and still rooted (via Voodoo OTA RootKeeper)
At the time, OTA rootkeeper was able to restore my root when upgrading from ICS to JB (since then I've ROMed up).
Perhaps it was because just before the update I deleted the rootkeeper backup and re-created it.
