Dear community,
I've rooted my TFP using the guide from xda. To be honest, I didn't mean to, I read the guide and got carried away with it . Finally the root is good now. As a windows guy and with slight understanding of linux I'm pretty new to android.
My question is, now that my tablet is rooted, how can I take advantage of it? What are the recommended apps? Any known tweaks?

Search 'root' on android market.
Titanium Backup is useful, Ghost Commander or EZ file, there are also apps to remote control your tablet, you can use new launchers - trebuchet launcher or nova launcher on rooted devices.
You can also delete system files, so be careful.
The biggest bonus to rooting is being able to flash different roms like many of us do with our android smartphones. Flashing roms is currently not an option on the Prime but should or could be available in the future. Right now I don't think there's a whole lot to do with a rooted Prime.
While I haven't rooted my Prime yet, I'm only in day 6 and waiting until the "send it back" period elapses I rooted my moto Atrix2 almost immediately. I installed Titanium Backup as well as System Tuner, and a couple other root only apps. The primary reason for rooting the Atrix2 was to freeze Carrier ID as I don't care for ATT snooping on me with without so much as a by your leave. In any case I'll probably root the Prime just to get more control over what the device is doing when it's in standby. For instance I am hoping to be able to use Tasker to shut off the wifi after 5 or 10 minutes in standby in order to save battery power and turn it back on,when I wake up the tablet. Maybe find a way to create different, more detailed power profiles for different activities. I've done a lot of this on the Atrix2 and seen some significant increases in battery life because of it.

Incorrect, Rooting has nothing to do with flashing ROMs. Unlocking the bootloader on the other hand, has everything to do with flashing ROMs.

right. i don't think that any ROM can improve the already very good existing one from ASUS.
I haven't rooted my TFP, but I'm seriously considering doing so. The main reason is that most of (good) adbockers require root access. Loading all this rubbish adds, many of them being large flash animations, slows down browsing experience significantly. I want to get rid of them and the only way I know is by rooting Android.
For me about the biggest thing is "AdAway" or any other app for updating host file.
Never see one single ad on your device again. Less anoyance, faster loading times in browser, less data consumption ...

You've never used CM7 then... soon to be CM9.

First, an explanation of my situation:
I bought a Galaxy Note at the beginning of the summer. All-in-all, I was pretty happy with it. It was a much improved experience over my Atrix, which was in poor condition by the time I switched over.
I wasn't able to root at first as I only had access to a Mac, and there were innumerable issues in doing so - Odin was PC only, WINE ports of it failed to recognize the phone, the Mac equivalent of Odin (I am spacing on its name right now) didn't work with the Note, etc.
When ICS was officially released, I tried to update to it via Kies. Kies on Mac is a ****storm. It's incredibly buggy, toolbars and menus don't display correctly, it has trouble recognizing the device, etc. I was unable to get it to make a backup, but I eventually managed to load the ROM onto it...
... and that's when the real problems started.
My battery life has turned to crap. Everything runs incredibly slow. Everything's super buggy. Apps force-close all the time. My MicroSD card ended up getting corrupted - half of my music disappeared, of what was left only 1/3rd actually worked. I just reformatted my MicroSD, backing everything important up, etc.
I've been dealing with this for around a month now, as whenever I come to the forum I have no idea where to even start to fix this. I'm up for wiping everything and starting over, and I do have access to a Windows XP machine now so that may be easier... but I don't even know where to go from there.

That's why I'm here - I need advice. I need advice as to how to clean up the current mess my phone has turned into and start over. I need advice as to what ROM to try and how to go about loading it. I need advice as to whether to root and how to do so. I need advice as to whether to install a CWM, which one to use and how to go about doing so.
Here is what I am looking for, ordered from most important to least:
Battery life is important to me. I loved how long the battery lasted before my attempted upgrade to ICS... now it lasts maybe 1/3 of the time.
I want something that will work - I want stability. No more constant force-quits of every freaking app.
A smooth, fast UI would be preferable.
Feature packed. I like the thought of cutting edge features of newer (or custom) versions of Android being incorporated - but this is far less important to me than battery life and stability.
My preferred method of installation would be using my Mac - but as I said, Windows XP is a very easy option for me as well. I could also install a newer version of Windows if need be, but would prefer not to go through that...

Get Odin and root your phone...
Download and flash TWRP... http://teamw.in/project/twrp
download a ROM of your choice
boot into the recovery ..wipe--->>cache/dalvik cache/ wipe ROM/factory reset..>then go to the install and flash your ROM...
These are very rudimentary instructions I hope they helped a bit...good luck
Do you have an idea for what ROM you like or want? Couple of great ROMs..for stockish check out flappjaxxx's for jellybean check out manelscout4life..stable and fast

Techno is onto the correct answer, unless of course you are truly wanting the stock version back.
Kies and OTA updates are often flawed, and give the end user exactly the type of problems you are stating.
However, if you want a return to stock, the information can be found in the "note super everything thread" located as a sticky at the top of the general note section.
But I do agree with techno, that a root and flash of a quality custom rom is the way to go......g

There's such an overwhelming number of options out there, of basic flavors (ICS, JB, GB, CM7, etc.) and tens of derivatives of each one made by different people. I have no idea where to even start making such a decision.
I can tell you this much. On my Atrix, I started with the stock Motoblur-Froyo, flashed GingerBlur, disliked it's bugginess but dealt with it for almost a year, then flashed the CM7-based Neutrino. That is the best stockish ICS experience you can get and keeps all the functionality of your phone including the spen. He also offers a jellybean ROM but honestly to find the best JB rom for you just read through the threads read and REREAD THE OP of those ROMs..jellybean is fun and cool but not 101% stable yet..people still getting random reboots and some are losing there APN settings..so maybe just flashing ics and playing with those ROMs is best for you for now..FYI the above rom is smooth as silk and great battery life

Again , I agree with Techno, and the rom he posted is the one I'm using to type this.
Flappjaxxx is a fine developer, and he has packed this UCLF6 build with full functionality , and much more.
He is , and will continue to be my top pick for quality builds and performance ...g

I guess I have a few last questions:
What is the best way to root at this point? If I recall, there are multiple ways to root via Odin... is there a specific one you would recommend for my current situation (read: current buggy ICS firmware)? A link would be very much appreciated, as the roadmap thread is a bit... overwhelming with all of the options.
Are there any MODs you recommend I install after I have my new flappjaxxx ROM in place? Will tethering work off the bat? Will all of the Gapps (Gmail, Navigation, etc.) be there for me to use? Will I need to install anything else, or is there any recommendations that you have?

I've rooted my XTZ and unlocked the bootloader. I've used TA-Backup to backup my DRM Keys. I'm on the 4.1.2 stock ROM still. I love the tablet interface of this ROM, so I have decided not to upgrade it yet. Based on this, I had a few questions about the custom ROMs I've seen there and what benefit I have in updating at all, or perhaps the cons.

Are there any custom ROMs that use or have the tablet UI? They don't have to be based on stock ROMs.
Are there any ROMs that have a working IR Blaster?
Can I use any Sony apps in these custom ROMs and if so, where do I get them? I thoughtI saw them in the Apps and Themes forum.
Is there any reason I really need to go to a different ROM than 4.1.2? Speed benefits? Better battery life? Video performance?
What are the main reasons not to use a custom ROM?

If you are happy with the ROM usability and performance I see no reason to meddle with the ROM as it is. Personally I kmow what you mean, even with all the stock Sony apps it is quite a quick runner. I never had issues of lag or slowness. Whatever OEM bloatware is added is honestly not very much bloated, at lewst no comparison to a few years ago when basically your only way to get a lag and nagfree device was switching to a custom ROM. Also many features thought up by the dev community have in some way or another been adopted by the OEMs over time.
Might also be a matter of habit and perception. You see so many threads about this or that ROM develpment, like Cyanogenmod immediately after market release. This also made me try it once and I really disliked. And went back to stock. So, the scramble for custom ROMs for many people is NOT to avoid the crappy unusable stock ROM but rather the fact that they already have grown used to say vanilla Android or CyanMod. And I can totally understand them, I have been buying HTC phones for many years because I was so happy with Sense. To each his own and if you are happy, great.

4. I would take advantage of the official Sony upgrades unless there is something in 4.2.2 you totally hate. Sony has announced to upgrade at least through 4.3 and 4.4 and I will gladly check their stock updates out when they come. Speed benefits might exist, but I think on the negligible side... Maybe measurable with a benchmark but unnoticeable in normsl use. Battery life might be a tad bit better if less stuff runs in tne background, but if some Sony apps or whatnot bother you,much can be turned off under Settings/Apps and whats resilient can be disabled with TiBackup freeze mode. Ask if you need more detailed instructions. I have dumped all the Facebook / Twitter stuff and then some, and while it still is on the tsblet snd in the ROM it is just deactivated and takes no runtime resources.
Thank you, Walter_White. That information was exactly what I was looking for. I'm very satisfied with the performance and layout of 4.1.2. I don't much care for the change they made to the tablet UI in 4.2 so I'll likely wait until 4.3 is released and just upgrade then. My bootloader is unlocked though, so I guess I'll have to use the Sony PC Companion to upgrade and then lose root, unless someone figures that out beforehand.
If someone made an update for a custom ROM that had all my Sony applications and IR functionality, with the tablet UI, I would try it though. I'll also try finding the apps that could cause performance issues like you mentioned.

ive successfully rooted and rom'd phones a few times no issues there but there are so many things going on im lost
i have a few issues i hope i can get help with and a few questions that will come out of them issues
my phone gets pretty sluggish after time the phone wont open and using it makes it get hot pretty quick
i dont play any games on it or install many odd apps
mainly i use:
phone
camera
video camera
facebook
sms
and email i have 5 accounts i use 3 gmail a yahoo and an exchange from work
should i use a different kernel?
is the newest android the best thing i should use on it ?
i see that the non working features of some of the roms is things i need to use like the camera or hidef recording.
also i see different things on different forums i know its a strange question because im on here but is there a forum best suited for the razr maxx ive used xda for my lg my galaxy tab10.1 and now the maxx just curious
also is there a way to make it send the pictures to the external sd card using it fills the internal one up and it sometimes locks up completely as it gets close to full, then i have to connect it usb and move the pictures to my PC

Looks like you're running it on slim bean with 4.3.
If you want features like HD recording, then I suggest try some stock 4.1 based ROMs.
For storing images, you can find the option in settings. If you don't find it there, then you can swap your sdcards.

One big question to ask is do you use MMS (picture messaging)?
I say that because a lot of ROMS do not have it fully functioning, so that is something to keep an eye on. I am currently using http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2535920&page=45 on mine, and it is working pretty well, but some people are experiencing issues with MMS and bluetooth (I am not facing those issues. Also, take some time to look at kernel upgrades, like JBX http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2223517, these can greatly alter the performance of your phone for the better and add things back in like 720p video recording.

i do use mms from time to time i have noticed that a rom i used in the past was one of the ones that didnt mms after a few fights with people that i didnt ignore them lol
last night i tried flashing eclipse 1.5 but it wouldn't boot i think i was using the wrong version maybe? so today i reflashed slim spyder 4.3
why is it that the android 4.1 stock roms will work better than the highly modified custom roms ? isnt the idea of developing new features to make the best of the OS and hardware and have all the features without the BLOAT ? ( i made it look fat for effect hahah)
how do i swap the sd cards ? maybe a link, and will it help? im not sure because it saves them to the internal storage not the internal sd card i think and the phone gets all filled up nd then goes completely haywire

It looks like you are on SlimBean, so not a stock rom.
I don't know that I would go as far as saying that stock roms work better than highly customized roms, but there are a lot of "unofficial" or "alpha" build roms that just aren't finished. Those will inherently have issues.
Can you post the links to the threads that you got the rom from? There are a couple different options for your phone, depending on your carrier. It looks like you are on CDMA, so you need to make sure you are downloading those builds, not UMTS builds.
As far as the links go, use the first link to get the new rom, and load it through safestrap. If you need a tutorial on that, you can find it here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2427125
When you boot into safestrap, you will create a partition and install the rom, then reboot and enjoy!

The answer would be a very long story but I'll cut it short as much as I can.
Everything you said is absolutely right. But some of the reasons the custom ROMs doesn't work are locked contents by the manufacturer.
Locked bootloaders, locked libraries and many more. We're lucky that some devs actually devoted a lot of hard work to even make custom ROMs work on this device.
So our phone has a lot of locked stuff which is necessary for things like HDMI and HD recording to work. The custom kernel cannot access it.
So these features work with stock Moto kernel only which was based on 4.1
To swap sdcards, you need to edit the build.prop. I shall post the steps as soon as I have access to my laptop.

To swap sdcards. You will need a file explorer with root (E.S. Explorer or Root Explorer).
Go to system and open build.prop for editing.
Search for the line
Code:
#persist.sys.vold.switchexternal=1
Change it to
Code:
persist.sys.vold.switchexternal=1
(remove the #)
Save the build.prop
Reboot
My dad has GSII (I9100, the "original" S2) and it feels kinda sluggish compared to my One S C2(pretty much HTC Sensation) and it also lacks app space(I have moved all of them to SD card but still cant install new apps). Since I'm going to reinstall it I might aswell install some other ROM. It needs to be almost fully stable with all the features working and it would be nice if it had touchwiz(my dad isnt a power user and doesnt like to adopt to new things). I don't know how much faster non-touchwiz ROMs are so you can suggest some of those too. Also I don't really know yet how to install custom ROMs on GSII except for the stock one but I'm sure I'll find info on how to do that. Oh, performance and battery life should be balanced although my dad has 4 batteries

1. Neat ROM: is perhaps based on Touchwiz. Also, it has had a huge support. So, it should fit your Dad's expectations.
2. SlimSaber 4.4.4: I guess pretty much the best non-touchwiz ROM for the S2. And stable as well!
3. Go ahead and try out Lollipop ROMs as well, although they are still under work and can have some bugs: CM12.1, Resurrection Remix , BlissPOP, SlimLP and many more.

Big thanks for your help man! I think I'll try both of the ROMs you suggested, but not going to try lollipop because my classmate has GSII with it and its just too buggy. Gonna report back on how it went.

Try http://www.cyanogenmod.org/, that's how i started with custom ROM's, they have "idiot friendly" way of installing their ROM, you just install app form google store and follow setup proces, really easy. Very stable ROM also. I still use Cyanogenmod, bus some unnoficial lolipop version. I recomend it!
Slimsaber 4.4.4 by fusionjack. Would recommend it to anyone on XDA and to friends and family.

I know but for some reason I don't like Cyanogenmod...Its not always the fastest anyway.

Tried it but dad didnt like it so I installed him NeatRom and everything is working really well.
