Today, April 12th, 2013, Facebook Home was released into the play store for public use on a select few devices. However, many people are skeptical are wondering if this is going to be a worthwhile app to use to replace their home screen, and I’ll let you know right now.
The Good
- Interface: When scrolling through the pages and different pictures, the experience you get while using it is very good. If you’re looking for buttery smooth performance, this may be for you
- Chat Heads: Chat Heads are little bubbles that pop up whenever you receive a message (or SMS assuming you set it up in settings) through your Messenger app. You can move it all around your screen and they pop up no matter what screen you’re in. You can stack your messages together, or throw them all away. As well when you do click on the chat head, it comes up in a nice little pop up so you don’t have to leave the app you’re in. And of course, if you’re into emojis, facebook has most of them and they will pop up on your friends iPhone or your normal GO SMS/SMS app that also has the emoji codec.
The Bad
- No Dedicated Camera Button: You would think with Facebook relying very heavily on pictures it’d have a dedicated camera button in the corner of the screen or something, but no. You actually have to swipe up, go into apps, swipe right, then scroll and find the camera button and move it into your shortcuts. Kind of an annoying and unnecessary hassle.
- Better Search: So far, Facebook Home makes you have to keep scrolling and scrolling an endless amount of times until you may find content you are actually interested in. To find your friends you must go into the actually Facebook app itself to view specific people if you can find them on Facebook Home.
- More Features: I’m not too huge of a Facebook user. I reply more on Twitter, Google +, and Instagram. While the first two social networks are understandable not to have in Facebook Home, it’d be nice (since Facebook bought out Instagram) if you could make Facebook Home show your Instagram feed instead of your Facebook feed after going into the settings.
- Support: If you watched the event, Mark Zuckerberg mentioned he wanted this to be something everyone, on any phone, can use. But at the moment it’s only supported on the Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy S3, HTC One, One X, or One X +.
Final Verdict
While Facebook Home does a couple things right, it really needs to work on things still. At the moment, it’s more a beta than anything else. Hopefully in the coming months when Facebook does its scheduled updates, it’ll add more functionality and phone support so more people can actually use it. If you're really big on Facebook this is gonna be fore you. If you use Facebook to connect with a few people and the rest is a bunch of people you don't really care about then at the moment I'd probably steer towards sticking stock or using something like Nova or Action launcher Pro.

I tried this today.... i honestly felt it was a joke. That's my personal opinion. :/

I don't like Facebook home but the new bubble feature for the messenger is pretty cool.

I didn't like home either. The chatheads are pretty cool though.

While you liked the interface, I thought it was absolutely terrible. It failed at both of it's intended purposes for me. It's useless as a Facebook interface and it's useless as a phone interface.

I cant seem to get chat heads to popup on regular launcher? Under Facebook messager i do not have to option of enabling it. I am on the most current version of it 2.4.2release, Can the Note 2 not do this unless on 4.2.2?

What I mean by liking the interface, I mean the pictures and quality look quite nice. However, navigating through it.. not so pleasant an experience when getting to your apps, settings, into facebooks app itself, etc.

It didn't work for me right away either. Make sure you messenger is updated first of all (mine wasn't), but even after I did that it still didn't work. I reset my phone though and it seemed to work (make sure Chat Heads are enabled in the Messenger settings as well).

I tried it...Wasn't a big fan. I did not make it my home screen...just the lock screen. I left Nova home intact.
Uninstalled

Seeing as Facebook is mostly for tweens these days and looking at the comments so far, it just reinforces why I don't use Facebook.

I use it for my lock screen and chat heads. Still use nova for my home launcher though.

Does the note have a text messaging app similar to iphone?

Does the note have a text messaging app similar to iphone? I like how my wife's iphone has all the text pop up on her screen when it is locked. Does android have a similar setup? The iphone can pop up multiple text if they are not viewed right away. Thank you. I have never had a smartphone so don't know what android has to offer.
Just go to market and look at it. They're all like **** load of apps like that.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
But does it come with a stock app like that like the iphone has? I had a smartphone for about 2 weeks last year and found out that alot of apps don't always work properly.
Handcent in the market works pretty much perfectly doing what you want. The advantage of android over IOS is that if you don't like a stock application, odds are someone has written and published one that does what you want.

Get Go SMS Pro from the Android Market. Within this app there is an iPhone Theme. You can even tweak the settings to enable a pop-up or in the Notification Bar.

Lets talk ICS (not a ROM discussion)

Now that we have our first ICS ROM, lets talk about what we like and dont like about the newest Android OS. I dont know about everyone else, but I have never touched Android 4.0 before our latest CM9 ROM. I have only seen videos on it. So my eagerness to play with it was very high. Now that I have it, I must say, overall, its really nice. I love the UI. Even the phone and contacts app, which I didnt even care about in Gingerbread. The Speech to Text is pretty cool. And when I get a phone call, it looks much better than GB.
So what else is there? Anyone find any cool stuff specific to ICS? Any cool ICS apps? Nifty little tips and tricks?

Have you noticed that the LED turns color when plugged in based on the battery percentage? Dont know if this is an ICS or CM9 feature. I like it but I kinda wish it would turn of when fully charged though.

So thats what the yellowish green light was indicating. Light is green @ 100%. Awesome!
I am really happy with the build, as I have only tested ICS on the Kindle Fire and other more fortunate phones. My app set though is so specific that the layout looks exactly the same regardless of android version. Thats fine, I just wanted my purchase to be worthwhile

No, it doesnt turn off for me. Stays on until you unplug the phone. I tried using LEDs Hack to turn the light off for when I go to sleep. It works but when I turn it back on, my lights on the buttons stay lit. I need to restart to turn them off.
I only ran it for weekend, but as others have pointed out, the speed and accuracy of the speech to text is impressive. Apex, while not native, is also a really nice addition in the launcher category. I really hope to see it reach the level of "daily driver" so I can mess with it more.
I don't know if you listen to a lot of music but try that Apollo music player I posted in the cm9 thread really nice ICS look and from what I read its what they have been putting in the "official" CM9

Agrees and in all honesty I don't see why they don't...maybe the thought is if they are going to offer it as a free service(not the purchases but the upload and storage) then they have a right to control how you use it...not that I agree but I assume that's the thought process

The stock messaging app lacks LED customization but is elegant and practical. I say the same about the contacts (People) app.
ICS Browser + is a really cool alternate browser that has some nice features. Id suggest it to anyone looking for a new browser.
Boid is a Twitter app optimized for ICS that features some very stylish layouts, navigation speed and simplicity making its ease of access level very high. Its Beta-ness shows in its lack of push notifications and semi frequent failure to retrieve new mentions and tweets.

Unfortunately, you guys don't have Chrome yet. But I love chrome. It is awesome on a tablet. It is like using a PC... And pretty good on a phone too. The best feature is to send tabs from PC to phone or browse open tabs on PC!!!
I like the launcher in general, nice little touches here and there... The nicer recent apps layout. The better and cooler looking lock screen and incoming phone call screen. iPhone, you can kiss my sweet ass! Awesomer Email app... For some reason, the Email app in GB had no search feature (what!? ) and was dark themed, while Gmail had both search and light themed... Nice to see consistency and a easier on the eyes theme...
OH! How did I forget! The Gmail and Email widgets! I LOVE them! I use them all the time and they are effing scrollable!! Lock screen music controls are more awesome than GB (I use Google Music)... The circlemod battery icon (I dunno if your CM9 has it) is very cool! Folders are nice too...
Overall, it is awesome as an OS! Best version of Android, so far!

Users of SwiftKey3 AND Google Chrome

Do you get really annoying glitches with SwiftKey when you use Chrome?
Basically, when I'm typing something into a form, like just Googling something, I get these insane errors/predictions that I can only describe as repeated parts of words.
Example: if I'm trying to type "Plainfield public works" and I delete a letter or something, all of a sudden I have like "plaplaiplaiplaiplaiplaiplai" as a suggestion, and when I try to delete parts of it, it gets even LONGER of a word. Then when I delete the word, it always deletes more than just that stupid word so my whole sentence is messed up. I always have to switch back to HTC keyboard when using Google Chrome which stinks.
Again, this ONLY happens with Chrome, so it isn't a SwiftKey thing in general. I just typed all of this with no issues. I'll try to grab a screen shot of this issue...
Edit: I tried to type "this is so annoying" and didn't even try to backspace anything. This is what I got:

Yeah it drives me nuts. I love SwiftKey, and I love Chrome, so I hate choosing between the two. It's like choosing between Mountain Dew and Dr. Pepper...
I guess I love Chrome more because I've never considered using the stock browser. Since ICS makes switching keyboards so quick and easy, I just do that. I don't understand how a keyboard has issues with only one app though... This is way above my head. Would I report the bug to SwiftKey or Google?

Yeah I get this too, if I had to guess it has something to do with the instant search feature used by Google conflicting with the prediction of SwiftKey.
Try turning off instant search with Google and see if that helps.

Question to those who use stock browser: does SwiftKey still do this when typing in Google, or no? That would explain whether Google Instant is involved.

Thanks for the idea! I never thought about that, but it makes sense that those two things would be fighting one another. Since it appears to work on the stock browser when Googling, it must be app related. I'm not sure how to turn off instant search though. I'm actually not even sure it uses instant search...

I use Thumb Keyboard and while I didn't have this exact problem it definitely didn't work right with chrome. I kept getting kicked out of the field I was typing in or suddenly my cursor would move to the middle of the sentence, etc. I spent 20 minutes trying to finish 3 sentences before giving up.

Now that is very interesting... how can SwiftKey offer a fix if the problem isn't on their end?? Or, coincidentally, both keyboards happen to have made the same mistake in their code or whatever. Weird.
Yeah I've had this back even with the 3D, hated the issue because I love both products. So what I do is keep a stock ICS keyboard installed and then upon launching Chrome, Tasker brings up the list of keyboards and I select it. A bit of an annoyance? Yes, but both of the apps are too useful to be without.
(Also, if you're wondering why I don't just have Tasker automatically switch the keyboards, its because it can't :/ It's a security feature within Android that prevents "malicious applications from switching the user to their own IME". More info here. Kind of a shame but I do understand why it was implemented.
Hopefully either Swiftkey or Chrome get it resolved, wherever the issue lies.
I get that bug occasionally, as well as the keyboard not responding at all. It comes up, i hit keys and they light up as if i hit them but they don't get inserted, basically the whole input service locks up as i can't even switch keyboards. None of the other replacement keyboards i've used do this.
Yeah, this is a constant issue and forced me to switch back to stock keyboard.

[APP] S Pen Toolbox - screen off on S Pen attach

I wrote a simple app that turns screen off when S Pen is attached to the device. Samsung forgot to add this so I did.
Features:
* Custom sounds for S Pen attach and detach events.
* Show customizable actions list when detaching S Pen.
* Start any action, application or shortcut on detach (including S Note popup).
* Screen Off when attaching S Pen stylus.
* Smart Screen Off Mode - turn screen off on attach only if it was off when detaching S Pen.
* Return to Home screen when attaching S Pen stylus
* Create Screen Off shortcut on Home screen.
* no root required
Play Store: S Pen Toolbox
This application asks for Device Administrator permission. It is needed for screen off action. You will need to turn this permission off if you want to uninstall the application or Android will not allow to uninstall it. Simply click 'OFF' switch in application settings.

I think this is a good idea. Since you added the Spen detach function to GMD Spen Control I have set up 'detach' to open the right launch pad and 'attach' to switch the screen off.
Having this in a separate app would free up the launch pad for those who like lots of apps on multiple launch pads, or provide this functionality for those who don't want all of the other functionality of Spen Control.
I hope this helps you refine these really great apps!

Here it is, but it isn't quite the same thing. It works well for different keyboards.

New version 2.0
Uploaded new version.
2.0:
- Added customizable action list that can be shown on S Pen detach.
- Added option to create Screen Off shortcut on Home screen.
- Fix: purchased key should be handled properly now in all cases.
Trying now. Thanks.
Thanks for adding the action list that makes life easy now

Also is there any chance to make the action list stay around after exiting a action as I got to keep replacing the pen then taking it out to get the list up again cheers

I added option to show action list notification and it is on by default. You can click this notification to open action list. Any better suggestions how to make it open ? One idea was to add home screen shortcut, but then I opted for notification as it is accessible from any application.
Thanks for this tool Stupididea its fantastic
I'd like to make a quick suggestion to make this nice app even better :
The screen should be turned off only if it was off when I detached the SPen. Use case scenario: I'm working on the phone, I need to take the SPen out for some reason, attach it again and continue working. It would turn off the screen which would be annoying.
You need to remember the on/off status of the screen to override the turn off feature when SPen is attached. It should be simple I think. You can provide it as an additional feature - "Smart Turn Off"
Great app though Very useful.

Thanks, I will add it. So far plans for new version:
* Option to start application/shortcut/action on detach
* Add S Note popup action, that can be added to action list or started on detach
* Smart Screen Off.
Anything else?
if your phone is not root you can not uninstall the app.

You have to turn OFF the Device Admistrator permission in application settings. Its first setting. Then you can uninstall it. I really wrote it everywhere I could (XDA post, Play Store description, in app permission description). This is how this permission works, you cannot uninstall app while this permission is granted. If you check any other app that turns off scree, they all have the same "issue".

Great
Since this app is dealing with SPen detach/attach actions, is it possible for you to include custom attach/detach sounds from your app? I'm not sure about the implementation aspects but it's a much sought after feature and would save us the trouble of modding and/or flashing

Thanks for this! Will definitely be giving this a try when I get home from work.
Download done. Time to flash woo hoo
So far so good.
Edit; quick update report. For starters
Keyboard does not have swipe capabilities. (Tried google keyboard but will not allow any other keyboards to load)
Cannot get voice typing to stay ticked.
Could not get other languages to check off for downloads even though they show in settings.
Button row led lights do not work will not hold check in settings (after reboot started working correctly)
Request:
Is it possible in the dialer keypad instead of the bottom left button accessing voice mail can it be made to go to messaging. (holding 1 goes to VM why would we need 2 ways to go to VM :silly: )?

I plan on making an add on that removes qslide as I know it's not for everyone.
The black status bar is just a couple pngs inside the apk that where changed. You can change them yourself. Essentially an apk is a zip file. I recommend using 7zip and explore the apk. The images are in /res/drawaple-xhdpi. I get you the names of those images 2moro or create a metamorph

The OP says to change lock screen wallpaper just open gallery and set as then select lock screen wall paper. Not really an issue but a bug to fix none the less. 2 camera apps are because one is stock LG and one is 4.2 ASOP. So you can use whatever you prefer. Great rom

Been looking forward to trying out another stock ROM. Loved your stock based kernel but not being able to switch between LTE and HSPA was a deal breaker for me lol. Can't wait to try this out! Great job as always, ME.

Yes i plan on fixing the lock screen wallpaper force close. To me that's just something minor since i use personal pictures ( nothing like seeing my old lady butass naked everytime i turn on my phone ). I even thought about just removing the option from the lock screen
Settings.
The 2nd camera is from 4.3 n has working photosphere that so many wanted. The problem for me is the 4.3 camera is missing hrd witch I use allot. So I kept the stock camera.

Now you can switch between the 2. Eventually I want to add a toggle to the notification area. The ROM is 90% optimized. There is not much more I can do for performance. I'm working on the last 10% ( PNG optimize every apk ) before adding more features n this fives you guys a chance to find bugs for me to fix.

Is it possible for you to add "WCDMA/LTE Auto" and "LTE only" to preferred networks? I hate having to manually switch back from GSM all the time to LTE or WCDMA.

So you don't want to use gsm at all? That doesn't make sense. "Gsm/wcdma/LTE" will have better reception. For example: I only get gsm inside my house. By disabling gsm I would have no service. Outside I get hspa+ n if I travel down the road I get LTE. My phone grabs what it can. Now the people that don't get LTE at all would want to use gsm/wcdma so the phone stops looking for an LTE connection in return should help with battery. LTE is to spotty for LTE only and LTE is only used for data and switches to wcdma or gsm for voice. So LTE only would disable the ability to make n receive phone calls.
