[Q] How to "overclock" - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello good people of xda, and sorry for disturbing you.
My question for you is as following: Is there any way to overclock your S3? Overclock as in squeeze that extra juice from the hardware in order to run games much smoother without frames droping and what not. (i.e Real Racing 3)

..

Very helpfull reply...

Overclocking is a kernel function - read up in the dev threads and all the kernels have to offer - though OC'ing comes with it's issues! BE CAREFUL!

Ha that's epic, never seen that before ( I live under a rock)

you will need a custom kernel like Perseus , with that you will have an extra app called Stweaks which will let you overclock. i have successfully overclocked to 1704mhz with that.

Stop answering he has everything needed...

[Q] Is it worth to overclock right now?

Right now the jump between 1ghz to 1.1ghz shows no real world benefit. I have a couple of questions:
1. Does overclocking to 1.1ghz effect the battery enought to see a difference?
2. Does undervolting save battery enough to see a difference?
3. If i have a custom kernal but still running at 1ghz, will the battery be the same/worse/better then runnning 1ghz on stock kernel
4. Does undervolting have any negative effects on performance

Not trying to be rude, but does not answer my question. Why go through the procedure when someone who has already done it or has experience with it is kind enough to post answers.

1 Yes it does, but the phone only uses that frequency when pushed to limits, so not much.
2 Yes, i believe it does.
3 I found faux kernel to drink my battery like water even oj stock clock. Edgan's didnt have that problem.
4 it may cause random reboots if ur UV lvls are beyond the phone's capabilities.
Ps1: hes got a point, all impressions are too personal, they dont translate to universal experience.
Ps2: the greatest use of OC on the atrix right now is the webtop, that really pushes all possible processing power.

[GUIDE]Overclocking, its benefits and risks for Ace

For the convenience of writing,Overclock shall be referred to as OC.
So,the Ace has started recieving OC kernels, which is a good thing but OC is dangerous too.I decided to make a thread and warn all users who don't know much and overclock. So,with this thread,I intend to educate all newbies about OCing before users start bricking their phone.
I shall write about overclocking, what overclocking does and then discuss abotut the various advantages and disadvantages it comes with
WHAT IS OVERCLOCKING?
Overclocking is the process of operating a computer component at a higher clock rate.In our case, the processor. Most people overclock their phones for perfomance but this so-called perfomance comes at a price which every user who oc should know about. So,I am going to discuss it
Android phones are clocked at a safe level when we buy it.However,we exceed this 'safe level' when oc it.
ADVANTAGES OF OVERCLOCKING:
1.Perfomance-OCing gives perfomance and thats what most people go after when they oc.
2.Cost-saving-Some people who have extensive knowledge about OCing do it to save money. For eg-Some people claim that they can get clock speeds upto 1GHz
when they oc.SGS has a clock speed of 1GHz(but when they overclock, they get better speeds I just put this one in so that people can have better knowledge)
DISADVANTAGES OF OVERCLOCKING:
1.Excess heat production-OCing produces more heat, nothing to be added
2.Lifespan decreases-By overclocking to extreme levels, you are actually killing your phone.Because of the excess heat generated, some interior parts may get damages.
3.Damage to GPU-Because of the heat generated(i think)
4.Excess Battery consumption-Because of the intense heat generated and the unusual number of charge cycles, battery consumption becomes high.As you might already know,Ace's battery is really suckish. With OC,its going to be even worse.
5.Permanent effects-If you were having weird effects when you OCed for a long time, you are not going to feel much better when you right-clock again
6.Instability-Stability levels of various phones vary Some get OC speeds near 1GHz while others are having trouble getting over 900MHz
7.FCs,Reboots and other errors-You have a chance of getting constant reboots and FCs when you OC,it depends. Some have even complainde of their touchscreen having complains when they switch to OC kernel
FINAL WORDS:
IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING,DON'T DO IT
OCing experiences/Suggestions:
Valakas:
Im used to OCing almost all the PC's i had, and my SGA wasnt an exception but sadly i didnt notice any huge improvement in the performance or in the lags i had in some huge games.
OC is a good way of wasting battery life and perhaps burn your phone. i wouldnt advise anybody to do it because its just not worthy.
P4qui7o:
I better get a new and stronger phone instead doing this !
Anyway you're phone is gonna "howl" some day after OC, and if you don't have money to buy another one, you've better keep it at 800Hz, stock ... my opinion
Yukinok25:
I have been OC's my HTC HERO since I bought it (2009), it's an old ARMv6 525mhz, which I pushed to 710mhz/MAX.
I NEVER had any issue for my OC's, I obviously can say that it becames maybe slightly warmer than the stock clock but nothing near hot.
Thanks to this, my Hero is running all the lastest rom with no lag for this two years, and so the other people in the Hero forum (basically 90% of the people OC's).
I am agree with the opener that OC's could be dangerous and it might decrease the lifespan of your device, but I also think it depends on the hardware, and I am not agree when I just read is "not" useful, because it DOES give a huge boost to your device.
Besides you can undervolting your CPU when your smartphone is in Idle (my MIN is 19 mhz), so the heat won't be generated anymore, you will save battery life, and the paradox... you will extend the life cicle of your CPU.
Also keep in mind that developers are improving the OC's working on new governors and kernels all the time.
There are risks also when we flash a rom or a new radio version, but that doesn't mean they are not useful. We flash them because we want to enhance our devices
Pardon me,if there are any mistakes, technical or grammatical,if i have missed anything.
Thanx to Wikipedia,PujitJuneja and Google
P.S. I didn't copy-paste it from anywhere, wrote it all down. So,a click on the thanks button will be greatly appreciated
Cheers
I think this was a good piece to explain risks and rewards of OCing.
All d noobies should take a look at this.

Great work!
And to add to this maybe..
The battery will get effed up pretty soon coz of the rapid discharging and the more than usual number of charge cycles and also the heat
Im used to OC almost all the PC's i had, and my SGA wouldnt be the exception to that rule. But sadly i didnt notice any huge improve in the performance or in the lags i had in some huge games.

[Q] Need guidance... What's the exact use of overclocking your cpu?

Hi people,
This thing is really bothering me a lot! I know what overclocking your cpu is but I really don't understand what's the exact advantage and disadvantage of it?
I mean when should we overclock our devices? While charging? While doing multitasking? Or while playing games?
Please.. I need some guidance on it!
Thanks in advance!

overclocking actually increases your processor speed so basically you overclock when u r playing HD games or while multitasking...
Disadvantage ...
you may damage your hardware if u constantly overclock.... so be very careful while overclocking....

While charging?? You think it will charge up faster?
Anw, as much as it's good, it's bad.
It's "same" in PC's and phones, why I say "same"? PC have one advantage, we call it cooler and vent's.
To get better info on OC: http://lmgtfy.com/?q=overclocking+pros+and+cons
Overclocking is basically making your phone's processor faster than it should be.
Advantages: Faster phone.
Disadvantages: Short life span of phone
Normally, if I overclock, I only increase it to a little more than My processor's stock speed and set the governor to ondemand. Ondemand means only if your phone requires more power it will use more. Be careful though, and DON'T go crazy with the overclocking
You only need to know one thing for overclocking
Never do it if you don't lag like E#@.
I am on stock Rom, kernel.. Rooted.. Locked BL. I underclock my phone frequently. Sometimes I overclock to 1ghz. Wil it damage hardware and cause less lifespan

Read definition of overclocking
1GHz is not overclock, since its made to work on 1GHz by default.
Besides it can't damage it if (again) its made to work on 1GHz.
Does overclocking consumes more battery ?

yes :crying: it does consume more battery as cpu always remains at higher frequencies so all the androidians keeps there devices a bit underclocked so to have a good battery life!!

using ExTweaks?

I've looked around and can't find any info at all,
I play Gangstar Rio City Of Saints on my sgs2 but I experiance a lot of lag issues.
I'm hoping over-clocking/ changing cpu/gpu settings could eradicate this only ExTweaks has no instructions whatsoever and I don't want to make any n00b mistakes.
Can someone tell me how to optimize my phone for high-end gaming please?

This high end gaming should be, if your device is supported, possible without any lags and without OC. You have a rom with Siyah at this moment?

Yes, I'm on DiLiDroiD UHLPS, 3.0.15-Siyah-s2-v4.1.5+
thanks for your reply
I'm sorry, wouldn't know any other suggestions than to try this game with another (newer) rom and a upgraded Siyah version, and see if the problem still exists. OC shouldn't be necessary in my opinion.
Why don't you make a Nandroid back up and flash another rom to try?

I'm limited to what Roms I can use because I use Jkay Deluxe Settings, this app is a must for me.... while your here, could you advise me how to overclock safely(ish)
It all looks foreign to me, GPU FREQ STEP1- 100Mhz.......??? ExTweaks really should have a guide of some sort, ANY SORT!
Thanks again for reply

Good luck anyway.

I had the same problem you have with the browser app, it was really lagging when I clicked on a link, always took at least a few seconds to load the page. So I went onto ExTweaks and OC'd my CPU to 1600mhz and my GPU to all the highest settings, it didn't make any difference to my browser but now if I'm ever stranded in the Arctic I can use my phone to melt ice into water, for about 15 minutes before the batter dies that is.
Gta gangstar rio city is a poorly optimized game..so it will lag no matter what
So dont bother about this game..
I have also been struggling with finding rom/kernel combo for best gaming performance..and none of the users actually help here as they just want to underclock their s2 and have long batterry life and flaunt their s2..thats it!!!
for getting better fps..i would suggest using ondemand governer..and use 500-1400 mhz scaling on CPU and set your gpu to like 200-267-400 and set low thresholds..But beware this is for serious gaming only lol and will drain your battery pretty good..but u will get a fps boost of about 6-7. A slightly pretty lower setting is : cpu scaling same and set gpu to 200-267..with ondemand governer..this is also gives you a good gaming performance
also..download nenamark 2 and let me know what fps u get with siyah 4 kernel and note the settings in extweak used..im also thinking of switching from siyah 3.5 to 4 but got no time to test lol

I play so many HD games including Ganstar, NFS MW, Modern Combat 3 without no lag what so ever. And I do not use OC because it causes the phone to overheat. I think somethings wrong with your current ROM. Do a backup and try another ROM just to check

From my experience in general, only a few apps tend to overheat my sg2 (overclocked to only 1.4 Ghz though).

You know that It isn't the correct section, don't you?
so why ask for it here??
Galaxy Ace has an ARMV6 processor, it is too old for current heavy games, roms are modifyed to get the best balance between this 2 topic, you can barebone it, doing OC your performance might be reduced...
