Cant un-bork camera - HTC Amaze 4G

When I got my amaze 6 months ago the camera was fantastic. I was on ICS from first boot and had no problems until an OTA a few months ago. I went to a friends wedding and when I tried to take a pic with flash the cam app died and I had to restart my phone to get it to open back up. Ever since then the cam app has been borked. I tried a factory reset as a last resort before rooting but it didnt help.
So I have read enough to know that the flash killing the cam app is well documented and some sources on teh interwebz blame OTAs.
I rooted and have tried 3 different roms and many different camera apps and fixes. Cam still blackscreens every 3 pics or so. Using flash is still a no go and every time it dies I have to kill the app and clear data or it wont fix even with a restart.
Am I doing it wrong? Any suggestions?
Im currently on speedrom as a daily driver.
I do have a nand of stock I archived. Been thinking about restoring and re-locking to warranty it but I was hoping to at least take a shot at fixing it.

try doing a clean install?? like run a RUU and check out the cam?? it mite work :fingers-crossed:

Sounds legit. If im contemplating going back to stock I might as well do it with an RUU. Im hoping its a software thing. My phone has been completely pampered and never dropped.

yup a clean install always does the trick! before restoring try the camera with stock ruu if it's okay be caution when restoring the nandroid backups and some files in internal sd like android, lost dr, bin those folders contain early rom's data :highfive:

Which SpeedRom are you on?
I'm on SpeedROM 9.0 beta 1 but took the camera from SR 8, which is the stock HTC camera and it works very well.

It's not unusual for the kernel to have gone corrupt in some way to prevent a device from working. As a somewhat related cousin to this issue I had been monkeying with kernel flashing while S-ON but every time I tried to do so, it'd fail but it'd also wreck my Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi wouldn't work again until I RUU'd the stock stuff back in place.
Now I'm S-OFF but a lot more careful about what I flash and why.

[Q] Kinda confused.......What's next???

Ok, so 4th time's a charm I guess. I am on my 4th Atrix. First one was within a couple of weeks of launch. It had the issue where people's voices sounded distorted. Second one was perfect, but it suffered the brick of death during the unofficial gingerbread update. It was my fault. I flashed te rom without unlocking the bootloader and during the pudding process, it soft bricked and I tried to flash back to an older rom using RSD Lite. Third one must have been a refurb. It had issues sometimes recognizing the fingerprint swipe, it froze a few times and had the buzzing noise again. Now this one so far is great. I would suggest if you are going into an AT&T store to make sure you make a call on it before leaving the store. Will save you some time.
Ok so on the new one, I first unlocked the bootloader successfully. Second thing I did was flash the 2.3.4 rom in the pudding thread. Both installed without issues I assume. I used RSD Lite to flash the rom as the instructions. It got to 100%, my phone rebooted and I signed into motoblur and all of that, but in RSD it never said that it was successful or if it failed. My phone is working though.
What I am confused of is what I actually flashed. I believe the thread said that it's rooted, I was able to install titanium backup and Superuser through the market (which now actually looks different/better) but I'm unclear as to what else I need to do. Do I need to flash a rom like Kenneth's Alien ROM or something similar? The main thing I need is the option to tether and the webtop hack was pretty cool.

This happens quite frequently. RSD reboots the phone, but the phone doesn't re-enumerate for some reason and therefore RSD doesn't "believe" it has finished. As you've noticed, your phone is working fine.

I believe the ROM you flashed has both the tether and webtop hacks.
If you are satisfied with your phone, then you probably don't need to do anything else. However, is seems like new ROMs are coming out daily and most have these hacks too.
Thanks. IT does seem fine. I was done messing with it around 2AM last night. The battery seems a lot better as well. I'll try and test the tethering shortly.
Side note: I was in Gurnee a couple of weeks ago. I have a friend that lives in Waukegan so I'm up that way a lot. Did your lights go out last night?

Fortunately, this time our lights only flickered . Last time they were out for 5 days.

I need serious help

I am done with ROMs. There, I said it. The fact is, that they are usually more buggy than the stock ROM, and they really tend to jack things up when you want to revert.
The last one changed the MainVer and I cannot seem to get the phone back to stock. I followed the instructions for fixing Mainver, doesn't work.
Tried to RUU and also use the PH98IMG.Zip from HBoot, but those don't work because the last ROM changed the Mainver so neither of those methods work any more.
I thought I had it fixed by using Scott's CleanFlash tool to push the stock kernel to the phone and it did work for awhile, but now my phone is stuck in a bootloop and I really need to get this fixed, I need to get it to do a real RUU and completely restore the phone to stock. I can then just root it and debloat it and stop messing with ROMs which frankly are never enough benefit to justify the harm and aggravation they cause.
So can someone please point me in the right direction to find a way to correct Mainver so that I can just restore the phone with the latest OTA version of RUU and then leave my phone alone and stop messing it up? LOL

I think I may have solved it. I think I finally got the Mainver fixed and RUU appears to be working, finally.
But I am still done with ROM's until an ICS OTA is pushed out. LOL
If anyone sees me installing a ROM before then, feel free to kick me in the neck...

It's not all that bad bro.... ROM'ing = patience + experimentation + phone insurance.
That sucks you have been having so much trouble man. The whole change to a device with a only an unlocked bootloader along with the newer android version is really throwing Devs and Users for a loop. There is a lot to learn.
I hope all these events don't make you stray from flashing forever!
Sorry you've had such bad luck. My experience with custom roms has been the opposite. I've taken mediocre phones with buggy/laggy stock roms and turned them into solid, stable devices. Some of the features and extras baked into custom roms are so nice. I'm running Scott's Clean GB 1.6 and it has been 100% stable. I haven't had any fc's or reboots, and everything works. And no bloat!

Yeah, it really is weird. In a lot of ways, I prefer the DroidX and Motorola experiences I had. They may have an encrypted bootloader, but you could still install ROMs and it sorta helped keep you from messing up the phone, and SDLite always worked for me.
Part of me wonders what the ROM craze is all about. I mean, I fall into it myself, but then I ask myself, why do I do this? I have yet to see a ROM that runs as well as the stock one, once you root and debloat it. Sure, some of them look nice, but when you see what bugs there are, how many things don't work, and then the issues that can come up when you have to revert... I dunno... I start out all jazzed up and then more frustrated than ever when they just never seem to work properly...

I think some of the issue seems to be how much you need all the parts to work flawlessly for work. As far as my usage and what apps I use, I really can't complain about any of the builds. I just text, surf, browse the internet and play games and music. I never use exchange, blue tooth and those seem to be the biggest flaws with the leaks. So for me the experience is totally different. I think it really all depends on the users needs obviously. To bad you can't get work to spring for one phone for you and then you can have your personal phone to play with
But even the stock ROMs piss me off. I just did an RUU, unlocked it, rooted it, tested to make sure SU is installed and updated, and neither TI pro or ROM Toolbox can freeze my bloat apps. And Scott's CleanTool was never updated to work with the latest OTA, so I am left wondering how the hell I am supposed to disable all this crap.
There are definitely days when the iPhone and "just working" look very appealing... sigh...
I also think that part of the problem is that a lot of the apps and things are disjointed and don't work properly. There is no real checks and balances in the Androiud world, no review process. Any college kid taking a programming course is a "software engineer" and the results are that half the apps and stuff out there are hit or miss at best. It takes forever to weed through all the crap to find the one or two apps that actually work right...
This inability to debloat is driving me nuts.
This is what I am talking about, the plethora of **** apps out there that just don't work. ROM Toolbox, granted root access, go in and grab an app like Blockbuster and tell it to Freeze it.
says it is doing it.
Still says that 10 minutes later. Have to manually FC the app and then go back in and try another app. TIB does the same thing.
How the hell can you freeze apps or just delete them if neither ROM Toolbox nor TIB can do it?

Yeah, well if something can go wrong for me, it will.
I did a straight RUU, fully restored to stock. Unlocked. Rooted. Installed SU and updated it, and I cannot debloat any of the **** apps.
This used to work. It worked on my GF's Rezound last week, same OS, same OTA, same exact process, but when I do it, it just sits there doing nothing.

That sucks. I've had TiBu hang on backups and restores, but never on freezes. That's really strange. I would look for another app. You could try something like this. Just buy it and try for a second and then refund if it doesn't work right away. Just a thought. Hope it gets better for you.

Just buy rootexplorer and mount to r/o in system and go to app and either rename all the bloatware to .bak or just delete the apk's you don't want like blockbuster etc.. thats what I did and I am not sure why people freeze over renaming or deleting personally.
by renaming to .bak then if you like you can just delete the .bak and viola app is restored !

I was trying to picture the screen and was seeing the r/o at the top.. lol have to press that to change to read/ write to alter the actually files.
Tried that and even after renaming and rebooting, most of the apps are still in the app drawer...
The bottom line is that the last ROM I tried really screwed up my phone. I may have to smash it and get a new one under my insurance plan...

Now, that is wierd did you try deleting them or just moving the apk's onto your SD card from the folder if you wanted to keep them ? There is no reason this shouldn't work that I can think of .

Final chapter w the Amaze? Reboots getting more and more frequent - help!

My amaze used to be pretty solid, but I'm running into an issue where it reboots on a pretty regular basis, frequently when being turned on or launching something.
This used to happen when the battery got lower (like < 20%), so I bought some "Andida" batteries online which at first seemed great but quickly exposed the same problems.
Then I bought a pair of Anker batteries online, and at first things seemed ok but the problem has quickly reappeared and things are getting worse rapidly.
At this point, the Anker batteries are only maybe two weeks old, and no matter which of 5 batteries I put in (all fully charged, either in phone or in the Anker charger), reboots start appearing by 60%-70% battery life remaining, and its' getting so frequent that I can't rely on the phone for anything at this point.
Note - when plugged in, I don't have the problem.
It would be nice to have at least enough life left in this phone to get to the DROID DNA's release date in Canada, (or even a One X+) either of which look to be at least 30-60 days out.
Right now I am planning on doing a full NANDROID backup and fresh install of the ROM I'm running (ARHD 3.01). Past this, I could attempt to flash the latest Telus RUU but I doubt that's the issue, and I'm not sure if I would lose root or S-OFF if I go down that road.
Any thoughts on what the issue could be or if it's a detectable / repairable issue?
Thanks for any help!!
Massiv.
My phone used to do that. Just reflash an RUU. Your partitions are probably corrupted. If you want to root again, make sure you install a fresh ROM, not restore a nandroid.
I had the same exact issue no matter what Rom or ruu was flashed it still did it so I called T-Mobile and they replaced the phone under warranty and sent a new battery free of charge

Thanks guys. No warranty coverage anymore, so will try a from-scratch "superwipe" and fresh ARHD install, and barring that, will try reflashing the Telus RUU.

Compared to newer high end phones, yeah HTC kinda sucks now. Nearly every other dual or quad core phone i've seen is really quick on ICS but not the Amaze.
Wrong section there mate. This belongs in Q&A section.

Never rooted my new amaze and shuts down alot
Does this only get rid of root or does it get rid of s-off and sim unlock also?
Kusso - Flashing back to stock only removes root. It doesn't affect sim unlock or s-off.
That said - I am HAPPY to report that reverting to the Telus stock ROM (and getting off of ARHD and probably my slew of zillions of apps) has stopped the phone from rebooting, and battery life is also greatly increased!
The phone works like it should now, and is back to being a keeper.
Thanks for your help guys.
For thread searchers later, my process was:
-Backed up everything with titanium
-Backed up internal and external SD cards
-Formatted both SD's
-Manually copied back only core files (media and such) to the SD's
-Flashed the original Telus RUU from this site
-Flashed the OTA update
-Re-rooted and flashed back 4-Ext [Thanks Hasoon!]
-Mostly restored only core apps via Titanium, and mostly without the data unless I was sure the app was harmless
Back to a great experience.

My severe problem with Amaze 4G, all the roms I install act faulty.

Hi,
I'm having severe problems with my Amaze for weeks now. Thing is, I can't find a ROM that just works for me, nothing fancy or special, I just want to flash something and use my phone rather than flashing ROM every few hours.
First let me tell you about my phone:
It's T-Mobile Amaze 4G, S-ON and with 4EXT recovery.
My problems are that:
1) After each phone restart, most of the times phone doesn't find my SD card and as I store my apps on it, I have to restart again and again and hope for a time that it does find my SD card.
2) Whenever I tweak a ROM, even a bit, and I don't mean hack, just using the option the ROM itself provides like tweaks that Revolution does, phone crashes constantly and I have to reflash.
3) I have severe problems with ICS ROMs that seem stable and people are saying that they use regularly.
4) Even if I don't try to customize a ROM, phone gets into weird problems like crashes at startup or stuck at htc logo that leaves me into reflash.
I got this phone from my brother who was using 2.x ROMs on it but I wanted Nexus look so I upgraded to ICS with ph185.img and then been trying almost all ROMs but I'm yet to find something that I can safely put my sim card in it without worrying that it might miss a call or drain battery fast.
I first wanted Nexus pure android look but I now fell back to htc stock look and been trying all other ROMs, even though downloading ROMs is very expensive. Maybe I have to S-OFF and fall back to 2.3.4 ROMs.
Any help is highly appreciated as I'm so desperate and can't afford another phone for at least a year.
Thanks.

New HTC owner with horrible app data speeds

Hey all,
I recently got an HTC One and have noticed some really frustrating data slowness in most apps I use. I'm on ATT 4G LTE most of the time and will notice that many apps take forever to load what should be basic things. I seem to be okay when using Chrome to browse websites most of the time but even that can sometimes be quite slow. Other slowdown I've noticed is in things like opening YouTube and just doing a search or having the front page load, opening my Reddit app and having threads load, trying to change stations in Slacker Radio, etc. All of these things give me the spinning wait cursor and it's getting really frustrating, I never had these issues with my last phone(Galaxy S3).
So far I have unlocked the bootloader and rooted the phone but that is all, no custom ROMs or radios or anything yet. The phone did update to 4.3 and I noticed that once I got a notification saying the Superuser binary must be updated but it disappeared. I'm seriously thinking of finding out how to undo the root and bootloader unlock and exchanging the phone but I really really don't want to go through all of that.
Has anyone had any similar issues or have any suggestions?

your phone is broken compared to mine, Apps, Games the internet load so fast I forget I touch the icon, it's like it reads my mind if that makes sense. you have a few choices since your unlocked and rooted, do a backup in recovery and try installing a custom rom like InsertCoin or ARHD or MaximusHD. Their all Very Good. Your other choice is to return to Stock with whats called a RUU, it's a total wipe factory reset deal. You could just uninstall everything and see if one of your installed apps is not working correctly after the update to 4.3. You can do this in settings/backup & reset.
Its a fantastic phone it should be running at least 40% faster than you S3 did
Good luck

your phone is broken compared to mine, Apps, Games the internet load so fast I forget I touch the icon, it's like it reads my mind if that makes sense. you have a few choices since your unlocked and rooted, do a backup in recovery and try installing a custom rom like InsertCoin or ARHD or MaximusHD. Thanks for the info, I think I will try a custom ROM, I was thinking of going just abit more conservative with this phone but meh, all the hard work with unlocking the bootloader and rooting it is over right, so all I have to do is pick a ROM and flash it in recovery?(sorry, it's been alittle whle). I keep hearing about S-OFF, do I need to worry about that?
It is definitely enticing turning the phone into a Google Edition, but I suppose many ofthe custom ROMs are big steps up.
Thanks again for the info!
S-off is great but not necessary. Just follow the instructions for Rom flashing you'll be fine
