I was wondering what is the best DPI for my Galaxy Note 2, I tried other people's suggestions but it didn't work for me so I was wondering how Google decided on their DPI. Considering they're in charge of Android they must know the optimal level so I used the Nexus 7 and the Nexus 4 as reference:

So if Google designed a 5.5 inch screen device with 720x1280 resolution, it would most likely be at 270 DPI
I know this won't help a lot of you how it helped me but just thought I'd share it just on the hunch that it might at least help the 1% :silly:
I've tested most of resolution and the best for me is 280 dpi

Does 280dpi need special adjustments (like stock [email protected]) ? Will it work properly if I just change the build.prop?
I know that with 240dpi you gain more work space and everything is more sharp. What are the benefits from changing to 280dpi?
Thanks

340 is not stock dpi. 320 is.
320 looks good.
240 looks good as well. Since I've had the device I've toggled around and used both. If using 240 I run certain tw apps in 320 dpi to avoid fc. And have them look right. By using X posed

280 is the best setting I have tried. It not only looks good but that's the margin between tablet mode and phone mode. Since some apps look bad in tablet mode, this is the best setting to get a nice look at phone mode. Anyways Xposed app settings does the trick too

Although 100/105 makes it look more broad than it is - and swype doesnt fc - this is swyped
Using swype 2.8(the one whichcomes preinstalled on all roms)
100dpi looks awesome on our screen..
Swype fcs bcuz it is device resolution specific..
You must have also noticed that the lockscreen doesn't cover the entire screen
But yeah the screen looks similar to that of a hdpi fone

I have read that to make app support all density values (and don't have any scaling problems, even when compatibility mode is on!), we have to select SDK Version 4 as minimal target and add the following to your AndroidManifest.xml file:
Code:
<supports-screens
android:largeScreens="true"
android:normalScreens="true"
android:smallScreens="true"
android:anyDensity="true" />

In Cyanogenmod 7 there are no known problems when changing DPI from 160 to 140 .
When I am at 140DPI , the Xperia Active Launcher was not at the correct resolution , but LauncherPro and ADW.Launcher adapted to the larger resolution .
I have also seen boosts in 2D gaming such as Cut The Rope , Doodle Jump and Ninjump
REMEMBER I ONLY SAID THIS IS FOR CM7

how did you go about changing the DPI? changed the build.prop values or did you use a market app?
I run LCD Resolution which allows you to set density at boot as I found 140 to not break anything. Very nice being able to run 140 and 6 columns on the homescreens.
Sounds like a computer giving better performance using 800x600, cool ****!
You know what?? I think this is the real resolution of ace. Everything seems better. Even battery.

No its lowering the visible pixel density which in turn gives you smaller objects and more physical space.

i was trying to set it to 180 but at 180 the phone app force closes infact when i click on phone it just stays blank for few seconds and then force closes. so i had to go to 220. any thoughts on any solution to that?... also at 220 the dialer buttons stay still the big size so they are not fully visible, any remedy?
I thought just the opposite. Lowering density is less pixels per inch which means larger icons etc. also means your lowering your resolution. Is it just me that feels lowering your resolution is counter productive.
Lower pixel density = less resolution = larger icons etc. doesn't make sense to me why we would want to do this. There us a magnifier feature built in.

Yea. Really. I have no interest in changing all of my dpi settings. I would like to change it independently similar to changing dpi for select apps (file managers, Gmail, gvoice, etc). I'm talking about the screens the user navigates through after clicking menu and then settings.
And to further clarify my poorly worded question, I know how to change it but was wondering which "application" to change the dpi on to make desired changes.
Make sense?

You have to go into the xposed framework installer and install it first, then go to modules and enable App Settings. From there you can manually change the DPI on a per-app basis. I have the build.prop modified for a 240DPI and then just change some apps back to 320, such as phone, camera, etc.

Obviously I have done this already boss. Lol xposed is easy to use. Changing dpi for JUST settings will not stick. If you change your entire build prop, then obviously it will work. He was asking about ONLY changing settings. He probably wants the tablet style settings and everything else a more normal dpi. Touch wiz settings won't go into tablet mode like that though.

The guy above me doesn't realize this phone can't be rooted, therefore no xposed. I responded to your thread on the Z force forum though.
This phone cannot be rooted TODAY, but SOON ...

Try 560. Many apps are tested at 560 because that's what the Nexus 6P runs.

Hey guys I changed the DPI of my Moto Z from 640 which is so annoying to 580 on the phone. When I did this on my Galaxy S7 Edge everything looked great but now the play store looks a little weird (coloums where you see your downloaded apps and some weird triangular looking icon appears), also in Chrome in Bookmarks the icons next to the website are all big and fuzzy looking. Is there anyway to do anything about this or am I SOL? Please advise, anyone with knowledge of this... Thank you so much in advance!

Try 560 DPI and see if the playstore glitches go away.

Can you please check the playstore to see if there are any glitches? Try to search for and download apps to see if there are any errors. Thank you.

Excellent, I will be switching over to 560 when I get back in town.
560 works fine for me too. 520 messed up the camera.
Switched to 560 and see no glitches with playstore or anything else other than the bookmarks widget for chrome. The icons are extra large, but not even annoying. Small price to pay for a MUCH better DPI. Looks way better.

Did you use some app for DPI changes or used adb trick? Sorry, I am coming from Samsung and Samsung was easy to change to condensed mode using an app or Nova settings.
TIA.

I updated the DPI and all works fine except for image crop in WhatsApp and play store editor icons. Are you seeing the same result?
I tried clearing cache and restarting twice.
TIA.
