So I rooted and installed CWM, and now when I try to charge my phone WHILE it is off, the charging light wont come on, which means is not charging while off at all. Has this happened to anyone else? When the phone is on, it charges just fine.
EDIT: Just tried it with FastBoot on, and now it charges when powered off. So to anyone having the issue, try this.
EDIT 2: It appears this only happens when on CWM recovery. TWRP does not exhibit this problem.
I've noticed the same on my end.
Try a different recovery.
Locked & Loaded

Same result here, i woke up to a dead phone this morning.
Happen to me too with different recovery.

Out of curiosity, were your phones _off_, or in the hibernation state that is used for Fast Boot?

Mine was in the "hibernation" state, but before I had root, I could charge the phone while off with either FastBoot off or on. Anyway, I already changed recoveries to TeamWin's, and Im in the process of a Nandroid backup, so as soon as its done, I will try to charge with both FB on and off to see what happens, and I will post results. BTW, I've seen that this has happened to quite a few more people, so it might be a widespread problem that not a lot of people know because most of us dont ever turn off the phone to charge it.
I dunno.. havent tried that but why do u turn your phone off to charge it anyways lol

Well, if you run your battery until the phone turns off, it'd be great to be able to charge it in your own phone instead of an external charger or non-rooted/s-on phone.

For one, the phone charges faster this way because its not using any power at all.
I have fastboot turned off in the menu and mine charges fine when I turn it off. I'm using Teamwin Recovery

I can also confirm this, so it appears to be a bug related to CWM recovery, can any of the guys that still have that recovery and is experiencing this problem try to charge with FB off while the phone is off and confirm if it works or not?

Same here. I did notice however, the light would not turn green while off... It was on the charger for 7+ hours. Weird. I'm using TWPR.
It's definitely the cwm-4.0.1.4-shooter.img recovery. I just tested with both twrp and cwm. twrp allows the phone to charge with fastboot off and phone off.
Fastboot on isn't really a 'fix' because the phone never goes off completely from what I understand. I just want to know I can charge a dead battery in my phone if I ever needed to.

This.
This might be a serious problem to anyone whos using this recovery and their phone dies before they can get to an A/C outlet (for example, on a car w/o a car charger, etc). I will send the developers a quick note for them to check this out.
Good work on figuring this out... Im sure we will see more folks wondering wtf is goin on with their batteries

I can confirm this. Using CWM the phone does not charge when powered off. Whats the best way to remove CWM and install TWR?
when you turn off the phone and plug in the charger, the red light does go off in a few seconds, but my phone was fully charged overnight (without the red light on)
Mine charged to 100% this morning. I stuck with CWM, I also flashed OMJ deodexed rom before I went to bed. I plugged it in when the phone was on and awake.

I also wondered if it was just that the led wasn't on, but was really charging. I tried having the phone off with cwm, plugged in charger, led came on/went off, and left it for 30 minutes. It did not charge my battery at all.

Yeah, the problem does not happen if the phone is on and charging.
was running quicksense from about january dont know exactly which version.
phone completely died on me,
connected it to the charger and it turned on to the green "htc" logo,
but then it turns off..
so i tried booting to recover; holding volume down + power, with no luck.
tried it via connected to computer, no luck.
with & without batter still nothing..
weird thing is, SOMETIMES the charging light will keep blinking.
also SOMETIMES, the screen stays off, and the vibration feedback when pressing the home, menu, back, and search keys, virbates..
do i have the first bricked amaze or what?
--the search key "restarts the phone"
i can tell because the keys no longer make the phone vibrate when pressed after pressing the search key.
I'm betting my money on you having a earlier recovery installed that doesn't allow proper boot if the battery is dead... crappy part about that? it doesn't let the battery charge either... Find someone with an Amaze, or Sensation, charge your battery in their phone for 30 minutes, then try your phone again. Also, after your phone is charged, you probably want to reflash your recovery to a new one that doesn't exhibit this problem.
*just a wild guess, but it makes sense, it's happened to me*
*note, you could just have unrelated catastrophic hardware failure, lol*

S-Off isn't possible right now, S-On-Unlocked is safe. although having the recovery that doesn't support charging is like a temp-brick. You just need to charge your battery in another phone.
Or splice the battery directly to the wires for half an hour. That's how I charged when my charging port was the broked
Sent from my HTC_Amaze_4G using xda premium
Can you at least get into adb? You could try accessing it and then using adb to reboot into bootloader/recovery via "abd reboot recovery" or "adb reboot bootloader"
Did this get resolved? Just wanted to know if my hunch was right.
It sounds like a dead battery. The blinking light means (from my experience) that its charging but not enough juice to use yet. Once my phone died and it blinked for a couple of minutes. I tried turning on, but battery wasn't juiced enough. After a few minutes, the light turned solid and was charging and had enough power to turn on.
I would try a new battery. Good news is you're not bricked, and most likely, not even soft bricked

I've had a very similar issue to those mentioned here. I have the latest cwm recovery installed (five point something). After wiping battery stats my amaze went into a cycle of booting up normally then automatically restarting after about 30 seconds. Now it shows the amber light while charging, but will not boot at all, not even into recovery. adb says device not recognized, and the amber light flashes periodically and shuts off if i press the power button... should I trash this phone and get a galaxy s II ?

Does the phone charge when you plug it in?
hi, today my photon freezes when I'm calling my friend
i tried to press the power button to turn if off but it won't shut down
i press any other button and still there's no response from the phone.
so in desperation i pulled out the battery
and the phone is dead.
i tried to install the battery again but the phone won't turn on at all
i tried to "rest" for a day but still the phone won't turn on
i've tried connecting it to wall charger but still , dead.
the battery is full cause i've tried it on my friend's photon.
so the battery is not the issue.
can anybody give me any solution ?
i can't send the phone back to sprint cause i lived overseas.
i really need help here
any suggestions are welcomed, thx.
When you plug it in to AC does it show any sign of life?

A few more details would help us help you.
It's (should be) common knowledge that you can help fix something when you don't know what's under the hood.
Give us some info. Are you stock, rooted custom rom kernel etc.
Does anything occur on your phone at any time? Lights or a vibrate when charging? Do you get to the Motorola screen? If so Are you familiar with rsd and fast boot?
To get help around here we need to see a thorough post that explains all of the details. I assure you someone will attempt to come to your aid

Okay here's the thing:
the photon is unlocked and using 197 SBF
rooted and unlocked (cause i install the beat audio mod)
prior to this , nothing is wrong
the phone works normally
and suddenly it hangs / freezes when i called my friend with it
so out in desperation i took off the battery
and it never turn on since
totally dead
not even motorola logo on the screen
the battery is 90% cause i tried my battery on my friend's photon and it shows 90% charge
so i don't think this is the battery problem
i tried connect it to the wall charger, nothing happened not even LED turn on
i tried connecting to my laptop usb port and the white led come out but still it won't turn on
with and without battery, when i connect it to my laptop the white led comes out.
Try to pull the battery more times, I know that this issue could be from pudding sbf on some Photons.
One man from here had the similar problem, flashed derpunlock.sbf, booted and after some minutes it died, he had to pull the battery, wait a few minutes and again. After full sbf flashing, it was fine.

AH! I'm having the same issue! No answers?
NOOOOOO!
Ok so for some reason now my SGP 5.0 USA will not turn on right. Whenever I press the power button it shows the loading circle then the battery icon. Now I know what your thinking its dead. But it is not! The battery is always charged. Right now it is at 85 percent and doing this. Only way to get it on is to plug it into the outlet and hold on until finally(after many of the battery reboots as mentioned above) it boots up.
Also it will not stay on. As soon as I unplug the charger the device turns right off. It only seems to start up properly when it is above 95 percent battery. If it is anything under I am forced to have it in the charger. I am on PAC-Rom with Sultan Kernel R5b2. I do not have fast charge enabled.
This is really weird, anyone know whats going on? Is the battery just shot?
Yeah, it happens to me on CM 10.1. I don't think there's anything you can do about it, and if you're worried about it not turning on, why not just charge it whilst it's on? It also seems that both ROMs don't have a charging animation. I'm not even sure if I understood your question, lol.

It does not matter if its on. I plug the charger in and taking it out will turn the device off. If I try to turn it on it wont turn on it just shows the battery icon then turns off no samsung logo nothing. Im just trying to wonder why its happening. It has never been a problem before been using cm 10.1 since they first released it for the SGP 5.0 and this has not started happening until a week or so ago.

I have just tried this with no luck. This really sucks Its hard to install nightlies and turn it off during the night like I like when I can't even turn it back on or have it reboot into recovery. Think I should try flashing stock then cm9 then cm 10.1 in order see if that helps cause like I said been on cm 10 since it first came out never had a problem until a week ago.

I have searched all over and tried all of the power + vol, +/- , usb, pc chargers etc...I get the solid white light when plugged in. The PC recognizes the phone I assume because the computer makes connection noises and moto drivers popup to install. It is stock, unrooted running JB and has been rebooting and not turning back on right away for a few weeks now until last night where it was on the charger all night and now is 100% dead. Any options? I cant seem to find a final working answer? Will it come down to needing to get a factory usb cable to enter fastboot, even which, what to do from that point?

OK here is how to make your stock cable into a factory cable http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2075647
Now that will let you flash it without it being charged. I would recommended flashing a stock sbf for your phone model and provider also make sure you use the jb one ics won't work. Also I recommend using rsd for the flashing process
OK thanks I'll soldier one up tonight and try it out. Can someone send me a link to the sbf files? Which version of rsd is recommended?

after many tries of plugging in usb, it finally went into fastboot where RSD was able to recognized it. I SBF'd, it completed then said it needed to reboot. It wouldn't reboot on its on probably because I had the program factory usb cable attached. Still got nothing after that, power button, hold vol down, hold both, wall charger, pc charger etc...I still get a white blinking light then solid then off when in the wall charger. The computer just makes the connect and disconnect noise for like 4 minutes then it does nothing. I'm still having trouble trying to get it back into fastboot with factory cable, its totally random when it decides to accept it. I'm out of ideas?
Do you have a multimeter? And if so, have you ever removed the back of your phone?
If you're willing to, (at your own risk, as this will void a warranty), you can remove the back of the phone, and check the voltage/amps on your battery and charging contacts. Unscrew the contacts (using a very, very small torx driver), and check the voltage on the battery (3.8~ I believe), and voltage/amps on the phone contacts with the charger plugged in (and battery disconnected). If there is current, then the battery is being charged. Watch the behavior of the phone and LED as you're doing this, as it could tell you if and when you current is steady. I may be wrong, but a flashing LED means charging, and steady means charged/not charging (for various reasons). There may be a physical problem with the USB port on your phone, causing intermittent connection problems, leading to the flashing and power-up issues altogether.
In reference to the connect/ disconnect on the computer, in Control Panel>Device Manager>USB Controllers, I uninstalled (not disabled) both my Root Hubs and Host Controllers, and Windows being Windows, it automatically reinstalled the proper drivers. Voila, my phone was once again recognized. (Done with my SGS3, though device type is moot with this idea.)
Good luck!
I've spent too much wasted time messing with it. To the graveyard drawer with the droid 1, HTC rezound and now the RAZR it goes
