Anyone notice any app scaling issues due to the resolution of our screens? I have noticed this in a few apps. All of the Angry Birds apps are super small on the screen (both regular and HD versions). Odd thing is, Bad Piggies works and looks fine. See attached pics. Is there anyway to manually control this scaling?

will reducing resolution actually increase battery life or play games more smoothly or i am being wrong?
anyone? .........
thread up..........anyone?
As for battery no. The screen is still lighting up the same amount of pixels and same brightness etc... Gaming i doubt u will see a difference. Tell us if u find othwise tho. Hope that helped

Changing screen density isn't the same as changing resolution. Apps choose which icons to show depending on the "screen-density" value reported by the device. So higher density devices will have larger and more detailed icon graphics, etc.
As far as saving battery life, the screen typically uses most battery which varies slightly depending on the brightness setting. One root user found he could save battery by only showing red colours (requires changes to the display driver).
Shrinking the screen like in Note 3 will save energy...anybody found a way how to do this in other phones? application?

try look at [ro.sf.lcd_density] value at build prop ? im just playing with that
Just got an Xperia S and noticed that when setting a wallpaper (using the Gallery app), it makes you crop it but when set the quality is nowhere near the quality of the original and the contrast is poor. Setting a different wallpaper for the lock screen seems fine.
I've tried using Wallpaper set and save but this is worse as it seems to be designed for lower res screens.
Any ideas how to set a wallpaper without losing quality? (using the stock launcher). Also is it possible to set one as protrait so it doesn't scroll between screens?
Came from an HTC Desire and never had this issue.
TIA

Excellent, cheers!
I have a rooted S3 with the stock rom. I am looking for a way to decrease the minimum brightness. I have seen and tried the brightness fix from the Note but that didn't work. I've also tried filters in the app store and those suck. On my evo I had a tweak that decreased/increased the min max levels. Is there anything like this for the s3?
Sounds like you may have already tried it but I am using a great app called screen filter. Does the job perfectly.

JKay Framework has a statusbar toggle that can set the screen brightness to a very low level, perfect for night reading.
Try Vodoo Display Filter.
You can't find a better app than this one to do this job!
Let me know if it's ok .
Screen Filter from the Play Store. 'nuff said.
Just tried screen filter and it works neatly.
So I had the Screen Filter app and while it worked it make everything look really funky and filtered. I didn't like it. Voodoo Display Filter is a much better option I think. The filter is less harsh and works great!
Thanks everyone!
Questions go in the QA section
Try Lux from Google Play. It's paid however
"Lux" app from play store.
Best brightness app out there no question.

I have used Note 1 and Note 2 the last 2 years, and now finally got the Ultra Z. Even if the screen is big, I think the text size on several internet pages (use Chrome) and several Apps are tiny compared to the size of the text on the Galxy Notes. I have of course been in settings under screen and increased the text size to the largest level, and also tried to increse the text size in my Chrome Browser, but this does not help. For example my Swiftkey keyboard feels smaller on Ultra than Note 2, even if I have changed the setting also to max portrait and landscape height.
Any solution to this issues problem?
thx

Firstly, it's not a problem, it's the way the phones designed, it makes proper use of the 1080p screens real estate and sets the dpi to something realistic. Galaxy Note used the same screen dpi as all its lower res phones so was completely pointless.
If you want to change dpi, you'll have to root and then either install an app which does it, but the often cause bootloops or you can manually edit the build.prop file yourself.

Root + Xposed framework + per_app_dpi and no bootloop. Only thing that can happen it's the app won't open with a bad dpi setting.

Hi to all!
Well I've read some guides about how to decrease the resolution on my Z2 running latest Marshmallow Existenz ROM 5.6.5. Changed resolution to 720x1280 and system DPI to 253 (I have rather a good eyesight that is why do not mind small UI elements ).
Some apps were not satisfied with the DPI I told them to work in that is why I tailored some of them using Xposed module App Settings.
But there are some issues I could not repair :crying::
1. The bootanimation displays normally, but after some seconds only half of the screen is filled (so it says ''Xpe'' and then ''Existe''). Tried to install smaller (720x1280) bootanimation but the result is the same. I can live with that
2. The Recents' thumbnails are enormous. Even 1/5 of the app is displayed in the thumbnails. I thought initially that it is caused by SystemUI's messed settings with the DPI so I played with App Settings to repair it (both ''DPI'' and ''Screen (dp)''). Still with no luck.
Thought it might be connected somehow to Android WebView which is operating in country's local app with used stuff called Finn. There the thumbnail is also really huge, before the whole picture would fit in the thumbnails.
3. Is the suggestions/xperia menu search. The ''suggested'' apps are much bigger that the icons displayed in menu.
So it might be some scalling issue, but I have no idea which application would I need to adjust.

My phone is running Android 6.0.1, with root, with xposed modules related to UI: AppSettings, GravityBox, Xperia Home by Serajr
Any help in the matter will be appreciated! ::laugh:

No one ? - I don't believe no one really had that issue! At least say: 'Happens to me too'.
Keep it hd 1080x1920 and change DPI to 320

Thank you for your input! However it is not the solution I am looking for. I just wanted to have lower resolution for a better performance. I am I the only one who is meeting such issues?

I tried it and got the same like you.

I reduced my resolution to 540x960 and set the dpi to 240. Performance and battery life felt largely the same. Graphics were mostly unaffected except for weird glitches like the ones mentioned in the OP (walkman aka music would straight up stop working though). Text looked blurry, perhaps a subpixel rendering thing.
At the end I returned to 1080p. It was not worth tickling my OCD for little to no benefit.
Thank you for your replies! Wow Pixelado, your resolution was pretty low. Beacause no newer Xperia has that resolution, the Sony apps could cease to work. I wanted to keep something still lower yet 'compatible'.
Yes the performance is pretty much the same. Antutu did not gave a higher score, even gave a lower on CPU and higher on 3D a bit. What I noticed was after playing 3D game for around 20 mins the temperature was around 53C, before in 1080x1920 it was over 61C (in a thin rubber cover). What are your observations?
Best regards,
Vixificent
I came back to 1080p as suggested. Thanks! :good:
