Hello, I just got an EVO 3D today and was wondering if there was a possible way to root with HBOOT 1.50?? My Software Version is 2.08.651.2
I tried using this method, but it said HBOOT 1.50 is not supported.
Does anyone know how I can root?
Thanks

I actually want to root without voiding warranty. Does anyone know how much longer it will take to get root working on HBOOT 1.50 without having to void your warranty?
Thanks
It's not about whether or not you void your warranty. It's about whether HTC has the explicit knowledge that you've done so.

in other words... if you root, u will void your warranty no matter what.
Yes, I think thats a correct assumption.

How does Sprint insurance work with this?
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium
I think everyone is too caught up in the "will this void my warranty". The reality is: No matter the method you use, if it can be proven that YOU were at fault with borking your phone then they will probably tell you that you aren't covered and make you pay for the fix. This is the understanding that everyone who comes to XDA or any of the similar sites should have prior to doing anything to your phone.
Nobody has explicitly said that HTC will void a warranty on a phone unlocked with HTC's Unlock Tool. There is a pretty good chance that using the Revolutionary method will void it if they can prove it. You need to get really good at reversing your tracks and getting your phone back to square one. Follow all directions, make sure you know what you are flashing before you do.

Yeah, rooting your phone automatically voids your warranty. I just received my Evo last week and didn't get Sprint's insurance, but got radioshack's. Usually, the phone companies does not cover rooted phones.
I really doubt that Sprint's insurance cares one way or the other. A tech at a store may refuse to work on it if you don't have the stock rom on it and it's a software problem (which is valid as they can't fix problems some custom roms have). If you get water damage, screen cracks, or you lose it, who cares if it was rooted. You can always report it lost and they will never know one way or the other. They've had no problems working on unlocked windows mobile phones in the past or replacing them through asurion in my experience.

actually, htc does say you'll void your warranty if you use their unlock tool. there's a warning about it before you try their method.
btw, if you want to flash custom kernels for the custom roms, you need to boot into recovery (type "fasboot boot recovery.img" <recovery.img> is the name of whatever your recovery image is) through bootloader. i didn't know that and i was pulling my hair out flashing roms that wouldn't boot properly because i used rom manager and other methods to reboot into recovery.
this is for hboot 1.50
you need the kernels that go with the roms or your phone won't boot the roms properly.
You do know they too are aware of our secret public forum.

we all know if you use any rooting method your warranty is void and like someone said by easily reverting back to factory stock this can be concealed. I think the concern is if people with hboot 1.50 use the HTCDEV unlock method and root their phone, will that place a marker or be put in some kind of database for sprint techs to see thus ruining chances of the phone being taken care of by them? I know I read that locking the phone backup shows so no matter what the techs will know.
I just got my Evo 3d. I had a 4g and gave that to my wife when she lost her phone. I had the 4g rooted and was running Vaelpak and loved it. I would love to root the 3d if for nothing else but to tether. As I have been able to find, the only root method for the 3d with the 1.5 H-Boot, is using the HTC method which cannot be completely undone. that is it sets a flag so that if I were to have problems and send the phone in, they would know I rooted. I have not been able to find a root method that is completely reversible. Is that right? Is anyone working on a way to root that can be reversed completely?
Bob
it unlocks the bootloader and displays "unlocked"
on the bottom of the HTCDev method it tells you how to re-lock the bootloader.
just one command in fastboot...
However, they know you rooted the instant you sign up for htcdev... so, your mileage may vary..
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks
Moving to Q&A
is there a way to get the HTC tool without signing up? Or is someone working on a way that doesn't' require signing up with HTC? I don't want to loose the warranty if someone is working on a better way. But if the community is happy with the HTC way and not working on another, I may go ahead and do this. But the phone is less than a week old so I am not quite ready to loose the warranty.

also, importantly, the phrase "unlocked" will change to "relocked" on the device further providing a very easy indicator to any repair tech the device was unlocked at some point in time.

Haven't seen any public statements from AlphaRevX indicating they are working on or are planning on working on a method for hboot 1.5.
The previous methods they used were patched in software 2.08 and hboot 1.5 release.
I don't doubt their capable of achieving the same results with hboot 1.5 but I have a hard time seeing this as a high priority for them as the process is very complex and difficult. In addition, the manufacturer has released a method which is good, not great, but good and much better than the alternative previously available of nothing.
Hope that helps!
Thanks. I do want to root but not sure I want to loose warranty less than a month after buying. I do not overclock so I am not worried about that. I will probably root soon, but knowing that there is no way to go completely stock once I have done it, gives me pause.
Bob
Hey guys, just got my EVO today and I have a few questions.. to use this tool, must I use the root method in development which goes through HTCdev.com? If so, does this blacklist my phone at HTC automatically? If that is the case, whats the purpose of the tool? Also, if I do this and return my phone within 14 days will I be unable to return it because I went through the procedure?
I really want to try some custom ROMS, I love the phone stock but the inability for the browsers to keep pages loaded when you multitask is just killing me. This is my one and only complaint about this phone.
You don't have to run the htcdev unlock to run lazy panda. Without knowing exactly how this exploit works, its hard to say whether HTC knows you've unlocked your bootloader with this. I'd guess no, but again, I'm not sure exactly how this works. I'm sure some of the smarter people around here could write you a book though.
I've read a few stories of people swapping HTC unlocked Evos through Sprint stores though, so I don't know if I'd worry too much about the voided warranty. I know I haven't.

Make sure you read through the entire s-off thread. I am not going to risk soft bricking my phone until they release a fix for why some people are getting stuck at a black screen in download mode. I assume their original script will be updated to prevent that from occurring in the future.
Just make sure you read up on it and accept the risk it comes with. People install drivers by all sorts of different methods (HTC Sync, through device manager, through a stand alone installer...etc) and I am guessing the way some people installed drivers is why the issues are happening since a couple different drivers need to be installed depending on which mode your phone is in and I wouldn't be surprised if the correct drivers don;t get installed if you use certain methods but I'm probably wrong.
The only reason I want s-off is because we can get rid of that red text now on boot up but I don't want to deal with unbricking if I am one of the unlucky people.
Please help read!!
So my HTC amaze died on me about 2 days ago I was listening to my music in my car connected through Bluetooth then a cop passed by and everything shut off haha coincidence haha anyway went home had no service like absolutely nothing thought nothing of it and went to sleep, next morning still nothing and ever since now its dead. Called HTC they said most likely its T-Mobile not the phone but they sent me a replacement back cover (which is cool) because the antennas are on the back anyway I know this isn't the problem because even without the back cover you can still get signal. So I took phone to T-Mobile put new sim tested and nothing so now I know its the phone not T-Mobile. Anyway my question is how can I prepare to send back to T-Mobile I have relocked phone put stock recovery and put leaked ics Rom. So is that bad that it sais relocked and bad if I'm using leaked ics rom I know its voids warrenty when it sais relocked but my software and phone everything works perfect its just the signal so will they fix it? And when I send in could I send phone with a eBay bought battery not HTC one so they could send me a new battery or should I send only HTC battery, phone, and back cover. And also is there any fix for this so I don't have to send in? Please help thanks
You can install official ruu and that will update and install your hboot to locked, which is what tells them if it's locked or relocked. If you don't know how to do this you need to read. Also I've been hearing that ever since s off became available they are considering as voiding warranty not sure if this has taken effect yet or if it matters but just to be sure if your s off read the section that tells you how to s on.
Now before you send have you tried toggling airplane mode on and off ? Still no signal? Flash the official ruu usually fixes these issues. If still no signal then I suggest you send it in.

It's still gonna say relocked, the only way he can get it back to "locked", is if he s-off's the device, once s-off is successful, it automatically puts it as locked all over again, he can leave it as lock, restore a stock ruu, then using, use the command: fastboot writesecureflag 3, that will s-on the device along with everything else being complete stock.
Hmm ya I know how to ruu wich I did but I ruu the ics leak and now everything's stock accept that it sais relocked and want to know if that's gonna be a problem for warrenty when I send it in? It shouldnt since its not software problem? And ya hear how to s off just don't want to try wire trick and all that. And yep tryed turning off and on airplane mode turning off radio taking T-Mobile to change sim cards have original stock Rom tryed *#*#4636#*#* all those tricks but nothing.

When you chose to unlock boatloader you voided your warranty. So by saying relocked it tells them you unlocked it. You need to do what dark nightmare says or you run the risk of not warranting your phone. Luckily for me I "lost" my phone so I couldn't send it in.

aw glacierguy thanks for the positive attitude! hope everything goes good for my phone!
So update for everyone i called HTC back and told them to cancel my back cover replacement for the Amaze because i know this is not the reason why i have no bars! because without that cover i still had bars and i know the amaze has some more antennas inside the device. Anyway i told them that i want to send the phone in for repairs so now everything set up and just have to send the phone on its way :crying: hope its a hardware issue and they can fix it. In the mean time got kinda intresting email from HTC saying
"After we receive the device, we will diagnose it and if there are any damages that fall outside of the limited warranty, we will contact you with a quotation to repair. If you choose not to repair, a service fee of up to $35 dollars will be charged and the device will be returned unrepaired."
Yes kinda scared me but hope i don't have to pay anything for this repair so everyone wish me luck and ill let you guys know how everything goes.
Sucks im probably not gonna have my phone for about a month
Just asking, but even if you managed to get the phone completely back to stock and say "Locked" isn't HTC able to tell if you've unlocked the bootloader via their unlock process on the website?
I was under the impression that the entire reason for the HTC unlock process (getting the key from the phone, etc) was so that they would have a database of phones that have had their bootloader unlocked? I'm kind of new to this but that was my impression.

I think they do have a database, yes, but that only tells them that you requested the file, they can't know you YOU used the file, can they? Huh? Nope, if they knew you used the file, that sir would be invasion of privacy, then they'd be paying for more than just a simple device replacement with the lawsuits that would be hitting them from every mobile device owner using their product.
So once it says "Locked", they can't say you voided your warranty, then they'd have to prove it.
Yes what darknightmare said you could get token but maybe last second decided not to do it haha anywho sending it saying relocked hope they fix hardware issue if not maybe gotta spend money?

They don't need a database. There is no way I know of to get a "locked" phone once it has been unlocked. It will say "relocked". So HTC knows it has had an unlocked bootloader. That doesn't necessarily negate the warranty so far as HTC is concerned. I've read that they have fixed what are obviously hardware problems. But they won't fix anything that a ROM screwed up unless you pay.
The wildcard is T-Mobile. They may or may not be picky about these sort of things.
Ya for sure lets see what htc sais shipped out today through ups htc should get it thursday hope ups loses or breaks my packagae have 300 dollar insurance ha but yep anyone know of any prices for this fix?

Sir, when I say there is a way to get a "locked" bootloader, please don't argue with me unless you can prove my theories wrong, , I have tested and proven everything I speak of, I don't just say something because I want to.
Edit: For the record, once it says "relocked" you have voided your warranty, if you read the agreement on HTC website when unlocking your bootloader and the message on the device when unlocking, it clearly states by unlocking your bootloader you are voiding your warranty.

100% on what Dark Nightmare said, i followed the procedure on the forums on how to completely restore to stock. i was s-off etc.. after it was all said and done, my phone was locked and ready to rock. I sent it back after my replacement arrived and all was good.
Just read through General, Q&A and Dev section, Trust me the answer is there. It's ALWAYS there. I used the GB juopunutbear S-off tool instead of the ICS tool cause i am retarded and didn't take my time and got stuck because of it. I did 2-3 minutes of using the search button and i was fixed in a second!

I think my post may not have been clear. Of course you can lock the bootloader; that is how one installs the original ROM. Verizon put a patch in the hole we were crawling through to get unlocked and then s off. In the 2.04 update, They blocked the hole and kept it blocked in 2.06.
The exploit used was called Super CID unlock, and it allowed us to change the CID (Carrier ID) from Vzw_001 (think of this as carrier call letters) to a generic CID (22222222). So if the CID was changed BEFORE the 2.04 update the phone could be unlocked. If it wasn't changed prior to the update it wasn't changed at all of them killing the method.
Q.) Why 22222222 ?
A.) HTCdev.com bootloader unlock process would work on the DNA, but Verizon drew a line in the sand and told HTC, "nuh uh, now way girlfriend. Our CarrierID, or CID, will not be part of your shenanigans"
So HTC has their bootloader unlock process make sure your phone isn't a Vzw_001 CID, since its 22222222 it passes the check, the tool works, and you're unlocked and can proceed to root your phone.
But once it was stuck on Vzw_001 there was no way to use the htcdev.com unlock process on a locked and stock DNA.
Q.) What's JTAG?
A.) It bypasses everything being locked and unlocks it via hooking lots of tiny wires to the motherboard. It's opening the phone, connecting a special machine to the board inside that flashes firmware at the lowest level, and it isn't affected by a locked hboot because its access is direct to the board, like the process HTC might do when they take a blank S4 and make it a DNA board and firmware for all the components. If a phone is completely bricked no power from the battery, JTAG can still flash it back good as new because it powers the board itself through its connection.
Q.) Sounds labor intensive and expensive
A.) It is compared to free but for the work they do IF it's quality work, it's worth it because of how involved it is. This isn't like just pushing an ADB command.
Q.) So what does this all mean?
A.) Up until the last couple of days it meant if you wanted your phone rooted or unlocked you had to send it to be JTAG'd but it came back as good as new and ready to rock
Better Answer: S-off has been achieved on the new software updates. It will be available to the public very soon. So Just sit tight, but hopefully you learned something. I will clean this up later I was in a huge hurry. Sorry for typos and fragments.
