HTC One & Medianet - AT&T HTC One (M7)

So I got my One yesterday and got the new SIM card provisioned. I woke up this morning with a text message saying my device needs an LTE data plan and to call customer service. I don't need LTE and sure don't want to give up my unlimited data for $20 a month. After adding a MediaNet APN everything has been working fine. So are AT&T just being their normal typical self and trying to get me to upgrade when I don't need to?

What phone are you coming from? If it wasn't an lte phone the message is prolly just them saying you need to be on the lte unlimited plan. Same thing happened when I switched my wife from an iPhone to my old one x. You'll be able to keep your unlimited

Coming from an Inspire 4G. I wasn't aware they had an unlimited LTE plan?

Medianet only works on nonsmartphone/phone that att doesn't recognize. In this case, they probably know you are using smartphone and probably will change it to one of those regular data plan

Well... it's "Unlimited" meaning that you get 5 Gigs of full speed data and then when you reach that cap, you get throttled back.
There are ways to work around the throttling though.
You're not provisioned on AT&T's end to have LTE yet. I had the same problem going from my S2 to the S3 last year in June. It took like 5 minutes to fix. Just make absolutely certain that they put you on the Unlimited LTE plan. If I had not checked mine after they did it, I wouldn't have caught that they put me on 5 Gig plan instead of my unlimited plan.

Thanks for the info guys. I have been on this data plan going back to the original Samsung Blackjack. Have used it with the BJ, BJII as well as Inspire 4G. I know the plan works on my phone. If they give me any grief about changing data plans I will post my trip report here. Hopefully it was just a canned message they send out to scare people into giving up their unlimited data :good:

Never, ever give it up. AT&T has not changed their grandfather policy yet. If they try to kick you off, raise hell and threaten to take your business elsewhere. (as a threat.)

If you are already on unlimited they should be able to bump you up to the correct plan without loosing the unlimited. I think... dont quote me.

I said dont quote!

AT&T's system should actually automatically bump you to the appropriate plan after a few days. They certainly don't offer MediaNet anymore, and neither do they offer a compatible "unlimited data" plan to transition you over to. In order for you to keep any kind of unlimited plan at this point, you need to have had the $30 unlimited data plan that was offered after the MediaNet plan was no longer offered. Even the $30 "unlimited data" plan is not really unlimited as it is throttled after 5GB.
I'm surprised they didn't catch you when you got your Inspire 4G. But, that was also a 3G phone that had a plan compatible with those previous phones you listed.
LTE phones have special plans (not really special but has a different name), which is why you are getting that text message. Watch your account/bill. It'll switch you over automatically if you don't do it manually first.

You won't need a new SIM if you buy it off contract All they give you is the new phone

you can buy off contract (out right), but if your $20 data plan is not for a smart phone. The system will automaticlly put you on the 2g data plan and you will lose your unlimited. Now if your $20 unlimited data is for a smart phone i would make sure that when you purchase the phone, talk to the rep and make sure that they still have you on the unlimited plan...there are way around this...hope this helps...
Currently using it on a Fuse on 3G
So the big issue is $20 per month plus ~$600 for the phone = unlimited data (2 years = $1080)
or
$25 per month plus ~$150 for the phone = 2gig per month (2 years = $750)
Currently using less then 2gig per month but thats with the Fuse....struggling with what to do but I guess we need to see real prices first.
if your on a smartphone unlimited plan, you are locked in for unlimited data on any smart phone... you have tol let the rep know that you have unlimited data when you get the atrix...
I have the vibrant on a at&t unlimited plan that's non smartphone. Will I be detected & upgraded with the atrix 4g?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
If you are on a non-smartphone data plan and get an Atrix it is extremely likely that AT&T will detect you and require you to switch data plans.
Just curious, why haven't they detected my vibrant?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Because the Vibrant isn't one of the phones AT&T issues.

This isn't the case. At least, it wasn't when I quit Radioshack a year ago.
All people on AT&T that had the original $20 unlimited data are entitled to it, for as long as they want. You just have to tell them you had it. They can check your plan to see if you previously had it, and if you did, will be able to keep it.
Although, AT&T royally ****ed me when I quit Radioshack(They cancelled my Employee Plan, and I lost all my benefits, they then went ahead and told me they have no record of me ever being a *customer,* so I wasn't entitled to the older plans.)
Again, this was a year ago; They might have changed things since then. I would call and ask.
Realistically, though, 2gb on a phone isn't the easiest thing to cap out.. Especially when the phone has built in Wi-Fi.
I am very interested the atrix and would luv to rid myself of the vibrant. I am going strickly american.

Right, if you had an old data plan you can keep it. But AT&T categorizes some plans as "non-smartphone" plans, and if you get an AT&T smartphone they will notify you that they are switching you to a smartphone plan. I know multiple people that had this happen to them, starting around November.

Correct.
I still have my unlimited data plan from my first Tilt... used it for my Tilt 2.. and I plan on getting the Atrix 4G.
I assume I'm safe as long as I tell/remind/make sure with them, correct?
I'm on a non-smartphone unlimited data on my milestone due to AT&T not recognizing the phone.
My thought process is to get a Bell version Atrix if they are the same hardware as the AT&T and flash AT&T's firmware when it becomes available. That way AT&T can't recognize the IMEI and make me get the higher data plan. I'm currently on $10 unlimited data since i have the unlimited text.
Anything wrong with this thought process? Just curious. Thanks!

Nope, you're incorrect.
If Atrix has a new simcard format, and will force u to get a new simcard, then perhaps.
If standard old sim works with Atrix, you will NOT be upgraded/changed.
This topic was around for a long time, and I'm tired of seeing this. I've been using my simcard for about 5 years now, coming from HTC Kaiser to TouchPro to TouchPro2 to NexusOne to Captivate. Same 1 simcard. Same $20/unlim data.
In fact, I called AT&T (about a different issue) and decided to ask them outright about this policy. They specifically told me that they will not change your account to a more expensive data plan by themselves, unless you ask them to. So I asked (off the record) whether it's ok that I keep the same simcard and using same data plan (i use up around 2-6GB per month data) as I sell/buy my phones off contract. They said they don't care, unless they want me to change it, they won't.
So, 5-6 years with AT&T and 5 (soon to be 6) phones I changed tell me you're wrong.
My advice: sell your N1/captivate/g2/whatever, add $100/$200, get Atrix off contract, plop in the old simcard, never tell AT&T about it, and live happy.

There's a ton of evidence to the contrary, including my own experience. I bought an N1 outright and signed up for AT&T service. At the suggestion of a friend, I went into the corp store with an unlocked feature phone so I could sign up for the $15 unlimited data plan. I did, swapped SIMs, and in less than a day I got a text saying I had been switched to the 2 GB DataPro plan.
AT&T does IMEI scans, and if they are pretty good at telling which phones are smartphones. It's not 100% perfect, but pretty good.
That being said, there should be no reason that you need a new SIM for the Atrix unless you have a REALLY old pre-3G SIM. But, don't count on being able to keep a non-smartphone data plan.

Big difference being that you actually tried to go and get this grandfather $15/mo unlimited plan, which is no longer available. I got this plan many years ago, before iPhone, and just kept renewing my contract on the same terms, which AT&T was happy about. A year ago they already started doing away with unlimited plans, yet they gladly renewed my contract with unlimited data, even though I used the contract extension subsidy to get a new TouchPro2 from them, right from their store.
So maybe the moral here is that if you have the old plan with unlimited data - u can just keep extending it every 2 years without trouble. Cannot do that for new contracts.

Maybe we have our wires crossed here. Data Unlimited for non-smartphones is still very much available and is $15/month. But if you try to use it with a smartphone, 95% of the time they're going to automatically switch you to a DataPro plan for smartphones once they do an IMEI scan. This is exactly what happened with me. I signed up with a dumbphone, and within a day of switching my SIM to my N1 I got a text saying I had been switched.
Now if you are grandfathered into the old unlimited smartphone data plan, the absolutely you should have no trouble keeping it when swapping SIMs.

Data Plan Question

Hi,
Question about the Verizon data plan with Tbolt, not sure if it was asked before or not.
Right now, I've been lucky thus far to be grandfather from the old 29.99 unlimited data plan EVDO since I had the Samsung Omnia -> Blackberry Storm -> Motorola Droid -> Samsung Fascinate.
So if getting the TBold, would assume I can continue with the same data plan. Question is around the 4G. Is it the same data plan or would I need to give up my unlimited for the 4G and lose the unlimited data plan?
Uploaded with ImageShack.us
I should be up for a new phone in July..so pondering
Same plan, no need to change anything data wise
correct same plan will work and give you unlimited data but i would hurry if i was you and do it asap, the droid bionic is coming out soon and i have herd that once the bionic is out they will no longer offer the truely unlimted plan anymore, but if you are already on the tb with taht plan once bionic is released they can not make you change your plan.
I am so glad that we were able to keep the same plans for this phone. Unimited 4g?! Sounds good to me
grandfathered in all the way!!!!!!! Then when a better LTE device comes out, Ill be rocking that unlimited data for 30 bucks!
unlimit yourself...

Data plan on upgrade

I currently have an infuse 4g and still have my unlimited data plan. I know a couple of ATT reps are on the forum here, do you know if I will be able to stay grandfathered into unlimited data if I upgrade to the note? I was able to when I upgraded from my captivate to the infuse, really hoping I can with the note.

From what I understand, yes, but your safest bet is to go into the store to preorder to make sure it happens (I think). I've also read you want to be sure to call customer service when you receive your phone and talk to them BEFORE you activate -- I guess some people have also lost unlimited data this way.
Still kicking myself for dropping my unlimited data last summer to "save money" for vacation
I wont be preordering, as I need to wait for summer to build up some excess cash. Ill be using my dad's upgrade, then switching the phone to my line. There isn't LTE in my area yet, but I know there will be in the future, and I don't want any caps if at all possible. I usually use at least 2 gigs a month already, and the hspa+ in my area is really only marginally faster than 3g. Once I'm on LTE I know that I will definitely use more than 3 gigs a month, so hopefully I will be able to keep unlimited.
Anybody who has unlimited and is upgrading, please weigh in to confirm.
If I can't keep it, I may try to convince my parents to switch to sprint where I can have unlimited and stay future proof as data speeds increase.

Just so you know before you go making big decisions, there have already been speculations of Sprint stopping their unlimited plans for LTE phones. And since WiMax is now dead, their other 4g phones will be relegated to their current coverage with no expansion, which isn't that great IMO. I also think they will not be grandfathering people from their current unlimited plans as they didn't with the hotspots. Other carriers carried over grandfathered plans on hotspots and so they did with phones but sprint just said, Sorry we don't offer it anymore and all the sudden people lost unlimited data. Though they did offer people relatively cheap options to buy out of their broadband contracts it still blows
If you're not using your own upgrade to get the Note then there should be no worry of losing the unlimited data from upgrading your dad's line. I would definitely call customer service and let them know before you put your SIM card in the note. Tell them what you're doing and that you want to make sure you don't lose your unlimited data when activating the new phone.
this phone so far is not able to be pre-ordered in any AT&T store (unless they changed in the last 4 hours.)
Liq is correct, i spoke with a gal at AT&T Premier support whilst i was pre-ordering the Note on the AT&T Premier website and she wrote down on my "file" that i am mostly concerned with losing my grandfathered-in unlimited data plan. she said as long as i call them back after i receive the Note in the mail and have THEM activate it that i will not lose the grandfathered-in unlimited data plan. to activate it yourself is where you can lose the grandfathered-in unlimited data plan...total crap IMO but there it is.

Yes grandfathered, different data plan / billing code to support LTE but still unlimited none the less. Also the LTE android devices usually have visual voicemail like the iPhones included in the data plan unless you request to opt out of it.

Not always the case, but when it does happen is usually for 1 of 2 reasons. 1.) you just put your sim card in the new phone and never called at&t to have the IMEI number updated on your account and the correct corresponding unlimited data plan added changed over. P.S. Galaxy note requires a LTE SIM... (SIM ONLY SHOWS GLOBE DOESN'T SAY AT&T ON IT) 2.) You upgraded online, especially when through a third party such as Amazon, and didn't pay attention to the radio buttons and choose lets say 3GB instead of unlimited.

If you do it like this, you don't lose your unlimited data. Anyone who had unlimited data, and felt like they had to change to a 3 gig plan or something else simply missed the option.
The reason it makes everyone choose a "new" data plan, is because the system codes are different from unlimited 3g/hspa+ and unlimited LTE. (and unlimited iphone for that matter.)

They only show up if you currently have an unlimited data plan, if you are not on unlimited, you will not see the options. Just like any new customers only see the 300MB/3GB/5GB Data, and not the 200MB/2GB/4GB data plans anymore for the $5 difference, which is a better deal anyways vs $10 additional regularly.

Quick answer is yes you will. Just be sure you make it clear you have unlimited and that you want it carried over. Seems some people let the phone jockeys move them to a lesser plan. They almost always try.

Make sure you go to the att store and ask them. Last month they try to switch me over to the 2gb pro plan without telling me. They try to tell me you can't get it back. I told them imma cancel my service with y'all then. Five minutes later I had it again
Make sure they make your new unlimited plan an LTE unlimited plan too... I went to the ATT store yesterday and found out I had no internet on my phone... was a simple mistake and only took a minute to fix.
Now let me say that they told me that my old data plan was note compatible with this phone when called to activate. She was waiting to hear back from her manager about me not switchin off current grandfathers plan when she enabled the sim in the note and disconnected the sim in my SGS2 so we were disconnected. Changing from unlimited to LTE plan

Got my HTC One yesterday and this morning I get a text from AT&T saying "Did you know an eligible data plan is required for your LTE device? Please call 611 to select a plan and establish your LTE data connection today".
I've had an unlimited plan for years, although I don't use GB's worth of data each month (use Wifi at home and at work). Do I really need to switch over to one of those plans?
You need to call and get them to switch you to an unlimited LTE plan. I had the same when I came from an iPhone. You are grandfathered so if they give you any trouble remind them. But they should be able to get your taken care of. You will get those messages until you switch

It does on my grandfathered unlimited plan. I switch between Lte and hspa apns to get 10gb unthrottled every month. You must have a special magic plan that has no throttling

Everyone on an unlimited plan gets throttled, there are no longer unlimited plans, BUT AT&T makes exceptions for some people, and some people don't see any throttling at all. I don't know what warrants this exception to the rule, but "unlimited" is simply a word now and only means unlimited to a degree, everyone is supposed to get throttled (3GB at 3G, 5GB at LTE).
Call AT&T and have them switch you from the regular unlimited plan to the LTE version. They should keep your unlimited in tact.

Thanks they did transfer me to unlimited LTE no questions asked. A few months ago when I was on the road for a few weeks I did use up a lot of mobile data and I did get a message saying I was going to be throttled. I believe I got that after using about 3GB.
I have unlimited + 200 texts, and I was told that they couldn't let me keep the 200 texts and upgrade to LTE unlimited. I would have to get unlimited text for an extra $10 to get LTE

I guess so. I called CS and they supposedly were able to split it into a $30 unlimited LTE + $5 200 text plan. I'll check my account later to make sure this was the case.
Make absolutely certain that, after changing over to the LTE unlimited plan that they don't screw you over. They took mine away after I had been swapped to it. I checked the account the next day and saw that my unlimited data was removed and called them and got it re-enabled.
After I upgrade/change features I ALWAYS check on it. I absolutely do not trust AT&T.
Currently rocking a Marble White SAMSUNG SGH-I747... next one will be an HTC ONE!
