Sudden death and Samsung repair services - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Dear all,
There's something wrong I don't understand with Samsung repair services and the sudden death problem found on the Galaxy S3.
One day, the touch screen on my phone stop working randomely for no reason, sometimes more than 15 times a day, depends on what I am doing. My phone is a GS3 with 16gb and I bought it just few weeks after it has been released. Then I tried to search on internet and found the 'sudden death problem' that many people are suffering with.
According to my use, I did not modified anything on my phone which mean it has never been rooted or something like this. Instead of that, I prefer to keep it clean and send it back to the Samsung repair services to fix this issue.
The problem is, after 2 requests from Samsung, the random problem of the touch screen was still there.
- The first time, Samsung kept my phone about 2 weeks and they said that they had just made a firmware upgrade. When I recovered my phone, I was very disappointed to see that Samsung did not fix the problem. Then I decided to send it back again.
- The second time, Samsung kept my phone 2 weeks more and when I recovered it, they said that nothing wrong has been found. Of course, I made a letter for them to explain clearly what was wrong with this phone. But they did not care about this problem.
So, I was very angry and don't know what to do. I recovered my phone and the problem was still there. Of course, I thought I can throw this expansive phone to the rubbish bin, but when I search over the internet if this problem can be fixed, I found that many solutions was explained clearly in many forums and all over the world.
At the same time, I met one other person who has got the same problem with the same phone and he told me when he called Samsung, they replied they don't want to accept phones with this kind of problem.
So my question is, why Samsung refuse to fix this problem which is under their responsability ? If many forums explain how to solve this issue, why Samsung repair services cannot do it by themself ? Many people are not an expert and are allergic to the idea of thinking that they should try to fix this problem by themselves!
It's amazing! Just tried to search over google by yourself and you will find that many people send their phone with the same problem and Samsung did not fix anything to solve it. This is is unbelievable !!!
Thanks.
Regards

I'm from France but the problem with Samsung repair service seems not only happen in my country.
For example, you can check here also ... and I'm sure you will find many other places where customers have problems with their GS3.

Sorry Man, but this is an expansive phone and nobody seem taking care of this problem so here is one post with more explanation ... if necessary, you can delete the other post but very sorry for the double post.
Just trying to help other people which have the same problem and don't know what to do with their defective touch screen phone ...
Thanks for you understanding

Well man suggest a post in Question and Answers with symptoms of your problem may lead to a solution .
Your phone is not dead it does not have sudden death so your title is misleading ..
You have a problem with the phone FREEZING .
Suggest you start at the beginning and factory reset phone .
Then post the actual problem in Q&A along with your firmware details .

The freezing problem seems coming from the emmc chip related to the sudden death as many people are talking about.
There are already many posts to solve that problem like here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2133401
so no need to add another question and answers for that issue.
My freezing issue is already fixed by me and not by samsung.
So if you've got the freezing problem and decide to send your phone to Samsung repair services, they will give it back to you with exactly the same problem. That's what happened to many people. Very strange and unusual from an after sale services, don't you think so ?

The repair centres probably don't know the difference between the update 7 sds fixes (that causes freezes a lot) or the newer fixes (XXEMB1 and newer) that freeze much, much less.
Samsung really should be pushing all carriers to release newer builds so the service centres can flash them and everyone can be freeze free. A lot of carriers are still pushing pre MB1 builds and the service centres can only flash the latest for each carrier.
The cause of the freezes is within the kernel anyway. Its not hardware so sending for repair is pretty pointless

Bunch of Issues.

First of all, since this is my first post please excuse any noobish things that I might say.
And I have done a reasonable amount of research but was unable to find a solution and would really like to apologise if this has been asked before.
I bought a sgs2 about an year ago and since the very first day I had problems with receiving calls and even making them.
If I'm sitting at one place everything's good but as soon as I move something goes very wrong and the call drops.well if I'm moving I'll be glad to even get or make a call although the signal in the notification shows full.
Now on the stock ROM,the signal strength is about -61dbm 19-20asu but on any other ROMs that I've tried it never goes beyond -89dbm 11-12 asu.
Next I read a lot about flashing different modems that might solve the problem but no.its like nothing seems to work.(BTW I tried a lot of modems for my country and others as well and used getril also to match the ril's as I read about that in forums.)
So im really very pissed with my phone and yesterday I was researching for a solution for the above mentioned problem and came across someone having a problem about losing the baseband and imei after flashing and thanking heavens that at least I don't have that problem.
But WHAM.The same problem hit me right in the face ASA flashed a modem.
So NOW I have a ****ty network problem(please excuse my language but you have no idea what its really like)and now no imei and no baseband.
Luckily I had a backup of the stock ROM and when I restored my phone at least I got the imei and baseband but when I rebooted my phone for something, the problem came back.
This phone is otherwise very nice but I'm really having a hard hard time getting through with this and unfortunately my father won't buy me a new phone for another one year as I promised him I'd use this phone for at least two years since this was way above the budget he gave me.
BTW I'm currently using revolt jb ROM by johnhany.
I'd be really very greatful if one of you millions of geniuses could help me.
If you need any further details in finding a solution I would provide it ASA I see what it is that you might want to know.
Thank you in advance.

Well sorry for posting it in the wrong place but were you trying to give me the solution to my problem or just telling me to post a question in the q and a forum?

Do you really need to open all these threads?
You require a fix for a broken motherboard ???? .
#|what else can you do but have it replaced .
XDA is yet to find a method of flashing a new motherboard .
STOP opening multiple threads on the same subject its very childish .

Super slow performance I9300

Hi guys,
I have a problem,
Since last week I was using the omega rom. I was following it since version 8, I guess, and I always had a really poor performance:
Home screen redraw, no matter which launcher I use
Poor multitasking, I tried different kernels and swap
Freezing while typing or running the applications
No response to touch or scrolling and then going crazy
And probably more stuff...
so I decided to go back to stock rom.
I reset the counter, flash stock rom with odin to the latest version which Samsung just pushed to Italy and factory reset. then I decided not to install any unnecessary application to see the results but unfortunately all problems are still present
Any idea what can I do?!!!
Thanks in advance
Total wipe of the phone .

I forgot to mention but after going back to stock I already did factory wipe and wipe cache, so the phone status is normal right now. No root after that but still facing all the issues.
Go to Samsung. May be a faulty unit

u interested in trying CM?
I can go for CM, but I really don't know my phone has a problem or not. Most of my friends around me have S3 and I was trying to face the same problems on their phone but I wasn't successful. So I started thinking maybe there is something wrong with my phone. Specially when I face stupid problems like scrolling in the app menu or redrawing of home screen even if I just check the phone-book or messages.
Does this sudden death of S3 has anything in common with my problems?!!! just curiosity...

Some users reported very laggy and poor performance before their phones died. It is a known problem of emmc wear it seems.
How old is your phone anyway?i am sorry but my phone is superfast no matter the rom i have used. And i had quite some...i doubt that CM will do you any good.
I bough it on June, which makes my phone almost 6-7 months...

Do one more thing. Install EMMC Brickbug Check from the play store. Once you started check if you have the infamous VTU00M chipset and revision 0xf1. It seems that a specific lot of this chip revision have the firmware issue that leads to SDS.
I checked that, and yes I have that chip set but since I did the check on all my friends phone including five S3 and one galaxy note and all of them were showing same result I was considering maybe it's not the problem.

Only some of the VTU00M chips have this problem. The problem is caused by corrupted data due to a bug in the emmc's firmware and the new XELLA kernel (and others)
are supposed to fix that.
So should I take the phone to Samsung or wait for a complete death to hit my phone
It's kind of difficult to convince them that the phone has a problem, because most of the problems will go after a reset and then after couple of hours everything will be again super slow...

If i were you i would put my phone in a totally stock status. With TA and all that. After that if the problem persists i will go to samsung after some time
so at least will show the poor performance when checked. At this moment i bet most of the Samsung service centers know about the emmc issue and you might get a motherboard replacement.
Total wipe, reset, format + stock jellybean = high performance
Hope it helps

Thanks my friend, I already went back to stock. I will try to go to Samsung service center as soon as possible.

I have had the sudden death issue before. Sent my phone off, had it fixed and returned. Mother board replaced. but after getting it back my phone feels rather laggy and slow.
Just downloaded the EMMC app and found I do have VTU00M chipset and revision 0xf1. (after being fixed)
so what should I do now? Currently running stock JB, no root. would i be best off rooting and adding xella kernal?
cheers

[Q] Phone keeps shutting down

Hi guys.
My phone shuts down at random moments. I can boot it up again by holding the power button for about 10 seconds. Sometimes, not always, the phone feels hot and batterylife dropped. I have been struggling with this problem ever since i got this phone. I hoped to solve it with installing a new kernel and rom. I am now on Slimbean 3.1.0. The phone was initially on XLQ6 4.0.4. This didn't change anything, unfortunately.
I have also tried:
- removing external SD
- placing a new battery (which has no room to move, in case anyone suggests the battery might be moving)
- wiping caches
The strange thing is that my friend has bought his i9100 together with mine in the same order. He is also on XLQ6 and is experiencing the same issues. Less often than me, however.
My smalband is still on XLQ6. Is it possible that this causes my problems? Or is it more likely that my friend and me simply bought phones from a bad batch or something (hardware related)? I really don't want to send back my phone. That is my absolute last resort.
EDIT: Problem solved! Installing the application "Load Monitor" and enabling the "wake lock" function has done the trick. No more shutdowns or reboots!
Anyone?
2 devices with the same issue?
I'd be at the store where I bought it right now.
I will do that when I am absolutely sure that it is hardware related. However, if anyone has a potential solution I would really like to solve this issue myself.

Same with me. change from 4.0.4 WLPT to 4.0.4 WLPY but problem still presists.
Does anyone know if changing smalband (if that is possible?) could make a difference? Because that is the only similarity to the original state of my phone. A lot of AT&T users in the USA experienced the same problems also with 4.0.4. However, nobody can come up with a solution.

If it is heating near the camera, it's facing death soon.
If it is new and warranty isn't voided, why not flashing the carrier ROM and get a new one?

Because I don't like to lose my phone for a couple of weeks. And I prefer to fix these things myself. I have seen so many topics about this on XDA and Google. There must be a solution to it.
Is it possible that these problems are caused by my modem? That is the only unchanged thing since I have had this phone.
I might have found a possible solution. I've read something on a Dutch forum about sim-cards causing these issues. So I have placed a new sim-card and the problem hasn't appeared in the last 3 days. Before that, the problem was occuring about 3-6 times in one day. It's too early to say this has solved my problem, but it definitely made a difference so far. If it keeps functioning perfectly for the next couple of days I will close this topic.
Symptoms were merely reduced. Phone still shuts down approximately each 2 days. Much better than it was before though. Why would a sim-card change reduce, but not solve the problem? This is starting to hurt my brain.

You may experience sleep of death. What WiFi chipset do you have? I had the same issue on a Murata Wi-Fi chipset.
Yup, Murata chipset. I've googled some more on SoD. I have now installed an app called "Load Monitor" and enabled Wake Lock in preferences. This should prevent the phone from going into deep sleep, apparantly.
Some portugal carrier had a problem with lte sim card or something like that.
I really don't see how a sim card can actually mess with a phone.
Maybe the enabling of some features screws it up.

In my case Samsung Service Team replaced the motherboard. My new MB has a Samsung Electronics wifi chipset. Two weeks now and no SoD.
That sounds good. However, ever since I have installed Load Monitor my phone runs fine. It drains approximately 40% of my entire battery, but it lasts easily until the end of the day.
But again, I shouldn't get too excited. Sim-card change seemed to work in the first few days as well.
Will be continued...
It has been over a week since I have installed Load Monitor. My phone hasn't shut down once. Problem appears to be solved! I hope more people will read this topic, because I have seen a lot of desperate people during my search to a solution.
The only disadvantage is the battery usage of the application. I now have approximately 40-50% at the end of the day instead of 60-70%.

hardware problem?

My s9+ "died" over Christmas and wouldn't start. The internal storage only displayed about 5mb in recovery and the PC wouldn't recognise it.
I then got an s10+, which whilst good, isn't something I really wanted or felt was a worth while upgrade.
I since then managed to get my s9+ up and running again by flashing the latest stock firmware and using the PIT to partition and get the right storage space back.
I gave the s9 to my son, however every week or 2, the device goes in to an infinite boot loop as it did at Christmas and the only way to fix is to factory reset.
Having flashed a fresh firmware with PIT, I'm confident another flash won't fix it, but do wonder if anyone has any ideas or has seen this behaviour before? Am I facing a hardware fault, or is there some magic I can perform to fix it?
I have wondered if underclocking the CPU may fix it, but in not even be a CPU fault...
My frustration is, that it does work instantly after a factory reset for at least a week or two, so I'm not sure why it keeps failing in the same way after that time. My son has no software the same as mine installed, so I don't think it's any of the applications.
You fix hardware problem with software workarounds. Try samsung service center instead.

Urm... not quite sure what you mean. I'm not confident it's a hardware issue ad the device works for a period of time before is goes in to the endless boot loop.
I suspect it's a hardware problem, please visit your nearby service center.

It does feel like a hardware issue. I just don't understand why it will work for a period of time before suddenly failing again.
