I'm considering removing the ear-pieces from my Lobster headphones, and fitting a 3.5mm stereo line socket like this one: http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=1210&criteria=3.5mm stereo socket&doy=24m5 to the end which would connect to one of these http://www.coolsmartphone.com/index.php?option=articles&task=viewarticle&artid=421&Itemid=3 FM transmitters to get DAB radio in my car.
The reason for modifying the headphones would be to retain the antenna function of the headphone lead, which would be strategically placed in the car to hopfully pick up a decent signal.
What do you think?

Presumably you can get a wire (normal jack female to normal jack male) instead of detroying your headsets!
I wasn't sure whether an alternative cable would work as an antenna for the DAB radio channels like the original head-set does.
I have two headsets, so doesn't really matter if I butcher one of them.
Can you confirm that when using a 2.5mm to 3.5mm adapter and alternative headphones, the DAB radio stations still work?

From what I've read, just like most other electrical goods, some are good, and some are not.
According to this review http://www.coolsmartphone.com/index.php?option=articles&task=viewarticle&artid=421&Itemid=3 of the Audia X transmitter, the sound quality is "excellent", but I guess sound quality is quite a subjective thing, and what's excellent for one person's set-up may not be for another's.

For the best result you are better off soldering rather than plug in, wherever you can.
I am going to put two phono sockets on mine, to plug into Hi Fi so that I have DAB reception on stereo.

Yeah, thats the plan, remove the ear-pieces from the headphones and solder a 3.5 mm stereo socket on the end so I can plug in the FM transmitter.

I've tried 2 types of headphones with this but the radio and tv function won't work - not enough signal.
So I guess it's back to the original plan of butchering the headphones.
Sorry didn't realise that FM trannie had a male plug on it. thought it would have a female.
Mind you, being a trannie, how can you be sure.

I've just got around to giving it a go.
I bought my FM transmitter (Power Trip FM) from HMV, and it comes with both 3.5mm and iPod connections.
I used the stereo 2.5mm male to 3.5mm female converter I bought off eBay.
Plugged it all together and hey presto, TV with the sound coming through the car speakers.
I'm in a good DAB area, so the signal is fine - even better with playing DAB radio.
No chopping or soldering required!!!
ringp3ace, are you saying that you're successfully tuning into a DAB signal using only a 3 pole 2.5mm jack? From Aleemz’s experiments with this earlier in this thread I thought the conclusion was that this wouldn't work. You must be in an area of ridiculously good DAB signal!

Unfortunately its very disappointing. It does not charge the phone whilst plugged in. The audio quality is acceptable whilst the car isn't moving. Part of this is due to the very poor quality USB charger supplied, a better one from my Sat Nav improved the situation slightly.
I already have a cheap transmitter that plugs in the 3.5mm socket, but this seems to cut off the bass from the music.
I am looking to replace my Sat Nav and MP3 player with the phone. I have already ordered a car cradle, but would consider a cradle with built-in FM transmitter. I also don't really want the hands free built-in like the transmitter above. I would rather use my bluetooth headset.
Any suggestions?
I know people have mentioned the motorola T505, but I suspect that the battery life on that isn't more than a couple of hours.

I got a slightly different one, but the link now shows this item... Universal audio input, usb socket for charging anything you choose. Audio quality is reasonable, but it's a transmitter so it will always sound a bit dodgy. Also, the hero is a phone so its audio quality isn't incredible either, but it'll do for whiling away a road trip!
The only way you'll get high quality sound is with an aux input cable, decent speakers, and a high quality source file playing on a decent mp3 player.
Product-specific docks are stupid.

Hi, I have searched on this forum for a better HTC hero headphone replacement thread but I've had no luck, also Google hasnt been helpful too which is why I am creating a new thread.
I have misplaced my Hero headphone and I would like to know which headphone will be a better replacement for the phone. I purchased iPhone 3GS headphone today but it can only Play/Pause (I am returing back tomorrow) Any suggestion will be highly appreciated and useful

Why does it matter that it plugs into the USB port? Its got a 3.5mm jack on it so you can plug your headphones into it. I don't actually use one myself, I plug my headphones directly into the 3.5mm jack on the Hero and don't use any remote.
As to headphones in your price range, I'd look at ones by Etymotics, Shure and Ultimate Ears. If you can add another $50, I'd recommend the Ultimate Ears Super.fi 5 Pros (the pro version have a twin driver). I had a set up until about 6 - 12 months ago and they were really good. If you can't afford to go for those, then any by the 3 I mentioned in the upper end of your price bracket should give you a pretty good sound.
Be aware though, the headphones will be limited by both the quality of the music you've ripped (I wont touch anything below 320Kbps, but prefer FLAC (not really possible on the Hero though)) and also by the Hero itself. Although, from my occasional use, I don't find the Hero all that bad a music player. I stress I only use it occasionally though, normally I have my dedicated MP3 player with me.

Yeah, I'm not too worried about the sound quality. That is, I care - but I'm not an audiophile. I'm more after the noise isolation as I ride a lot of public transportation and walk through cities.
I didn't want it to plug into the usb port because then I can't charge and listen at the same time. Some how, the included headphones are able to control the music/phone through the 3.5mm jack. I'm surprised there are no "aftermarket" buds that can do that?

As to headphones, take a look at the Shure SE110, I'm a big fan of Shure and had their entry level headphones about 4 years ago, really liked them then and have steadily upgraded since.

I tried iPhone 3GS headphone also, but it can only Play/Pause, but the mic doesn't work!!!!
I have another expensive one, Beats by Dr. Dre-Tours In-Ear headphones, it's the same as iphone headphone, mic doesn't work also.
I thought it problably because there's problem with my hero, but then, I tried the hero headphone....without any problem.....but I just don't like it!!!!

I am trying to connect hdmi to my projector. Unfortunately the projector only has 1 watt audi out and i cant get any audio out of the phone at the same time. Anything i can do?
I've not tried it, but does the headphone 3.5mm jack output from the phone still work? If so you could get a seperate pair of powered speakers, or 3.5mm to phono jack plug lead and plug into hifi / surround sound system?
Thats really tough, I dont think the phone has any settings to change this.. and I am guessing the projector has no Audio outputs? (most don't)
I doubt very much the phone will output to headphones at the same time as HDMI, as this creates more power consumption.. if it were my projector (and I may do this on mine yet) I would hack the projector.. the speaker is a waste of space anyway, open it up and remove the speaker cable extend it out and plug this up to an amp (you could also stick a switch in line so you can opt to have external speaker or internal (some cool switching jack sockets you could mount in the projector that would do this automaticly)
only problem is it may only be mono...
This is of course a last ditch effort.. after all software and phone mods have been exhausted (As they can't even get HDMI working on any Roms yet like CM7) I doub't there will be many hacks availible yet.

Been doing some research and it seems some android devices can output to one or the other while using HDMI, might pay to play with the order that you plug them in.. try having headphones plugged in first etc..
Also perhaps try with a bluetooth stereo headset like MW600 plugged into your stereo .. might be a rough fix??

A cheap and easy solution to this is I bought the USB-C to 3.5mm DAC from HTC. Join the HTC club and it was £5.95 with free next day delivery.
Much louder and very good quality. Can't find any specification on what BIT the DAC is and I don't have the tools to measure it but its far better than the build in 3.5mm jack.

I've got tinnitus in my right ear from constantly having a headphone in it for a number of years. I used to always listen on the loudest volume. With the xperia xz you can have active noise cancelling headphones, I can warmly recommend the nc31em in ear, I bought a pair for 15 bucks and it uses the processor of the phone so you don't have to carry a big dongle. Now I can listen at half volume and still hear everything better than I did before!
I received a Griffin iTrip Clip Bluetooth headphone adapter so I could be wire free from my phone and found this improved the loudness and remained good quality audio. You may get a bit of breakage occasionally if multitasking but for £14 from Amazon, it's a cracking piece of kit!

I have followed the steps of signing up for HTC Club, and ordering the adapter straight away. It really came next day with no extra charge for delivery. And oh boy, the sound is amazing! I am bit of geek when it comes to headphones, so i have a multiple different types. The difference between using the audio jack output of the phone and using the usb c adapter is NIGHT and DAY. Not only loudness is incomparable higher, the pure quality of the sound is improved in every way. I do not believe that there is DAC hidden in the adapter, as it is quite small and low priced. What makes difference in my opinion is the additional power phone can send to the headphones by using the USB C out. Difference is so big, that this workaround can be seen as hidden features to extent, as Sony has not said a thing about using your USB C out for audio. Now I truly understand why the removal of headphone jack make sense as even phones with not the best DAC and AMP can produce great sound thanks to power of USB C.
In case of Sony Xperia XZ however, it looks as DAC is of a top- notch quality(it officially supports Hi-Res codecs after all) but the AMP is criminally under-powered and so combined with Sony obeying EU regulations for safe listening volume converts to quality sound but on quiet side. But thanks to this adapter the DAC is no longer tied to volume level set by headphone jack.
Everyone who owns this phone must buy this, especially considering the low price of the adapter. You need hear it to believe it.

I was on another trip recently and one scheduled for next week. Indeed the sound out of the headphone jack is extremely low so I ordered one of these gadgets and will arrive on Friday. The success from others is what I expect to gain and will report back

Just so folks know, there are two types of USB-C 3.5mm adapters out there - Digital and Analog.
All decent phones should support the Digital adapters, since they are just USB Audio Class devices made small. You could also plug them into a PC. Because they contain the DAC and amplifier, they will be spendy.
However, the $2 Passive adapters have no DAC in them. They trigger a special mode of the phone that basically puts the USB-C jack into an analog 3.5mm mode and the rest is just plastic and metal. The DAC is in the phone. The phone has to specifically support this mode, and will likely indicate USB-C Analog Accessory Mode in their specifications. Xperia XZ Premium does NOT support this mode, and never will - it has to be built into the hardware.

Because people are trying different USB Audio headphones. Sony is not in control of their quality or amplification since the DAC and amp are in the headphones. For those using different 3.5mm headsets, their quality varies greatly. Sony expects folks to buy theirs, preferably with their active noise canceling that they wrote software for. It works well but as stated, they are not very loud.

ok so I have an audio system in my car, and volume in headphones gets super low compared to CD (I know CD quality is the best you can get i think) but still its VERY very low compared to it, in aux on 13db I get same loudness as 7db in CD, which means I have to turn it on almost twice as much as a cd to hear same loudness, (why dont I simply turn my audio more than usual on a cd?) because I like listening to very loud music and I some times get to 23db on a cd and its very loud and on aux i must reach at least 40db to get close to being as loud but my audio system only supports up to 30db so I am getting aux loudness of 15-16db compared to CD.
will the usb 3.0 to AUX DAC help me get louder volume?
