Ok This has been asked a million times I am sure but thats the problem I am running into. So many topics and replies to sift through, its got me all confused on the safe way to go about rooting and making a Nandroid. I believe I have got the rooting part down (per sticky), its the Nandroid which is the confusing part.
I came from a severely outdated D2 Global which was simple to handle with the cd I made, and using the D2 Global Bootstrap app.
Is there anything available which is extremely stable for the 2.3.5 X2 or is my only safe bet to revert back to 2.3.4? (last time I tried that back years ago I bricked my D2)
Eclipse was great when I had my x2 on 235. The op has a good Tutorial on 235.
About nandroid, I wrote this and it works great.
It is a work around cure for the most frustrating result of having a locked bootloader and flashing a rom that needs to be wiped thereby removing your bootstrap.
Read this. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21116880&postcount=26
The op is a hard read I know.

The dx2 is unbrickable!!! Nobody has ever not been able to sbf.
I bricked mine because I flashed the milestone x2 firmware. But I wanted a different phone anyway. Now I hate the iphone.

really only custom rom for 2.3.5 is eclipse, which is the most stable rom for most.
other roms need to be flashed 2.3.4
the X2 can still be flashed back and forth from 2.2 to 2.3.5
lots of links in my list
sd_shadow's [Collection] of Links for: Droid X2 (MB870)
Both of those threads you guys posted mention 2.3.4 not 2.3.5
That is where I am confused, do I have to go back to 2.3.4 ?
Depends on what you want to do, but those threads have not been updated, since magic md5 root was made.
and I posted 4 links so...

Ok got it rooted, been busy so have not worked on it...simple to do thx.
Now here ia all I plan to do:
I am keeping the stock rom and just freezing apps, not removing any.
On my D2G I used bootstrap to make an exact copy of the rom in case of disaster, do I need to do this for the DX2?
Also I used Voodoo (I believe) to keep from having an OTA screw me up, do I also need that and will either or both of these apps work with the X2?
I also used Android Overclock on my D2G but it said it isnt for the DX2, is there any other app as easy and stable for the DX2?
And last but not least after I copy my rom if needed, what is the best way to change the stupid name of the internal memory (SD) so my other apps only recognize my real SD Card as an SD and my internal as internal...?

Is there a way I can root a stock 2.2 vibrant without losing all the apps and data? My wife wants me to rom her phone but she does not want to lose any apps. I plan on using Titaium Backup but the phone has to be rooted first. Im stuck and not sure which way to go or is it a lost battle and I wont be able to root it?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Use SuperOneClick to root your phone. It will not delete anything, but it will install the Superuser app.
I used this

I just rooted my DX2 using the Droid3 one click root method. I don't like being rooted. I have frozen some apps and changed my boot animation and my fonts. All using ROM Manager. My question is, 3 actually,
1. How do I unroot?
2. Can I unroot without having to factory reset my phone?
3. Is there a way to back up my phone(settings, apps, contacts) without being rooted?

I am a noob at rooting. I was afraid to even take the leap. Now it seems that my phone is slower and laggy. I don't want to brick my phone trying to fix this.
Try using setcpu or ROM toolbox to set the CPU higher. Can also use auto task killer memory optimizer to free up ram on your phone. I'd say try that before unrooting. Not sure if you can unroot. I think you'll have to do a SBF

You can just SBF your phone, it's not as scary as it seems. The directions provided here on XDA are detailed and easy to follow.
Still, if it were me in you position, I'd not only keep root, but go ahead and install Recovery and do a backup. That way you don't have to lose your data.
I used to think the same thing. But keeping root has allowed me to load multiple roms and scripts, now I'm a flash addict! Flashing roms and running scripts is very easy when you follow the instructions on this forum. I suggest loading the liberty rom and trying it out before unrooting or sbfing.

try clearing cache from stock recovery and see if that speeds things up for ya. It should.
U wont lose ANY data if u only clear the cache.
Breaking humpty dumpty is fine, remember to make nandroid so you can put your phone back to how you had it
Quite fun making a nandroid and trying out new ROMs and mods. You can rename nandroids too so you know which one is which, just put a "."But and then what ever you want after everything. So like 2011-12-23.Molten or something, just don't mess with the numbers.
Good luck!

Ok, so, I have flashed Eclipse to my phone. I downloaded Titanium backup to restore all of my data and apps but it isn't recognizing any of my backed up files. I don't understand. I even manually downloaded ADW again and went to restore my configuration and settings and it says there is no files. I know they are there I can see them when I connect my phone to the PC. Also when I open Easy Installer it isn't recognizing most of my APK files I have. Can you tell me what is going on please?

Try switching the files ur trying to restore to the other sdcard.
I suspect this is ur problem because eclipse comes with sd card flip
So I think that ti is looking in the wrong.place.
Just use a file explorer to move it all to the other sdcard
reboot and them try again

Also
U don't need "easy installer" I don't think
Just use a file explorer (like root explorer--HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS APP!)
And navigate to the apk u would like to install and tap it. Then use "package installer" to install it.
Although some apps(mostly system apps) u will need to manually "push"(copy&paste) to /system/app using root explorer(mount /system as rw first...little gray button on top in root explorer) then change permission to rw-r--r--. Reboot and app will be there.

Boot into CWM and make a backup or use Titanium backup to make a backup.
I did use CWM, but it said it backed up "data", which to me means it wasn't a total image with the ROM and apps.

If you do a full backup with CWM, then when you get the new device, BE CERTAIN that you are at the same bootloader version before using that backup. (If you try to use a different BL, then you WILL brick the new device.) However, assuming the same BL version, you can just go into CWM again (assuming you have it installed) and do a full restore. The device should look and act just as it did when you backed it up. Even the ROM will be restored. I do this often when switching between ROMS for reviews, etc.
But, your concern for PAID apps is unwarranted. They are on your Android (Google) account. Even if you get a totally DIFFERENT device, they will show up as paid in the "My Apps" part of the Market. Also, most (???) of the free apps show up on my list.
Most (paid) apps are available to install on as many Android devices as you have (and sign on with the same account). The only exceptions are that some apps are not compatible with certain devices (phone vs tablet, etc) and some developers' license agreements only allow a single install (very few do this).
Best wishes on your replacement. I had the same problem (loose power connector) on my GTab but it was way out of warranty so I had to just solder on an external connector and run wires inside the device. It looks ugly but it works.
bl1.2 to 1.1
I got the gtab back, and it's now on bl1.2 (but still gingerbread), whereas it first came with 1.1, and I rooted it to Gtabcomb. So how do I get it back to 1.1 so I can restore my backup?
Visit this site here.
From there you can download the nvflash package for 1.1 boot loader with CWM pre-installed. Follow the instructions on the site for Code Red (I know you could do yellow but red is safer and you don't want to keep anything currently on the tab anyway.) After the nvflash, instead of installing a new rom, you can go into CWM and restore your backup.
That said, I suggest you don't do this. Most all new development is on the 1.2 boot loader now, even Viewsonic if you call them "developers". Anyway you can restore all your apps, even paid ones, through the market and if you did a Titanium Backup you can restore your data (I don't recommend restoring the apps, just the data after reinstalling from the market). Point is, you are already here (1.2) might as well try something new!
Of course, if you really want your old setup back, you can always try to go back. I personally have never had much luck with backups of any kind and pretty much accept that when I flash or crash, it's time to start over.

Noted. Didn't know there was a better/safer method for switching between bootloaders. Most of the guides/info/instructions I have found recommend an nvflash to the stock rom for the bootloader version you want end up on. I follow these guides when switching versions:
Know Thy Bootloader
Gtablet for Dummies
and have never had a problem, so I was only pointing him to information that has always worked well for me. I have never tried the ADB method or the .zip installable method to switch and I didn't want to suggest that he try something I haven't successfully done myself, even if it looks easier.
Anyway please do advise on your ADB method. I still get a little nervous when switching BL versions even after doing it many times over the last year! By the way rajeevvp, thank you for the wealth of information you have posted here on this site.

As long as there is a "clockworkmod" directory-tree in the root of the SD card (internal or external), and CWM recognizes the SD card (depending on the version of CWM, it might not use the external SD card at all), you should be able to do the restore.
If you install CWM-2.5.1.1-bekit-0.8, and the clockworkmod directory is on the external SD card, move that entire directory tree to the root of the internal card. CWM v08 uses the internal SD card for backups and restores.
Or else, you can install CWM-2.5.1.3 from bekit.net, which will use the external SD card if one is detected, and fall back to the internal one otherwise.

The ADB method involves flashing VS's stock recovery and then using that to downgrade/upgrade the bootloader using a simplified version of gojimi's downgrade/VS stock upgrade install zip file.
In review, I got a new board installed under warranty cuz of the power pin being bad. Was having trouble mounting the ext-sd.
Anyway, so many hours wasted, but FINALLY got Titanium Backup on it, restored everything, and things were back to normal EXCEPT tons of lockups. Browsing, using apps, didn't seem to matter. Then I remembered I dropping the CPU speed when I first went to Gtabcomb 9 months ago. I think that helped, but in the middle of updating some apps it did it again, and when I rebooted the security pin I had set up didn't work! What next?!?
So obviously needed to reset to factory, but then decided WTH, why not bring this thing up to the highest Android 3 I could. So I'm going to change from bl1.1 to 1.2, and go with Gtabcombover. So my questions are - what's the best way to get to 1.2, and will Titanium be able to restore my backup under 1.2?
Did you do a "wipe data/factory reset" and/or repartition the internal SD card after you installed CWM?

---------- Post added at 07:58 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:39 PM ----------
Jackson....I went ahead and took a chance on taking out the spaces and it worked perfect. You are a saint imo!
perfect
Yeah when I saw your OP and you said 'my stock root rom' I figured you do what most of us do and name your roms to help remember them... which is a great idea but just be sure to leave out any spaces, i.e., original_stock_root_rom
can anyone give me their nandroid back up of stock rom? I need it to go back to stock..I have to return the device in few days..
I just installed eclipse 2.3 on my droid X2 2.3.5 Everything seems to be working okay except Google play or YouTube won't let me install anything always says connection timed out if I go to look at my apps installed it says connection timed out. Did I miss something during the install? Also Trying to check the weather with the built-in weather service app Andison no connection however I can browse the web and post on here using my droid

2.3.5 I tried resetting the time and clearing cache but that made no difference. I did a factory reset and now YouTube loads and plays videos but pretty slowly. And google play will show all the links on it's home page but once you click on one it just tried to load it and then says connection time out.

I'm new to flashing. I've only flashed my moto triumph. And this phone. I'm assuming you mean flash the eclipse 2.3 with v6 nandroid? 76mb?
Two Methods two fix this.
Hey..
I know only two methods to fix this..
1. Either this is a server problem.. so try using a vpn.
2. If you are rooted, download Root Browser. Now, go to System/etc and delete a file named "hosts".
This should do the trick.
~Hit Thanks if I helped

Deleting the hosts file did not help unfortunatly. Nothing has changed. I'm not familiar with creating VPNs

@4S4D_4SS4SSiN Motorola Droid's are a little different than other android devices, so the usually fixes don't always apply.
And what will this do? I'm just curious of its purpose

It just installs eclipse, but using a slightly different process, sometimes works when usual install does not work.

Cool. Just to verify I go into bsr and backup everything. Then I delete data / factory reset phone, delete cache and delkvik cache and then flash the nandroid eclipse 2.3 rom and should be ready to go?
Just try it... You don't need a custom ROM for it..
