[Q] Factory reset not deleting data? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

Hello wonderful, helpful people. Problem, need to send back old Gnote after "no sim card" errors and warranty replacement. I have used Odin to flash the stock ATT crapRom. Is boots into the ATT new phone set up so I know that worked. I have gone into recovery three times and wiped all data and reset. When I boot up phone and connect it to my desktop and open it...it still shows all the old folders. ALL of them, pics, app folders, CWM folders. everything. WTF? How do I wipe this mofo clean so I can return it? It's been a week now and I need to send it back TODAY.
Thanks guys...
K

OK I did factory reset from inside settings, not recovery, and that seems to have done it. I checked "myfiles" folder and Kies and nothing shows, and USB'd to desktop shows empty.
Sorry if I wasted anyone's time.
Do I need to wade thru the counter reset nowadays, or can I ship this thing?
It's going back thru warranty, for "no sim card" errors.

Factory reset from recovery doesn't erase internal memory, or sd card. You have to manually select wipe internal storage, and manually select wipe sdcard or emmc. Apparently doing it from the phones settings does! I didn't know that so thanks for teaching me something!

Boot your phone into download mode and see what the flash counter says for curiosity. If your sending it back to the factory for warranty replacement it's not a bad idea to do the flash counter reset trick. It can't hurt!

The flash counter reset is flashing a boatloader... yes it can hurt, if something goes awry while that's written it's a bricked device.
Granted he's returning it... but there are risks in that flash.

Yah, I've read that elsewhere. I'm going to return it like it is now...and raise bloody hell if they try and charge me $500 for a broken device that's under warranty.
If I remember...I'll report back here if it goes thru w/o problems.
Thanks for the help gents

Phone will not wipe, format, flash with Odin, etc.

I know my way around Android phones, Odin, etc. I've had a few of the original GS variations and never encountered anything like this.
It is an i9100, early batch GSII (Made in Korea) and is not rooted. This thing will not save any changes, whether it's deleting an app, flashing in Odin, using the Factory Format, etc. I am just perplexed.
I purchased this phone used from an online retailer at a great price, with a refund only policy. I figured no matter what there's always a solution as long as the bootloader, recovery mode and download mode are accessible. It seems I was mistaken.
Basically, all of the previous owner's information is on the phone. I can't do a factory reset through Android's menu since it prompts for the password of the original owner. Okay, fine, so I went into recovery mode and did a factory data reset then a wipe of the cache. Phone boots back up like nothing happened.
I've also tried the "Factory Format" dialer code with the same result. Any attempt at Odin flashing, whether it's a regular TAR or the 3 piece deal also do nothing. Odin will say it passed on every attempt, but nothing changes. All of the apps, personal info, etc are still there untouched.
After hours of trying to find a solution and getting nothing helpful, I even ticked the Re-Partition option, as well as the Phone EFS Clear in Odin. This also did nothing. The IMEI did not change or become corrupted as I expected.
Download mode shows that the Custom Binary Download is no. From what I understand, stock ROMs should still flash regardless of the counter's status. All I've tried to flash are stock ROMs, to no avail.
I'd love to get this thing working instead of sending it back for a refund. They won't offer an exchange as they are not receiving any more GS II.
Any ideas? I appreciate any and all responses, thanks.
I would remove ext sd card .
Go to recovery mounts and storage
Format cache data system and sd card .
Phone should now be empty remove battery and replace then boot to download mode and flash stock rom via Odin .

I haven't had an SD card in this phone at all. I've already tried those steps as well, and it did not help. This is just so strange.
I think your biggest problem is to do with the old password. I know from the S1 days that factory reset and other measures will not work if you don't know the password/pattern lock etc. Only Odin 3 part file + pit + repartition cleaned it up.
When you say you ticked repartition, did you have the pit file also? If not ticking repartition will not do anything I think. Very possible that all the files you flashed were no-wipe versions as well.
So maybe try this. Not sure if you've seen one of those firmwares which has a whole load of files in the zip like code (PDA), a couple of csc's, efs and more. They also have a pit file. Maybe try one of those firmwares. I use kh3 which I got of samfirmware.com a few months back when I want to clean **** up. I think I read somewhere that the new kk5 also.has them.
I know alot of people will say 'don't use pit or repartition' but I think you've got nothing to lose.

I appreciate the detailed reply, but that was the second to last thing I tried. I did use the pit, however I'm not sure if the package I used was a no wipe version. I used KF1, it was 3 files and I selected the pit, didn't work. I'll give KH3 a shot and report back in a bit, thanks
No go on KH3 either, this is one phone that does not want to be wiped
Is it just me or does your phone sound like a zombie?

Man your phone does sound weird. Maybe the s2 has some other sort of security measure related to that password. I think I did read a thread once about someone who had a similar problem. Not sure but it might have been a hardware issue.
Maybe rooting it will help but doubt it. Anyway, try an Odin flashable kernal like cf root or speedmod or even a custom firmware like litepro. Litepro flashes in Odin. If you can get cwm recovery maybe a wipe custom rom might do something.

[Q] Galaxy S2 Won't factory reset

Hi,
I am having some issues with my SGS2 and wondered if anyone had any suggestions before i send it back for repair. It is a stock sim free UK model, not rooted. There is no SD card installed just the internal 16gbyte flash.
I was noticing more force closes on apps than normal so i decided to reboot the phone. I then noticed that my recent text messages had disappeared back to the 19th Jan. So after sending some more i rebooted the phone again and they had gone..I then deleted all the text messages and sent some more, rebooted the phone and the old ones were back and the new ones had gone back to the same date.
I thought i would then just factory reset the phone and start over again. However it won't factory reset. It goes through the motions and sends me to the bootloader screen where i wipe data and clear cache. However still it refuses to delete the stuff on the phone or factory reset it!
Things i have tried..
-Factory reset both with security menu and keypad sequence
-Reset by going to bootloader from cold boot and wiping data and cache
-Mouting it as a usb flash drive in use developer mode and formatting the drive through windows (even this doesn't get rid of the photos on the flash drive)
-reflashing the default firmware with odin
Basically i cannot do anything to the phone to make it reset or delete any of the things on it. I can go into the gallery and delete all the photos but as soon as you reboot they are all back!
I don't want to root the phone to try and solve the problem as it may need to go back but as an engineer it is frustrating being beaten by a phone, so i wanted to see if i could get any advice from here.
Thanks in advance.
First factory reset/data wipe does not delete anything on your internal sd card (12gb storage). It only clears the internal storage. So all your apps and settings are gone. With a reboot after the wipe the cache of the apps well be rebuilt.
So your photos well not be deleted. Try connecting the phone to your pc again and just open the sd card folder and go to DCIM and delete your photos.
the thing with your SMS is weird. Try to disable the back up option in the settings which backs up your settings on the Samsung servers.and then do some factory tests again.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
Thanks for the feedback.
I have deleted the DCIM folder and others on the sdcard when connected to a PC. The photos disappear on the phone, but as soon as i reboot the phone they are all back.
I have even formatted (full not quick) with windows and minitool partition wizard..which "appears" as if the drive is blank however rebooting the phone everything comes back to how it was. I simply cannot delete anything off the phone.
I disabled the backup and the same issue with the text messages is still there. In fact when the phone was rebooted the tick box to set the backup had been reticked. I have tried this twice now.
I can install applications and use them no problem but as soon as i reboot they disappear as if they were never installed.
The phone is just stuck on the 19th Jan 2012 and nothing i do seems to convince it otherwise!
Hey mate,
the "factory reset" is not the same like u want to have.
That for u have to go in CWM (recovery) and then to "mount and storage":
here u can format all u want (system, data, cache, sd card, ext sd...)
BUT CAREFULLY!!! If u have done it's away!
This also means no Rom flashing from sd card because u delete it, too...
... so u must flash VIA ODIN a new firmware or Rom.
Hope this helps.
CHEERS
Thanks for the reply.
Correct me if i am wrong, but i would need to root to install CWM? I don't want to root at the moment as i may have to send it back to Samsung.
I can't think of the failure mode where by a factory reset wouldn't clear all the applications/settings and return the phone to factory default unless it couldn't write to the internal flash memory.
When i ask it to factory reset i tell it i want the USB formatted too..it doesn't do either of the things.
It is as if the entire phones internal memory as write protected on the 19th Jan and it cannot write to its own flash memory.
Taking a picture for example shows in the gallery after taking it, but then rebooting the phone make it disappear.
I don't know enough about android/linux to say if it is a software or hardware fault at the moment.

Oh OK sorry.. Yeah u had to do root for CWM.
Hmm listen a bit strange...
So if u want wo delete all I can, then:
1) Delete all folders I can from phone
2) After this the factory reset via secret code (Google it by urself pls... Can't do it atm)
It's something like *#number#* which u just type in phone.
Hope this helps.
If not much success anyway!

This sounds a lot like the eMMC corruption you can get on an S-OFF HTC phone if you carelessly take the battery out.. I've had one of those and it behaved just like that, can't flash or delete anything from it, installing market apps work but they're gone after a reboot, etc).
Doesn't sound good, I'd get it replaced while it's still unrooted if I was you

2. Download mode
not the USB jig..
My details: Samsung Galaxy S2 GT-I9100
I have used odbin and reflashed, all completed successfully without issues. I have superuser installed. I have installed ROM manager, but nothing in there works e.g I tried using the backup current rom option and the phone rebooted into recovery mode (stock) and when phone rebooted, all settings and data reverted back. All new apps i installed disappeared..
Let me know if you need additoinal info.

Not sure what you are doing with Rom Manager .
Remove it
Use CWM backup and recovery via a rooted CWM kernel is what most use Plus Titanium backup pro for apps .

This is the file I downloaded from the thread and used with odbins:
CF-Root-SGS2_XW_LUX_KJ1-v5.0-CWM5.zip
Everything ran fine as per my attached images.
I then went through the phone and did a Factory Restore: Settings > Privacy > Factory Data reset
When the phone rebooted, I did see something different for the first time. The yellow triangle. I simply restart the phone again and no triangle this time. The phone booted back up as normal and all data and settings back again.
My objectivse are simple:
1. I want to completly wipe the phone and start from scratch.
Eveytime time my phone reboots and loose all new apps and new data e.g. text messages, emails. phone number. It seems to be stuck on a version and eveytime phone reboots it goes back to that point in time. It's a real pain.
2. I want to upgrade to ICS

Hi there,
I never managed to fix it. I still have it sitting on my desk. In the end I had to buy a cheap phone untill I get some time to sort out my issue with the S2.
if you get anywhere with it, please let me know.
I was reading the Titanium Backup General KB about Nand Lock and what caught me is this statement:
"Sometimes you get the illusion that you can write to /system, but in any case all changes will disappear after a reboot"
I'm no expert but that does sounds like the symptom you (we) are having with the s2. I'm going into that direction to unlock the bootloader.
We'll see how it goes.

[Q] Verizon S4 won't boot to system

Hello, I need help figuring out a way to get my phone to boot back to system.
I was flashing a new ROM, something I've done multiple times on my phone, and for some reason when I wanted to reboot to system another pop up appeared saying "your device does not appear to be rooted. install SuperSU now?" with two options (do not install or install) no matter which option I pick, my phone goes into download mode. I can go back into recovery but can't do much since I don't have any back ups saved.
(Because of my phone's storage problem I saved the back ups to my computer)
I would try rooting my phone again with odin but I don't want to risk actually bricking my phone and making this problem worse.
Help, please!
Yes, I've searched through every thread I could to find a solution but I can't find anything that's even similar to my problem.

There are plenty of no wipe odin packages Hey one and go back to stock re root and try again sounds like you got a bad download. But I would highly recommend making a back up to your phone because you do have an external SD card to backup to also. So you can't say anything about the storage problem. unless you don't own a external card that is. Our you could try to factory reset in recovery then reboot if that didn't work... odin can't really go wrong with odin

[Q]flashing back to stock firmware with odin. And [Q] about resetting phone.

Wanna go back to stock after being a rom junkie, having never used odin, and wanting to go back. Will flashing the stock firmware with odin get me a yellow triangle? Until now i've been able to completely avoid the triangle, it would be ironic if i got it going back to stock.
Also after flashing a ton of roms i have soooo much junk on my phone its not even funny and i need the space back, is the safest way to COMPLETELY wipe my phone(i mean everything pics, music, junk files and such) through the setting menu > backup and reset > factory data reset > tick Erase SD card box > reset phone. ?
Any help is much appreciated.
OK....first....you don't *need* to Odin flash to get back to stock if you are rooted...... @Chainfires mobile Odin will let you do it 'in phone'
Search for the thread here on XDA read ALL the instructions and flash away.
Second......I've used mobile Odin a few times, and it's NEVER increased my binary count or produced a yellow triangle.
Third......in mobile Odin there are options to wipe dalvik, cache and data.....you don't need to do any extra wipes before flashing.
PC Odin, (I believe) will leave your *personal* data intact unless you find a "3 part firmware" that format wipes the memory as it flashes........
The normal single part firmwares just overwrite the pre existing files and leave everything else untouched.......
This might be my S2 or it might be my W, but it's definitely CM...
awesome big thanks for the help, will def give mob odin a go.
What about wiping all personal data from my phone, i mean everything like junk files, photo's, video, the countless files left over from deleted apps can i just use the built in factory reset and data wipe(through the setting menu > backup and reset > factory data reset > tick Erase SD card box > reset phone)?
Again big thanks for the help.
I've never actually used the factory reset in the phones settings.....I've always gone to CWM recovery mode to do it, so I'm not sure how thorough it is......
Sorry, can't answer that one.......

You can just format your external sd card, and for the internal one you can simply delete everything in there manually or use the clear sd data in settings too before flashing stock rom. I haven't used mobile odin because it seemed weird to me, and i've never had a triangle flashing from odin (pc), i think it will be okay if you follow instructions, just check posts in the thread of using odin, if it makes a triangle someone would be posting it.

Yea, not having such a good experience with MOdin so far lol, once i get a definitive answer(which i think i just got, thx) to: "if pc odin will produce a triangle or not when flashing back to stock?" ill be using that.
Thanks

Broken screen. How to factory reset.

Been trying to solve this for awhile now with maybe luck.
I can:
-Connect phone to Pc using USB.
I can't or don't know:
-Software that will let me see what my phone screen is doing. Everything that I have found needs the app on the phone.
-Factory reset other than devices on my google page. Ring phone doesn't work so I have doubts that the reset worked. Might have but would like to confirm it.
Has to be a solution without destroying the phone. AS I have insurance to replace it. I just want it wiped before I do.
Thank You
There is an option I know but it will kill the phone.
Download stock ROM or any flashable recovery and tick option "Nand Erase All" in odin.

Thanks but I'd rather not destroy it. May void my insurance if it looks or seems deliberate. That said, I think that I might have Stumbled my way to erasing everything on it. Either blindly trying to use the reset function. Or the Google device manager in Google+ actually worked. I see all my phone storage is now free. Photo's are gone ect. I didn't delete anything manually.
