[Q] Updating Evo - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

So ill start by saying I've been scouring the internet all night and I'm confused as hell. I have had the Evo LTE since day one, rooted it the same day and have not updated it since. I am on S-On, 1.13.651.1, hboot 1.12 and have twrp 2.3.1.0. I want to update to the latest version, radios and everything, what is the best way to do this without bricking my phone and keeping root? The stock rom is fine for me I just need root.

First of all you have missed a couple firmware updates, but since you are s-on you need to update using a RUU head to vipeRuu thread and follow the script instructions, then unlock again using htc dev, install twrp and then flash supersu and busy box, you will be s-on, unlocked and rooted on stock. Navigation doesn't work on some jelly bean roms on some phones, it just crashes, no fix as of today, use telenav, waze or scout. Good luck!

I would suggest using FacePalm to get your phone S-OFF
Then you can update your firmware/radios
There is no need to run an RUU unless you need to go back to stock reason being you don't really want to update your hboot
Any questions shoot me a PM

yes you can root with out s-off but why not S-off of the ability is out there? S-off gives you unbridled access to your system for better of worse. Though you may be S-off you don't have to use it, but if you need it and don't have it then your screwed. Then you have to go through the entire process all over again. It's better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. This thread is a perfect example. He wants to upgrade his radio not impossible with s-on but far more difficult. When I updated my radio I just flashed the .zip file like a rom. No need to rename files place them In the root directory yada yada yada. Just my opinion.

By the way I'm not bagging you over it. Simply saying the phone came out in June last year S-off has been available since July the same year. A year later there are three versions that do the same thing. Good on you for realizing s-off needed to be obtained. Once you are s-off there is nothing that will keep you from truly manipulating your phone any way you desire.

Yeah, i rooted the phone the day i got it, the only thing available at the time was s-on. Phone was/is running great, but i noticed i'm 4 updates behind and i have started seeing 4g in my area so i though it would be a good time to update the radios. Thanks for the suggestions guys, i got s-off now and going to try to update later.

Back to GB from ICS Leak?

Hello all,
I'm a bit new with the Rezound, I was pretty experienced with the DInc2 and DInc before it, but I'm wondering something, I've looked around a bit, so apologies if I missed a thread, but I haven't found a straight up direct answer.
I have the latest ICS leak installed on my phone, I haven't rooted or s-off'd the phone just yet.... so what I need to know is:
1. Do I need to be S-OFF to flash the GB RUU so I can get the OTA when it releases?
OR
2. Will the phone still pick up the OTA with the leaked version of ICS since the leak is still an "official" build etc.
Hello, i'm also looking for same info, only i'm like a super noobie, I have an RUU, INSTALLED the HTC sync, which failed saying "waiting for boot loader" and that's all she wrote. So I think I need to do something to the boot loader, only what i'm not too sure.
Thanks.

Good question, not new to htc, I came from the tbolt, but if I run the latest ruu as a .img file through hboot, how would I get back to the stock gb rom that's currently on my rez, or will I be able to accept the ota while on the leak?
from my knowledge you will be able to ota to the release as long as it is a higher version that what the current leak is.
and if that fails you could s-off then gb ruu and then ota up.
I would like to go back to a nandroid backup of GB ROM that I had before I updated my firmware to the latest ICS leak. I can get it to restore & boot up, but I have no access to my sd card, so I have none of my apps. I feel like I've tried everything - nandroid helper, old firmware fix - but I don't know what to do next. Any suggestions?
In my trials to go back to a ginger bread RUU based firm ware, the process gets stuck at waiting on the boot loader, the phone is apparently not recognized. It is also not seen by the HTC sync.
the boot loader has been locked I don't know what to do next. It doesn't appear I can flash anything from fast boot menu.
Thanks for reading this far.

Hello and thanks for your time looking into this.
I am on ICS Leak - and need to go back to GB - the thing is good but the battery is atrocious and it heats like anything.
So I went ahead and put the thing in boot loader and then ran the RUU after exiting the HTC sync. Now I am getting Error 140 - Boot loader version Error.
Ah the pain this phone is causing
I have one more question: Do I have to do this every time I want to go back to a previous backup (one that I did prior to updating to the ICS firmware)? If so, I'm wondering if it wouldn't just be easier to go back to GB firmware......
Ver Change for Error 140 - Android SDK CMD???
According to my research - I need to down the version using hex editor via ADB Shell. Dear God !
I have tried / installed SDK/ and Java Dev Kit. No Go - is there an app I can do this on the phone itself?
Thanks

Given I cannot downgrade back from HBoot 2.25.0000 is it not simpler to wait for the next RUU - whatever that is may over write this one?

You will need s-off to revert but as of hboot 2.25 it doesnt accept flashboot commands. Kinda stuck til a patched hboot gets released if you took the 5/7 leak.

Thanks for looking into this - so my option is to wait for a patched hboot 2.25 or wait for another RUU with an Hboot higher than 2.25.
I was wondering if I could install CWM recovery - and just flash myself an GB ROM. My issues with this ROM are overheating and battery chomping. I wonder if that will be helped with a GB ROM - supposedly more mature and efficient. If this can be done can you point me to a thread?

Lost root after the last update from htc

Lost root with the latest update from htc that fixed Google Wallet. Anyone else?

You never accept an update If you are rooted or ever plan to root.
You cannot gain s-off with the newest update, but can still do HTC dev
Sent from my EVO using Tapatalk 2
Thankfully, with HTC Dev, we'll pretty much always have the option of rooting regardless of update.
Yes, but I believe with the new hboot 1.15 there's no more flashing kernals, radios, or splash screens........ouch

Radios and splash screens.. oh well. Not a big deal.
And kernels.. well, my views on kernels aren't popular so I will keep them to myself.
I really dont care to have S-OFF. I just want root access for tethering. I had the Old Evo 4G and I spent hours and days flashing roms and it was addictive! I just dont want to teak this LTE. To me ICS is working fine and I dont want to be hooked again of flashing, Nand backups and such.
I just want a safe way to re gain root, for Tethering. again I dont care about Bootloader or S-OFF.
Any input will be appreciated.
I made a topic on why you root and it got closed.. same reasoning I'm hearing about is why I wanted people to fully be aware this isn't the evo og and rooting could be bad this time

Question guys, you can use HTC Dev for the Evo but you won't get S-OFF, what does that mean.
Can I still flash Radios, Modems, and can I tweak with msl reader like the old EVO.
Also has anyone found a root method post Google Wallet Update from July 11th. I decided to update because I was not rooted yet, but now I want to root.
Aw man, I'm a new member at xda, just got on the forums when I got my EVO LTE. I've been trying to lurk and read up but unfortunately never came across somebody saying I shouldn't accept OTAs... I was gonna wait until cm9 or aokp got a bit more stable to root and flash. What have I lost the ability to do by accepting this update?
Edit: nevermind, looks like I'll have to wait until root methods are updated, and possibly wait for another s-off exploit if if comes. Can't flash radios or kernels... Damn...

I'd imagine that it won't be long before someone comes out with an updated root method. Be patient, read and ask questions in the meantime.
If you are S-ON and rooted then you update with the new OTA can you still root the phone again?
I was rooted only and accepted the update. No longer have root access. I saved w voodoo root keeper, but it couldn't restore root after update. Figured that would happen just wanted to try it.
Also after the update, my clock speed only throttles down to 1ghz. Anyone else noticing this? Talk about a battery killer!
Sent from my EVO using xda app-developers app
Edit: Scratch that 1ghz thing. Think maybe my widget was freaking out. Seems to be fine now. I was pissed at first too!
First rule of XDA is you don't accept OTA updates for any reason.
Just my 2 cents...I made the mistake with my OG EVO and had to wait for unrEVOked to be updated.

Is it possible to use someone else backup 1.31 the previous build when being rooted. I want revert back to the previous build. I'm on the latest update. The reason why i ask this is I want to go back to stock using Ruu.
Sent from my EVO using xda premium
Here man....it's a super quick process. Just copied and pasted from another thread....
I took the OTA and I'm rooted again.... It's not even that difficult.
I wanted google wallet and I wanted it bad! So I ran thru the hastle of hacking Google wallet so I could get into settings and clear it. Then HTC re-locked my phone. Ran the RUU, then accepted the OTA.
After you've updated...
Run the HTC unlock. Instructions at HTCdev website.
Then flash TWRP (I used adb fastboot method):
http://teamw.in/project/twrp2/98
Once that's installed you can flash supersu via this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1538053
Find: CWM installable ZIP in the OPs sig block (it works fine with TWRP on 1.22 software)
From there I just installed busybox (by Stepen) via the market. Grabbed Titanium Backup, and here I am. Rooted phone with 1.22 stock ROM.
Not all of the old mods work anymore though. My favorite, which was the battery mods, don't work. They don't even come close to working, so make sure you nandroid backup before you start tinkering..
I'm rooted but my phone is acting weird after using the HTC unlock method with the latest update

Meanbean question

Question.
I just came from mean ics and loved it and now I'm mean bean and absolutely love this too. (And thank you fit sure) Will any of the options from the folder (4x5, OC, or more) work in mean bean? If not is an OC or roxie coming? And if I'm late to that party can anyone tell me how and where?
You all rock! Thanks

The old ones will likely not work, but you're welcome to try. You'll likely bootloop, if you're not sure how to fix a bootloop I wouldn't venture that way. All the mods will come, but they have to be ported to the new base. Relax and give the devs some time, it's only been two days.
Trust me, I'm patient.. I can wait for a while if needed. And since these smart people (unlike me) that can do things like this so well I was just curious...
For avoiding bootloop I'm not sure at if that's what I'll get but I'll try later when I get home since I don't want to screw up my phone while at work.. Especially how restricted my internet sites are..
Thanks for the quick and informative response, I never am disappointed !

I would suggest s-off dirty racoon style. Then flash your radios through bootloader. When the jb base came out I was s-on and decided it would be smart for me to future proof so I took the plunge. Follow the instructions for dirty racoon step by step and you should be okay. I've also read somewhere that s-on users who have taken the ota update to jb and then unlocked bootloader through htc have been having some issues getting radio and other firmware to stick after flashing through bootloader. It made sense to me to s-off. Pretty painless if you follow the directions. Hope this helps you out but to each his own.

I am guessing it is for Tmobile?
I have that same version.
It disables revone or moonshine for working so essentially s-off.
I was able to still unlock the bootloader via HTCDev and root using TWRP and SuperSU.
Not really sure what s-off does, since I am able to load custom roms and etc. with current setup anyways....

S-off lets us convert to the full GPE version and get ota. I hope devs find a way of getting s-off on 531.11

I am guessing it is for Tmobile?
I have that same version.
It disables revone or moonshine for working so essentially s-off.
I was able to still unlock the bootloader via HTCDev and root using TWRP and SuperSU.

s-off is security check off. it stops the bootloader from checking for signatures pretty much letting you flash Whatever aslong as the recovery accepts it. can also turn off the recoveries signature check but thats alot easier to do as the recovery alows you to do so freely.
And anyone wouldnt happen to know more info on this would they. as ive noticed sense i did the manual OTA update via HTC's site, regaining s-off is proving to be imensley didficult. "i s-on'd whiel debugging things and regret it lol"
From what I have been able to gather the updated 1.44 or 1.54 cannot be s-offed using revone or moonshine currently.
I'm pretty happy right now, all I care about is GPe 4.3 anyways. Running of 4.3 ROM, firmware, and radio with just unlocked boot loader

4.3 JB ruu will NOT save you after you upgrade hboot

Edited for accuracy:
For those happy folks finally moving to 4.4.2 (Verizon and Sprint most recently) please keep in mind that we do NOT yet have an ruu for 4.4.2. If you are S-ON you will NOT be able to save yourself using any 4.3 ruu if you have updated your hboot. Keep in mind an hboot can be flashed without any other part of an update so make sure you know what you are doing and what you have done to your device.
Just a public service announcement to hopefully bring people back to reality before they go modding their new 4.4.2 goodness.
Can't 4.4's hboot replace itself with the RUU's hboot,
(like usual 2 pass RUU install)?
Or did you mean for S-ON devices?
Im sure some magic can be worked for those that are s-off and can flash non encrypted. S-on folks definitely have to watch out. Overall its just best that people think before they play.

Aren't the s-off'ed and unlocked devices able to use their respective RUU's to downgrade? Example like myself I wen't from 1.11.605.4 official to the new 2.16.605.2 that if I ran in to a problem I could do the 0P3PIMG.zip from SD method or do the fastboot oem rebootRUU with the vzw.t6.0P3PIMG_1.11.605.4.zip and I was under the impression we could downgrade or upgrade as we see fit so long as we are s-off??? Isn't that how it's always been? I thought s-on users only really had to be careful since they could only upgrade due to main version issue and also not having a KitKat RUU now available if they took the update while s-on.... Some clarity would be great! Honestly though I thought the way I just worded it is how it's always been with HTC devices...

ALL of this discussion is why I started this thread!
It is important we get to the complete truth. IMO my OP stands valid until we have confirmation otherwise.

Last night, @waco2hot33 ran the RUU and went s-on to take the OTA...and was able to regain s-off, root, and unlocked via WeakSauce/firewater s-off...Here's how he did it
But, once you're back to s-off, and have root, no matter what hboot you have, you can run the commands from @scotty1223's thread found HERE to unlock the new hboot
End of discussion?
Yeah that's incorrect hehe... For s-on users that stands true... They need to be extremely careful until something becomes available, but speaking for the Verizon users that took the OTA and are s-off... Unlocked is NOT necessary, just as long as they are s-off they can actually downgrade back to stock 4.3 for whatever the reason may be.. i.e.: warranty, bad flash, etc etc... It's 100% always been this way for all HTC devices that are s-off... It's by far the greatest feature or perk of having an HTC device... If you don't believe me then grab the encrypted vzw.t6_1.11.605.4 RUU and run it, you will see you will have no issues downgrading. While s-on users if they attempted they would get the main version to low error, s-off bypasses that...

Please read my post above yours. Waco went s-on, took the update and installed it, and was able to regain s-off via the link i posted above. Therefore, one COULD root the newest update whether they are s-on or s-off.
I did something similar but why did he s-on?? Def didn't have to do that... I got the OTA and it failed 2 times so I said F it and ran the encrypted RUU just to get back to a complete stock state in case it was a boot.img or something missing issue and I remained "s-off" and "unlocked", redownloaded the OTA after booting back up and the OTA then flashed perfectly fine with booting in to KitKat and still s-off and unlocked. Only thing I had to do was fastboot TWRP back and flashed the SuperSU v1.94 and I was straight!
Did he think he needed to be s-on to take the OTA?

Noob moment? Tired? Acid flashback? Your guess is as good as mine, but he went s-on and was able to regain s-off via WeakSauce temp-root and firewater s-off with newest OTA/firmware. So...success? lol
I got what you are saying.. You are stating it is possible to root unlock and s-off official KitKat but what Jiggity Janx created the OP for was saying to everyone to be careful in case they soft bricked hard bricked boot looped or what have you that when on official KitKat there phone may be rendered unusable because there is no KitKat RUU.... What good is a rooted phone if you can't boot it? I was stating that if you are s-off and can at least boot to hboot that you are 100% safe and can run the Jelly Bean RUU....

But yes that is indeed good to know though, thanks for the info! Good to know s-on or off we can work with KitKat!
Verdict.....s-off allows full downgrade of everything via ruu. Firmware and hboot. Just tested myself.

I understand and agree, but if you're s-on, the likelyhood of you bricking your device is nearly null. If you're s-off, you could likely use the 4.3 RUU and downgrade your hboot (i did this yesterday during a brain lapse after taking/applying the update).
So if you're looking if being s-off allows you to downgrade your hboot, then the answer is yes.

OP and or title should be corrected so it is not misleading to some looking for answers... Maybe I'll make a thread for users as reference for all the variants
I think the intent of the op was really meant for the users who are currently s-on and running KitKat. If they run into issues they likely won't be able to root and s-off and will be screwed as there currently isn't public KitKat ruu available.
Good discussion. Please don't discuss the intent of the thread anymore.

IMO if you can root it you can f it up. So s-on users do have some risk and currently there is no fix for them on 4.4.2 where there was a fix for them on 4.3 (encrypted ruu).
Good to see that soff users should be good to use a lower version ruu to downgrade if needed.
I have updated and downgraded to the stock version OS and hboot. But I'm also S Off. I had to use the decrypted RUU file though....
