[Q] I9300 US Modem - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Let me start out by saying this is not a 'what is best modem' thread. I have done a lot of research and I thought maybe other XDA members' input would help. I have an international galaxy S3, using it with Tmobile. I know you guys say I will only be getting 2g/Edge. But I live in the DC area, so am getting constant H/H+ speeds. Anyway, I have been getting a lot of draining from my phone's radio and I was wondering if there were any Tmobile users who have previously flashed any modems and which ones would work with T-mobile in the US? Thanks in advance guys.

You mention this is not a "best modem" thread. Ok fair enough, but you obviously put that because you know they are not received well. I just wanted to go into why that is which may also (unfortunately) put a dampener on what you are hoping to achieve in this thread.
Please note, I am trying to help here. I'm not trying to nit pick.
Anyway, I digress.
I could be you next door neighbour and have the same phone as you on T-Mobile. I could say radio x is best. Even though you are only next door, this could be the worst for you. There are so many variables that go into it that you simply can never have a simple answer.
It may be radio x is best for me because it's bouncing signals off the tin roof of my garage (that you can't see) better than radio y. The building I work in may be brick walled and yours concrete. I may be in locations where you may not be during the day. I may have a different rom. Different radio interface layer. Different apps and configurations... it all goes towards a completely different experience.
Then t-mobile is massive. Not just on your street. Different people, different masts, different terrain, different altitudes...
Anyone who gives advice to you here, they may say radio x is better. If it is, its coincidence. Really all you can do is try them all and see whats best for you.
Again, I'm not getting at you. I just wanted to give you some insight so don't be too disappointed if you don't get the results you hope from this thread

Really appreciate the answers/details man. I know you are just trying to help and it's nice that you were polite. I understand that there is no 'best modem', but I was wondering if there was any specific modem to work with I9300 in Tmobile US, that's all. I bought my phone unlocked from France, and it's been draining my battery a bit. So, wondering if any given radio will work here in the US, dont want to run into problems. But thanks man, I appreciate your response!

Its literally just a case of trying them all. My carrier specific (3 uk) modem is actually the worst for me than any other.

i got 3 uk as well. i had to flash the 3 uk modem since the rom i flashed came with a different modem. So Im guessing you have the NELK2 modem flashed on your as well or a different one? Sometimes my phone has 2 signal bars but says 3 service not available with the triangle and exclamation point. Whats a fix for that or is that normal?
i found modems here if this helps you OP:

I always use the latest modem unless I find it to be bad. You'll get that triangle if there's no service

T-MOBILE note users...information needed !!!

T-mobile note users ....
I'm posting this thread as a request for information today.....let me explain.
Within the past few weeks, many members have reported sim card errors on their tmo devices after root and flash of custom roms.
I personally know about 5 devices within the week that have suffered this failure.....3 of which, have been recovered by downgrading to Gingerbread .....
I'm sure there are many more sim issues we haven't heard about, as they likely haven't posted.
My intent here, is to have as many tmo users as possible, post your flash success or failure, in an attempt to prevent more sim failure issues.
Although I'm an ATT note user, I'm willing to help monitor and collect data here, so future users won't suffer the same fate.
2 of these failed devices were sent for repair, even though they were only days old, and worked perfectly prior to root and flash.
So please, if you are using the T-mobile network........please post your history and results.
Together we will likely find the cause .
And perhaps generate enough attention to the issues, that a fix can be found...
I am not attempting to cause panic, but I feel we need to fix the problem now, before we have dozens of affected units, rather than just a few.
Many thanks in advance ....g
Bump
I would mention that many t-mobile subscribers cannot get good data and voice while using the at&t version of the note. With the choice of an at&t and a t-mobile model, you should get the t-mobile model -- you will be happier in the long run.
Happy T-mobile user

I bought an AT&T note off craigslist about a month ago. It was unlocked, before I handed over the cash I put my T-mobile sim in and called a friend he said it sounded great so I bought it. I did a couple of speed tests with it and usually get between 3 and 6 mbps down and a lot slower up. I've had no problems, everything works great including GPS. It's running ICS 4.04 stock AT&T ROM and the baseband is unknown. I don't know who unlocked and set it up but they did a great job as far as I'm concerned. YMMV
off-topic, deleted.
It's all good ranger ....
Any and all info on the T-Mobile network while using the ATT note is welcome ....even the success stories.
I did request both in the OP, as I feel that we need both sides of the user responses to nail this thing down.
I do appreciate your response, and ask you for any assistance you can provide here.
This problem is so odd .....as it's not a brick ....but yet it is ....g
I sold my note to a TMo user...called them today(two days after) and they said it was working amazing....it was rooted and unlocked by an amazingly awesome person though(haha jkjk). The guy never rooted before and said the speed tests were rocking his gfs GS3 in TMo and the clarity of the call was great as well....ait could be a root issue or ROM issue though...
As far as unlocking if the pgones unlocked any way except for calling ATT customer care there is always that risk...plus a three minute phone call and giving someone your imei shouldnt be too much hassle .. So theres that dudes exoeruence from someone that knows what they are doing(kind of)...
The rom I left him on was AOCP CP3 by the collective jsyk

noting the unlock method here.....
I believe you are right.....We have many service unlock options, but only one that is safe....and thats the carrier method...
could this be as simple as users not unlocking the sim prior to root and flash ??? or an improper unlock ???
I'm hoping we can get some users in here to clarify that possibility for us.
Many thanks for bringing that up....g
Thank you Rob....
I appreciate the reply, and I'm glad your device is working as it should...
Several others are not so lucky....g

Users on the T-Mobile network, are losing the ability too see or access the sim card, after rooting and flashing the device with a custom rom.
Generally they are flashing ICS, but we also have some users reporting sim loss while using GB roms as well.
We know a few things that are leading to a possible cause.
The first is the carrier offset (my term for t-mobile users with an ATT device )
The second is the need for carrier unlock for the device to be used at all with t-mobile.
The third is the inability to restore "any " sim activity after the failure....(although a few users have been successful after a complete unroot and downgrade to GB .
Although I haven't yet found a pattern in this ....I have reason to believe we are seeing a carrier related lockout of some kind, as the sim functions fine in other devices, and the device functions normally minus it's ability to detect the sim or any network.
Perhaps a good next step, would be to re-lock the device to the carrier again, after a complete stock restore of the device.
I wish that we had an affected device to try this with, but unfortunately, the affected users are returning the device for repair or replacement.
Not all users will, as they need a working device immediately, and are trying desperately to restore functionality.
That being said, I'm hoping this thread will draw an affected user here, so we can explore more aggressive, and hopefully effective solutions.
I can't ask anyone to risk a device beyond their willingness to try, and with some proactive thoughts from our fantastic user base, we will crack this problem open, and create a fix.
We all know the risks involved in flashing firmware images, but since we are now crossing not only the root/flash barrier, we are adding the carrier change into the mix. And that brings it's own unique set of challenges to the table.
I sincerely appreciate any and all help, in my search to help our note users succeed in fixing the ghost in this machine ....g
I know this is a noob question but I've been reading all these t-mo service/I717 threads cuz I'm thinking of doing this. Does rooting the phone unlock it? I'm on the liquid jb rom.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda app-developers app
I would like to echo what rangercaptain said earlier in the thread, regarding the fact that the SGH-I717 was never designed to run on the T-Mobile network.
And although we have virtually identical hardware and operational features, clearly something is different enough to cause this issue.
And I "do not " believe it is user error.
In the meantime, I would advise any user thinking about converting the ATT note to use on the T-Mobile network, to think very hard before attempting to do so......at least, until a verified and working solution can be found.
Ultimately, we need a bone stock ATT note, and a t-mobile user brave enough to try the process repeatedly, until the cause is identified, by eliminating one process at a time ...g

Rooting a device simply gives it's user the administrator rights needed to access the protected system and data sections of the device, that are normally reserved to the factory, carrier, and programming engineers of the software.
It does nothing to unlock you from your carrier.
That is done by contacting the carrier, and requesting that service.
It is also possible to be unlocked by a third party, but clearly their are risks involved in doing so while using the ATT note on the t-mobile network.
We are working very hard to correct the current "no sim card present" issue ...g

I have been running the AT&T i717 note on the T-Mo network since Tomin figured out how to get the 4g working, many months ago. I have not had problems with voice quality or sim card issues. I have run the Saurom GB roms, Goldie's Only1, many ICS roms, and now am on the stock T-Mo rom with the Blaze ICS modem.Tried all the modems, and Blaze works best for me. YMMV. I got a new sim from T-Mo to enable wifi calling. My data averages 3-5 megs, upload 1-1.8 megs, but at work I regularly hit 14 meg download. But like everyone, the speed is erratic, but functional for everything I do, including streaming netflix. My speeds were faster and more consistant with the GB roms, but the ICS speeds are plenty fast. I unlocked my phone with cellunlocker.com I think was the service. Nothing but a success story with my AT&T note on T-Mobile. And I get to keep my unlimited, unthrottled $5.99/month grandfathered data plan with 4g (if I used a "known" to T-Mo 4g phone I would have to upgrade. The AT&T note is "unknown" to T-Mo, If I got the T-Mo note it would trigger new data charges). For me, this is the point of the whole excersize. I have been lucky, and the Phoenix area has good coverage for me as far as T-Mo. This has been my experience.

[Q] Trying to find the right Modem (baseband) file?

Hello everyone,
So I'm not too good with the whole modem/baseband issue. What I'm trying to find out is which modem file works best with AT&T, and since AT&T sells a different version of the S2, I know I can't use the basebands for that model. Does anyone have a recommendation for a baseband that might work. I'm in Manhattan, KS, but I don't need anything tailored to my area in particular, just something that would work US-wide (I'm coming from the korean version of the S2, so my baseband is COMPLETELY different for some reason)..
Thanks a TON for the help, everyone!

You don't wanna get a branded ROM, you are looking for as stock as it gets ROM (super-hyper unbranded). Forget about AT&T, I really don't think basebands differ from one model to another.
I might be wrong- doesn't feel like it, but I might-.

Note Logic Board Replace?

Hello to all
Yesterday I go to shop near my home the fix androids and iPhones and the tech tell me maybe is good idea replace the board (IMEI us different from the back and can't get signal in simple mobile same as Tmo well my question is how I really know if the board is damage?
Thanks in advance for any help!

Well have you tried different modems as well as the correct APN settings for those carriers?
I do not know how this "repair shop" gets their hand on the logic board to begin with.
I had been looking for a logic board, but NO ONE has it. Not even the supplier of Samsung repair parts. It is not for sale.
So, it sounds like they may be trying to trick you and charge you a big bill to "fix" it, when the solution is most likely as simple as flashing a different modem.

Yes Sir but let me try it again so if the APN is incorrect this matter on signal and calls? i mean with my skyrocket i never put the APN phone automatically loads (Tmo apn not simple mobile) and works better than the simple mobile itself

[Q] Flash Rezound to Boost Mobile

I've never flashed a phone to a different CDMA provider so I thought I'd ask here first and see if anyone had knowledge of how to do this? Or point me in the right direction to somewhere to learn how to? I've unlocked the GSM radio for use on att already and I'm sure it's a similar procedure, but I followed a guide to do this and have little experience with it. The CDMA providers blacklist phones from being used on other CDMA providers networks. "Flashing" in this sense is stealing and ESN/IMEI from an existing phone and cloning it to your phone. Not only is it extremely risky for your hardware, it is extremely against the law and cannot be discussed on these forums.
Certain phones like the Rezound and the Dinc4G have additional feature of GSM radios added for compatibility with oversea networks, you aren't really flashing anything so much as the phone reconfigures itself for GSM or CDMA depending on what kind of SIM card it finds.

Umm. Not true at all actually. I had a P+ dealer switch over my phone with a bad esn (mother in law didnt pah her bill) and they didn't use a "friend" phone. It doesn't require stealing a phones imei or anything it requires a lot of work to port it to a different carrier, but doesn't require anything illegal. Not to mention what you're talking about is also based on the staye you are in. In the states it js legal as long as you aren't copying two have two phones on one service and is completely legal ( state dependant) if you own both phones. Check your facts.

as far as using it on gsm networks, yeah its possible you just need to either do some things (I could dig up a link if you want) on stock and have it kinda work, or find a rom that supports it and flash that (recommended, what i'm gonna be doing). and flashing phones to other networks i am pretty sure is illegal, i know from experience, i tried to work that out on xda and they sent me away saying this isnt a topic allowed of these forums, so if you still want to know about carrier flashing i suggest another forum
but anyways just making sure i am following you right, you want to gsm unlock but want to use it on virgin mobile (a CDMA network?)

It should be possible, I've gotten as far as getting the NV values on both radios, but it seems as the 9k wants to search for signal on 800mhz only, at least according to DFS.
The Thunderbolt is able to get 3g working on Boost/VM/etc. at least from what I've seen. Considering the similarity between it and the Rezound I was hoping it would be easier...

Flashing phones to different networks aren't illegal. It is a state dependant thing. I went and had my note 2 flashed over at a business in the middle of a bestbuy, guitar center, more big businesses. (Aka, big businesses near ~ not a shady place)
Yes, I know that Virgin Mobile is CDMA. I wanted to know how to unlock the GSM antenna purely for education purposes.

It is easy, but only to people that already know how to do it. The process is similar for most phones and doesn't require a lot, but most that try to do it dont know what they're doing and it takes them forever. What we need is a good electrical engineer.

Quick update:
The Rezound can work on Sprint-based towers, at least with leaked global (4.03) and stock global (4.05) radios. It took me couple of days of fidding via DFS, but right now I do have 3G working, albeit with the stock ROM complaining that mobile data isn't working. Trying out couple of ROMs to see which ones is usable.
Most important thing is that the 8K radio needs to be set to NV_ONLY but that 9K can be set to RUIM preferred. Also, flashing the firmware (from the recent 4.05 global update) will reset the 8K radio to RUIM, which is a good thing/bad thing. Good thing is that if you ever want to NV reset (since hard resets do not seem to wipe NV), flashing the latest firmware/radio should get you back to RUIM/stock PRL/blanked #. Bad thing is you need to fiddle with some of the settings in DFS again, but at least it's only for the 8K radio so far.
Another thing that probably made it work was to use the same PRL from the phone Sprint thinks you are using. For me this was the 61009 PRL. Profile info only needs to get stuck into the 9K radio and I don't think you really need to bother with the NAM2 stuff. But again, I've done too many fiddling to be able to say for certain.

Unfortunatley, I am not sure I would be of any help. The question you posed in your PM sounds like a bit of a stretch. That doesnt mean it cant be done, but I think it would be a long road to travel.
It does sound as if it is a modem issue, possibly APN.
I know there are several that claim the Blaze modem works like a charm. Sorry I dont have a copy as I dont need.
I would fret too much, as whenever I give advice, someone comes along and corrects me. I might expect someone such as 440bro to come along, who seems to have every file in existance along with solid advice. Or a slight chance maybe that Sashusmom would drop in, who is a modem goddess. She is a master at the modem.
Good luck my friend, stick with it.

Thanks for the reply. Turns out that wasn't an option anyways. Still cracking away at it however. Will post when I figure out a solution.

Just weighing in to try help rule out the obvious when the phone connects after a phone reflash does all telephoney functions work correctly? Calls texts and data?
Does the simcard carrier run on a compatible frequency for this model of phone in your area?
Since you have performed the unlock does any other simcards show the same issues?
I assume that while it is in its "unregistering" state you cannot receive calls?

The SIM carrier does work on a compatible frequency. I've had it fully connected before a few times.
My girlfriend's SIM did act the same way but I'll try it again.
The SIM won't register so no I can't interact with the network in any way.
Thanks anyways for the reply.
Finally found and reflashed the stock ROM and Radio... nothing. Will post a new error log from stock format soon.
SOLVED... unfortunately.
Make sure to check your IMEI folks.
....service mode folks. Take your time.
