Flashed the cyanogenmod alpha build onto my HTC One, and while streaming via google play, and messing with dsp manager, the phone went black. True hard brick. If, anyone has a story about bricking thier htc one, come and vent. Lets shed tears and get over this together.LOL jk

Well, After 2 years and a month or 3 I decided to upgrade from my trusty Hero and get an Evo 3D. With upgrade i managed to walk away with it for $100 so I cant complain to much. I do though have a few questions before I get to really playing with it.
First, I bought it from an online company (wirefly) and they said once I turn it on it will activate automatically and my Hero will no long work and no need to call Sprint or anything like that. Is there any way to prevent it from doing this right away so I can maybe mess around with it and get it all rooted and stuff before hand or should I just let it activate itself. I hate to be without a phone if something does go wrong.
And second, what is the best method for rooting (Permanent root) and s-off and all that good stuff? I am guessing this is the best method here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1218193
I am so excited and I have been trying to read all I can but its a lot to take in. Also really looking at ViperRom as it looks like a great solid fast rom.
Well, Today I will officially be here in the 3D forums for the most part. I will not totally give up on my Hero. It will make a great MP3 player and stuff for out in the boat and what not and some GPS stuff and use when on the WiFi at home.

Activation should be a completely separate issue from "updating". You can "activate" the phone number, but by no means whatsoever should you let it do a ("firmware update", ruu, OTA, whatever) at all.
<<This space for rent>>
I used this for rooting. Worked like a charm.
As for activation... You can mess with it and all of that but its really easy to change out your phones if you have to and still have your old Hero. All you do is a battery pull, find out your esn, then go to sprint.com and do it there.
Well, I got my phone and first thing first was to root it and then back it up then flash away! Never even used it stock but I have a back up should I need to go back ever.
So far I am really liking it. Sad to see the Hero get set aside though...
not to be a downer but its most likely going to have boot loader 1.50 on it. which will mean only way to unlock and root will be to void your warranty the htc way. maybe you will get lucky and get a 1.30 or a 1.40 but i doubt it if its new.
edit seen your new post. you got lucky lol congrats. dont update the boot loader!!
Its already been rooted and flashed with ViperRom. And it has HBoot 1.40.000
Guess I got lucky.
Hey guys, I'm going to be buying my first htc device when the amaze 4g comes out. I was just wondering if anyone knows if HTC has a flashing utility simular to Samsungs Odin. Odin has saved my butt on more than one occasion with my Samsung Vibrant and it is very nice to be able to return to stock firmware so easily. I loved the Samsung Vibrant after putting CM7 on it but I'm going with the HTC rather than the Samsung Galaxy S2 cause I want a device that feels like quality in my hand. Are HTC devices easy to root/unroot? Thanx in advance.
its called a RUU for Rom Utility Update. there is not one for the current shipped ROM but there is a zip file that you can put on your SD card and flash through hboot

Samsung phones are easier, by a lot. Nothing is really hard though once your finally figure it out. Create your gold cards(after finding an sdcard you don't care about), temp root a few times haha!
Would we still need recovery to flash the Rom though ?

I am looking at a good price on a Thunderbolt, but it is stuck at the HTC screen.
From poking around this forum it looks like there is a good chance I could fix it.
Any thoughts as to odds that this is a brick and not fixable?
there is a good chance that its fixable, yes. I have seen Thunderbolt's average $200 on craigslist(heck, have even seen Bionic's for $250)... so, the fact that there is something wrong with it I wouldn't offer more then $150.. actually, even that is a tad high.
Cool - getting it for $100.
Looks like even a brick sells for 70-100 on ebay so I think it is a risk worth taking.
Thanks for the help!
Just picked the phone up - it looks brand new. Even got the 32GB memory card!
The guy I bought it from worked in a Verizon store and said it was not rooted.
When I do the volume down during power up I can get into the boot loader.
Charging now and off to search the forums for next steps, but any suggestion would be much appreciated.
Sorry relatively new to HTCs
If you can get into the bootloader that's a good sign. Find a ROM that looks good, which includes a radio. Load that into the top level of your microSD card and make sure it is called UPDATE.ZIP.
Go ahead and boot into the bootloader and flash the new ROM and see if you get into the O/S this time.
Does it have the sim card still in there?
Robert
Yes still has SIM card
Looking for a ROM now
Will this work?
PG05IMG_Mecha_VERIZON_WWE_1.12.605.6_Radio_1. 16.0 0.0223r_NV_8k_1.41_9k_1.64_release_174685_signed.zip
Renamed to PG05IMG no update
Edit didn't work - says this one is older than current.
Looking for a newer rom...
if you haven't already looked at it, there's a virtual shopping list of ROMs over in the Development subforum.

Personally, I like Sense so I would suggest either one of the hybrids or the Sense 3.0 ROMs. Pay attention to installation info and radio requirements.
Unfortunately, I cannot tell from all that gobbledygook numbers and letters how old that is. I am sure someone else here will be able to.
Good luck!
Robert
You can't downgrade unless you are rooted, you can only flash upgrades only one you maybe be able to flash is 2.11.605.5 if your phone is not there already.

Thanks for the help guys!
EDIT - Oh wait - now to see about rooting!

Anyway, there's a dude that has a 920...all it shows is the lighting bolt with the gear icon...wont go past that...is it fixable with flashing the stock rom? or is it not worth the effort? guy wants practically nothing for the device,,,,, really need a phone as i just lost my main a day ago...(stolen) and need something quick....
thanks everyone for any info..

Hey everyone!
So I bought this HTC one m8 on ebay as "factory refurbished" only to find that it had been tampered and unlocked! So every time I open the "people" app (contacts) it crashes immediately. Also, the camera won't show the pictures I've taken to the gallery. It's like every photo I take doesn't get saved. If anyone could help me fix this I would greatly appreciate it.
I discovered Team Win Recovery Project v2.7.0.2 is on the phone. I don't know what that is, how it works, or what it's supposed to do. I'm completely lost and I just want my phone to operate correctly! Can anyone help?
Team win recovery project aka twrp is a custom recovery used by a lot of people on the M8. I would suggest researching how to go back to stock and unrooting the phone if you want a stock M8. If you want to play around with it, then I would suggest getting a custom ROM such as Viper One or SkyDragon.
BE VERY CAREFUL!
You can brick your phone if you don't completely understand what you are doing and if you don't follow directions exactly. And it will be no ones fault but your own.
That being said I've had a lot of fun experimenting and learning. Mostly I've learned by reading the threads and listening to these folks.
Heck if a redneck can do it anyone can.
