[Q] CM10 vs CM9 performance - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, i was wondering if anyone of you knows why cm10 has lower 3D performance then cm10 (measured by quadrant, and I had some laggy experience with certain games, but nenamark2 scores are the same). I noticed that some games works better on cm9. I'm not a phone gaming fan, I asked this question just for satisfying my curiosity I had several different devices with cm9/cm10 support, and that's why I noticed this ˝misbehavior˝ hope you can give me some answer.. Thanks in advance

Am not a gamer either but haven't seen any noticeable difference between the two but then again that could be because i play less resource hungry games . Don't know if vsync caps in cm10 are affecting games

In fakt, Benchmark give a lower Score for CM10 than 9. But(!) in practice CM10 is really much smoother and better than 9. Its actually my experience with that. But i think, it's on the huge spectrum of phones on every phone some other thing

from my experience, cm10 is better..
dont trust too much with benchmark tools, you know better about your phone

I believe its all up to the devs who build em...I guess...all I do know is I am running slimbean over cm10 and it smokes it...never gamed on my phone better...

What are the best apps for benchmarking at the moment?

Hey there, I've recently rooted my phone, and want to test various kernels, and possibly even ROMs, what can I use to test them?
Antutu Benchmark, Quadrant is out-dated
Sent from my LG-Stone from the Prehistory....
Naaaahh... Just kidding!
CM7.2 Temasek KANG P204-35
Vadonkas KANG kernel (13-01-2012) 32MB Ramhack Powersave
The only real test is real world use. Scores can be faked by rom edits but don't do anything for real performance at all.
agreed with zelendel. what matters is the stability and the actual smoothness of transitions/animations. i would prefer a rom that can get 1000 on quadrant that is super smooth than one with 3500 that doesn't feel snappy at all.
Antutu Benchmark is the most used now but as said above a benchmark is not something to reveal the real "feeling" of your phone.
Of course using a benchmark you'll see different scores among your different roms and versions... and sometimes it will let you feel better or... worse
Thanks guys.
Yes, I know that sometimes it will actually be different from the scores and feel better with a ROM that has scores that are a bit lower, but still I'd like to have some kind of measurement.

AOSP/AOKP graphics performance low?

I have switched from samsung LP7 rom to AOSP (F1 GNex) and then AOKP (hydrogen).
and I really love the overall UI smoothness on both, however I did notice that 3D graphics performance is not as good as in the samsung ics rom.
This is very noticeable (low frame rate lag) in games like Modern Combat 3 and ShadowGun..
Anybody knows the reason why?
Note: I did not underclock/undervolt the cpu or gpu
same issue here on all AOSP and AOKP roms i think there is real problem in GPU driver in Aosp OR screen refresh rate and until now not fixed i really hate the fps drops in games i feel like i have a **** device not sgs2
btw if u run antutu when it come in 3d graphic test(knight) in start of test the fps get stuck at 51 fps like 10-15 second then it goes up and in nena mark 2 when u look in the fps meter u can see the fps gose up an down like hell in all aosp roms and the test lag as hell the u will got 46 on sammy rom the test run so so smooth and the fps much better no fps drops and u will got between 52-54 fps
this issue is keeping me on sammy rom but i really like the Aosp and Aokp i really hope it will fix soon
Agreed.

idk there is many things to fix in Aosp roms and most impotent thing is the laggy 3d thing that issue keep away from cm or aokp roms but i really like them
u can ask codeworkx for fix but he will ignore u and i think he is busy with i9100G too as i read in cm thread
btw there is problem with ram too
in sammy rom i got more than 1070 points in aosp only 890 in quadrant i got more than 3200 in ram points in aosp 2000
so for now sammy rom is best in every thing performance-stability-for games - etc
in GB the Aosp roms was slightly better in every thing than sammy rom but idk what happened in ics it become the opposite or maybe sammy but some magic in there ics roms

maybe you can get driver sources from samsung so codeworkx can work on them
other wise you have to live with it
sadly samsung doesnt provide sources besides kernel
in fact no manufacturer does
which is the biggest drawback in aosp rom or phones like s2
but the advantages out weight the problems aosp ftw
what the hell the thread moved to Q&A thanks for mod now no one will see it
So it's a driver problem I assume ?
AOKP & CM9 roms are slow compare to AOSP & Sam roms. I usualy get 59.8 fps on antutu benchmark at knights where as on AOKP & CM9 roms it doesn't go beyond 54-56 fps. IMO try 4.0.3 roms instead of 4.0.4 ! You will feel the difference.
And one more thing try Siyah 3.0.0rc1 - 3.0.1. (Device gets quite hot but it gives you nice fps on HD games like MC3,Shadowgun, Asphalt 6).
I know AOKP & CM9 have lots of nice tweaks but they are not yet optimized & have some touch problems likr when you swipe left it goes right etc )

[Q] If Jelly bean comes to GS 3 will it improve gaming performance???

Im very new to android and was very surprised that the GS 3 was giving me lower than expected framerates when playing NOVA 3. I wrongly expected that the phone would be able to run all games at 60fps. bad NOVA 3 seems to run at between 40fps - 60fps...... very rarely staying at a constant 60fps. or is it just my phone?? i have noticed the same with riptide too. most of the time it is very smooth but when all of the jets are on the screen at the same time the framerate drops... so im really hoping that jelly bean will help to fix this or not???
Why dont you get an iphone if you are not satisfied with the best PHONE
JellyBean is not a MIRACLE that it will make fastest phone more faasstest!

Sorry deleted
To answer your question in simple terms, No Jelly Bean will not increase the performance of gaming on the S3.
Project Butter enables VSYNC for window transitions and animations in the operating system, meaning that the FPS is increased to a constant 60FPS. Obviously other things are done so that the devices can handle this change, but this is what happens at basic level. For this to be incorporated into games, you will have to get the developer to make the same changes and make it work effectively with your phone's hardware.
But no, project butter only affects the Android OS animations, and not gaming.
Someone is welcome to correct me if I am wrong and I will change this post accordingly.
If i wanted to get an iphone i would have got one instead of the S3. i know that jelly bean improves the fps of the ui to 60fps, but what i wanted to know if anyone knows is will jeyy bean also improve the framerate of games?
Consequently No.

thanks DarkRyoushii. all i needed to know!
This is completely incorrect, sorta? If you install Nova Launcher, it's essentially a game. I know you don't play it, but it's an application that does exactly the same as a game, uses your phones CPU and RAM. Project Butter works by ramping up the CPU each and every time the screen is touched in all aspects of the OS, be gaming or custom launcher. This may not increase the speed of a game or improve it, because it's mainly more responsive to touch so I'm not too sure about that bit.

Will this jellybean allow us to move apps/games to external sd?

I experience the same choppiness on riptide. It really kills the experience.

Even more annoying thing is: the US GS3 doesn't seem to suffer the same problem even with it's crappy Adreno 225.

JB is a new version of an operating system, it changes nothing in the layout of the filesystem.
You can, with some manual work and root, already move the apps to the external sd.
I'm sure someont will make an app for that but for now it's as good as it can get

Higher frame-rates and more aggressive cpu scaling won't increase battery life.
I differ from all who said it doesnt improve on games. Games that used to be laggy on my nexus with ics now play smoothly on jellybean
Ugghhh, So many misinformed people. The reason games don't play smoothly is because they're not optimized to fit with the modified mali400 gpu. Give it time, games will be optimized. Hell nova3 runs like butter on my s2 and the gpu is similar. It is possible for an os to increase gpu performance, ics saw a 20% improvement over gb. But i doubt they changed Amy code dealing with that for jb.

No, it will not.
The reason games are smoother and faster on the iPhone compared to the S3 is the same reason why PS3 games are smoother than the latest and fastest pcs. It's because games are optimised specifically for the iPhone, while android games are all lousy ports.
To have a game run super well on the s3, we'll need to hope for a Mali-optimised game, which won't happen any time soon, considering the influence of ios and tegra.
Yes it will improve the framerate somehow. In theory it shouldn't but it does.
For example, before Samsung Galaxy S2 got the ICS update, on Nenamark 2 it only achieved around 47fps, now with 53fps with ICS update.
Another example would be the Nexus 7, while it has a Tegra 3 built in, it's GPU is a lower clock at 427Mhz (Something like that) and achieves 55fps on Nenamark 2 compared to Asus Transformer Prime with a higher clock GPU (533Mhz) and only achieving around 48fps. (Both have same resolution, but different Android OS, Jelly Bean vs Ice Cream Sandwich).
I'll be getting the Galaxy S3 (Again) but the blue version (Grey-ish really), but I remember that Nova 3 and Riptide (With Tegra effects) played smoothly on Siyahkernel v1.2.x, I don't know now, but give it a try.
It won't necessarily require JB to make games run faster. It'll require Samsung to provide updated drivers for the Mali GPU. Whether that comes with an ICS or a JB update is irrelevant.

GAMING PERFORMANCE on CUSTOM ROMS @GAME FREAKS

Hey guys
This question is mainly aimed at gaming freaks who have also switched to custom roms.
Just wanna know how is the gaming performance (generally 3d games) on various roms like Resurrection remix, ics slim ,cm9, miui etc..
I saw in various threads that many 3d games lag more on such roms (at stock cpu/gpu settings)? Is it true? Coz if it is, then this is totally a deal buster for me..i was excited to flash RR but if games are lagging...there wont be any use of improved system performance lol on a custom rom
anyway guys do let me know the gaming problems with any of the popular roms..so i can make up my mind and finally flash a custom rom..
thanks

i am on latest version of ressurection remix and i fell no such problem.i use no tweaking like overclocking etc...{i hate all these things}}
Cm9/aokp I get the best graphics performance. I actually under clock my CPU for a longer battery life... and its just still as good if not better than stock.

Games like Dead trigger, NOVA 3, shadowgun, Modern Combat 3 - lots of framerate issues on ICS custom rom. I never had issues on GB and never stayed on samsung ICS long enough to find out what that was like. Mundane tasks showed that it sucked balls, so I seriously doubt that it would be any different with intensive tasks like gaming.
I'd venture a guess that CM9 kernel is probably better than the majority of ICS kernels. My experience is that it just works alot better in general - other kernels have a lot of bells and wistles but other than some cool novelty feature, really aren't very different from each other. CM9's kernel really stands out for me. I have however heard good things about Fluxi kernel. I made the switch but it was much worse unfortunately others may have a different experience though.
The lag spikes seem to be random aswell, so I have my doubts any overclocking would help. If it happened in sequences with big open fields and lots of enemies on screen I'd understand, but when you are in a small corrider with no-one around, I can't think of why it should do it then. Not to mention it was seemless on stock GB (actually Villian ROM 3.0 and Redpill kernel).
But I've got CM9 running exactly how I want it and its stock CM9 kernel is actually pretty good, the games are good to play on it, but you do get annoying lag spikes somewhat frequently.

[Q] benchmark performance?

i am a bit of a benchmark nerd, and i was wondering what would be the best combination of rom/kernel overclock settings etc... to get the best benchmark scores i can get on our device?
Flash them. Use them. Judge for yourself. Benchmarks are useless and are only really for people who wanna compare how big their balls are. I've run some ROMS that scored low bench marks but ran really smooth.
Like Phalanx said, benchmarks are utterly useless. I've ran hd games at a smoother frame rate on lower-score benchmarked roms than on ridiculously high-scored roms.
I could make you a rom that scored over 9000 in benchmark but runs slow and crappy. As stated above benchmarks mean next to nothing.
