anybody else notice an increase in their data usage when on a jb rom?
i have a 2gb data plan and when i'm on an ics rom (currently padawan 5 or 9),
i don't come near to using the 2gb monthly limit.
when i switch to any jb rom, i get a message from at&t warning me i'm at 65%
usage after the first two weeks of the month.
yes, i've checked the synch setting and i don't do anything differently between either rom.
weird.

Under settings the third item is "data". It tells you what's using data and how much it's using. If you're on a strict data diet I HIGHLY recommend checking it often. You can even set limits and usage warnings. I have unlimited and thank God because I use at least 1 gig a week. I'm constantly streaming music. I noticed that "Google now" and "maps" is sucking up more data than it use too.

Time for Droid Wall.
Greenify worked a lot in my case.

Well I have been using My data manager it has been very accurate, but this one produce so many wakelocks that drain a bit faster the battery.. So which other you will recommend. ??
That is almost as accurate, and the most important thing is that keep record for various sims.. I switch sims (3) very often.. My data manager, always detect which sim is used, and never loose the previous use.
Have you tried Onavo?
I literally JUST installed Onavo before seeing this thread. Gonna try it out to make sure I don't go over my 3 GB LIMIT ON MY UNLIMITED DATA PLAN
I wouldn't use the 3G watchdog or whatever. That was way off for me. I had used about twice what it said. :/ I even tried the option it had for a different way of counting and it got worse. I don't use anything now, I just periodically check that usd code thing.
SHOStock + ICS theme + ICS themed gb keyboard = the flashaholic cure!
I've run 3G watchdog for a while - doesn't seem to be a significant battery hit, but as previously posted, not as accurate as the other options.
More recently ran MDM for a while - very accurate, but mild additional battery drain, though it didn't seem to show up heavily in BBS.
Running Onavo for a second time now, seems to also be a mild battery drain, thinking I'm probably not gonna keep it.
For non-continuous but quite accurate data, I also have my ATT account set up in PageOnce. It does roughly 24 hour updates (I think, haven't paid too much attention). It can also be manually updated. Has a very nice interface to see a bunch of info regarding my account (so I can keep an eye on how many texts my mother-in-law uses on her pay-per-use text plan ) With this, I can get a pretty close rough idea where I am data use wise at a glance, and update manually if I need to know exactly. Will also throw alerts when getting close to maxing out airtime minutes and data usage. I haven't seen any negative battery impact from this app, and is my fallback when I get sick of the other options...

The problem I have with Onavo is that if you install it on say the 15th, there is no way to tell it how much data you have ALREADY used that month.
Same thing if you flash a new ROM. It starts from zero (as far as I can tell) when you install it. No way to tell it "I have already used xxxMB" etc.

yeah, you can. In Onavo, menu>settings>set data plan>set previously used data.
Thanks.. I installed Onavo and this one doesn´t detect which sim is used !! If in sim 1, have used 300mb and then install sim 2, the data used in sim 2 is added to the overall usage !!
Tha same happen with data counter widget. 3G watchdog as everyone say is not accurate enough..
Guess will not be able to leave My data manager.
Are all 3 Sims at&t? If so why not use the AT&T Communication Manager Widget?
It will show data used & remaining for whatever sim card is inserted.

Noup 1 is from at&t and the others are from different carriers..
I got my Note three days ago and I'm at 600Mb data usage.
Of course I've been setting it up but decided to look at the usage.
All the big Mb listings are "Sent"
They all look like this
03/27 08:28 PM pta Internet/MEdia Net Sent 128291KB
That particular one was right when I got the phone.
Last night there was one at 11:33pm for 24mB
I was asleep.....but had the phone charging so Data was turned on....
Anything 'received' is small. So I don't understand why apps arent showing up....
I checked mail, etc and there is nothing that warrants a 24Mb upload that I can tell.
Any ideas? How could I find out within my phone?
Thanks
One of your gapps could have updated or the yellow pages app. Tgats what happened to me i had mine for 3 days as well

That's pretty scary - especially w/ the throttling cap looming! If you find out what is going on, please share.
The data usage report doesn't happen to be in a different time-zone, does it? (11:33p actually being your 9:33p or something)
Ok just uninstalled yellow pages.
Even if the time is off I haven't sent anything that big.
Actually nothing but texts, text emails and maybe one pic.
That 126mb is ridiculous. I can understand some syncing at first startup but that much????
I would also expect a lot more as 'receive' because i had to download all my apps.
I know last night I downloaded one of the s pen apps that was 30mb and that doesn't show up.
Does 'sent' really mean 'receive' as most of us would perceive?
But that was many hours before that date stamp. BTW the texts I got match up with the times posted so it's not off.
The only thing 'good' about this is they put me on this month's cycle. So I have 3gb til sunday
Hence the reason I downloaded that 30mb app through LTE (which by the way showed no status, it was just bam! ----installing! LOVE IT)
The reason I got to looking was I was curious about how much data speedtest.net uses each time. Attached is the one from this morning (Beautiful!)
But it never showed up on my data usage.....
8o lucky haha

I went ahead and called....
It seems they aren't really sure about these things.
It took awhile and they still seem a bit foggy on how this works.
PTA is supposedly a generic input for LTE data usage.
I had to google that to find out, not the tech support person.
I asked why it says 'sent' and why it did it when I was asleep.
After talking to the manager, the best answer they gave me was that each 'session' will compile the data then once it's over send it up.
So 'sent' means what I downloaded...go figure.
I still thought it was excessive despite downloading apps etc.
I can't get back on my VZW account (they waste no time kicking you off) but I had checked and I was only using 2Gb/month consistently.
I downloaded a data tracker app and then downloaded a 30mb app from the market. It recorded that just fine.
I use Dolphin Browser HD and went to www.androidcentral.com which has all sorts of graphics. I have the user set to 'desktop' so it's the full version webpage, just like i had it on my tbolt. That page was 3Mb!! So I opened the stock browser and did the same thing....3Mb....
If browsing the internet chews this much I'm screwed. I think my phone might be measuring data strangely or I would have seen massive usage on VZW. I went back to check because I wanted to know if it was 20Gb instead of 2Gb but that's highly unlikely.
My next step is to have a friend who has the tbolt on VZW and LTE to do the same thing and see if it records 3Mb.
I don't want to be a slave to watching my data consumption......
If anyone that uses LTE could check their data usage it would be good to see if you get PTA as a line item with some high hits....
Similar situation. I got the Note just over a month ago. While on my Evo3D and Evo 4G, I never went over 2GB, even though I watched tons of youtube in HQ, tethered, and surfed a lot of internet. My first month with AT&T, I almost hit the 3GB cap within the first 2 weeks with pretty much the same useage(actually probably less useage). Not sure if I have a rogue app somewhere.
I had a friend on Tmobile 4G (sensation) do the same thing and his 1.5Mb to my 3Mb. I also had VZW LTE (tbolt) do the same and his was about 3Mb.
Now that's not a very good test actually. I guess I need to find a web page with an exact Mb size.
After downloading the data usage app I can see the main hogs. I watched a youtube video through Dolphin and it jumped 40Mb....
Just browsing through the market will gobble some up and of course downloading apps. The apps seem 1 for 1 meaning its the same size. I don't know if there is something else when streaming data or browsing data.
Anroid OS + others is also a main chunk
I was happy to see my email and texting apps don't use diddly squat....
I took a screenshot of the data use. this is just this afternoon and while I was working. The 'Web' is the default browser loading one page....
Basically, I should use wifi for downloading apps and watching videos....sucks.
I never worried about it on my Tbolt and was grandfathered unlimited but for whatever reason it didn't chew that kind of data up.
The whole reason I started looking was to see how much data the speedtest uses. Now I know. Each test is 19mb.so I guess I wont do those any more.....basically the 3gb plan means 100mb a day....
Do you guys send /receive mms at all? I think that counts but not sure
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using XDA App
Well tracking usage from 1pm on I used 100Mb with my internet browser.
It just seems excessive.....I'm really wondering if there is an LTE calculation in there....
Just to come to XDA straight to the NOTE main forum, then this subforum and then to this thread is 1.5Mb
I like to constantly poke in to my favorite websites throughout the day. Now this is going to make me hesitant and that ruins the experience.
I'll defintely only download files and apps via wifi or computer.
Opera mini compresses the data on their side before it gets to the phone, reducing data consumption on your plan.
I think it's Opera mini...you have to read the descriptions of their two browsers to make sure.
Hey,
So I'm actually so excited, because i am about the get the s3..
But theres one more thing i want to find about before jumping in. Im going to get it on a contract and i need some tips on the bundle i should be looking for. How much data usage is going to be enough for me? Im going to use wifi like 90% of the time, but im just curious of how much data would the s3 use. Like browsing facebook, twitter, xda-forums, youtube maybe? perhaps gps now and then? How much data do these use? I dont want to do anything major over 3G just the most common surfs really.
Would 200 or 500Mb be enough?
i wouldn't go less than 500mb. You wouldn't want to be constantly looking at your data usage worrying that you go over.
Hi,
Route66 navigation software uses around 50mb of data for a 7 hours trip.
On holidays, I have used maybe 2.5Gb of data on 2 weeks. But I was tethering and streamed a lot from my home.
On normal use (email, browsing, a little play, updating greader), I think it's around 15-20mb a day.
If u got wifi at home and seldom go out then 500mb is enough for u.
If not 2Gb is enuf.

I got 'All You Can Eat' data plan with 3 UK, reading the small print, their fair use policy is about 100GB a month :good:
From the 3 UK website - 'Even if you used your phone for every minute of every day you could only possibly use, subject to traffic management requirements and policy, up to 1000GB each month. So in a sense, there is a data limit of up to 1000GB, which is based on what you can physically use.'
Just for the doubters out there.
I have a Motorola Razr i with android 4.1.2 and today I got an email telling me that I only had 1.3 GB left of my monthly data plan!! I thought WHAT (I have a monthly 5.5 GB data plan)
So I investigated, this Monday Android OS used 2.8 GB!! (Background)
I have had everything turned on since I got the phone, and all the other months I have had this phone there have been an average data usage of around 130MB per month coming from Android OS!! but on this one day it used 2.8 GB ??
The 130MB per month is evenly divide between my Wi-Fi and my data plan but unfortunately I was not in range of a Wi-Fi network when my phone decided to go crazy
So what happened this Monday the 2 September 2013?? That made my Android OS use 2.8GB of data ??
Hope you can help me
Thanks
Regards Jakob
check if you have update pending , OTA. OR else check Google Play, may be it has eaten up the data to update apps.

As far as I can see there had been no major upgrads and what could posible warrent one 2.8GB download??
All the Android devices that I've seen (including googled screen shots of the Nexus) have data usage measured by default for past week, even though the data cycle for just about every one is by the month. Skip the rest of this paragraph if you already know what I'm talking about. If not, Settings > Data usage > Data usage cycle. Default usage cycle shows one month. But the graph below and the text info below the graph always defaults to the past one week, no matter how late in the monthly cycle it may be.
I'm getting tired of dragging the left hand bar of the data graph to the left so I can see my true usage.
My device is a rooted Galaxy S4 Triband (SPH-L720T) running stock Jelly Bean 4.3, more specifically version L720TVPUAMK5.
Is there any way to fix it so that the graph defaults to showing all data used since the beginning of the monthly cycle?
Strange, don't pay that much attention to mine as I have unlimited but it looks like its working on my OPO, I can check some of my nexus devices as well
Been on WiFi mostly so its real low this month
Oh, and did you try to pull the white bars on the graph? This moves the time line

Thanks for the quick reply.
OPO?
Yes, as mentioned: “I'm getting tired of dragging the left hand bar of the data graph to the left so I can see my true usage.”
What I want to do is make the measured monthly usage the default, instead of the current default of weekly usage.
OPO = oneplus one, cool phone
http://oneplus.net
As far as I know you just set the bars once and they stay that way for the term you set, but like I said I hardly use it so not too sure if that's true
If not hopefully someone else can chime in with an answer

No, definitely not. As soon as you leave the data usage screen, and then return it is back to the one week default. It was the same with my S2.
