i'm getting S4 in few hours and thinking about rooting it right away. But being a noob i dont really know what are the benefits of the process and need some + and - of rooting.
I don't think it's worth doing until the bootloader is unlocked. No way to flash anything.
You can still remove the VZW bloat Titanium backup. And it's very simple to do with this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2290798

I've been trying to keep up but I know I've missed a few days. Has anyone found out how to root after the OTA update yet? I'd really like to get some Custom ROM's but not sure if it's possible yet.
Wondering the same thing.. trying a few methods now.
Unfortunately, after receiving the OTA you cannot run the One-Click root method, however, if you unlock and install Amon_Ra style recovery (find it in the Dev thread) you can reboot to recovery and go to "Developer options" and install Superuser from there to get root.

+1 this method works 100% of the time every time.
For us novices, is there any way you could do a step by step on what to do to accomplish this? I'd greatly appreciate it!

Unlock
Install Amon Ra
Install root via Amon Ra
OR
Install ClockWorkMod/Amon Ra
Install a rooted ROM
First time I've ever seen someone get the thanks when I answered your question haha.
Mr. Smith knows his stuff so you're good if you follow what he posted.
I had to re-install SuperUser from the market for some reason, but the AmonRa push for root/su worked like a charm.. I've been using CWM for so long with a Samsung device.. I really, really like AmonRa.. very slick.

After rooting with Amon-Ra, downloading superuser/busybox from the market is necessary.
I've never had to download busybox. Wierd.

I did mine last night... After I rooted and starting adding more packages (like titanium backup), a new SuperUser Update showed up in the market which I applied. No issues with that.
Getting to root was involved more so with the HTC Bootloader Unlock as I had issues with clicking on the Button on their page to start the process (nothing happened).. Ended up moving over to Chrome to do it.
After that, it was easy though there are a few battery pulls along the way.
is there a chance of somebody releasing a "one click" root for people with OTA updates?

It's super easy to root.
If you already have Amon Ra just navigate to the devoloper menu in that, then select install su. Done.
If you don't have Amon Ra, flash it, then navigate to the devoloper menu in that, then select install su. Done.

Okay, but I was addressing the question you asked, not the one you meant to ask.
Now if you don't want the factory reset from unlocking without being backed up, that's another story. And as mentioned above, you can't root until you are unlocked. That's the point of unlocking, to be able to root. Even with OneClick you ahd to be unlocked.
MyBackup does not require root but will not back up all the data. It's a good program though, I have the pro version and use it. And I think it will back up your contacts and sms/mms without root, you'll have to check on that.
If you just want to back up apps without data AppMonster Pro is great. Restoring is nice and easy on the eyes and you can install from your sd backup or redownload from Market. One thing I love about it is that it backs up apps as soon as you download them.
I think those are your options for backing up without root. I would grab both of them. I use both regularly.

Really? I used CleanTool to temp root to disable sense before OTA update, so I thought unlocking is not necessary before rooting. Oh well I guess I am out of luck for backing up my data.
I just used Amon RA.

Yeah, the temp root was the solution for before HTC unlocked the bootloader. You mentioned OneClick before, that's for perm root and no longer works after the OTA.
And yeah, iirc, there's no more temp root since the OTA. That would've allow you to back up, then unlock and root and restore. I think that's what you were getting at...
ok, so im not a total newb when it comes to rooting but here is my question(s).
recently got the jellybean update on my t-mobile l9 and was wondering the simplest way to root it?
do i have to unlock the boot loader to root it??
all i really want to do is be able to remove some of the t-mobile bloatware.
please and thank you to all who help.
also ive briefly glanced at Lelus root/offline flashing method, is all that work needed to simply root the device??
if so, could someone link me to the EXACT files i would need, not the "look in this thread for your version"
(if i break the wifes phone, or lose here saved games, she will kick my butt lol)
my device is the following
tmobile
lg l9
p76920d
android version 4.1.2
I second this motion! And no one mentioned is the lelus root method will work with V20D
Sent from my LG-P769 using xda app-developers app
Lol, yes all of that is needed to root the device and as of right now, you have to have root before upgrading to jelly bean. So if you really wanted to root her device. you would have to flash 10g (ice cream) for her device (p769).
If all you want is to disable some bloatware trying going to apps in system setting and see if you can disable it.

You would need to downgrade to V10G using the Lelus method (which isnt hard at all just follow the directions carefully) and then root the phone. After that you could update to a rooted version of V20D ad then you would be set.Everything you need is in the Development forum.
i agree with grey use the V10G Method then use the CWM BackUp with radio flash through CWM Recovery by artas182x always remember to make a backup of data from your backup app and as well backup your sd card to the computer and please give thanks to the devs they have helped us alot in this development section and they deserve the credit if i have helped you can always give me thanks but the real credit goes to the devs and people that help our glorious community

Just install voodoo OTA rootkeeper and open and press protect root. After that you can safely take OTA. Also if OTA fails you're not bricked, pull battery and it will boot back into ICS. The reason we can't directly root 20D is because we don't yet have the KDZ file from LG.

I protected root in voodoo, sys update restarted the phone, red triangle/some kind of error and then phone restarted by itself back to normal.
I wish they come on the bloat is so massive

Then you have 2 options to go from here (or 3? I guess). Either use the offline flasher to flash 10g again(use the lelus root method so you don't lose root.) this should make everything default and OTA should go thru. Afterwards don't forget to do voodoo again. Or install CWM and update with one of the clean rooted backups available. @artas182x CWM for locked bootloader works great. I know you said you don't wanna mess around with CWM but there is very little risk involved, just be sure to backup your current rom first. If you backup all your apps and app data in titanium beforehand you can restore them back to the clean JB after all is said and done. I'd personally go the CWM route as it is much faster.

i'm on 10g rooted with voodoo now. Flash 10g again?
CWM i didn't install because wasn't sure if 100% working or still buggy for p769. CWM is a better option. Backup is not critical. I had trouble restoring with titanium before so i don't mind reinstalling apps. Updating to JB is not critical either unless it brings some improvement in speed/ram management. Update notification was incessantly bugging me every 5 minutes that's why i wanted to get rid of it but its no longer a problem. Disappeared. Will i be able to CWM a rooted/unlocked bl JB for p769 eventually or should i do the rooted JB now and wait until bl can be unlocked in the future? Or, possibly new rooted unlocked bl roms in the future?

The FreeGee app will unlock your bootloader along with disable security check. Then you can delete any app you want to.

You can just root the stock ROM and from there install something like titanium backup (free) to remove the AT&T bloatware.
Unlocking the bootloader afterwards using FreeGee is optional. But I've come across a thread saying that if you root but don't unlock the bootloader and try to do a factory reset, it'll become softbricked until you use Teenybin to restore, so caution there before doing factory reset. Otherwise, root works just fine.
I rooted + unlocked my device yesterday after receiving it in the mail. I was on 4.1.2 JellyBean and FreeGee gave me a ton of warnings but I took a gamble and it paid off. Got bootloader and security check disabled and Sk8's CWM installed.
EDIT: Go to step #4 of the link to see which apps can be safely removed.
I froze all the bloatware (at&t and LG Bloatware.) I rooted and use FreeGee to unlock the bootloader. No security error. I did get a security error the first time though because i didn't use the bootloader and didn't know this could happen (the first day i got the phone.) It's really easy to unbrick it though. Just put it in download mode and use LGNPST.

It doesn't take a factory reset to get security error, a reboot or powering phone off then on will cause it.

On the last page users are confirming they've used it on NC5 (the latest firmware).
This just shows how to root so it doesn't wipe anything.
You can download MyBackup from play store and backup all your stuff as well, just an a just incase. Never hurts to create a backup.

Get Titanium Backup and freeze or uninstall the unwanted apps.
Of course you need to be rooted first.
Ok well my next prob is I don't think my phone can be rooted I've done the kit kat 4.4.2 and from what I've read it can't be rooted if it can be rooted can some one give me some detail on how to do it
You will need to downgrade to mk2, root, install safestrap,
then you can go back to a rooted nc5 stock rom.
or just stay at mk2 rooted whichever is your preference.
Everything you need will be in this thread.
